Love your network name!
Hey Chris, athom have been making these for a long time.
@@Krakenled Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment! Yeah they for sure have been around for a bit but for some reason they have never sold them on Amazon in the US. The majority of people that watch my channel are from the US and we have been spoiled with free 1 or 2 day shipping to the point that when I do leave links to the same products on Amazon and AliExpress hardly anyone ever buys from AliExpress even though often times it's cheaper there. I'm not sure what shipping times are in outer countries but in the US most things take about 2 or 3 weeks to ship when ordering from AliExpress.
@@ChrisMaherDIY
You inspired all my work. U gave me all my ideas on future projects. I'm lucky to have an engineer helping me with my work. Your channel is an inspiration to ppl like me
@@ChrisMaherDIYhey by any chance can I get govee Leda and combine wled to it with this?
I am not electrically inclined but after 8 hours of research and piecing products together I think I have my solution (I hope it all works)...wouldn't have been possible at all without these videos. Thanks Chris!
Your writing is exceptional, @chris - I expected a basic walkthrough, but you included tons of important details, along with some of the reasons/context about them. Really exceptional writing!
Wow thanks Chris, love learning about esp32 and WLED with your videos
Thanks for watching buddy!
Do not auto update the firmware currently. It will disable the microphone settings and you have to flash it manually to the audio reactive version.
I've been using the athom controller for a long time. This product isn't new. Update it to moon modules wled which is the best sound active version of wled
How do I flash it manually
@@TestCycles
U can upload modules and patches via wifi thru a PC
@@Krakenled Thank you. Will try that.
@@Krakenled Hi, is there any link to get the update files?
Thank you so much! I was intimidated to dive into ESP32 and WLED, but your clear instructions and product pairing made it feel accessible. I just set up my first set of lights, and I couldn't be happier.
I love the COB lights so much.
They really are awesome! Have you done any fun projects using them?!
Fun? No. lol I used them for under cabinet lighting in the kitchen and some under desk lighting in my home office.@@ChrisMaherDIY
Lol I hear ya! I put some under my counter and we still use them every single day. Makes a huge difference!
@@ChrisMaherDIY We do too. I have them connected to Alexa, works great!
Man this is perfect, one power plug to run the lights and esp32 not to mention the ability to run 2 different outputs. I was just getting ready to do my floating bed and headboard and this is perfect! Thank you
Hey I have been wanting to redesign my room for a long while now and was stumbling upon this channel with your room setup. I also hated my old “dumb” rgb strips that were around 10 bucks on Amazon and wanted a better solution. I have already spent Sever hours watching videos on your channel with everything I could possibly need to know to get started with WLED and making my own projects, but I will definitely be copying your amazing table when I saw the end result I gasped. Well done your videos have been amazing giving me confidence to actually start this and not use a cheep option that looks way less good.
Bro thank you !!
So simple I'm picking up a couple for my projects .
Wow this is nuts! I'm really glad this stuff is affordable now
love this controller as it supports the full range of voltages, it is now in my basket. It, or something that looks similar but a different name, is available in the uk.
Awesome! Glad there is something similar available over there!
yes, does look the same but it does not say its got a built in mic like the one in this video
Which one did you find, I’m struggling to find one in the UK

Yeah buddy!
Would you say the SK6812 are you favorite LED strip at the moment? You do so much, and talk so fast through everything, that I can never tell what your “go-to” stuff is at the moment!
Your videos are the best.
Please make videos with generic esp8266 board and 4 pin led strip ... where there are two data wires along with vin & ground.
Thanks! I'll put that on my list of projects I would like to get to eventually! Thanks!
Uww this could an alternative to a quinnLED or domestic automation board. 🤔
Who else is a grown child and chuckled when you said, "stick it in the D slot". 🤣🤣🤣
Legendary. Thank you Chris.
