Hey! If you're wondering about how my guitar is running into the computer, I suggest you check out this video (if you finished this one): ruclips.net/video/awzXNl30lKg/видео.html (How To Record Guitar)
I was wondering the same thing...did you record these samples using amps and mics like the suggested video?...or is it fully software recording system?. Is it like....guitar to audio interface...Bias Fx 2 capturing and processing the signal...and sending it to a computer speaker ??. BTW...that Bias FX2 software sounds pretty badass. Great video Paul !!. Thanks for sharing. I'm seriously considering buying that Bias FX2.
I’m a bit naive with using computer effects as I’ve always used a Roland Cube or other modulating bedroom amps pretty much. Where would be a good place to start if I want to start getting involved in this use of digital effects?
I know right. That blew my mind. It would have never entered my mind, it seems so obvious now. it's unreal how Paul picked up on it and super cool john did it. That's truly hearing it in you head first.
The Music Guy's I think the slightly de-tuned B string is actually a big part of this riffs magic. It really sweetens the sound to my ear. Wonder if it was intentional or just a happy accident in the studio?!
Smooth - Santana Another Day - Dream Theater Money For Nothing - Dire Straits Shine On You Crazy Diamond - Pink Floyd The Messiah Will Come Again - Gary Moore

Guess they were all drunk as hell and wanted to record, plugged everything in and somehow this magic just happened.

TONE CHALLENGE 2 Suggestions :) - Soda Stereo: En la Ciudad de la Furia (MTV Unplugged) - John Mayer: I Don't Trust Myself (Live L.A.) - John Mayer: Rosie - Gary Clark Jr.: Bright Lights - Gary Clark Jr.: Numb
Yes, but originally it was an accident/experiment in setup, not a wah. The amp mics were set up pointing all over the room, they were nowhere near where they were supposed to be. They were just naturally out of phase. He had to use a wah to replicate it later.
I know most people like to hammer Line 6 gear, but I love it, their bigger amps and pedals come with this kind of software to dial in the sounds of another amp, effects pedals, delays, wah, you name it, in whichever order you like. You can build your own presets on their spider remote software and really tamper with the entire sound and upload it into the amp.
Your ability to do this is nothing short of amazing. When I hear a song, I can hear the chords, but I cannot for the life of me figure out the tones. (It's part of the reason why I ended up selling my electric and sticking to acoustic.) Just awesome - love it, Paul!
About the john mayer spring reverb. You can actually sidechain the reverb to the dry signal so when you are playing, the notes are loud and clear and the sidechained reverb only acts as a tail instead of sounding off with the guitar. Sidechaining effects makes it sound less washy for the dry signal is heard loud and clear, while the wet signal is compressed and is heard after the dry signal is no longer active. Depending on how you set your compression's attack, release, threshold, ratio and make up gain, you can pretty much play anything without having to sound all washy all the time👊🏻😁. Love your content bro
I heard so many people trying to nail that John Mayer tone and here is Mr.Davids who got the closest in my opinion without busting the bank in under 10 mins. I really am a huge fan of this guy. Probably idolise him more than Mayer.
Hi David For the John Mayer sound I would recommend this order: 1/ Compressor (light) 2/ Dumble 3/ Brit Carbon 4/ Gate (I prefer Noise Reduction instead) 5/ Reverb (I prefer Plate over Spring) Sometimes I use just a tiny bit of a very Short Delay (60 - 90ms)
Mayer's main reverb is a bricasti m7. The spring reverb was added on a separate track just for the muted kick. The compression was done before the amp, and a bit after the amp. :) The rest wasn't really that complicated :) P.s. since you can choose the mics, it was prolly recorded with a md421 close, a ribbon and a u87 a feet away (off center)
Hey Paul, hope you're doing fine. One thing I realized having fun with some EQ in bias FX, is that if you boost a little bit in the high mids range (before the amp) it will give a boost to that strat snap, and that could be what's missing to john's tone! Cheers from Brazil! (Hope I'm not talking BS)
I've learned so much about equipment, tone, terminology, and sound dynamics just enjoying these videos. Going to try and use my modeling amp to mess with achieving these tones! Thank you for the effort and time you put into providing these videos for us, Paul!
Both Johns have the same tone imo. Slow Dancing is played in position 4 on the strat. How to get the sound: turn up bass, turn down mids, turn up treble, turn down presence. That's how you get it live. JM's studio version has been mixed, edited, and the EQ has been adjusted.
Maybe try putting the spring reverb before the amp as that is how Fender amps have them in their circuit but you got very close with what you had, great video again Paul.

Excellent video! I think a couple of aspects of Frusciante's lead tone was the 'cone cry' overtones of the speaker getting driven hard at high volumes - quite likely as he was using a plexi driven hard during this album. I know UAD factor this in with their cab modelling. Also, on the record Frusciante uses slide for the solo (likely the most prominent effect on his sound) which will create resonant overtones from the string resonating from the slide back to the nut, which in turn colours the pitches being picked up between the slide and the bridge.
Your videos are outstanding as is your playing. Loved hearing your John Mayer adjustments - became a good teaching moment. I use a multi fx pedal by Zoom and this gave me some good perspectives.
As a beginner I challenged myself by tuning the guitar by ear to my liking, after randomly detuming. Turns out everytime a pretty good tuning to 432hz, not the usual 440hz. Sounds sweeter and more melodic. But strangely the B string was allways 2/10th flat...and I like it like that!

Hi Paul. I noticed when I use spring reverb on my katana, I get a dial for sensitivity.
