- David Bowie performed at Live Aid in front of 72,000 people in Wembley Stadium, London on the 13th July, 1985. He was interviewed right after the show by Paul Gambaccini.
The event was organised by Sir Bob Geldof and Midge Ure to raise funds for the Ethiopian famine disaster. Broadcast across the world via one of the largest satellite link-ups of all time, the concerts were seen by around 40% of the global population.

Live aid should be in history lessons
Totally agree. I was just saying within the last week, that there should definitely be things taught about the AIDS crisis.. I myself, mostly learned about it from vh1 and other networks' retrospective tv specials, about past years in general matters &/or 80s music eras. And obviously a lot because of, -- from hearing about Freddie Mercury's struggles in the late 80s.
But if it weren't for tv, I wouldn't know much at all, about things like that. Pretty sad..
And obviously there are still some people, who still strugge with AIDS, so.. There's definitely that, too.

His facial expression at 2:45 lol
It'll never happen again.
They'll use the same format and the same idea but there won't be a David Bowie, Freddie mercury George michael on stage.
The charm about the 1985 show was how unorganised it was, yet they pulled it off. The fact that nothing had been done on that scale before, in terms of acts and broadcast range, also added to that beauty.
@@AramiMusic completely agree ,its brilliant.
Sam Riddell 💁🏾♀️ They did and it was Live 8 held in 2005 (Live Aid's 20th anniversary). You're right in that there of course was no Freddie Mercury for obvious reasons, but it appears that George Michael nor David Bowie were on the bill for this one. Pink Floyd have been dubbed the best act for this event✌🏾. ultimateclassicrock.com/live-8-bands/
You mean it will never be the same.

I see bowie I click
They did do another one in 2005, but Bowie had just had a heart attack. His last PUBLIC performance was on cbs Fashion Rocks in late 2005, but he & Alicia Keys did two Private benefits for hunger relief in 2006-and those were his his final times performing live. He & Bono were good friends, and famine relief was Bowie's main choice of cause. 💗
He originally wanted to do Loving The Alien and Fascination. Superlative heheh stevepafford.com/carsdrive/
Some great 👍 info there Alysia - thanx very much for sharing it here in the comments. Rxx
@@stevepafford5501 great comment. Didnt knew some stuff. Thanks
It wasn’t though. His last public performance was in 2007 with David Gilmour (former guitarist of Pink Floyd)
The one in 2005 it was called live 8
Apparently it was David's comment that comedians didn't have enough appeal to get people to "dish their money out" that inspired the creation of Comic Relief.
That's brilliant. I didn't know that.
love david bowie's voice
Very English 😊
@@johncarroll772 glad to hear it

Wtf lol
What a present, thank you Mr. Bowie. :)
He was so eloquent and well informed. Speaks very well.
"superlatative"
It's the actual way to pronounce it😊
And it never happened or will happen again...such a great piece of history in both regards of charity and rock music as well as for the people alive watching there or at home.
Nathan You forgot Live 8 in 2005 with McCartney, U2, A-ha, Duran Duran, Alicia Keys, Coldpaly, Maraiah Carey, Elton John, Madonna, Roxy Music, Sting, Dido, The Who and many others. It ended with the last Pink Floyd concert in their original lineup after 24 years.
Alex 080267 In all honesty for me Live 8 doesn’t compare to it’s predecessor. The atmosphere, tone and aesthetic doesn’t equate to the 1985 show. For every new addition to Live 8, a great one was missing; from (obviously Queen) Dire Straits to Status Quo, even Bowie. Not trying to say Live 8 is bad; there wasn’t as much tension (I guess) or excitement second time round. Furthermore no one really cares about Live 8, as Live Aid is a Woodstock for a new generation and it’s legacy shines on.
Then again this coming from a person who loves all kinds of rock/pop from the 60’s-80’s (of which Live Aid featured). I couldn’t care less for artists like Snoop Dog, Coldplay or The killers. So your opinion is probably correct.
I wish this happened, I wish they kept doing live aid
I do for the fact it would get loads of money but I wouldn't want it because of the lack pure talent there is now(imo).
That would’ve been amazing.
@@samriddell5982 True, Live 8 in 2005 was a bit of a bloated mess and anything equivalent these days would be absolutely awful. The really great artists these days are slightly underground with the low quality and popular stuff right at the surface - a current day Live Aid is too depressing to think about.
As an aside, the aim of such a concert in present times would have to be about helping people in the UK rather than Africa, so that tells another story about progress in the last 35 years.
@@rain_down_ couldn't have put it better myself, the problem is that we have is the fact that the most popular artists are too similar and lack creative ideas imo.
if they did, fascist governments in africa would be rich by now :)
Probably one of the interviews where Dave is the least pissed off.
Different class Bowie was he was a one off never been another one like him ever sadly missed .... Miss u
Nobody expected1 Live Aid to completey fix the problem but their hearts were there and they woke people up to the issue Bob saw the Horror and he wanted to help nobody said it was gonna wipe hunger away forever
Pressure de de ba bop
a very intelligent and eloquent man it's a shame that the money raised went into the wrong hands
God bless David Bowie and now we know how Comic Relief was conceived! Williams, Goldberg and Crystal were watching, and rose to the challenge! 🤗
