    I am on the other side of managing both of my parents care, beginning in 2017. They were divorced, so two separate situations. The last 4 years was mostly managing my mom’s care in a memory care facility. So I have a lot of stories to tell. My rule of advocacy is to assume professionals are in their own vacuum. They have their own goggles on pertaining to their own services, and are, additionally, over worked and over tired. Provider shortage is real in most areas in the US.
    I’m sorry it’s been so hard for your mom, and I hope she is feeling much better very soon! ❤ She’s lucky to have you. My mom and I were not close, and I found myself stepping up and into a healing situation for me and her as her health deteriorated. It’s important to check on our parents. If we don’t, who will.

      Thank you for sharing your story. I know that the memory care world is extremely difficult-so sorry you had to go through that.
      Love your wisdom about assuming the professionals are in a vacuum. That very closely aligns with what I observed. Everyone was qualified, but they were not always listening and adjusting.

    Beth, I’m so sorry to hear of the problems your mom is facing with our broken health care system. My husband is experiencing medical challenges right now also. Some of his problems I believe are a direct cause of inadequate staffing. I hope things get turned around because as we age it is inevitable that we all will have health challenges. Your mom is fortunate to have you and your brother to speak out when there is a problem. God bless.

      So sorry to hear you’re going through it, too. It’s totally reasonable to ask that the base level of care should come up-especially through the VA system. It’s been badly defunded, which is a choice. My mom taught in public & private schools for 30 years. Medicare should be enough to receive appropriate care at a much better standard.

    Hi Beth. Truly sorry that you and your family are going through a tough situation. I believe it’s critical to be our own advocate. We must speak up, we must ask questions, we must do our own research. Knowledge is power. We must push back when we know that something isn’t right. I lost faith in our medical system several years ago. My sister passed way from breast cancer at the age of 46. She was misdiagnosed and lost a lot of precious time. My stepmom is receiving home care. It covers a lot. My Dad pays for lawn maintenance and housecleaning and a personal trainer. My stepmom has Alzheimer’s and needs a fare bit of assistance. She’s still relatively mobile but needs assistance toileting and dealing with personal hygiene. From Alberta Health, she has caregivers coming in the morning, noon and night. She has an occupational therapist aide who helps for two hours every week and a respite aide who helps two hours every week. My stepbrother does weekly household chores and sees to the midmorning and midday breaks. My Dad takes care of the shopping, executive decisions, and cooking. I visit for two weeks every month to relieve them both. It’s hard work but it is less expensive for “the system” to keep them out of institutional care.

Sadly we also often experience poor communication and disjointed care. I am also a health economist and in my masters the US healthcare system came up A LOT. I understand so much Beth. My mom had a heart attack. The widow maker. So triple bypass surgery.
    She lives with me at 82, and I was there when it happened and called the ambulance.
    She’s healed nicely. We’re now one year post surgery.
    The worst part is when they said she needed to go to a rehab center (nursing home), she had an emotional breakdown because she used to have a part time job in a nursing home and made me promise she’d never have to be in one because of the horrors she saw.
    After it was all said and done I realized that the doctor said ok and then intentionally?? Didn’t have anyone go over how to take care of her. How to move her without hurting her. The dos and don’ts. When I asked they said a nurse would be paid for by Medicare to teach me. Well, guess what? A nurse didn’t come until DAY 4 of her being home. The only reason I got through it was I went on RUclips to get tips on what to do!! I feel like you’re just a number, and you just get pushed out of the system the minute Medicare stops paying. I don’t even want to think about any long term care we might need for her down the road. That’s got to be brutal from stories I’ve heard.

      Thank you for sharing your story. What a nightmare! I’m so glad that your mom has you and that you were able to help her heal from such a serious medical event.❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹
      It’s pretty clear that once folks get to a certain age, no one is trying to optimize their care. In my family, we tend to be pretty long lived, and we expect that, so it was extremely alarming to me the way her aftercare appeared to be, setting her up for a passage to death not a path to recovery. It sounds like you had the same experience. At the suggestion of another comment or here I’ve begun looking into long-term care insurance and annuities. It’s probably way too late for insurance at this point, but an annuity might still be on the table. I have a lot more to discuss, we do not have Adequate coverage, I now realize.

