I think it's more that Phil wrote the vocal lines in a way that suits his voice... and it doesn't suit Ray's voice very well. I think the old songs suit him better. Shame they felt an obligation to play the hits.
I like Ray Wilson's voice and wish that he, Mike, Tony, and whoever would have done another Genesis album together. I understand that they started writing for a second album but stopped things when CAS flopped in the US. Hearing Ray sing some of the Phil songs does take some getting used to for me, but I think he would have become more comfortable singing them -- and I hearing them -- in time. He's great on the PG songs, and even though he didn't write much for CAS, I like his voice and the music on much of that album. Ray isn't as charismatic as Phil live, but maybe that would have improved, too. Regarding this rendition of "Turn It On Again", it's ok, but it's not Ray's voice which makes it lukewarm for me. It's the sound of Tony's keyboards. The piano underpinning is fine, but I hear synth horns dominating the keyboard sound, and it doesn't fit at all.
It just doesn't sound right. I'm not talking about Ray's vocals, just like they're doing it too fast or something. No feeling in the song on this performance.
To everyone still bitching about Ray Wilson...it's been 12 years. It was one album and tour. Get over it. Meanwhile, I'll continue to enjoy CAS, the live songs I've collected, and Ray Wilson's solo music.
I feel like the big misstep with CAS was not including Sign Your Life Away and Anything Now on the album as opposed to some of the what was included (nothing is bad, but I don’t really go back and listen to Shipwrecked for instance).
I agree @N1095A I think Ray is fine but the song overall sounds too rushed. I do like how Ray seems comfortable with the band. Shame they didn't give Ray a second chance. I think Calling All Stations flopped not cause of Ray's vocals but cause of the overall arrangements of the songs. They wanted to be prog-ish with some modern stuff with a new singer. They should have kept the poppy momentum they had and rolled with it instead. I like the album in general but in the eyes of most Genesis fans it didn't "continue on".
I like this! I don't really miss Phil or Peter. I can hear them in their own bands. The music has energy and is well played...the drumming is flawless and i think the vocal is quite good.
I wonder why nobody mentions: what also is missing are Chester and Daryl! Together with the semi-professional sound mix and the lower key, the music alone lacks a lot of feeling and power...
This one isn't for Ray. I've heard him other Genesis things and he can nail in a totally different way from Phil. This one just doesn't quite work. It needs Phil and I'm not sure anyone else can make this fly who isn't Phil.
Come on... Ray is a great singer. We all know that. You reject him, because it is difficult to get used to a new singer after 20 years with Phil Collins. In my opinion, Genesis without Phil Collins is still Genesis. -But Tony Banks is irreplaceable!
kaspervzzzbx Totally disagree. Collins had a certain style that was cemented into the personality of the band. Banks and Rutherford realized this was a failed experiment. Not to say these newer members didn't have talent, but they were better off doing their own thing.
Sorry but Ray is solo times better than with Genesis. It was sad to see the alcoholic Phil on his total demise but still, Ray does not suit with Genesis. He is a great performer of Genesis songs tho.
Genesis best singers (top three) 1. Phil Collins 2. Peter Gabriel (sorry pete, Phil sings a lot better, you're the best at the stage shows though.) 3. Ray Wilson (he did good considering his circumstances though, still doesn't cut it however, you're last.)
what are you talking about 'doughnutcookiepie'?! Wilson is awful! Granted, Gabriel is the best by far! But not only is Phil the more appropriate voice for Genesis, he's a better singer in general and fits genesis alot better than Wilson ever will. Plus he wrote better songs with Genesis. And besides, no one will ever be "close" to being as good as Gabriel.
Also, though Phil became severely B-Vitamin depleted, and horrible degeneration followed, there still is a chance that he could be restored, via regular mega-dosing with Thiamine and other Bs. This is a fact, but that window is closing fast, and Phil needs to take decisive action with a qualified nutritionist ASAP.
Should have stuck with this line up and pushed forward . The Collins era of Genesis peaked with NSOM and that would have been a perfect closure on a glorious era . Ray brought his youth and energy and the other recruited musician's were more then fine . A lot of 70's band took risks in the 90s with new singers and new material . Suppose greed and ego eventually out in the 200s . But can't see the allure of classic line up's getting back together again and playing their old hits to a bunch of affluent aging fan's .
With too many personnel changes, this version of the group was more like a Genesis tribute band that just happened to have two original members of the group, rather than the real thing. I like Ray's voice, but they really shouldn't have called this Genesis.
It shows in this case that T. Banks is not a professional team player. A band on stage has to be a team. When the old members of the band leave the singer alone, they are unprofessional team player!
Wilson's like a bloody karaoke performance, for God's sake. He just doesn't look the part or sound the part. And on that note; GENESIS, PLEASE BRING BACK GABRIEL AND HACKETT..... PLEASE!!!
This is the way the song should sound! (I love Genesis and I think Phil is an awesome drummer but his voice is very annoying. Ray's voice is both soothing and exciting, at the same time, just like Pete's.)
The band introduction makes me cringe..its holiday camp stuff..and Tony and Mike look entirely disinterested. Once they realised sales of CAS had fallen off the radar they just wanted out. I lost a lot of respect for them for how they basically froze Ray out after the tour. To this day I don't believe he's ever been officially sacked by the band. They used him and he sacrificed a whole lot more than what he gained by joining. CAS was a decent album and certainly didn't deserve the flak it got,but all Tony and Mike could see were the numbers..
Ray Wison could have been an excellent Mike and the Mechanics singer...Genesis it just wasnt right for him.. It was so awful that Phil unretired himself from Genesis in 2000 ...
ray, you tried, but you just didn't fit in this band. You can't sing high enough and you're not the powerhouse that Peter and Phil were. Your solo music is good, and good luck with that. But Calling All Stations suffered greatly from bad songwriting which wasn't your fault. (From a fan who likes Trespass all the way to We Can't Dance.)
This is the key that they performed it in during the 2007 reunion tour. Phil's voice has gotten so deep that he matches Ray's now.
It's called getting older. Consider the alternative.
Yep. That's life, sadly. He's in significantly worse shape now.
Wow Ray was a really good stand in for Phil! I would've loved to see this lineup live!
“And from Scotland.. Me!” Everyone in the audience is like “Who the fuck is that guy?”
Thanks for remembering us that basspedals exist, Ray :-)
Maybe I just got so accustom to Phil that no one else can satisfy my ears.
I think it's more that Phil wrote the vocal lines in a way that suits his voice... and it doesn't suit Ray's voice very well. I think the old songs suit him better. Shame they felt an obligation to play the hits.

