  • Have you ever heard a Land Rover Discovery II that sounds like this, and revs so hard? This is still running the Bosch Motronic management system, but with the magnificent ACT Products Triple-Throttle Carbon Fibre Plenum chamber to replace the more familiar banana-bunch inlet. The engine was built and installed by the RPI Engineering team, in a vehicle that was originally a 4.0 Litre. It is a 4.6 with Merlin F85 cylinder heads, a sports exhaust system, and the larger Mass Air Flow (MAF) meter from the 4.6 Range Rover. This video was made after the vehicle had a Tornado Systems live re-map on the rollers. More V8 performance: / tornadosystems

That Disco sounds great and has no problems revving either. Great vid!

Tornado Systems can make the Bosch Motronic managed "Thor" engine (just like this one) run out of the vehicle as a standalone unit, so you can transplant a similar engine into your project vehicle. No need for an aftermarket ECU any more! Most Rover V8 engines have several different lives, and around four a month (both GEMS and Motronic) are finding their way into new homes around the world.

So what was the HP and Torque achieved on that dyno run?

Very interesting. There aren't many mods for these old "Buick" V8 engines.

Hello brothers, the owners of land Rovers. I want to do my V8 but my English isn't very good. Please tell us about these cylinder heads how do they differ?

    Hi mark adams.
    04' D2 4.6 thor motronic.
    Doing also some off road.
Don't know between piper 270 or 285 or torque max or you have other recommendation.
The tornado should be after choosing one of the above?
what engine mod would you recommend?

+Richard Friday Hi Richard - I'm really sorry for the slow reply, but for some reason I didn't get notified about your post. There's a power plot on the RPI Engineering page, which shows 284 BHP. However we know this is wrong, as the engine is rev limited to 6000 RPM and the graph shows more. Think it happened because we have to run in third gear, and the dyno has to be taught 3000 RPM. However we believe it had not locked the torque converter when learning 3000 RPM, whereas it did during the power run. As the car is an automatic the camshaft is a little hotter than I would have chosen, but this is mainly a road car for the owner I believe. Performance is astounding, especially if you hold the gears with the shifter. Overtaking is like no other D2 I've ever experienced, as it just pulls harder the higher you rev it! Clients who wanted to use this for towing or off-road would probably choose a slightly softer cam, to emphasise the mid-range torque.

Thanks for the reply and that's alright. Interesting to know though :)

Can i ask any mods to the driveline ? What ZF are you using and do u remap the Auto?

In this case, the vehicle was only a temporary home for the engine. However the standard transmission is perfectly adequate for the 4.6 engine as long as it's in good condition. However the 4HP24 is a good upgrade. We are able to remap the gearbox software to change shift points etc., but the product hasn't completed development to the point where we would be able to offer it to clients. It's just a simple matter of development time (or lack of it).

Mark, can I change my 7 pin flapper mass airflow meter for something more reliable please?

    • @markadams3982

Hi Tyrone! The Lucas 2AM flapper meters are generally extremely reliable. What issues are you experiencing? We have found a very small number of them that have open-frame ball bearings on the flap shaft which can get dirt in. Mostly they are sealed, which eliminates the issue. The electrical output is very unusual, and is uniquely programmed to suit the matching Lucas 4CU ECU. You can use the larger Jaguar version with it as an upgrade.
