  • 5180 was the last GM fishbowl ever built. I recorded this back in 2005 on Line 3, when it was still in revenue service. Powertrain is a Detroit Diesel 6v92 engine and Allison V730 transmission. This bus is currently preserved in the Santa Monica Big Blue Bus Fleet.

    @eofficer - This was the same type of bus used in the movie "Speed"...unfortunately, it was not the same bus. To film the movie, they actually used some old, retired GMC buses from San Diego Transit. A few of these buses are preserved by Bus Enthusiasts and Transit Historians

    Pop quiz hotshot! There's a bomb on the bus. Once the bus goes to 50 miles per hour... the bomb is armed. If the bus drops below 50... the bus blows off. What do you do? What do you do? :)

    Exhaust setup would be the most likely thing to make a difference. But yes, all of the RTS-II buses that LACMTA (then SCRTD) ran did have the 6V92TA in all of them (8200-9139, 4400-4434, 2000-2266, 2300-2402, et al) and the 6V92TA-equipped Fishbowls that SMMBL ran was in group 5123-5180.

    OMG! This recording brings back so many memories of riding the 1982 GM T6H-5307N's in Vancouver which were 6V92TA and Allison V730's as well. They also had the Telma retarder systems. Nice recording! Thanks!

    I would think so because the 6V92TA is the only one that compared to it in terms of horsepower/torque in later years. I know TriMet once was abundant with Flxible and GMC New Looks, mostly 35 feet long, during the 1970s and 1980s.

    The bus in "Speed" had chrome wheels. I've been looking at lots of fishbowls on here and other places and I've not seen another one with chrome wheels. Did Big Blue Bus ever really use them? I think they looked really good on that bus.

    TheCRTman Is this one of the powertrains you were talking about earlier ?

    • @TheCRTman
      @TheCRTman 9 лет назад +2

      Yep, 6V92TA/V730. It was popular in RTS's made after 1980. I prefer the 6V71N with a V730, but a 6V92TA with a HT-748 is my all time favorite.

    • @nbf3813
      @nbf3813 9 лет назад +1

      TheCRTman Well that combination sounds pretty good, I think some of our fishbowls had this set up, but not entirely sure. Did you ride any buses with this combination ? I see, well those two sound really nice but if I had to be something classic, it'll be a S50 and a B400R combination.

    • @TheCRTman
      @TheCRTman 9 лет назад +2

      Ninja Bus Fan It's pretty good, but not entirely the best. I unfortunately have never been on a bus with a 6V71N/V730 (only 8V71N/VS2-8). Here's my main list of favorite powertrains:
      1. 6V92TA/HT-740, 747, 748
      2. 6V71N or 6L17TA/V730 or V731
      3. S50/ZF (I do like it with the B400R too, but that ZF is so sick with an S50).
      4. M11/B400R
