- Hey guys!! Go fast here again. Today I am going to tune on my tmaxx beacuse I can. It may not be the most exciting video, but it is content. I had fun working on the trucks tuning, and also editing the video. Hope you guys enjoy!!!
your tune toward the last few runs was quite adequate, the temps were good and the trans shifted well. Good job! I keep the low speed on the rich side also btw, better to run a little safer than leaner.
Yeah that’s my thinking too. I don’t have an unlimited budget so I am trying to make my engine last as long as possible. 😊
Hmm 🤔
@@GoFastRC Hello, can you please tell me how I set the high speed and Low speed and idle screw to make my engine last longer? It is okay if the top speed of the vehicle decreases. I'm very new to Nitros.... it would be very nice if you replied to this comment.
This 2.5 engine is my favorite…i found it to be the easiest engine tune and the power band is wicked…by far the most reliable nitro engine I have owned
@@IsmailsGuitarWorld
Is this still relevant for you?
FAT BOTTOM END!! LOL. thats was good. the Nitrogang is here to support another member with a t-maxx!!
tune my traxxas tmaxx 3.3 everything sounds good it turns off in 3 seconds but about 5 minutes after i use it i check the temperature in the traxxas app and it's already around 270 degrees. what can i do to keep the temperature in the correct range ?
@@isaipedeoza7274 Traxxas app isnt always correct. Use a temp gun.
The other day the app showed 300F, I doubled checked with temp gun and it was bouncing around 240.
Many people always suggested to me to not use the app to monitor temps. Sometimes its right, sometimes its wrong.
Tmaxx is king
Nitrogang baby !
Alot of people continue to have issues because they do not know their idle gap(FYI, traxxas ships their trucks on the rich side for break in) so after break in, idle gap needs to be adjusted.
When you had bottom end tuned good, but just didnt like that it was "walking" all you had to do from there(but this should be the first step) is lower/adjust ur idle gap. I think after you did that, it would have been perfect.
Since ur idle gap wasnt adjusted properly, it caused you to basically chase a tune.
Hopefully you eventually got it tuned properly. Nitro 4 the win👌🏾
could need a new clutch that can cause that to happen when the clutch is bad.
Where is the idle screw? Awesome how you walked us through the tuning process but I still don’t know how to get my idle down. Nobody shows which screw to turn on the TMaxx 2.5, I see the high and low but no idle adjustment screw. I’m new to the nitro rc trucks and mine lurches like yours was and goes uphill when I don’t have the remote in my hand. Help please.
Look in the manual for the engine. If its a traxxas engine you can find them pretty easy on the web.
The stock TRX carb is adequate to get the engine to run but any fine tuning is moot. They don’t hold a tune for crap. I have a 4tec 3.3, two jato 3.3s, and a 2.5 TMaxx from 2004 and all of them creep due to the garbage idle adjustment on the carb. LSN and HSN are spot on when I tune but I can NEVER get the idle down when performance tuned. My TLR 8ight RTR tunes much better. I just ordered two Losi 3.4 carbs to test on a Jato 3.3 and the Revo I am picking up Tuesday. I will be making a video on the install and first run/tune in the coming weeks.
Sweet!! I just recently put a OS 11k carb on my revo, video coming soon!!
Feels good 2 own a tmaxx again 😀 the 2.5 tmaxx still very fast even brand new breaking it nnn jus needa fix the breaks now n the speeeed
Yoooooo Edgar!!!!!! I’m getting back into the nitro rc again lol, getting me a new tmaxx 3.3 soon! I plan to make some videos on here again as well, hope you are doing well! I look forward to chatting with you again!
Returning to hobby after 15 years, now with my kids, they have arrma electric trucks. Now i want one...Still can't decide between nitro or electric.
I'm wondering if maybe the clutch spring could be worn out. My 3.3 is doing the same thing and it didn't do that before. I'm going to throw a new clutch spring in and see what happens anyways.
Let me know what happens. I was thinking the same thing but I am not 100% sure if it right. Thanks for the support!!!
@@GoFastRC for sure. I’m loving the T-Maxx videos!
Throw away the temp Guage.
All a temp Guage does is make you chase a tune.
Adjust your idle gap first.
Its to lean on the top end.
Tell tail sign is that run on whine after wide open throttle when you let off the gas.
Look up Ron Paris Nitro tunning Bible itll be the best info you'll ever find.
That is correct. I start at .6mm and then start tuning.
How do u get it to .6mm?
@@nickstone1905 A good guage to start with would be the thickness of a small zip tie. The short 3 inch long zip ties. Snip the lock end off and stick the cut end in the card to check gap.
