Dear maam Im starting to follow your videos recently . Im doing linguistic subject for my higher education your videos are extremely helpful for it they were crystal cleared and easy to understand thank you so much for this attempt and I wanna know what is Tone Unit as well as what is tonic Syllable could you please give brif explanation regarding them.
what i like about intonation is that it shows our relationship, in a way, to society. its interesting to notice how people speak and make guesses as to why they said that in that tone haha
Excellent Explanation. Could you please tell me the intonation patterns: a) He also explained to us how they change while flying. b) Who knew that a Muslim and Hindu boy could not sit together?
Hello ma'am. , Please accept my warm compliments for such an informative & interesting lesson on intonation patterns. The way you speak & present yourself is simple & so clear that even a non - native speakers can easily follow. I had studied that yes or no questions are called verbal questions but for the first time I got to know about closed questions. Wh type questions are called open questions. Great! .Normally tag questions are academically taught but you have taught them practically. Thanks a lot. Every word of yours reflects warmth & desire to educate aspiring fluent speakers. With best wishes. Vishwas Gatne India
Oh thank you for this lovely comment! 😊 It really made my day. Creating videos and putting them up on YT is a lot of work and sometimes a bit lonely (very different to teaching in a real face to face class) so it's extra nice to receive such a wonderful comment! It encouraged me a lot to continue with my work. Thank you!! 💛
Thank you so much we have learned a lot from you and we are appreciated your efforts with us kindly, we need a video regarding negative questions and intonation patterns Thank you again and again
Thank you for your lovely comment :-) So, the intonation pattern doesn't really change if the question is negative. For example: Open Questions (falling intonation): Why did you come? (falling) Why didn't you come? (falling) Who is here? (falling) Who isn't here? (falling) Closed Questions (rising intonation): Have you bought the cake? (rising) Haven't you bought the cake? (rising) Are they here? (rising) Aren't they here? (rising) Remember these intonation patterns show grammatical functions (the ones I explain in this video). Of course we can also use intonation to show attitude and emotion (e.g. surprise) which usually uses a rising intonation, so then the patterns might be different. But if the questions are said in a neutral emotion, use the pattern I explain in the video. I hope this helps!
You teach very hard and difficult lessons in an easyyyyyyy way as I suddenly say oops guess what I learn all of them in just 20 minutes and there is no need to study a lot of phonetics books.
Question! My teacher gave me a photocopy about the English Intonational Patterns. Everything is the same except the queastion tags. She writes that seeking confirmation=falling intonation and asking for information=rising intonation. Which one is more preferable?
Hello! There isn't really one definite rule because it depends on so many other factors: the content, meaning, mood ... That's what makes intonation a little more complicated than grammar where you have strict rules.
Even the rising intonation is so calm n composed in British English.. That's why an uptalk/upspeak isn't unsettling in your accent, whereas the Californian even normal speech is so unnerving n condescending to bear for even a few seconds.. On top of it, If the nasal sound is thrown in the mix, then it's really a torture.. This is where US and British female speech is at their farthest of each other. I'm also a woman from the other side of the world, so it's not a sexist comment.
Yes! You could speak with a flat intonation, which would make you sound bored, uninterested and monotonous. English naturally does not have a flat intonation but instead quite a wide pitch range, so it's important to learn more natural sounding intonation.

So, the intonation pattern doesn't really change if the question is negative.
For example:
Open Questions (falling intonation):
Why did you come? (falling)
Why didn't you come? (falling)
Who is here? (falling)
Who isn't here? (falling)
Closed Questions (rising intonation):
Have you bought the cake? (rising)
Haven't you bought the cake? (rising)
Are they here? (rising)
Aren't they here? (rising)

Thank you so much madam.
Hi, it is a pleasure! Could you please tell me if the negative and positive statements end in the same patterns of falling intonation?
Hello! There isn't really one definite rule because it depends on so many other factors: the content, meaning, mood ... That's what makes intonation a little more complicated than grammar where you have strict rules.
Am a new on your page, I want improve my vocabulary

I know that you are a successful Dip TESOL holder. You are expert in phonology.

Falling intonation
Hi Billie. Your content is great. Where are you from? I like your accent.
Thanks 😊
Hello mam..Isn’t there a falling -rising tone?..The book I am following is mentioning that too......
Hello Smit, yes there is! I'm keeping it very simple in this introductory video. I'll post a few more on the topic soon where I go into more detail! 😊
Hello.Greetings from Argentina.I would like to know about Fall-rise intonation. What is the rule there?
A good question! I will consider this for a new video! :-)
Can you tell me that this is the rules of intonation.
Californian girls typically speak with rising intonation, whether it is statements or questions.
Yes, very true! It's sometimes also called valley-girl intonation.
Falling in open questions.
Is there anything like a flat intonation?
Yes! You could speak with a flat intonation, which would make you sound bored, uninterested and monotonous. English naturally does not have a flat intonation but instead quite a wide pitch range, so it's important to learn more natural sounding intonation.
@@BillieEnglishthank you for the reply
Thank you very much! I'm a student and this video was a great help for me💝
