- 2020 presented Hollywood with plenty of challenges, but it also brought its own set of breakthroughs in the world of special effects. Here's a glimpse behind the scenes of 14 movies that featured imaginative animation, digital wizardry, lifelike practical effects, and cutting-edge stunt sequences.
2020's 3D-animated films found innovative ways to animate and light their unique characters and worlds, the likes of which we've never seen before - from a character made up of a pair of pants in Pixar's "Onward" to the otherworldly lunar kingdom seen in Netflix's "Over the Moon." Reboots like "Dolittle" and "The Call of the Wild," along with the long anticipated video-game movie "Sonic the Hedgehog," used VFX technology to combine CG animals with live-action human characters and environments.
Meanwhile, a combination of practical and digital effects made Machine Gun Kelly light on fire in "Project Power," designed a thrilling tunnel escape in "Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey," and created a terrifying villain out of nothing in "The Invisible Man." Finally, from the massive battle scenes in "Mulan" to the gripping fight sequences in "Extraction," "Birds of Prey," and "The Old Guard," this year's action films pushed actors and stunt performers to undergo extensive weapons and combat training to execute some truly impressive stunt work.

Mulan is a PERFECT example of how a botched script will completely nullify all the hard work and dedication put into the rest of the film.
Yea Mulan was perfect I'm definitely excited to go into filming and acting in the near future
@@iTechX_Repairs lmao u didn't get the comment. the person basically said that Mulan is a perfect example of how a bad (or ruined) script can completely invalidate all the hard work put into the film, basically ruining the movie overall, despite the hard work of the staff and actors and everyone involved in the making.
i dont think it was just the script that ruined the movie.....
@@FirstLast-fl1co Yeah, there was a LOT of controversy over the shooting location/s and the way the main actor addressed the controversy (idk enough abt it to go into detail though)
It was bad writing for sure
When watching a movie you never realise how much hard work there is behind it!
True. It takes months of training to be able to watch 99% of todays movies all the way to the end.
yeah and some People work hard for 40+ years, cuz its their Job
And they criticize it terribly.
The money they make should tell you
Have you never sat through the end credits? The amount of people involved tells you how much work is involved. This is the reason marvel end credit scenes are such a good idea you have to sit through the hundreds and hundreds of people being acknowledged for their work.
For the most part, I find these techniques, technologies, engineering and crew skills to be much more interesting than the actual films they help create!
true dhat.... plus, some actors mega ego puts them in the same camp as overpaid nfl players...
THIS!!!
I recommend the videos on The Corridor Crew 'reacts' series - they get a stuntman or VFX person in to discuss certain scenes in films. Some are thoroughly interesting with the behind the scenes information.

trust me... they are getting love.... with alot of zeros in the word if you catch my drift haha but really they get paid HEAVENLY and GODLY if it's for one of the biggest studios. even if they are the lowest paid they are still paid DECENT!
@@Smackattackk WHAT? THEY ARE THE LOWEST PAID, THEY LITERALLY BASICALLY CREATED THE MOVIE 😭
@@Ibor3d306 They aren't the lowest paid. I mean really how would they be paid less than say a gaffer. Maybe he just meant even if they WERE the lowest paid.
@@Ibor3d306 they truly aren’t that’s what people say but they aren’t they are paid well and if not great in some cases yes they aren’t paid as high as some people but they are paid well
As someone who has worked as a background extra and stunt extra every set is beyond insane and they are so many people doing so many things! My mememorable one was World War Z with Brad Pitt in Glasgow. They shut down the entire George Square to film some of the scenes and they were over 1000 crew alone not counting the additional 500 extras. The equipments and stunt training and execution it's super hard work so when a movie turns out bad it sucks deeply for the makers because it's a real wasted investment. Either way I respect every single person involved in production. They do awesome work.
ahh Glasgow! miss my time there. So much Buckfast, so many Neds

@Par how can you prioritise movies over human lives. Newsflash, they could’ve filmed in many other locations within or outside of China. Disney were trying to please the Chinese Government through the film, so ultimately they did it because they could not because they had to.

I would say without a doubt the most impressive effect of this year was what Tenet pulled off. Why on earth is that not on this list?
But that is just mostly in reverse. But I see what you mean and the movie is really good
@@caebinabush8432 If you watch the behind the scenes you see that John David Washington and other cast members had to learn a reverse fight choreography so very minimal reversed footage is used
This has a CGI slant. Tenet uses practical effects.

@@collettecabiles racist much?
In the invisible man clip where she’s thrown across the table, it looks like a lot of force is being used to lift her up off the floor and across the table and ropes are pulling her in the direction of the table, but from the floor! I can’t help but think how brave and trusting you have to be in the crew because in just that one sene alone if the angles were off or there wasn’t enough lift to clear the table and slide across it, those would be some serious injuries at the rate she’s traveling in the harness if she hit the table edge straight on instead of clearing it just enough to thrown or pulled across it as if she was thrown.
Lots of stunt doubles have been injured, some with permanent damage but no one hears about it because stunt doubles aren’t famous. That’s why real big actors usually don’t do their own stunts. If they got injured on the job, people would know because they are famous. But since stunt doubles are nobodies and sign waivers and contracts, they get injured but it doesn’t make news because they are nobodies.
Agreed.

The ball on a tripod is not for having something to interact with. It’s for capturing illumination conditions for the subsequent compositing
