- Going collecting wild fish for aquarium can be a great way to spend the day. Not too long ago I went after some Florida native fish species with Cory and Randy from Aquarium Co-op and the Aquarist Podcast. We ended up with a few different species like the bluefin killifish, sailfin molly, and least killifish. We also ran into some unidentified fish and some creepy water bugs.

Hey man, that fish that you guys thought was another Killifish is actually a darter, it’s in the perch family. The genus Of The darter you guys caught is etheostoma and I’m pretty sure it is a swamp darter. Just like many gobies, darters do not have a swim bladder so they hop along the bottom. They are fantastic snail eaters and some of the 150+ species of darters are the most colourful fish in the world. I would love to see you guys keeping them and exposing this amazing native to the public! Thanks!
I do in fact keep a few darters myself that I have collected along with 2 other wild caught native tanks, it’s just a whole new part of the hobby that is very unexplored and great!

I actually enjoy the more unusual videos fish keepers create. I get bored of so many in shop vids or in fish room aquascaping....that’s why I love watching that cool guy who takes the empty tank out into the wild at different locations and uses the water right there then catches the fish right there and Scapes with all the nautical greens, woods n rocks on location. Then he sets them all free after wards. Can’t recall his name atm .

Here where I live in Port Saint Lucie there is a spot that is full of blue fin killis , and beautiful golden topminows. I have also collected super Melanistic mosquito fish males in the same place. I was impressed how this place in the middle of the city can have such a variety of species

There is NOTHING more fun than collecting wild native fish, shrimp, plants and stuff. I have to get down to Fla. Those Sailfins are beautiful.
I have a male pro-democrat/taiwan 🇹🇼 paradise gourami named (BLUETIGER) he will be bred with a female fighter plakat bettafish the babies will be trained in self-defense against the republican gop darterfish such as the Missouri {northern studfish}, the king of the gop darters is the {tangerine darterfish}
I used to keep native fish over 40 years ago. I had a warmouth and would collect shrimp and gambousia as feeders. I would keep anything that was interesting. Flag fish, dace, crawfish were a few species I remember keeping as pets. I'm thinking of building a garden pond and stocking it with native fish. Getting out there with a net will definitely bring back some good childhood memories.

That’s a huge dragonfly nymph! The thing that was called a dragonfly nymph is most likely damselfly.

I didn't even know we have these fish in florida! I went behind my house and netted out some gambusia which i now have in my tank :p
The thin insect was misidentified as a dragonfly nymph. It was a damselfly nymph around 12:20.
when i was younger i lived in queensland australia. i collected, bred and released lots of pacific blue-eyed rainbowfish. they are the less well-known dwarf rainbowfish but are far more outgoing than fork-tail blue eyes spotted blue eyes, the two more "beautiful" dwarf rainbows. imo being outgoing is very important for fish that are usually kept in solitary or in pairs (dwarf rainbowfish don't school or shoal). they really deserve to be more popular among hobbyists.
for me it was also easier keeping them than keeping other fish because i could collect them with the river water they came from. and whenever i couldn't care for them, like going on holidays with family etc., i could just release them back into where they were collected. it was fun. but now i live in melbourne. with the dreaded 20ppm tap water, i have to chuck $20 worth of KH and GH supplements into my tanks every month. not fun at all.
7:25 that's an gomphid dragonfly larvae, probably close to reaching adult stage. These things are beasts.

Not sure what part of Florida you are...but many many many years ago I used to catch huge sailfin mollies in the drainage canals up in Belle Glade, near Lake Okeechobee. They were gorgeous fish and they were what I started with....I loved it...have no idea if there are stil
l any up in that area or not
I live in Sweden, and for around 20 years ago, me and my family went to Greece. I was hoping to collect any Aphanius species. Didnt find on the Island Creete, only Gambusia affinis. They was everywhere 😀, but it was cool the Catch them instead. Took some home, and had them for years in my outside pond. In Winther l took them inside...