Ray solo is times better than Ray with Genesis.
Ray Wilson,love you !!!
Come on! Calling All Stations has some good songs...
Calling All Stations is a great album. I am still mad at Tony and Mike for kicking Wilson. Instead of going new ways, they did a senior reunion.
CAS is far from great. Missed oportunity. Banks egotrip. Mike did not bother to contribute his best. Ray isn't a songwriter. So it went.
This line up was pretty strong but this rendition of this song sounds bloodless.
It just doesn't sound right. I'm not talking about Ray's vocals, just like they're doing it too fast or something. No feeling in the song on this performance.

Wow... you can really see that Mike and Tony even disappointed with the performance

Amazing.
Has anyone ever seen Tony Banks crack a smile?
I like this! I don't really miss Phil or Peter. I can hear them in their own bands. The music has energy and is well played...the drumming is flawless and i think the vocal is quite good.
yup yup yup..
squonkness, I've always said you've got the best taste in music! ;)
A fine specimen
I wonder why nobody mentions: what also is missing are Chester and Daryl! Together with the semi-professional sound mix and the lower key, the music alone lacks a lot of feeling and power...
Literally it was actually a split half of Genesis in 1996: Tony and Mike vs Phil/Chester/Darylin. The special magic was gone after this.
This one isn't for Ray. I've heard him other Genesis things and he can nail in a totally different way from Phil. This one just doesn't quite work. It needs Phil and I'm not sure anyone else can make this fly who isn't Phil.

