I'm Jordanian. You don't have to take off your shoes. This is totally dependent on the situation and people. Muslims may be more likely to want shoes off. But, overall, it would be odd to take your shoes off in the home of someone you don't know well. Hahaha u agree. I still don't get it but khala/ Khalti/ khalto.... just mean aunt in formal Arabic and not necessarily in conversational it means wives sister vs husband brother etc.. makes sense. I guess.
The feet in front of someone isn't just a regional thing. It's the same in Palestinian families also. Generally the reason is that this gesture is actually saying that they are worth less than the dirt under your feet, so very insulting!
It feels like 50 million. ;) And it is just fine until you have "auntie's" with the same name...and your mom is on the phone and hands it to you and says "your Auntie Mary is asking about you. Talk to her."

The etiquette of taking off shoes is sensible. It is annoying if someone comes with his dirty shoes and enter a clean house
The feet in front of someone isn't just a regional thing. It's the same in Palestinian families also. Generally the reason is that this gesture is actually saying that they are worth less than the dirt under your feet, so very insulting!