Fish are curious, I lay the net on the bottom and wait till they come look , then I scoop them up. No splashing involved. 😃

What I do for catching minnows and stuff is stir up the mud really good and make the water for like 10 feet murky and all the mosquito fish and stuff come to the surface because they can't see and they come to look for food they have a hard time seeing u but they glow in the tan mud u should try it

That bottom dweller is a swamp darter. My LFS (in Pinellas County) gets them in with his ghost shrimp.

7:15 that looks like a type of DragonFly larvae.
They come in many shapes, sizes, colors.
They are all somewhat terrifying looking.
I hatched some DamselFly larvae this month and last month.
This video is great, so cool that you had Cory and Randy over there and got to take them out to nature to do some collecting. Looks like you guys had a lot of fun. Can't wait to get out and do some collecting, we live out in China and planning on getting into some streams out in the rural countryside to see what we can find. Love this sort of stuff, nice work!

You guys did this the hard way! Granted it’s fun mucking around but ever thought of getting a small crate, cutting slits in the side, open them up a bit, Putting in some bait food, submerge and wait a few minutes, catches hundreds of fish! I’ve used it and the fish can’t get out and you can sort thru and put back the rest.

I recently moved to Vero Beach FL. I have been doing a lot of wild collecting myself. So far i am keeping Golden top minnow, Gambusia, Hopolo Cats, Dwarf / pygmy Sunfish and some type of freshwater shrimp. Which i have breeding in 100% freshwater so i know its not ghost shrimp. I have my eyes on a couple of spots with bluefin Kili , least kili , and some other pretty exciting non native species. Ill be making some videos in the next couple of weeks. If you are any where near Vero let me know , maybe we can do a tour day. I would like to go way south for a weekend and get to some more tropical and more colorful species.I also keep saltwater and i hear past miami you start to get into some serious honey holes.

I have used a cast net and caught tons of sailfin mollies.. couple dozen per cast easy

So funny you guys are scared of bugs meanwhile the only thing you should really be worrying about are the amoebas but you aren't sticking your head under the water so you are fine.. great video content. Loved this video and your channel. I am in Floirda and go fish collecting. In my area, I have caught Flag Fish, Mollies, and my favorite is the Bluefin Killies so far. I would like to get some Least Killies, but have only ever caught two and didn't have my bucket either time. Another fun fish I got was brook silverside. I hope sometime soon to set up all my tanks and get more species. It's crazy you found Platies and Swordtails. I never would have thought to even look for such a thing. Keep up the videos I am enjoying them a lot.
Up here least killifish are the 2nd most plentiful fish next to mosquito fish usually
Wild Fish Tanks I am up that way few times a year and have yet to go fishing. Any recommendations for some good spots? I don’t want you to disclose your platies/swordtail spot just some decent areas I should check out.
Those green eggs are from shrimp . If you ever caught them in the wild most have a belly full of green eggs

Lucky I think maybe you need to go to a website I go to to buy my fishing nets. (Jan Netcraft ) They have small fish traps ,that you can set out with bait maybe get what you going for.
I’ll check them out. My friends and I have been trying a few different types of nets and traps, always trying to find the best and a good variety

I just got four female and one male Xiphophorus helleri that I'm trying to breed with some blue swords...looks like the one female has camallanus....which means they all now have camallanus. Levamisole here I come...lol
I don't know if you or any of your subs know anything about camallanus but I'm hoping someone has some tips. The first time I got this parasite was from a commercial chain store and it was literally hell getting rid of them. Not exaggerating. Literally hell. From what I understand the wild caught fish have a different, albeit natural, "version" of callallanus where they aren't resistant to normal medications. The ones I had before were from fish farms, generations pumped full of medications I'm sure, so they built up a resistance. Nothing I put in had any effect whatsoever. Anyone have any feedback? Hopefully someone will read this lol anyway love the video and you got a new sub :)

I have a lot of collected sailfin mollies they're awesome you can keep them in really big schools! They have really cool hierarchy!!!! The more girls the better! I have wild collected Flag Fish & baby bull head catfish! As well as the grass shrimp ( clear shrimp ) & Crawfish!! Lmk if you need some!
The little green jelly was watermeal, the smallest flowering plant!

