  • It was way back in 1971 when I was just a nipper that I last had a cone of chips from Berriman' Chip Van, it was located at that time in Thomas Street at the rear of the Waterloo Public House, today Tregs shoe shop.
Yesterday the 8th of June 2011 a little piece of history was brought back to life, when Berrimans Chip Van finally rolled back into town & it was once again frying its legendary chips. Which the school children from Rosa Street Primary School weren't going to let a summer shower spoil their treat.
The chip van has recently been restored by "Ian Yates of Stanegate Restorations and Replicas of Haltwhistle" www.stanegatere... for Beamish Open Air Museum, County Durham & it will feature in a new BBC documentary series 'Rebuilding Our Past - Episode 2 "Brick by Brick" ' broadcast on BBC2 13th of April 2012 along with a coke fired chip shop that is another new attraction at the museum.
The horse that originally pulled the chip van was stabled for many years behind Dicey's School in High Street, since demolished. The menu was simple & no frills, like life once was, Chips 4d - Fishcake & Chips 6d in old money, the van still has some original 1971 coke in a side hopper & some was even used today. The coke from the range can be seen exiting the van from its underside & resting upon a steel sheet which would be emptied by the vans vendor Bill Berriman,
The documentary was very good but most people that were interviewed regarding the 'chip van' seemed to only recollect the van working the street on an evening when the pubs had closed? This gave the wrong impression, Mr. Berriman worked on the wagon throughout most of the day, catering for the many shoppers & local residents of the town.
I missed Ian & Bonnie pulling the chip van back down the High Street today, and I'm also still waiting for that cone of chips, I just hope that I don't have to wait another forty years?
This footage will look really good on the Apple ipad 3
Notes: Filmed in less than twenty five minutes, once again I was on fire, just like the contents of the range!

Watching this clip brings back fond memories of Spennymoor in the fifties. As a kid we would go and see a movie at the Cambridge, then call at the chip van and beg for scrapings (bits of batter and crunchy bits of chips from the bottom of the pan) Then on to the Hut and Blenkins on Durham Rd, where we did our Oliver Twist routine. By the time we reached home at the Five Lane Ends we could hardly eat our bread and dripping supper!.

You are correct in what you are saying, as a toddler I remember it as being rather grubby but it was what it was and the chips were a tasty treat..

I remember going to get chips on my way home from Girl Guides. The van was parked across from the Waterloo pub, behind the 'Dicey' school.

It was way back in '63... I was 13 and had been to the pictures...Essoldo I think...If we didn't go home afterwards, we'd have a wander about with nothing much to do when you were 13 years old. We'd go to the chip van if is was cold for 4 pennith of chips to queue up and get warm from the open coal/coke fire.... I can still smell the fumes of the coke and the intense heat of the two pans on the fire.. How that thing didn't go up in flames defeats me. You could only get chips and fish cakes ... no fish... I remember particularly one late November evening, we arrived there and heard a commotion in the queue already waiting...It was then I heard the news that Kennedy had been shot... So strange to hear it and I can vividly remember even to this day. So when people ask "where you were when you heard about Kennedy?" ...I was standing in the queue on a miserable night in Spennymoor waiting for my chips from the old chip van.

+Jerry Harrison A brilliant comment! If everyone that was a customer, who views the video, left such a story, this could turn into an amazing thread.

I've only recently discovered this extract on RUclips. However, I was surprised to see the fully restored chip van when I visited Beamish about 3/4 years ago.
I well remember the chip van as it was housed in a yard opposite where my grandfather lived. He lived in Jackson Street. This would be back in the 1950s when as a young boy I would visit grandad during my school holidays. As I got older I used to go across to the yard and help to prepare the potatoes for that days cooking. As I remember the horse was also stabled there .
I guess that new stabling had to be found when they started to demolish the houses to make way for the new shopping mall.
I think the time that I visited grandad the chip van was only used in the evenings as Dougie and his brother worked during the day

I was one of the last children to be filmed with the van at its last locaion at the back of the Waterloo public house with old Mr. Berriman and Dougie & Dicky Berriman frying. Vary fond memories seeing it once again in a little better paint job, but you could'nt beat the fishcakes & chips off the coke fires. It was filmed by Tyne Tees Television and I wish I could find that footage I have never seen it with Mr, Berriman carrying a bucket of potatoes down the back street

The Waterloo is where iI remember it, I only ever remember eating the chips whilst waiting for the bus. The film that you mention may be part of a collection held at Teeside University the Northern Film & Television archive, if I ever get to do any research there I will have a look for it...

The chip van had numerous locations that it was located there too Brian, I remember it at Thomas Street which was possibly its last pitch. I know that Mr. Berriman once traded on the High Street with the chip van, along with another trader. If you look at the Beamish Museum website they have an section about the chip van.
