  • When I looked online for help replacing the worn out bearings in my Technics RS1500us I found very little information. Much of the info was advising not to open the motor. Not being able to let it go I decided to learn how to rebuild the motor myself. Now I've repaired two and want to share how to do it. So when others search for help with fixing their old Technics decks hopefully they will find this video.

    Hello Doug, great video. You may have given me the courage to attack my RS 1700. Hopefully they have the same motor. Keep up the great work.

    This is how you make a video of this sort.

    Great video! You could make a Patreon, I'm sure anyone needing this help would be happy to contribute. I have a Teac A-1500W and was just looking for a video to lubricate the capstan motor bearings (before it got to the point of needing replacement) and found your video. Even though I don't need to do this I found it very interesting and watched the whole thing anyways! Thanks!!

    Hi Doug, this is an excellent and very educational video on the Technics RS capstan motor!
    I recently bought the RS-1700 and most of it's bearings are making noise or are grinding. So your tutorial video on replacing the bearings of the capstan motor is very appreciated.
    So far my only bearing experience was replacing the brass bushing of Pioneer RT-909 pinch rollers by 2 Fushi bearings with great result. Fushi bearings are indeed very quiet!
    Thanks!

    Great video! Nice job of issuing warnings and tips. A few thoughts:
    On the motor, the magnet would be the dark inner ring attached to the flywheel, not the outer ring. The copper coils are energized in series (creating a momentary electromagnet) to propel the ring around the windings. The outer dark ring generates a feedback pulse signal to monitor the rate of spin on the flywheel. The motor sends more or less current to the windings to keep the spin rate constant based on the feedback circuit, if I understand the schematic correctly (I'm a weekend warrior, not a pro).
    Bearings usually want to be evenly pressed into their guide. If you get some spare washers about the same size as the existing outer washer from a hardware store with a long bolt and nut, you create a mini-press to seat them by tightening the nut. I do my bicycle bearings in this way. If you do sand, make sure you get all the dust out. Metal shavings, even if they're fine grit, can work their way into the new bearing causing premature wear.
    Thanks for the video! I learned a lot (love the business card trick), and that pulse created by the outer ring makes total sense now (I uploaded a video on the capstan motor control adjustment on an oscilloscope) but I hope I never have to do this particular job!

      Michael De Lazzer Thanks man! I love understanding this deck more and more. The capstan motor speed system is super interesting and I need to spend more time with the schematic and scope. Thanks so much for the thoughtful comment!

      @@Edgarbopp What i do need to do is polish the capstan because i think it has some rust pitting? I have already cleaned it with isopropyl and acetone using q-tips but i still have some rough spots, i am thinking of using my dremel with polishing pads/tips and some sort of metal polish to remove/smooth those rough spots.

    Great Day in the Morning, that is one well endowed capstan motor ! I have never seen a reel to reel tape machine with anything close to that size. Technics must of had a bunch of size-queen engineers designing this deck. Wish all the companies hired like this. i have two pioneer 909 reel to reels with the crapest capstan motors in them that are not repairable because of the type brushes used. Love this setup !

    Absolutely excellent content. I have recently acquired a TEAC A3340-S which will require quite a lot of work ( I believe ). The capstan has forward-backward play, tension arms are stiff and the electronics will also need to be checked. And, of course, the deck is in need of overall cleaning, lubrication and adjustment.
    I have also previously come across problems which the internet was not competent enough to help with (there is quite a lot of people on forums spending more time yapping about their opinions and collections of equipment rather than providing constructive comments). Your video made me more confident in attempting to do more advanced work myself. Thank you for sharing.

      @@Edgarbopp I am having a problem with the tension arms bouncing up and down while my 1500 is in play, so i checked the back of the capstan motor while the machine was in play mode and noticed that the motor was not turning concentric it seems like its out of round. I stopped the machine and grabbed the center area of the back of the capstan motor and was able to move it up and down but there is no play side to side. I am thinking of removing the capstan motor to inspect it better what i would like to know is, are there any linkaged bolted to the front face of the capstan motor?
      I also tried to move the front area of the capstan motor and got no movement.

    I have this same unit, my capstan motor has decided to stop turning. I have taken the unit totally apart to attempt a repair. It was just sitting there, with slight vibrations but not rotating. So far I can't find any problems with the circuit board that the motor connects to, but I don't know exactly how to test the motor once its out of the machine. The reel motors work perfectly, its just the capstan motor that decided to quit. Any suggestions on how to test the motor before dropping the dough for a replacement?

    • @Edgarbopp
      @Edgarbopp  2 года назад

      I’d say it’s probably not the motor. The bearings are really the only part that should ever wear out. Probably it’s the motor control board.

    at 30.00 i assume you are referring to the strobe?

    • @Edgarbopp
      @Edgarbopp  2 года назад +1

      When the trace pcb is too far from the teeth on the flywheel the unit will struggle to keep the speed correct. This is visible using the strobe. It’s also audible and you can see the tape speed change because the tension arms will move around.