Lake by my uncles in Central Florida
Ive seen sailfin mollies in the Tampa area lakes when we went to Jesuit high school for special Olympics try near there if you are close
Sailfin mollies are common thruout Fla in fresh and brackish water..most drainage ditches, shorelines of ponds, etc will have them..they appear very plain from above, look for iridescent green tail of adult males..they are usually in schools of 5-10..they are cautious and fast, usually best to approach slowly and stand still and wait for them to come into range..
I think that bug Cory caught was a toe biter. they have a very painful bite, ask coyote peterson :^ )
7:23 thats another type of Dragonfly Nymph. they turn into the big orange dragonflys.

1st bug...dragonfly nymph. The skinnier ones are damselflies, while short and fat is dragonfly
Long mystery fish is etheostoma of some sort, green may be volvox algae?
put worms or food in your nets, I used to as a kid and just rest it there until the fish came to me !

I know I'm a few months late and am still new to the Aquarium Hobby.. however, I believe the 2 plants you found weren't Anacharis or Valisneria. I think you found both Hydrilla Verticillata and Saggitaria Kurziana. I may still be wrong, but have recently taken up interest in a lot of native wildlife and have been to that same lake, lol. Great video!

Big dawg when those native fish breed let me know. And that last fish was a fresh water bare cheek goby. They are cool fish that eat on frozen food bloodworms mostly. I got one about a month ago from my LFS. Great video and keep us updated on the fish and shrimp 💪💯🤜🤛
Rob 93 Aquatics that is not a goby, that is a darter, part of the etheostoma genus. I’m pretty sure it’s the swamp darter as this is florida

Lucky Schmuck's Fish Cave yea, they don’t have swim bladders so they basically only stay on the bottom. Snails should be a big part of their diet by the way, same with bloodworms, brine shrimp, mysis, daphnia, etc.

Really enjoyed this video. What kind of temperature swings do you think that lake experiences like day to dark or during thunderstorms and such? I know around here in our rivers and ponds the temp can change drastically at time, from extreme heat in the summer as in like literally 90 degree water to down in the 40s and 50s during fall and winter. wildwestherp s it’s 100% an etheostoma species. I am like 80% sure it’s a swamp darter as it is florida.

Lucky Schmuck's Fish Cave yea iNaturalist is a great app for finding species and new collecting locations, to find fish, just search Ray finned fishes and then you can see exact locations of collecting, also there is 0 misidentification in the app because others can suggest an ID and the app recognizes this, it’s an amazing app for fish ID and finding collecting locations!
There is a better way to catch fish! Use fish round traps with two entrances to nearly the center. Lightly baited and you’ll catch a bunch more than what you’re catching. the bug seems to be a Water Bug. It’s a vicious fish hunter. It has a nasty bite, so be careful. Didn’t get any Freshwater Clams? They are so cool to catch. I enjoyed watching! Thank you for sharing!
Jose Montalvo in my opinion, using a dipnet is a lot more fun than sitting back and relaxing while the net is doing its thing, I would rather spend a lot of time in nature than just throwing a net in and waiting, some fish actually are easier to catch with a dipnet than a trap net, like darters, shiners, and other cyprinidae sp.

I grew up in Ft. Myers in the 1970s and would catch beautiful male sailfin mollies with an iridescent blue tail fin and sail.

Yes Sailfin Mollies are in most all Florida freshwater lakes and canals I used to catch lots of them in the canals surrounding Alligator alley now called I-75 the portion from US-27 west to Naples when I was a kid in the 60’s -70’s
