Sounds of IMAX 15/70 film cameras rolling in Nope (2022)

- I've cut together some more IMAX 15/70 film camera sound footage, this time from the B-roll of Nope (2022), after the positive response to my first video ( • Loud sound of IMAX 15/... ).
These clips show the loud noise produced by IMAX 15/70 film cameras when rolling. I believe the IMAX MSM 9802 model camera was used in all these clips - a detailed video of the loading and running of a similar camera (MSM 9801) can be found here: • MSM 9801 RUNNING
Video source: • Video (Nope - BTS - BRoll - 1080p)

I can’t imagine how hard it must be to act and immerse yourself in a scene with that noise in your ear
Yeah i literally can’t hear myself think lol It’s like when someone is blaring music when you’re trying to talk, it’s unbearable. These actors are next level!
A director using an IMAX camera is enough proof that the movie will be at least good, if not great. Only the best actors can act with that noise, only the best directors/cinematographers are willing to mess with such a large rig, and only the best visual effects will be used in order to not waste all of that high quality and expensive film. You won't bother using an IMAX camera for a movie like Antman
@@NoCluYTusing an IMAX camera doesn't make a movie good
@@NoCluYT Having the biggest budget directors or the costlies does not guarantee you a good film. Some of the best and most though provoking films were not shot with IMAX or hollywood A listers.
At no point does the op claim ONLY movies shot with imax are good. They are stating that the extra focus and concentration needed for the actors means they need to bring their A game to shoot with imax, while at the same time saying that directors, cinematographers, sound people, and editors all have to study up on the extra technical aspects. Essentially it is not easy to shoot with imax so you need to be on point.
God bless the sound editors
god bless the production sound engineers!
Either that or they gonna do a lot of dubbing / looping in post.
@Pom Pom So they'll ADR the whole film? Is that common practice? (rather than a few lines and stuff)
@@ACreations891 it's depend of the scene i guess, the position of the mic, and his distance with the source of noise (in this case the camera). also there are some plugins used in post production who "learn" the noise and try to eliminate it, or at least make it less noisy
@@ACreations891Fun fact. The Lord of the rings trilogy. Every line was done in ADR. Imagine the work...
stuff like this makes me understand and appreciate the lengths actors and directors go through for the "magic" in movies. so damn cool
Don't forget the crew!
Filmmaking is a ridiculously complex medium, yup. Even the most seemingly simple of shots can require hours of manpower.
As an actor snd film maker, being in front of the camera is ten fold the struggle of infount. Actors are amazing and its a confordent craft but film making can grind you down
And now they are recording movies with Iphones and GoPros.. literally.. lol
@@Stinktierchen nope. There not 😂
damn that's loud. I wonder how they don't have headache every time after the filming day
I bet they have that sound in their head all nights when trying to sleep too
Probably depends on the scene. Actors don't have the camera in their face all day, sometimes it's at some distance. Might be less great for the camera operators, but I guess they could use earplugs or something.
probably because the film is ridiculously expensive so they don't shoot too much
cause they are grown ups and can learn how to sound stuff out
@@unc4skn244 don’t be condescending, weirdo
Years ago I was in Toronto and decided to randomly visit the IMAX offices in Mississauga since they were just a few blocks from my wife's childhood home. Not only did they give me a few cut frames from "The Dream is Alive" (which I still have), but the technical director at the time gave me a tour, and showed me the "magic" behind IMAX. The secret is that larger film formats buckle and don't lay completely flat as the film speeds by the projector lens at 24 frames per second. IMAX's innovation was to use 70mm on its side, and there's a vacuum system that pulls each frame flat when it's exposed and projected, and then pushes it off and sucks down the next frame flat. That's what all the noise is about.
The most impressive thing about IMAX projectors: the cooling system....if they don't have good cooling, the projection lamp could melt the silver out of the reflection mirror.
Amazing tech that's nearly 50 years old.
Director : I said SILENCE !!!