Turn it on again !,,
Genesis should re-integrate Ray Wilson as it’s lead singer, and carry on.
Sorry but Ray is solo times better than with Genesis. It was sad to see the alcoholic Phil on his total demise but still, Ray does not suit with Genesis. He is a great performer of Genesis songs tho.
Ray...dont do a essay..he promove a better version for this music.. a true ransom for Genesis..sorry, Mr. Collins..but Ray..is so happy in this song!!
Genesis best singers (top three)
1. Phil Collins
2. Peter Gabriel (sorry pete, Phil sings a lot better, you're the best at the stage shows though.)
3. Ray Wilson (he did good considering his circumstances though, still doesn't cut it however, you're last.)

Not one of their better version, to say the least. In the key of A, no less. Was this song meant to be done in the key of A?
Also, though Phil became severely B-Vitamin depleted, and horrible degeneration followed, there still is a chance that he could be restored, via regular mega-dosing with Thiamine and other Bs. Its not so easy. Ray lacks too much Phil had: the charm, wit, charisma and ego. He is a good as solo artist, because he is a soulful singer.
That would have been cool if Tony joined Mike and the mechanics! 😍💖🕊️🎶
With too many personnel changes, this version of the group was more like a Genesis tribute band that just happened to have two original members of the group, rather than the real thing. I like Ray's voice, but they really shouldn't have called this Genesis.
Who is that dude? No bueno!
Bootleg Genesis
Nice try, Mike and Tony. Sounds like Asia w/ JPayne instead of Wetton- bleah.....
Parece un karaoke!!
Não consigo enxergar como o Genesis isso
I think Ray sings this song better than Phil Collins on this occasion.
I Miss you Phil......
It shows in this case that T. Banks is not a professional team player. A band on stage has to be a team. When the old members of the band leave the singer alone, they are unprofessional team player!
good on occasion, like the title track, Congo and the second half of Alien Afternoon, but nothing great.
do you notice that tony banks never smiles lol
Wilson's like a bloody karaoke performance, for God's sake. He just doesn't look the part or sound the part. And on that note; GENESIS, PLEASE BRING BACK GABRIEL AND HACKETT..... PLEASE!!!
Haha lol
@@twilightpole8634 lol
If you use a new vocalist, write some new music for him, don't recycle Phill's hits !
This is the way the song should sound! (I love Genesis and I think Phil is an awesome drummer but his voice is very annoying. Ray's voice is both soothing and exciting, at the same time, just like Pete's.)

I feel sick
Ray Wilson may not be the best singer ever to be in Genesis, but he is a very very close second.
(Sorry, Phil..someone has to be third.)
Songs are out of his range...
Jussst....No....
I agree. Ray's voice is just to Low for this Song.
Ray Wison could have been an excellent Mike and the Mechanics singer...Genesis it just wasnt right for him.. It was so awful that Phil unretired himself from Genesis in 2000 ...
2005
????? WHA
Very poor is this take it Off !!
I didn’t like this so much, Phil was better. This doesn’t have that Phil Collins Vibe
There is better Genesis cover bands than this "Genesis".
Please stop living in 1973. Thanks.
This is from 1980, Steve.
Just horrible without Phil Collins
Just horrible without Peter Gabriel
Rays is OK singer, but charmless performer.
ray, you tried, but you just didn't fit in this band. You can't sing high enough and you're not the powerhouse that Peter and Phil were. Your solo music is good, and good luck with that. But Calling All Stations suffered greatly from bad songwriting which wasn't your fault.

Wholeheartedly agree... this was not Genesis at all... Wilson is ok but it lacks the charisma of the original guys
Schrecklich, abstoßend
Is that Theo Von singing?
