Hey Uncle Tony! Good day my new friend. My father was a big MOPAR fan back from his first Imperial he bought after WWII when he got home from the USMC South PacificTheater. It was a 1938 Imperial he bought used an abused that had been in a garage, owned by a friend who never came back. Then during the 50-60’s he had a number of New Yorkers an Imperials he bought new after the family trucking business took off. The two I remember most were two he ordered special, the first was an amazing 1964 Imperial Crown Coupe lapsed with beautiful dark blue leather bucket seats with a center seat I remember sitting in! I was only 9 when we picked it up at Hurd Goldberg Chrysler Plymouth Dodge Imperial in Cumberland R. I. I remember it had Push Button Shift, a big transparent steering wheel, the best part was a 413 Wedge with a 4 brl carb with Dual Exhaust, but was absolutely the quietest car I’ve ever been in! That car was his pride an joy, at least for the next 4 years, till my third sibling was born, so now that there was 4 kids he was forced to trade his beloved Imperial in! But not for just any car! No he special ordered again at the same dealer that was owned by a Marine buddy of his. He ordered as soon as Mom knew she was expecting! He ordered a 1968 Chrysler New Yorker Town &Country Beach Wagon, in Deep Maroon with vinyl wood siding trim, a big chrome roof rack and these huge Cast Metal Chrome handles that were mounted up an down on each side of the power window over the tailgate. The interior was a beautiful Dark Red Leather, with fold down arm rest in front and back, plus a third row bench seat in matching leather gig enough for three adults! It was a true 9 passenger wagon! it was loaded with PW, A/C, AM/FM Stereo with 4 speakers. The best part, a 440 Super Commando 4 bro Dual Exhaust, plus Factory Tow Package with hitch and wired plugs and brake controllers, plus a 3:55 Trac Loc rear differential, for the family boat and Travel Trailer that was a 28’ Airstream. That was the first car I ever drove legally on the road. Plus my Dad gave it to me when I gotHonorably Discharged from Uncle Adams Misguided Children in 1976, that I drove daily till I got on my feet. I have to tell you that car might not have been very quick, but on the highway? Look out! The speedo was just like any MOPAR that year, a horizontal affair that went from 0-120, then a small bar between that and a clock, for than twice I had that car going soo fast the needle was not only buried! I went all the way over to THREE O’ Clock!! I hit you not! The engine was screaming and the doors seemed like they were going to be sucked off! I was once stopped while on leave by a Rhode Island State Trooper, that was actually one of the great ones! I just had a fight with my long time girl friend and was P o’D and hit the on ramp and floored it, I was on the far side or third gear as I came over the slight hill right by his Radar Gun!!?? I knew I was screwed, I though I was gonna go to Jail! But I pulled right over after I seen his Gum-ball light up, I had my license and registration ready, plus my USMC leave papers, well he asked me what my Unit was an where I had been, plus why in the hell I was going so fast, a speed he thought no one would believe! He then told me he had just came out of the SP Academy after a three year hitch with the USMC himself!!! He yelled at me for driving like a fool in what I told him was my Dads car and what kind of trouble I would be in if he arrested me, then gave me a stern warning, verbal warning cause he could not write down I was clocked at 131 mph!!!! In a 8 year old Chrysler Wagon!!!!

Chrysler engines were and are the best engines made. The Hemi was not only powerful but it was reliable especially considering the complexity of the heads. The slant six was indestructible and the 318 ran forever but for performance engines it's hard to beat a 340, 383, 440 and of course the Hemi.

Yep the late blocks had many durability improvements cast in. They'll all survive to 600hp no probs but after that smog blocks are better - in fact the smog blocks are just better. Best to keep your numbers matching earlier block under the bench. The Mopar hot rodding manuals mention the 600hp number too. Nick's garage had an early one crack on the dyno in the exact place the factory put a stiffening rib in the smog blocks. It made ~ 600hp so I guess the folk at Mopar knew the the worst castings were still reliable to a quite high 600hp (its the torque that does it at any rate but I'm splitting hairs lol).
Also contrary to popular belief the smog heads outflow the 915 & 906. Don't believe me?
Well for your viewing pleasure here are 4 articles (links below) by no less than Steve Dulcich that forensically examines the flow charcacteristics and the effect of mods. It is an in depth analysis and is fascinating. Of course you wouldn't do that nowadays because aluminum heads with big valves, closed chambers and every single mod known to work on BB Mopar heads are available off the shelf for half the labour cost and nearly half the bloody weight of modding effing iron smog heads and they flow about 20-35%++ more than the most heavily modded oem heads!
I like Stage VI heads; they flow 350cfm stock and have raised ports so on a low deck a stock RB intake bolts right on and the exhaust ports are in the same location.
I digress, here are those articles I mentioned:

500hp has been a rule for reliability. We did a n/a wedge motor that I don't believe had 600hp and did everything that can be done to a low casting number block but it split I think within a year. (Street car by the way) Next was total remachine of megablock then pushing it to over 800 on the dyno, n/a again, no problem of course as they're supposed to be good for 3500hp. Point: I just don't trust mopar production blocks for more than 500 no matter what you do to it. It's the cross section of the block that's not strong enough, ripsitself apart.
