Obviously the two men on guitars are legends in jazz. But that drummer!! Those skins were begging for mercy after the pounding he gave them. Just an outstanding performance.
These two bring out the best in each other, such a great album they did together. This is a smoking performance! I've seen Lee a few times, really a fun guy and an incredible talent. Larry's work with Steely Dan, so tasty.
Larry's right hand has always blown me away! He gets so many amazing tones, attacks, dynamics, with such smoothness and effortlessness! Fun to listen to, hard to imitate! Yes!
UNREAL,,, WHAT A GREAT VERSION OF "L.A. UNDERGROUND"!!! I'M ALWAYS AMAZED AT LARRY CARLTON! LEE IS SUPERB TOO,, THANK GOD FOR REAL TALENT! IF ONLY THE YOUNG PEOPLE WOULD LISTEN TO THIS STUFF AND KNOW WHAT'S TRULY GOOD MUSIC!
The most significant musicians in my whole lifetime!! Saw them both many times both friends!! As a guitarist myself they influenced me since the 70s!!!
Every time I hear this song, i can't help remarking about the drummer,,, wow!!! Excellent song all around,,, so fresh and exciting, great composition!!!
Hi ! In this video, we can compare Lee Ritenour's style and Larry Carlton's one. I've' always prefered Lee Ritenour's style, but that engages just myself ; in fact, I like both, they are really great guitarists. BYE !
@geetarnut I totally understand your point, but I would have never fully appreciated this when I was younger. This is 100% good taste man, in every single note they play.
Finally got the chords together and lead..20 years later got this music arrangement in by Larry Carlton down padded 😊 I dedicate this song " Smile and Smiles To Go " to my Lovely wife +Karel passed away this year August 13, 2024...I'll jammin' soon at Seahawk Cocktail Lounge, 4103 Candlewood Street, Lakewood, Ca...Jammin' with Mikal Keyboardist ...October 26, 2024, Saturday 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm....
Fantastic live version of a great studio jam between two top notch guitarists. Lee plays a jazz style guitar, hence the smoother sounding notes. Larry has a more jazz/rock style, kind of like Al DiMeola.
@gerraywest I agree with you except to add that each of these superb musicians & guitarists are EQUALLY adept at what they do and at times can mimic each other due to there experience in the music world . Each are Chameleons as they are BOTH ... STYLISTS .... and have a deep understanding of what to play as well as what NOT to play in any given circumstance . And yet both are of the same coin . It matters not who is on the front or the back. Incredible muscians . Period.
Lee the more jazzier of the two influenced by Wes Montgomery. No doubt that Larry’s lead work was spectacular jazz rock fusion playing. He is something else.
Larry Carlton, Lee Ritenour, Rick Jackson (keys,) Melvin Davis (bass,) and Land Richards (drums.) you would be hard pressed to find 5 more talented musicians! Studio musicians can literally play anything, but not may can play like this. Simply sublime. I've made some efforts to find this performance on CD or DVD and it's no longer produced. We should be thankful we have this video. Thanks for posting!!!!!!!!!!
Que dúo tan genial de guitarristas!! ... y el baterista es de primera línea, también un tipo genial .. el sostenido que se manda es único! ... la música de mi vida es el jazz!! - saludos desde - LIMA-PERU
i might be wrong but on this take they have less grrove than the album version or even the gig they had in Japan one year earlier... Still it's good to hear 'em play that tune : i love it.
well that was pretty hot! Still Lee looks like the nerdy sort of character you see in the Simpsons or Family, BUT farq me he can play that guitar so he has my admiration. As for LC, just looks odd without a trusty 335 and that LP looks small on him, but again he sure can play (as always :-) ). Great tune and thanks for posting
Oh man, the smile on the drummer face says it all.
Obviously the two men on guitars are legends in jazz. But that drummer!! Those skins were begging for mercy after the pounding he gave them. Just an outstanding performance.
That is one cool groove and his fills are awesome!
I believe that's Land Richards, I saw him with Hiroshima a couple years ago and he was fantastic.
@@GuitarAddict69 tis Land for sure. Cat is awesome
What a happy jazzy tune. I'm going to play this during my last night just before I retire from working. What a good way to say "see ya"
Larry Carlton's tone is THE ULTIMATE TONE! amazing! Both A1 guitar players!
I was there, it was a spectacular weekend the weather was PERFECT !
Lucky you!
These two bring out the best in each other, such a great album they did together. This is a smoking performance! I've seen Lee a few times, really a fun guy and an incredible talent. Larry's work with Steely Dan, so tasty.

Two great guitarist with a gift to blow your mind

Two of the BEST guitarist in the world !
Larry's right hand has always blown me away! He gets so many amazing tones, attacks, dynamics, with such smoothness and effortlessness! Fun to listen to, hard to imitate! Yes!
you smart. yes it is about the picking hand. bravo...
The drummer is a beast!
This tune makes me happy!
The most significant musicians in my whole lifetime!! Saw them both many times both friends!! As a guitarist myself they influenced me since the 70s!!!
Had the pleasure to see Lee at Disney world. I had no idea what a treat I was in for.
I met Lee in an airport once-really nice humble guy.
The drum part is awesome. What a sound ..
Every time I hear this song, i can't help remarking about the drummer,,, wow!!! Excellent song all around,,, so fresh and exciting, great composition!!!

Lee the more jazzier of the two influenced by Wes Montgomery. No doubt that Larry’s lead work was spectacular jazz rock fusion playing. He is something else.