Much love ❤thank you for this 🙏please keep up the great hard work, content and videos
I wish they can make one of this controllers Apple HomeKit compatible, so I can integrate it to my eco system and have some cool automation wit all my others lights I know Apple HomeKit has a lot of limitations but for example all the lights at my front yard at night are set to stay at very low brightness very very nice amber colors but when motion is detected all lights change to bright almost day light and look amazing and when the sensor stops detecting motion all my lights return to the low brightness… awesome video thanks for sharing
Sames as the ones from Gledopto, even the packaging 😅
That's because it is the GLEDOPTO Controller just rebranded.
Chris, your videos are the best! So helpful! Will you create a tutorial regarding WS 2812 LED panels?
Do u mean matrix panels?
@@Krakenled yes. I have an 8 x 8 ..haven't figured out how to configure with wled
@@3papproductions103
There is section for matrix. Personally I haven't setup matrix panels. I have 32*64 and 8*32 panels but wasn't happy with what wled can do. There is a new release soon but there is also night driver software for matrix. There are plenty of RUclips vids on using matrix with wled
at approx 3:00 you mentioned keeping the amps to 4 because thats the limit of the jst connectors. would it be possible to go the full 8-10 amps if you just cut the jst connector off and put the wires from the strip directly into the controller?
Ditto on this question
I m curious as well
Thanks for watching and great question! If you cut off the jst connector and use the wires on the strip I would maybe then go up to 6amps. The wires on the strip are either 20 or 22 awg which are pretty thin. If I wanted to go higher than 6amps I would then solder my own thicker 18awg wires and then go up to 9amps if needed keeping it a little below what the controller says is the max which is 10. Hope that helps!
thank you for the clear and detailed answer!@@ChrisMaherDIY
Sadly cutting the wire off won't help much since those aren't the limiting factor is the LED strip itself, not the wires. Whatever diameter wire you attach to a generic ws28xx strip you will not get more then 4A into a single edge connection or about 8A into a middle connection. The strip just has too much resistance on it's copper tracks to allow for more hence why we need to do power injection to combat "voltage drop" (which in actuality is combatting the resistance by adding more copper).
There are controllers out there which have power distribution and fusing all on the controller itself, but not on Amazon.
Thanks so much for your videos, they've been very helpful on my journey to set up some cool LEDs in my kid's bedrooms.
Have you looked at or tried the dig2go? I would love a review from you or some insight on your channel, it looks like a great all-in-one and easy way to get some lights set up.
I love your videos! I’m having trouble getting WLED working, not sure why. I’ve followed the instructions on several RUclips videos… help.😂
Best to start with pre-assembled hardware and a WS2812b strip and these new controllers seem like a great solution for the hardware!
@@JB-fh1bb are those the red pre loaded ones on Amazon?
Thanks for watching and bummer your having issues! Anytime something doesnt work, it usually comes down to the grounds are not connected together, jumper wires are defective, or I forgot to update the gpio field in led preferences to the correct data pin i'm using on the esp device. Also make sure the arrows on the led strip are all pointing in the same direction which is away from the controller. Hope that helps!
@@EasyDoesIt70 I can’t speak to which ones you see on your local Amazon store, but there’s a link to the mic version in the video description and the top comment. Happy lighting!
Thank you very much Chris!
i hope everyone else has better luck than I have with this device, I have had two of them and neither one will operate as it should, it is inconsistent in the operation, sometime it will show up as connectible to Wi-Fi, but most of the time it is not an option. It does not work well either with the manual button. It may work better with the 12 volt version.
I hear you. After watching Chris set this controller up I purchased all of the gear and set up 10mtres in my slatted wall, but the controller is not playing the game. if you have any solution to the problem I would love to find out
Thank you Chris.
Thanks as always buddy!
Hey Chris, this controller only has a esp8266 processor. Get an athom with the esp32 as is a superior controller
Thanks for watching! The first link in the description for the controller is the esp32 version. The second link is the 8266 variant. But for sure I will always go with the esp32 type!
love the vids keep up the good work
Thanks so much!!
have you put a 2nd led strip on the spiral yet?.. you have another side that is empty and having 2 led strips, they would face each other by default in most places. meaning, you could get some interesting color mixing between the 2 opposing led strips facing each other in that wooden spiral etc... cool video thanx
Hey Chris do you think you could make a video about custom led puck lights and using wled to control them?