@@Iamfirebird360 okay cuz I got 3.3 slayer pro trying to go back to factory setting hsn 4 turn out and lsn 2 turn out flush and my idle screw they say 1mm but can't fine anything 1mm and I do pinch test and dies at 7sec during brake in died at 3 sec like it should
The best advice I can 11:39 give you....before you start tuning, I would set my idle at .6-7mm. and then start the tuning after. Also....if it starts to walk when you lean the low side, why did you not try to lower the idle.ale sure that you set the idle screw on the engine and not the remote. I like your t Maxx. It's pretty clean, very nice!
Dude just turn down the actual idle screw. The carb has 3 different screws. Then make sure your servo is letting the throttle close all the way. 👍🏼
The carbs idle screw is hiding under the slide.
Lol 😂
I did turn it down. But if you turn it down to much it will close completely when you brake, killing your engine. So you use the low speed needle as well to control your idle. Its about balancing all of the needles out, so that way you have a good running engine.
So on the low speed idle on the bottom end is a clockwise to close it and counterclockwise to open it
Yep, thats right!
@@GoFastRC cuz on the carburetor settings on the Traxxas site it says clockwise to increase and counterclockwise to decrease so wouldn't that mean counterclockwise to close it I'm just having trouble tuning my new Traxxas T-Maxx I am new to nitro
@@sambo6591 to lean the low speed needle turn it counter clockwise. To lean it turn it clock wise.
@@GoFastRC you accidentally put lean and lean sorry I'm just trying to learn your brother no disrespect
@@sambo6591 oh my bad! To RICHEN it counter clockwise and lean is clock wise. My bad i didnt mean to do that 😂😂
Sorry I'm late to the party, I just got the t maxx 2.5 today brand new. I've never had a nitro while breaking the motor in today I encountered this same problem. I played with the idle screw alittle but it still lunges and jerks at idle. I have to hold the brake or it will just take off, like as soon as it starts its rolling. It was like that right out of the box. So correct me if I'm wrong I need to adjust the low end needle to get the idle down to where I'm not constantly holding the brake?
Yes. Richening your low speed needle will help lower your idle
Is the low end needle the idle adjustment screw then?
@@mikelawson2724 no three seperate needles
Hey my dude!
I"ve appreciate this video !
From my experience and that what I heard your high speed needle is just right, don"t make it leaner .Furthermore i have noticed that your low speed needle is slightly to lean , I would open the needle round about 1/8 +-1/32 of a turn.
The idle rpm doesn"t seen to me to high ,it is probable that your clutch springs are getting "tired" over the time ,you should try to replace them.
Yeah I will replace them pretty soon and see if that changes it. I had someone else say the same thing. So it is probably right.😂
ill take all of your EZ starts that you dont want i just unboxed my revo and started it for its first tank and I realized the Ez start was kind funky so ill take any unwanted ones
Have u heard of the, pinch the fuel line test? its to see if your lean or rich on low end idle.. Pinch the fuel line about an inch from the carb side to stop fuel flow in and if engine stops running at three seconds it’s too rich, if it stops running in one and a half seconds it’s to lean..
Hi so question here
I bought a brand new 2.5 engine for my 13-14 year older Tmax 2.5.
I was breaking the engine in and it seemed to be idling real high because it would just start moving as soon as I started it. I started adjusting the idle and it did help, but the engine seemed to be chugging (lack of a better term) forward whenever I’d bring it to a stop. I richened both the low and high speed needles a bit, but it’s still doing it.
I thought about just starting bringing all the needles back to the factory settings and just going from there.
Let me know what you think.
Thanks, a Subscriber
I’ve been having the same problems.
Edit 7-7-21: well, I found out the little blue dust cover on the carb had so much "spring" to it that it was overpowering my puny throttle return spring just enough to really screw with me. I doubled up the throttle return spring on the linkage, close to the throttle/brake servo using an existing spring from prior to the engine upgrade. This really, truly, solved my idle issues. The throttle was popping open a hair after returning to it's set point, just enough to throw me off. Posting this edit in case someone else is having a similar issue.
Original post..not necessarily true anymore since stiffening throttle return spring:
I recently did the same upgrade. This engine just seems to want to idle higher than what I'm used to with other nitro trucks I've owned. I got it tuned well now and the idle holds forever, and high and low speed needles provide the proper acceleration, cooling, and pass all the tests I've ever seen/know (temp with IR gun, low speed needle pinch, etc). I got it to a point where it is not creeping at all, just like the guy in the video basically...I had to tune it slightly richer than what I'm used to in order to control the idle a bit. It's a little finicky, especially compared to HPI engines I've tuned in the past, however even with slightly higher idle, no creeping forward, and slightly rich settings, it will run through tank after tank without a single stall or issue. Again, it's just a bit different I think then other nitro engines, and holds a slightly higher idle it seems.
