I work on the show and have done for 17 years and was about 10 foot away, this is still one of the best performances I’ve ever seen on it! It fucking rocks!
Saw him live in The Ruby Lounge in Manchester..... Absolutely incredible! Kiwi wife dragged me there during a very difficult period of my life and the gig was incredible. Just no other words
I still think this is one of the greatest live performances. I remember watching this in 2008 and being like WHOAH. 11 years on and I still haven't closed my gob.
I've just found this - in 2020 ! So amazing. Massive Neil and Tim Finn fan over the years. But this blew me away - great lyrics, great guitar, and the drumming - well what can I say ! Just amazingggg !!! The passion in Liam comes through - I love it ! x
One of New Zealand's most authentic musicians. Keep up the good work Liam! Really enjoy the thought and care put into his music. I also want to say that I am tired of the hypocritical mainstream attitude of Zealand musicians mimicking American musicians but hating Americans despite ripping-off their music and lyrics. I give credit to people like Liam who do not do this type of shit! And who can dive deep into his own roots producing something that has its own quality. Thank you!
I went to every Liam show in Boston for years and hung out with Elroy and EJ for a spell (a story that is private! nerds) but every show was impeccible. This performance is incredible! Liam is such a phenomenal songwriter. He also makes the best performances. I love this video!
Saw them do this live in other voices St James Church Dingle absolutely savage !!! Back in 98 I was invited to my cousins house for lunch and I was 16 and too cool for my relations ... little did I know Neil and Liam were staying with them still a huge regret of my life !!!!!!
Amazing performance!! This dude is awesome. I wasn't expecting his bearded folksinger-kind of look, though! So different from his dad's innocent boy-next-door thing in the '80s.
@yuppy64 Agreed - I first heard the studio version of this song and was reminded a bit too much of Jake from the Scissor Sisters (he's got to stop that falsetto). But Liam's falsetto is much lower, and not annoying, and at least imbued with some emotion.
Loovvee this! Only took me 2 years to find it :) I looked everywhere for it after it was aired but couldn't find it. Ahh well :) Does anyone know the band at 3:39 the lead looks familiar but I can't place him. Thanks :) xo
@InvisibleGuitarisst Iffin you like the use of loop pedals. . . you should check out a cat called Dub FX. . . He is actually a beat boxer who layers everything live on the spot with loop pedals. . . Pretty sick stuff. . . watch?v=Gc67C94wSx0
@anglinthemtns At first I didn't like Liam because from the limited exposure I had to him at the time he seemed to be all falsetto and I didn't like that, then I saw this and grew up a little bit at the same time and am so proud of him.
I work on the show and have done for 17 years and was about 10 foot away, this is still one of the best performances I’ve ever seen on it! It fucking rocks!
I keep coming back here to see this. I can only image how it was on the night. Was it one take?
Saw him live in The Ruby Lounge in Manchester..... Absolutely incredible! Kiwi wife dragged me there during a very difficult period of my life and the gig was incredible. Just no other words
@@paulm4652I hope things are going better for you today.
Saw this when it was aired and yeah keep coming back to it as one of my go to's.@@liamcarey335

Shot my Bro
It's really f*cking good. I feel exactly the same.
The amazingly talented woman on the stage whom everybody forgot to mention is Eliza Jane Barnes
Also from a musical family :)
That's Jimmy Barne's daughter
It still makes me smile this performance and I saw it when it was first broadcast. The passion in this guy is remarkable.
H
Shot my Bro
I played this for my friend and I said,"what for it...what for it"
I could watch this all day.
One of the most amazing performances on the show ever!
quite possibly the best live performance i have ever seen on later with jools holland. BRILLIANT.
Come on audience -- go properly crazy! You've just seen one of the all-time great performances.
That perfomance was the reason i went and brought liams album.......
love this song,so dramatic, compassionate, compiled so well through the loop system.perfect
I could watch this over and over, and very often do. A mesmerising performance from both of them
I've just found this - in 2020 ! So amazing. Massive Neil and Tim Finn fan over the years. But this blew me away - great lyrics, great guitar, and the drumming - well what can I say ! Just amazingggg !!! The passion in Liam comes through - I love it ! x
Love the progression of more instruments being added then the awesome drum beats at the end

I agree.
Liam has music in his blood.
this video deserves a million views... simple as that
this is so awesome. he really is underrated in nz, i have watched different versions of this performance for ages and will continue to.
I went to every Liam show in Boston for years and hung out with Elroy and EJ for a spell (a story that is private! nerds) but every show was impeccible. This performance is incredible! Liam is such a phenomenal songwriter. He also makes the best performances. I love this video!
I can't believe this is the shy 16 year-old I saw perform with his dad years ago at a Neil Finn solo gig! Brilliant!!!
Now, in 2022, this is still awesome 🔥🔥🔥
FANTASTIC! just descovered at Pearl Jam's concert in Perth yesterday night! wonderful live!!!