    I can honestly say, after advocating for both of my elderly parents with various serious health issues over a seven year period, that OUR American healthcare system isn’t straight forward, but is a complicated, multi-faceted, expensive labyrinth. Here in Minneapolis, Mn. I think we pride ourselves on our health care system; and yet I would still strongly advise each and every person to have someone advocating for them. I agree part of the problem is understaffing and long hours, and that the medical staff are doing the best they can under the circumstances. Even going to the ER can take more than seven hours to be seen. From my personal experiences of receiving emergency healthcare in Italy and Iceland, I think we could learn a lot from other countries on how to provide quality medical care and at a reasonable cost. Would like to see an open inquiry into this from the medical world here in the States.

    I wish I could share all the insanity around my last surgery, it was like NOTHING I have ever experienced, and it was my 7th surgery in this lifetime. It was unbelievable at almost every turn and I had one of the best surgeons around. We have a terrible problem with the medical complex in New Mexico, supposedly Albuquerque is ranked pretty high on the worst cities in the states. I went through it with my mom too in 2018, and just getting her properly listened too was impossible. Not to mention, food and medication. It was one of the worst months of her life and she's been through some things, but the hospital and the after care made it an even worse experience.
    Anyway, I am sorry your mom went through this but you did exactly the right thing by saying it like it was, you got what she needed.
    Medical care for profit is the first issue that needs to be addressed in the US and then the loans these medical professionals have for education...you take those two major stressors out of the equation and we might actually get somewhere closer to health care rather than sick care.
    My goal is to build strong bones and muscles to avoid frailty as I age...what they haven't been telling women until recently is frailty is the danger zone.
    Take time for yourself and de-stress in the moments you can, this is tough. Be easy on yourself. 🌻

    • @InfinitegardenbyBethK
      @InfinitegardenbyBethK  6 месяцев назад +1

      I feel like two things could be changed and it would make an immediate difference. The acceptable base level of care that is eligible for Medicare needs to come WAY up. And there should be earned student loan forgiveness. Many of my former City of Detroit colleagues used the public service student debt forgiveness benefit. It exists, and it could be extended to the medical profession.

    • @QuickSilverHair
      @QuickSilverHair 6 месяцев назад

      @@InfinitegardenbyBethK I don't know a lot about Medicare, but I know a little bit about Tricare (military ins.) and they are basically the same system. It is the most complicated mess.
      Also, fair warning, the first thing we dealt with after mom got home, and had to deal with for several years, were fake collectors calling on things like wheel chairs. It was so frustrating. So warn your mom if any collectors start calling, call Medicare or the offices and facilities she was seen in. Medicare scams are wildly out of control.
      I am sure at this point we could start a think tank of ways out of the mess that is US sickcare. Ultimately, the money does the talking, and they make the laws.

I had to be an advocate for my mom, who wasn't in any shape to advocate for herself. I finally told the staff that she wasn't to be given any medication unless I understood what it was for and approved it. It was such a sad and unfortunate situation. I don't know what the answer is, but I do know that women MUST speak up for themselves or we'll be ignored and pushed aside. I'll keep you and your mom in my thoughts. Hang in there!

    Beth - I highly recommend that you educate yourself about the topic of Long Term Care ......and how incredibly inadequate it is in this country. There were several segments in the New York Times within the last couple of years. Medical care for a health issue is one thing, and can vary among states and hospitals/clinics, etc. But - the state of long term care....what families do after Medicare and supplemental policies' coverage ends, is a real shock to most people. So many long term care insurance companies went out of business during Covid, and apparently now there is no guarantee that the ones still in business will cover what they promised ages ago....that people have been paying for all this time. It's truly shocking and we can only hope that it changes at some point. So many adult children have NO idea what they could be faced with in the future with elderly parents having health crises. Best of luck with your situation!
