I play guitar right handed. I use my left hand when I use any mechanical tools. I’m left eye dominant. My left arm is much stronger than my right arm and my boxing stance is lefty. I’ve come to realize growing up I catch right handed because I had to use a right handed glove and learned to play guitar righty because we only had a right handed one. @4:00 ; South paws have degrees of ambidexterity for a simple reason that most things (ie. can openers, corkscrews, guitars, grenades,...) are designed for righties. Us lefties have to face that reality. We have to adapt to ambidexterity no matter how awkward at times.

I can only use a spoon in my left hand but can use a fork in either hand. I usually switch the fork back and forth several times during a meal, depending on which is more convenient, which drives some people nuts. Interestingly, I can only use a knife in my left hand but I can only use a scalpel in my right. I use a soldering gun in my left hand but a soldering iron in my right. We drive on the wrong side of the road, as far as us lefties are concerned. We steer with our 'weaker' hand, while we change gear with our dominant hand. It's the same for left footers, the accelerator is on the wrong side, we should use our left foot for acceleration, and right for braking.
So it's no surprise that most in that group were lefties.

So many right handed people think there is no difference between right handed scissors, but they would be absolutely wrong. When you use a right handed scissor as a lefty, you inadvertently apply pressures that spread the two blades apart. And that means there is no, or very little cutting abilities. Using left handed scissors mean that pressure makes the blades force together and cut without issue. There is a real difference...

@ChelleFish1966 It is true that because most batters hit from the left side of the plate, lefties do have the advantage when facing right handed batters. This because breaking pitches thrown by left handed pitchers, the ball will come over the inside of the plate. It is harder for the batter to make full power contact on the ball, or hit the ball on the bats' sweet spot.

I was born left-handed. The dominant eye test proved it to me along with every other thing that I have a tendency to do. I had a second grade teacher who decided that was not a good thing and she made me do everything right handed rapped my left hand every time she caught me doing anything naturally. By the time I was in the third grade I was a stutterer. That haunted me all through junior high and part of high school. I finally got it under control simply by willpower and slowing myself down when I spoke. I drew comics until I was 22 with either hand or both. I could pencil with one hand and ink the pencils with the other; my style was comparable to Neal Adams’ style just not nearly as good. I have always been a good writer and continue to be. I had all these advantages of a left-hander’s unique brain wiring and ended up an ambidextrous person who stuttered when I got excited.
Then a disease called Charcot- Marie- Tooth syndrome stole all of my physical coordination. In baseball I really had no dominant eye, so I could watch the baseball all the way to the bat from either side. I could switch hands playing tennis with ease; not so after I turned 22.
I couldn’t even tie my damn shoes for about six months. I got a little better but never recovered. Just glad I didn’t pass it on to my kids. I did pass my left-handedness to one of my kids and I told him before he went to school if your teacher ever tries to change you, you tell me, I told the teachers before every school year to leave him alone as far as handedness.
He ended up with more athletic gifts than I could ever have dreamed of.
Changing the handedness of a child is the only known direct cause of stuttering. I can testify to that.

I’m a 76 year old female who is left handed. I do most things with my right hand due to the unavailability of left handed tools, etc. The worse thing I encountered in school was the notebook paper always looking smudged due to my left fist dragging across where I had already written. My papers always looked messy 😂

Ahh! Spiral note books. The ring note books where worse unless the paper was removed which I usually did. My drafting teacher made us start in the upper left corner and at the end of class all the pencil graphite was on my left hand and smeared across my paper. He wouldn't allow me to start in the upper right so I had to hold my hand off the paper to prevent smearing and as a result I couldn't keep up. Very low grades but I knew and understood the drawings. I didn't think much of him. I learned a lot about reading blue prints from my dad prior to that class and only needed it for my industrial arts.

I use a gel pen every single day, I'm left-handed, and I don't smear the ink. Why not? Because I hold whatever I'm writing on with the top facing to the right practically horizontal and write "downhill," thus my hand is not curled - it's below the line I'm writing, just like a mirror image of someone right-handed. (BTW, I LOVE the Sharpie-brand gel pens - the ink dries so quickly and they're so comfortable in my hand. They come in blue, black, red, and green ink colors, too.)

It is very straightforward for a left hander to write without smudging . All you have to do is hold the pen so that its tip or nib is well in front of your hand. It also means that you are able to see what you have just written as well as a right hander does.

@@NickatLateNite It IS interesting that right handed people, apparently the majority, expect the left handed people to cope with their right handed world. And as we now, as a result of these posts and other life experiences, see the left handed, or predominantly left handed people all rise up to some level or degree of being ambidextrous, being able to use both right and left hands in certain situations. So we learned to cope better. I know many right handed people who can't do anything or any task using their left hand. So they are stuck predominantly being a single handed, right handed person. Guess all of us lefties should thank the right handed tyrants and their right handed world in making us a great deal more useful, productive and better at accepting changes and adapting our life around these changes. In fact, all of that would make us more advanced and perceptive. Left-handedness is definitely heritable - I belong to a Scots Border clan which was notoriously leftie - the turnpike stairs in their tower houses curve to the left as they rise. Over the years I have written scripts, poems, for a while I worked as a graphics designer in computer games, I draw images fot t-shirts etc. I sang in a band where I penned a lot of the lyrics. I hate losing. As a kid I often had teachers who I felt let me be my own boss in that I think they trusted I would put the work effort in so they didn't nag me as much.
I am ambidextrous all over the place. I draw with both hands, I can write better than most righties with my opposing dominant hand. I have no idea which hand is my dominant punching hand in boxing - it varies. My strongest arm is my left. I can use a pen and a computer at the same time (pen in left hand, mouse in right). No problems with any right handed tools. It's pretty awesome being left handed! Although I smudge all my pen work....

I personally was struck with metal edge of a wooden ruler by an older Substitute teacher who believed the LEFT hand was evil or sinister [I was told this came from the ROMANS but directly from FRENCH who were part of the conglomeration that make ups ENGLISH]. She struck me and cut my knuckles to convince me NOT to use my left hand so evil could not grow in me.
