How about Yashica 50mm f1.4, is it also Tomioka made?

As I understand it, all Yashica lenses are Tomioka made because Yashica owned Tomioka.

Great video. Love these Yashica/Contax lenses. Most couldnt afford the Contax Varients BUT the quality of BOTH are excellent.

I have a yashinon 135 2.8 dx, also tamioka, that pretty brilliant. It wasn't exactly cheap but not bad for when i bought it. It's only short coming is I've got to many 135s & i usually grab the nikkor q 3.5. I've considered selling it, then i shoot with it & that's that, its staying

I have Yashinon 5cm f2 (and f1.7 & f1.8) it's an amazing piece of glass, but there are still (very heated) online discussion if it's Tomioka or not. Also, Ricoh XR Rikenon 50mm f2 (not P, S, L, just plain XR RIkenon) is considered Tomioka made

I used to have a Contax G2 which was made in Japan by Yashica. The lenses were also made in Japan but branded Carl Zeiss, so I assume they were actually made by Tomioka.

The Tomioka works were acquired by Yashica, because they did not have much optical manufacturing capacity on their own. Later, Yashica was bought Kyocera, so at the time the G system was introduced, it was already Kyocera made. Japan made Zeiss lenses are not Zeiss branded, they are designed and produces for Zeiss (Oberkochen). The Tomioka name is ridiculously over-hyped anyway.

I found it funny that you mentioned "Breaking Bad" as an example of where the 6 blade aperture was used. I can't imagine you watching something so dark.

Your videos are very informative and I also appreciate your soft style. Could you do us--who live outside the UK--a favor? Could you also say or display prices in $$ and/or €€? There are billions of us who don't use ££, and who would also feel more included. And it's quicker and more direct communication if we don't have to look it up. Cheers!

This is the utter bottom of the entire Yashica ML lineup. There are even rumors that the plastic lenses were outsourced to Cosina. If you want a truly excellent lens for the same price, get a Yashica ML 1.7/50. Don't praise trash please.

    • @Wadidiz

I also have read the rumors--maybe facts--that the Yashica ML 50mm f2 was not made by Tomioka. Regardless of which factory it was actually made in, I personally think it is the best overall performing vintage 50mm f2 ever made, except for the more recent aspherical and APO Leica Summicrons. That is, regardless of price, and not considering resale value. I think it might be better than any standard vintage Summicron. I have three copies of the f2 (bought dirt cheap), an f1.7 and two f1.4. I agree that the f1.7 is a great performer--at least the equal of its Tomioka sister Zeiss Planar. I'm wondering if the "trash" ML 50mm f2 you have is a bad copy, either from less than Zeiss-like quality control, abuse, poor storage, or some combination thereof? I've directly compared MY Summicron-R lenses with MY ML 50mm f2 lenses, and I prefer the ML, although I love the Summicron also. Since I mostly look for user lenses, the pizza lunch price of the ML, plus its significant compactness, are plusses for me. The low investment means I am less inhibited about taking such a lens out into the woods. Here in Sweden, and I think generally world-wide on eBay, the ML 50mm f1.7 sells for more than the f2. Maybe not much more; I'll check. I'll admit that if the buying price is about the same for the same condition, I would recommend the f1.7, simply because the feel of the metal is more pleasing than the plastic aperture ring on the f2. Wishy-washy, I know. Having written all this, I'm leaning towards selling out everything and only keeping mostly Canon FD, while filling in the all-important middle area (35-45mm) with Tomioka-made Yashinon-DX lenses I've extracted from Yashica Electro 35 rangefinder cameras. My by-far most-used walk-around lens on my Sony A7 cameras is the Yashica-DX 40mm f1.7, the ideal focal length for me.

@Wadidiz when I started getting into manual lenses, one of my first was a rough looking yashinon dx 50mm f1.4. I got it for $13 because of condition and cleaned it up fairly easily. Became my favorite 50mm for its sharpness and contrast. Been on the lookout for other yashinon lenses since.

Short reply: Your copy of the Yashica ML 50mm f2 might be trash, but the three I have deserve the highest praise. Maybe best vintage 50mm f2.

Made by Cosina: so what? It takes good pictures, that's what matters.

@@milkyway6080 Exactly! I think the fact that Cosina now make some highly regarded lenses, bearing such names as Zeiss and Voigtländer, kind of sillifies some comments here. D'oh!