Is the data output from this 5V or 3.3V? If I used this would I still need a level shifter if there is 15ft between the controller and strip
Great video Chris! I have two questions. 1) Does this ESP WLED controller offer the same results like the original ESP? Which one do you prefer an why? 2) You connect the SK6812 strip with black AC power supply but on your desk you use a 60A power supply. When can i use the one or the other? Whats the difference? Thank you for your time. God bless you
Could you show how to wire this to power that doesn't plug in to an outlet?
Very cool. Love these videos as I'm about to start a room make-over myself and lighting is going to be a key piece of it. I do have some questions that might be worth making a video on as I'm sure it's a topic others would be interested in?
I'm finishing up designing a new desk I'm going to build that'll handle all of my requirements for my office / recording studio. The desk is going to have multiple zones worth of lighting in that there will be ambient sections, work lighting sections, and tron style rail sections that I would optionally want to activate music syncing on. Plus there will be several other objects with lighting around the room as well (a ceiling mounted acoustic treatment with back lighting, accent lighting around the room, and a few more ambient zones). I really want to have a hardware controller for the whole room, not just to change scenes for the whole room, but also to be able to adjust individual zones on the desk or elsewhere in the room. The only way I can see to really do this easily with WLED is through Home Assistant.
Hence my questions mainly revolve around how to take something like a stream deck (or other equivalent hardware with buttons and knobs) and set it up so the buttons can change scenes, can turn on and off the music syncing, and have some of the knobs directly adjust the brightness of certain zones as well as cycle through colors on those zones? Basically a master control panel for the room that will sit on the desk so when I sit down I can control all of the lighting in the room as I desire without needing to open an app or webpage.
Cheers again for the great info on this topic!!
Is it possible to add an external button with this controller so that the controller can be hidden?
On the Amazon link, what is the difference between "MIC" & "Mic with Download"? (on the product image a UART logo is on one)
Thanks for watching! From what I've read, the UART version has a micro usb port on the board that you can access by popping off the white main housing. This would be beneficial if you wanted to connect directly to your computer to do updates instead of over the air. I have not played around with the UART version but my understanding that is the only difference.
@@ChrisMaherDIY awesome thanks.... love your vids.... i have watched a bunch of them... keep up the great work!!!
Thanks to your video on this. I picked up one to install 12v lights on my Jeep. The mic was not set up correctly on the controller, and I thought it was defective. Turns out the pins were not programmed right. Luckily for me, the instructions explained what to set it to.
Cool! I'm doing the same thing! Just curious... where are you putting lights on your Jeep? Fenders? Interior? Exterior? I've connected the controller to my auxbeam so I can power it on/off on demand. Would love to see your setup!
So far I have only added lights to the inside. Under dash, under seats. The plan is to add lights inside the speaker grills as well. Matrix on the back windows to display pixel art, graphic equalizers and scrolling text. (I have a 1800w speaker system installed) On the outside I will run lights the full 360°. Underglow everything. Lights in the fenders, front grill, hood vents, wheels, and even open the factory lights to add RGB. All of it running from a dual battery so it can run with the engine off and the radio blasting. @3papproductions103
@jply87 .... wow... I'm thinking about doing many of the same things. Literally just put a comment asking Chris to consider a video regarding an LED matrix. I've been thinking about creating Plexiglas "shield" to add to my tube doors that have a series of LED strips. Can I connect with you on social media? Might be cool to exchange ideas.
@@3papproductions103 The tube door idea sounds cool. Connecting on social media is not an option. I actually don't use any social media outside of dropping a comment on RUclips. Have fun with your projects.
I can see wheee there’s potential but things aren’t lining up accurately. Still a work in progress for sure.