"Sir, it's the camera"
I remember Nolan talked about film rolling as creating pressure for actors/actresses to bring their best performance while being filmed. This sounds like a lot of pressure to me.
Sound guy: “Nope!”
I’m impressed by the horse being trained to not get spooked by that 😮
you’re a funny guy lol
The IMAX version for this was incredible. I hope it gets re-releases one day.
There's one released.
this movie was so good. It's really amazing to see Jordan Peele create these fascinating stories that have meaning beyond the surface.
Xd
it was pure ass
Thought Jordan Poole was still with the warriors
@@hapagnafjebccusnrvekti8376 That's Jordan Poole, the basketball player. Jordan Peele is a horror filmmaker and comedian.
The first two thirds were awesome. In the final third it turned into a typical Hollywood action movie.
This movie looked really gorgeous in imax. Wish more movie makers would use film, especially imax
That popcorn is gonna be good once its done.
That sound would add so much pressure to not fuck up! I’m not sure I’d enjoy the process
welcome to every nolan film
@@baseguitar02 yeah, apparently Oppenheimer is shot entirely is 15/70. Should be a great spectacle.
@@TheTactialLlama Sucks that my city used to have a 15/70 projector downtown, but they got rid of it a couple years ago. Feels bad.
yeah isnt the price of imax film stock about a grand per minute? or couple of minutes?
@@beatrute2677 I’ve no idea, I’m not sure if I was an actor that bit of information would help lol
Even louder than the last vid. Almost like a helicopter!
PTA commented on this problem when they shot “The Master” - they didn’t shoot on IMAX, but on a pretty massive Panavision 65mm camera.
Did not know it was shot on imax, cool
Only certain portions, not the whole thing. Still cool though, some really great visuals throughout.
need to rewatch this asap.
IMAX go BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!
The thought of them dubbing it like an anime is kind of hilarious to me. Watching the movie while imagining the loud ass camera in the background is also hilarious to me
That beautiful sound of photographing life at 24 frames per second and preserving the image for at least hundred years. 🎥💌
you can hear the money being burned haha, like 5 bucks per foot of film, 70mm is fucking huge
Should be 48 at least
24 is outdated
@@HigherQualityUploads Your face is outdated.
@@HigherQualityUploads It's very much not outdated. The overwhelming majority of films today are shot at 24fps (or 25 depending on where it's shot). Maybe the future moves further toward faster frame rates as a standard, but that's purely speculation.
@@HigherQualityUploads8 looks weird and all the films shot with it so far have had absolutely terrible color issues in the theater even when the projectors support the format. It just looks awful. In any case there’s a reason it hasn’t seen widespread adoption. It’s more expensive to film and master and do post on and looks bad to mainstream audiences who are conditioned on 24.
Awesome i had no idea it was shot on film
something about that film rolling just makes me feel good
That's got to be fun for the sound team.
But everyone knows they could only use a manually cranked IMAX camera in Nope...
Awesome
0:25 - Damn! Dude look like the Rocketeer.
Actors were so tense, cause they've been told that was the UFO.
acting is such an amazing thing.... imagine transport yourself into a character while surrounded by crew and stuffs
Kudos to them. I feel like the sound of the camera would fuck me up if I was trying to act
Exactly
You get used to it
That’s why they’re professionals
After watching this, I feel HAPPY to pay S$18 to watch an IMAX movie. TAKE MY MONEY. Well earned, this shit looks hard on the actors
That loud IMAX camera noise is such a huge turn on.
Wait I’m confused. How would a boom mic record the actors voices if the cameras are loud?
Audio isolation it's not overly complicated
it's a boom mic
That's where ADR comes in. In a nutshell, it's the process of re-recording dialogue in a studio after the film has been shot. Most films of that scale go through this process.
Foley and dubbing bro
Shotgun (boom) microphones have a narrow polar pattern. Meaning when pointed away from the camera (and towards the actors) no sound is picked up
Eyyy it's the Backlot in universal. This set is actually pretty small irl
Nope was such an excellent film.