Solid tunes.
where are you in Cali looks close to us
Bakersfield area
Nothing wrong with a little fat down low, brother.
Need a little bit of that cushion for the pushin.
Hahahahahaha yeah. But there for a while it was super fat, like break in fat. Thanks for the support!!!
I think Im add the large Throttle return spring thats on Tmaxx 3.3 my idle is not closing all the way hopefully it fixes it.
Yeah i have it on mine and it works better.
@@GoFastRC that should use that from the start to be honest. Know i way people say the Tmaxx 3.3 is the best all around. But Tmaxx Classic is what started the Monster truck class.
I bought mine second hand, and I finally got it started but it shutters at idle what could that be?? It seems like yours like it wants to walk??
One more question, do i need a fuel filter?
Yeah it would be best it you had one. Just to protect the engine.
I just got t maxx 2.5 and it shifts to early do you know how I could fix that ?
There is a shift point adjustment screw in the transmission.
@@GoFastRC thanks appreciate it ! Also just got the transmission replaced
After watching this “bog” is the better term to use than chugging
Lol 😂 I have used bog cause my dad says it!! So I gotta thank my dad for that one!
I could use help with getting my 2.5 going after about 10 years. Takes a second to start. Once I get on the throttle it goes but when I release it dies. Any suggestions? Older sport maxx
Um maybe try raising your idle needle a bit just to let in a bit more air. Hope this helps!!
When you first get the truck the first type of fuel you use in it is going to be the one you want for its life
1mm throttle opening.. 1.5 to 1.75 low scr. 3.5 to 4 high end scr. can use thr. trim if idle too low.
Got to adjust the idle stop and your linkage. Lowering the idle by richening the LSN will create other problems. Also, get some good fuel. Traxxas fuel is garbage.
I have tried Byron and sidewinder but the truck ran like garbage. But the truck run really good on the traxxas fuel. Could you tell me what makes traxxas fuel so bad?? From what I have experienced the truck has ran best with the traxxas fuel.
@@GoFastRC byron was one of the best fuels. Not sure why it ran like garbage. Traxxas fuel has too much oil in it which causes it to run hot when the engine is tuned right. The oil burns at a higher temp than the methanol.
@@savagenoob Yeah I dont know either. When i put in the Byron it would idle funny and not hold a tune. But s soon as I put in the traxxas it ran perfect, jut a little warm. Thanks for the help!! I didnt know about oil that burns at a higher temp.
@@savagenoob Oil does not burn at a higher temperature than methanol, not even close. It's the opposite. The oil is there to keep your engine cool and lubricated, just like all 2 stroke engines on the planet (mowers, weed wackers, blowers, dirtbikes, chainsaws, etc). I don't mean to be argumentative or put you down...I just want to keep people from being misinformed, that's all.
@@mmtunphilly sorry but that is wrong. Oil does burn at a higher temp than alcohol. The methanol acts as a coolant, not the oil. Stop spreading wrong information. People like you are the reason people give up on nitro.
so if it's trying to go by itself is the low speed needle right what's mine is doing
Is Tmaxx classic can wheelie ?
The air gap and idle screw are not in balance with each other. If you change one you have to change the other. The Leaner LSN the smaller the air gap needs to be to keep your air fuel ratio in balance. Richen the LSN needs a bigger air gap. Idle will be too high when AFR is out of balance
So when I run my tmaxx 2.5 and when I get in the gas about half throttle the truck dies and cuts off bottom end is set to factory(flushed) and top end is leaner than factory wats wrong with my truck I’ve only ran about a gallon through it that includes the break in and it’s between 77 and 90 degrees in St. Louis daily during the summer
Hmmmm idk. It could be a bad fuel line. I would try Richening the bottom end. But it may be to rich, so try leaning the bottom end of the richening makes it worse.
@@GoFastRC do you think it could be a bad glow plug someone on a thread just replied to check that possibly and I turned the idle down cuz they set it high for break in
@@cameronchaos666 hmm. It could be a glow plug. But if it will idle no problems and it cuts off when on throttle it’s a tubing issue.
@@GoFastRC I forgot to mention I did install the blue idolized tuned pipe which I had to install longer tubing from tank to exhaust
@@cameronchaos666 oh yeah, your going to need to tune the bottom end. Those factory setting are for the stock pipe.
What tool do you use to measure how rich it is. I’ve never done that or used a temperature gauge
That tool was a temperature gauge. It doesn’t measure how rich the truck is, it measures the temp of the engine to know if it’s to lean or rich.
Oh ok thanks I need to get one of those. What the average and too hot for these trucks?