I need help...for the first example you showed, if I wanted a higher brightness than 4000 would I need to cut off the connector and solder the wires together or what do I do?...I'm working on a tray ceiling and I need about 50-60 ft of LEDs, your video is amazing and has been the most helpful so far pls help.
great information and video. what would you say would be the longest led run you could do with each strip and what power supply would be best. i probably want to do about 20m but think i may be better doing on lots of different runs. i would prefer the cob strip but it seems a lot.
Imagine if you could make that into a giant wall clock.
I bought 2 16 ft fcob strips, 12v power supply and the controller and got nothing but flickering. I'm going to try the 5c pcbs with a different psu and see if i get a better result. For an off the shelf product you shouldn't have to add a resister to resolve flickering.
Great stuff Chris. Always very informative! Can the controller be updated with the latest WLED firmware?Cheers
If you can make a video to show what's inside this controller and compare it with the normal esp32
Hello,
The maximum number of LEDs on this controller is 800, but you put 1200 LEDs ws2815 or are there 800 LEDs on each GPIO? Do all 1200 LEDs work with only 12 v and 10 A?
Good video. Keep it up.
Hey Chris, great video. I see that you connected a 5v ledstrip (5 meters 60 led pm)? If so did you notice the limit the controller gives (10A) where de 5v Ledstris needs more (18a), how does that affected the strip?
How do you sync that to the tv light the Phillips Hue Sync box? I think this has more features and more fun…
What are your thoughts on QuinLED's Dig2go controller? Seems like a very good value for complete plug & play solution for $50-65.
Hey Chris! Great work! Quick question: Have you tried placing a sheet of diffuser over the spiral? I’m wondering how it’d look with something as simple as that.
Looks awesome as is, by the way!
Hello, great video. I have watched a couple of your videos now and subscribed to your channel. I have purchased 3 x SK6812 RGBW LED strips as I need a 12 m run around the perimeter of my room. What power supply would you recommend for my setup? Cheers Matt (UK)
What wattage 12v power supply for the COB lights? They show several -120v, 96v, 72v, 60v, 36v. Thanks for your awesome tutorials Chris!
Should you use a fuse for this kind of setup?
How can you do hard wire this led strip to a home switch?
Hey Chris! Love these options! Do you have a recommendation for strips that bend sideways rather than vertically?
Great question! Id like to know that as well!
which controller supports apple home kit? Can such controllers be connected to a regular power bank?
Thumb shows ws2815 but not in the video?
Hi Chris your work is incredible and inspired me to do some things. I am new to led strips so i want to wire my pc setup its about 6 meters long with the SK6812 60 leds/m. I'm gonna combine it with the wled controller but i'm not sure about the power supply. From what you said and some articles that i read (correct me if i'm wrong) i need a power supply that has 5v supply voltage, power of 300 watt (found online that consumable power for 1m SK6812 is 43,2w) and energy consuption at 60A (also found online that is 9A per 1 meter).
good vid bro
Hello Chris, congratulations on your video, I really like them all.
Does this controller not need to add a resistor if the tape is too far from it?
Can that controller be used for outside my home led lights?
I would wish for more clarity in the video; Make chapters and put a text on the screen so we know that 'NOW IM DOING THE WS2815' and 'NOW IM DOING THE OTHER ONE' etc, and be more clear with the wiring. also please say what product youre using instead of saying 'this product' because then I have to pause the video and squint my eyes looking for the model number. With love ❤
I'm wanting to put some of these around the rear of a a 16' long church stage. Was there a reason you went 12V over 24V?
Awesome video!
I've tried to use this controller with the btf ws2814 but wasn't able to get it to work. I'll have to give it another try...
Can I power this with a 20v tool battery directly? Or should I run a 12v step down converter?
Couple quick questions if you don’t mind. Looking at the BTF lighting WS281 4 32 foot Cobb strip and the. Alitove 24v 144w. Wondering if I can extend the strip lights past 32 feet and if so, would it require a power injector. I’m also looking at the ericsity wledesp32 to control everything and not sure if that has any length limitations. Thanks so much just getting into this brand new.