That's not distracting or annoying at all.😊
Damn that’s so loud😂
People underestimate how much dubbing goes into films and action films especially
R.I.P Sound department
and people are like, 'my lens AF is too noisey, its useless'
this is the shit i love
Nope was so good
That cameraman has an entire spacesuit on him 😅
Making movies is not a job. It's an art.
Good kitty!!!
industrial sound of film industry
just realised there is a guy who is basically a walking battery....wow
Dang, that dude was a walking battery.
Rip sound engineers
I could go to sleep to that camera noise. It would bankrupt for the real experience though.
Jordan Peele Nolan Collab!
would explode theatres!
R.I.P. the sound editors…
It’s weird seeing actors act on a normal camera with no effects. Really highlights just how unnatural they look without the right context
Sounds like my inverter generator running
Super loud. Like "we have to ADR all the dialogue afterwards" loud.
The cam assist that was just a human battery stand tho
Wow a back full of VMount batteries 😅
Dialogue replacement, the studio guys are in their money
I sure hope the people working with that camera wear hearing protection.
I wonder if someone has developed an "IMAX CAM Noise Cancel" algorithm or something.
The refrigerator at 4 in the morning:
I'm still confused, how do they edit, color grade & etc on analog film...
Poor sweet sound department
WHAT IN THE LAWNMOWER!? 😂 “QUIET ON THE SET” YEAH … 😅
damn, did they have to do ADR to not have that sound into the film?
Don’t know how the actors can tolerate that sound
Now imagine having to act during an emotional scene with a lot of crying. Or being in that small conference room where the trail was in in "Oppenheimer". HOLY FUCK DOES THAT HAVE TO BE ANNOYING!!!!!!!!!!
I am heavy camera guy, and this is my camera. It shoots seventy-millimeter film at fifteen perforations per frame. It costs a thousand dollars to shoot this camera... for ONE MINUTE!
JESUS THAT IS LOUD it's hard to believe a camera can make that noise just to record a movie.
Then they remove this noise someway or just don't use the sound captured in the same moment? The cast dub the entire scene?
yeah seems like humanity has reached it's peak when it comes to technology
i’ve been there
how do they cut out the noise the camera makes ?
Coil whine? :D
how do they record dialogue?
And people thinks AI could replace THAT in a few years :')
I can see the $ symbols floating up out of it!
ADR the Saviour
Look its somewhere near Sacramento lol or is that Primm
0:06 looks like the ghostbusters proton pack
I counted. There are 24 clicks every second.
Diesel cold start
That’s really loud
bigger,louder,better...😁👍
If i know anything about physics, which i don't. You just need to play the sound with the opposite soundwave to counter the imax's sound. Then, you got a complete silence. 😂
No it is not so loud. It sound from regular projector. In IMAX used different method for film transportation. It is quite.
haha imax go brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
so, it was all voice over ?
How does the sound not pick that up? I know they record sound separately but that sound is on location. Do they just remove it in post? Hard to believe the mic can not detect the sound of something that sounds like a lawn mower running on set right in front of the actors lol
Location Sound definitely picks that up, at this level it's more about giving enough resources to the sound post team to be able to recreate all dialogue as best as they can, the rest is purely sound design made in post
👍
why is a Imax so damn loud?
So then how was Audi recorded? Was it recorded Seperately?
I don’t think the they hear that sound I think we hear it because the mic is put right next to the camera
What's the difference between an IMAX camera and a regular one filmmakers shoot with? Are the lens wider then normal ones or something?
The film they shoot is ENORMOUS, equivalent to roughly 12K-16K digital resolution.
do they have to voice over almost all dialogue because of this?
tell me when you get an answer
sounds like my passat 1.9 tdi
This might not be the first rodeo for Horse!
Where is the film real in these shots?
1.43...dammn
ok but why dont they just make it less loud?