Mindblowingly Amazing Performance. Wonderful!!!!!!
Sick musician...saw liam supportin the blacks keys in 2009
liam, you're the man. one of the best musicians of my generation.
I've seen them open for Eddie twice...being there is even better. They are amazing, amazing musicians!
Saw them do this live in other voices St James Church Dingle absolutely savage !!! Back in 98 I was invited to my cousins house for lunch and I was 16 and too cool for my relations ... little did I know Neil and Liam were staying with them still a huge regret of my life !!!!!!
"Brilliant"would be a bit of an understatement to describe this man!

MARAVILHA !!!!
Five people dislike the colour of his shirt presumably?
gave me shivers
I don't know which performance is better: This or Letterman. Either way, they're both brilliant. Thanks for posting this!
Such a Anzac tribute. Only on jools
I wish I was a fan when I saw him open of for eddie vedder (twice). incredible dude.. PJ/Ed ALWAYS gets great openers.
Namaste, Lian. 🔥
WOW !
Full-fat fucking excellent!
Amazing performance!! This dude is awesome. I wasn't expecting his bearded folksinger-kind of look, though! So different from his dad's innocent boy-next-door thing in the '80s.
Not sure if you'll get this, or if anyone has already replied, but the chap at 3:39 is Ed Harcourt! He's great too.
Maybe it's in the water over there, or maybe it's in his blood. Either way Liam is brilliant. I never tire of watching him and EJ play this song.
Henry!!!!!!!!!!!
(Rhymes with 'sit')... a brick!! Holy smokes
elevadísimo
Underrated
Passion
Inspires me to grab the Gtar and make music!
I was like- huh, it's an OK representation until like 3mins in. Then I was like OHMYLORDYES
Fuckn awesome!
amazing! better than the Letterman version I think.
@mcphert1 Dude! You should have seem them at truck festival, it was nothing short of epic!!!
2024✌️
this shit is fucking amazing
Live multi-instrumentalists with loop pedals fascinate me.
I'll tire of them eventually, but for now - great.
yeah at some point you'll need a higher level of talent that you will never be able to do to entertain yourself
Such a small man with such a big beard and musical talent.
looks like dad alot!
and the dude to the right if Dave Rosser who plays with Gutter Twins/Twilight Singers/Afghan Whigs
@Lodovicok92 Looks like he's using a Line 6 DL-4
@11rabbitz They have a late Night Version where all the bands do at least 2/3 songs. Unless it's Paul McCartney. He gets about 5!
Watch out there Liam, you nearly fell off the Drum kit. Quite a lot of energy spilling out of the rotor blades even after the music stops!
Fuckin superb. He loses timing on the drums a bit at the end, but it's such a superb performance you can forgive him.
this is insane....
Liam Finn bate o tiro de meta, corre, cruza a bola, corre de novo pra cabecear, e gol! (em termos musicais :-) )
Amazing. How did gangdam style get a billion views and this one hundred thousand- there is no justice in this world.
this video has no dancing.
Its an octave pedal :)
@yuppy64 Agreed - I first heard the studio version of this song and was reminded a bit too much of Jake from the Scissor Sisters (he's got to stop that falsetto). But Liam's falsetto is much lower, and not annoying, and at least imbued with some emotion.

does multitasking get any more hardcore than this? fukn brilliant...
i found this through jon brions whats in your bag
Wow, Liam is very much like his Uncle Tim...
does anyone have any idea what kind of pedal he stepped on when he goes into the bassline at 1:38 ?
@InvisibleGuitarisst Iffin you like the use of loop pedals. . . you should check out a cat called Dub FX. . . He is actually a beat boxer who layers everything live on the spot with loop pedals. . . Pretty sick stuff. . . watch?v=Gc67C94wSx0
@wadatdatdat sweet
Callum Whats up
@anglinthemtns At first I didn't like Liam because from the limited exposure I had to him at the time he seemed to be all falsetto and I didn't like that, then I saw this and grew up a little bit at the same time and am so proud of him.
WHAT PEDAL DOES HE USE TO MAKE IT SOUND LIKE A BASS!!!!
4 dislikes...shame on all of you.
Fucking mint