Hey Chris, very nice video. I was wondering how important is it to get the exact number of LED's on a strip correct?
@ChrisMaherDIY, thanks for finding new things to simplify LED installs.. Quick question, the controller with mic, can you disable the mic, or is it all dependent on what is selected in WLED as to whether the chosen settings use the mic or not?
Thanks for watching and great question! It depends on the effect you choose. The mic will only engage if you select an animation/effect that is a sound react one. You still have all the non sound react animations and effects available that you can choose where the mic will do nothing on those. Hope that helps!
you can disable the mic in WLED "sound settings" section
What do you mean by Swap: W & G on 24v Cob RGBW: SK6812 configuration?
Great videos. One thing I'm not sure of is the benefit of running 24 vs 12 volt. I understand that with greater voltage you can run smaller gauge wire. Why would I want to purchase the 24 volt instead of the 12-volt? I'm going to put LEDs around the perimeter of my game room. 88 feet. Would I be better off with the 24-volt? Will I be able to run all 88 ft off of one power supply? I'm assuming I could run 2 44ft strips off of one controller. Any help would be appreciated
The link for the controller says it can only control 800 LEDs but you did more?
With the 5v, sk6812 strips, can you connect 4, 4m strips like the first example with 1 power supply without any power loss? If no, how big does my power supply need to be without power injections or is that unavoidable? Thanks!!
Wondering if you can do a video using the module for turn signal lights and sequential and stuff?
Hi Chris great video!
I ordered 20 meters of the BTF FCOB WS2814 DC24V 784LED/m 70IC 10mm width version.
My question is will this controller be able to run 15,680 leds? Led strips calls for 24V 3A power per 5m, hence my total load would be 12A but the Ericsity controller rated for 10A max. Your thoughts?
Was wondering how you made spiral template to mount leds in spiral. please elaborate..thanks.
Hi Chris,
Great content, keep the coming. Could you use this to extend the strip length of a Govee M1 beyond 32' replacing the Govee controller with this one and utilizing the Govee power supply??
Test Challenge..... :)
What is the difference with the Esp8266 board?
Chris and all the Chris community. Here is an open question: I purchased all the items on this video and followed all the instrucions up to minute 5:42. However the intensity of the led lights is not bright enough. I think I have three options.... 1) use a 24 volt power supply; 2) Do power 12 V power inyection for each led strip... or 3) Raise the automatic brightness limiter to XXX mA. Anyone knows the solution? Alberto. Houston TX
Alberto, did you fix it? Because I was wondering to make the some setup 15m of LEDs, have them with the 2 GPIO outputs (7,5m each) and I was gonna get a 12v 10A power supply, and I don't want to have power injections or some, cause it will look awful. Let me know something about that
Hi Chris, love the videos! Q: For the 12v cob lights you linked, which are 21W / m. 105W total (5m strip). The 12v power supply you linked is 60W. Are you just limiting the Amps in WLED so that the power supply is fine? Trying to recreate your spiral project, so i assume this combo of power and 12V lights is fine? Thanks.
Can it control a simple two wire white LED light strip (smd 2835)?
Hello first of all thanks for your videos i'm new to WLED and i found your videos very explicative... I'm going to buy a controller like on the video and i wanted if it is possible to connect 2 (5meters FCOB 720LED 24V) in just one controller? Thanks
Great video as always. Question. What would be the benefit of buying this controller over the Domestic controller you reviewed a few weeks ago? Thanks.
I was wondering the same thing…. Which one has a better bang for your buck?? This one is obviously cheaper and I wonder if there is a big difference in performance if any?
They both have their advantages I would say. The domestic automation controllers have a built in relay and fuse plus have simple attachments made to connect different switches, sensors, and more. I also like that their controllers come with a jst connector already attached and I prefer their lever system for connecting wires since I can clearly see what's going on. I would say the advantage of this controller by ericsity is that it supports 5, 12, and 24 volt strips. But overall they both are great products!