@@jayf2487 average is 250 Fahrenheit hot is anything 270+
Learn to tune with a proper idle gap. Traxxas engine usually likes .5-.7mm idle gap. Knowing your gap is key. All you do, knowing the gap, is adjust idle with your low speed needle. Another easier to do
Thanks for the tip!! I will have to try that when my truck gets fixed. Appreciate it!!
How much is a none running tmaxx 3.3 going for?(price wise)
It varies from place to place. You are just going to have to check eBay and places like that to see how much they are going for in your area. Thanks for the support!!
Hot day in Arkansas was 114* several yrs ago....average is 95*to 100*
Have you ever tried 20% bones brew
No I have never tried bones brew. But from what I gave heard it’s pretty good
I find the 2.5 likes to run rich at idle.
Good vid bud. I have 2 nitro cars I have a RC10 gt and a revo3.3
When you say the tune is fat what do you mean by fat / on the lean side or on the rich side
Fat setting means it’s rich
Edgar my truck is still walking should I close the low speed then reopen when I counter clockwise I believe it did it more then it will be at certain times helppppppppp 😂 please
Set it flush with the throttle coupler, and tune from there. Try bumping down ur idle and ur low as well.
At the 2:40 mark and on that’s how the new 2.5 was doing during break in
Wouldn’t it be better to lower the idle ? And not the low speed mixture.
Well I already had the idle where I liked it and I had the high speed where I liked it as well. The low speed affects how the engine idles as well as those needles.
Idle gap is to large! Close up the gap and readjust low speed screw! Mine had the linkage to long out of the box causing the idle gap to be to large.
Run bones brew 30/10. Traxxas fuel is junk. Way too much oil.
Yeah I have heard that but the fuel works really well for me. Appreciate the comment!!
Oh I also wanted to share with you this what really works great is change the carb put a losi 3.4 carburetor on the traxxas tmax 3.3 it Weill help out with that problem your having tuning
Yup!! I am planning on picking the losi 3.4 or the OS 11k carb for the revo. Appreciate the comment!

How does a bottom end go to fast ? I don’t understand
Also don’t underestimate the Traxxas Tmaxx 2.5 I should have bought that first. Instead of my 3.3 model but it alright im but 2.5. Because i like it.
Nice, I like my 2.5 as well!
You need to look at your clutch springs
Might want to consider upgrading to 30/10 from Bones Brew. Best nitro and price around $95.99 free shipping an no tax. I’ve been using it for a while and it gives all cars a slight boost in speed and better tuning range. You’ll thank me later.
Yeah it will do that but the 30% shortens the life span of the engine. So that’s why I use 20%. Thanks for the support!!🤙
@@GoFastRC I’ve never in life heard that. If anything it lengthens the life of the motor because it burns cooler keep the piston, rod, sleeve all in working order for longer. And Traxxas is also one of the worse brands of fuel. It may be readily available but try other brands over Traxxas. I love Traxxas by there fuel sucks honestly because I’ve been running nitro for a while now.
@@aonolk07 I have tried Byron and sidewinder in my 2.5 and it never ran right. But when I tried the traxxas fuel it ran right. And I didn’t change the tune at all. You may be right but from what I have seen and read from magazines it’s better to run 20% for longevity. The traxxas fuels just have like a 16% to 18% oil content so that may be why it may not work as well as others. But it is working well for me. 😃 Thanks for the support!!
@@GoFastRC where did you hear that from? nope run bones, traxxas has too much oil in it. thats why the con rod breaks
@@ronmasters7590 yeah i have read it in rc magazines and what not, so i trust thier word over people on the internet. Yeah traxxas does have a lot of oil in it but for me it ran best on traxxas. Idk why but i even tried byrons race fuel and it ran better on traxxas.
What temp should it be at
The engine should temp 220-230 but traxxas engines are fine up to 270. The traxxas engines run best at 230-240 for me. (Fahrenheit ) Hope this helps!
How long do the 2.5 engines last?
@@GoFastRC thanx will have to get a thermometer 🌡

Turn your throttle down on remote
Im thinking of upgrading to the 3.3,will i need any hardware or different parts?
I don’t think your going to need new parts but I am not 100% sure. I think it’s a direct drop in, but you might want to upgrade to a 3.3 transmission. Just because the 3.3 transmission is built to handle more power. Trust me the 3.3 is a big jump in power compared to the 2.5. Hope this helps!!
@@GoFastRC thanx. Yeah i got and extra trans that came of a 3.3 witha metal gear and slotted disc breaks.
It could be the blue rubber seal on your carbs throttle has became stiff and cannot close properly. I have a 2.5 doing the same thing. It's very old, and the carb is adjusted properly. Just likes to idle high. Try pushing the throttle in by hand, it will probably idle down
