In India there are different types of healthcare, for rich, middleclass and poor. But poor people also get affordable healthcare. Same cannot be said about UK. I broke my toes while in UK and I was paying for insurance, so I should have got all checkup done free of cost. Waiting time was 3-4hrs, X-Ray took another hour, appointment with doctor after 2 days, surgery was scheduled after 3 weeks. For a week I walked with broken toes, but could not bear the pain(no pain meds). So took a flight, came to my hometown, got appointment with doc at 8AM and surgery was done at 3PM same day. Entire expenditure was less than 19k rupees and I went to a non-fancy private hospital.

But the thing is you can also get scammed as a foreigner or as a NRI. If they find out... They cost you much more charge. For example once we came in India in March 2021 in covid. We had our vaccines at the airport in India. And when we were about to leave from India we got a covid PCR test don't before hand and the rest came out negative. But just a day before when we were about to leave we got a call from government people saying that your test actually was incorrect for my mum and her test came out positive. We were confused and immediately went to the lab and got out the test printed out. And whilst my dad went out to get those test results. The government people were already there to do a test on my mum. I told them to wait outside the door until my dad comes back with the test paper . And when he did he showed them the test paper and argued with them how can you show negative just a day before And call the next day saying it's positive. I believe they were trying to scam us into making the test positive when they came to our house to test my mum. Good thing we didn't let them or they would've altered the test hence keeping us behind longer.

@@_wokeweaklingscryoverwords_ I mean, I wouldn’t pay a red penny in Canada. But I might wait 18 months. I might not be able to WORK for 18 months straight if I did some job like postal delivery. So it might be well worth the cost which would also have to factor in travel to get there. I could see it costing around $10,000. But for peace of mind, faster treatment, it could definitely be worth it.
I did have surgery there last year but I didn’t travel there specifically for it, more like it came up as a more urgent issue while I was there, for something I originally was going to get done in Canada. So we just bit the bullet and had it done. Cost around $1000 US, for orthopaedic surgery but nothing as complicated as a hip replacement. It was a small incision and a hardware removal situation. I was delighted to get it done there tho, as it meant I didn’t wait for weeks in Canada and get bumped 3 times!

I just read an article that the urgent care system in the US is doing a critical mistake of re-evaluating the primary care provider’s decision of sending them to the ER (ICU in India), which can cost one’s life. This is happening due to corporate greed in America. Even an American doctor has written that he was conned in being charged $1500 for an X-ray instead of $500, as the urgent care center claimed itself as part of a bigger hospital system and charged the higher hospital charges.
Health care, especially for senior people in America will “kill you” if you have any major health problems or need home care. You are finished.
That is why lot of American citizens of Indian origin come back to India post retirement.

If only is was so simplistic. USA high cost is actually from unnecessarily high administrative cost, which is caused by their infuriating 'private health insurance companies' which forces hospitals hire a lot more of staff and take up more time of doctors, on top of which many cheap alternative which insurance refuse to cover and also having high premiums. Unlike some random person, who doesn't actually know the insides of US Healthcare, this is actual reason given by US Healthcare professionals themselves.

Here we don't our health insurance is not tied up with employers, which means they have to actually serve the public's needs more than what an employer thinks is enough. We also have many government insurance options as well. Plus our healthcare and pharma system are not entirely monopolized by a handful of corporates. We still have lots of private, government and co-operative hospitals in many different financial options. We still have some systematic safety nets

In India if you pay $300 PA for family private insurance, you would get upto $6000-7000 insurance coverage per visit. We can’t compare the subject without looking into the credit debit ratio as in the US, the wages are higher then India. US citizens can have their high class treatments done in India with their currency purchasing parity power. But for Indians, since the wages are lower, we can’t say it’s cheaper here unless you have insurance coverage or the treatment is done at the government health centers or medical colleges.

As someone who has been there, my favorite part of the healthcare is when my mother had a severe cold, she went to the doctor. He asked her if she wanted a pill or an injection for the cold? My dad sat and just looked at him for a bit. He Told the MD that all my mom needed was meds for her symptoms. 2nd time was when my sister’s father in law had a stroke and was admitted to the ICU. No one was allowed to see him and when my brother in law, a RN demanded he see his father, after a few days, they allowed him to see his father’s dead body. Their goal was to milk the ICU stay as long as possible. So I’m sorry but to say that Indian health care is so great is kind of hard to believe when I have this experience.