So the controller says it supports max of 800 LEDs, but I see you connected 1200 and it runs fine. Is it safe to say it can control more than 800 LEDs?
Nice video, BUT... What is that levitation headphone stand at 7:11 ? 😳
Can i use to connect to a CELL PHONE'S HOTSPOT network???? Since where I want to install 3 of these devices I don't have wifi I hope you can help me thanks community
Yes, as long as your hotspot supports the number of Lights you will have attached to it and whatever you're using to control it with like your phone. Just need to know what the hotspots name and password is when you set it up in the app software. He mentions this when he talks about if setting up on his home network. You will just use your hotspot information instead of your home network information please note that most Wi-Fi hotspots especially if they are based from someone's phone will often have a low-power or Les use or timed power off
I’m having trouble with the power supply. Do you have to to have the 5v power supply connected? I have 12v leds and I tried to connect a 12v power supply to the line inputs next to the barrel plug and the controller doesn’t turn on. Thanks!
Do the COB LED's typically come with the pre-installed diffuser?
Yes. They not visible LEDs like the other strips.
Of course I don’t have a barrel slot for the power I have to wire the power to the damn controller
Bought the esp32 with WLED and audio for a matrix combo. Found that the wireless worked intermittently with 5 volt input to the controller. When I use 12 volt it works fine. Had to add a buck converter because matrix panel are 5 volts so I could use just one power supply. Pulled out what hair I had left before I accidentally grabbed a 12 volt supply to solve the problem. I would be interested to know if anyone else has run into the same problem.
do you have revommendations for ww/cw LED strips and controller? i wanna make some ambient lighting in my kitchen and hallway. nothing over 5m and im unexpirienced in this. used only govee lights until now but for this i dont need RGB or adressable strips. just dimmable and with good whites :D
Thanks for the informative vid. Any suggestions if the wled app can’t find the lights? Connected phone and lights to same network but still the lights not found.
Can you please help. I am trying to finish my son's Gameroom and I want to add LED strips to the top part of the wall. Can you please provide a list of things I need. Room measures 11ft x 11ft. Thanks
Thanks for watching! I would watch this video for a good breakdown of what I used for a larger install. All the links should be in the description of that video on things I used. ruclips.net/video/SpD_fhfP5ys/видео.html
Does this have a logic level shifter built in?
I'm having issues where I want to connect 8 1m strips in parallel, but they get weird after I connect more than 2. The wifi isn't usable and the lights don't respond. I've tried a signal amplifier with no luck
I'm planning to use the BTF-LIGHTING WS2815 Light Strip and ESP32 WLED Controller with the power supply you recommended for my Kitchen remodeling project for the accent lights on top & under the cabinets. If I play music will the MIC on the ESP32 allow the light strip to match the beat of the music? Also, can I connect this Controller with the Alexa App? I didn't hear you say anything about that in your video, so I was curious before I purchased it on Amazon. Thanks again for the Full Walkthrough video.
Chris, I've been watching all of your instructional videos regarding WLED and they are very well done.
Do you have an instructional that shows how to extend the controller module from the beginning of the strip?
I'm hoping this can be done without affecting the strip lights.
(5v 15a power/5m strip)
Looking forward to your feedback and thanks so much!

Why are my led blinking wild ? And colors can’t reliable be changed. Saw somewhere I need a level shifter because of data pins often run 3.5V instead of 5V on LED. What is a solution for those closed boxes where no 3.5 and 5V reference is available ? Why you have no problem during video ?
Hi Chris,... anyone had any issues with the wifi setup on this? I can connect to my home wifi but a static IP doesn't seem to work and setting to DHCP picks up an IP not in my home wifi subnet but strangely enough I can connect to that IP. Factory reset doesn't seem to work either, pull the power 5 times. I am on version 0.14.0 of software there is a 0.14.1 maintenace relase with a few bug fixes.
My WLED app does not have the sound setting tab as shown at the 3:27 mark. The manual says to access that to configure the mic. How do I get the mic to work or get this sound setting tab to show? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
