I reckon you're right about the police links to freemasonry. The black and white checks on police is called Silitoes tartan (or something similar) and its the same as the chequered floor in every masonic Lodge which represents polarity, and freemasonry is originally Scottish, hence the tartan. It does represent polarity if you think about it as its good v bad (supposedly 😂)
