I love using my belt pouch for mushroom hunting. But I didn't wax it, I want the mushroom spores to spill through the canvas as I walk through the woods. Another tip for evening out the wax as it hardens, a hair dryer works great! And let's face it, every shop needs an iron and hair dryer.
One helpful tip if you want tighter weaves on these drop clothes is to wash and dry them on hot. Causes the cotton to shrink. Just be aware you might loose 6 inches on side. We found this out after washing a tent we made for my daughter.
In the marine corps we had somethin very similar called a drop pouch and usually put it on our off side (your non shooting hand) to hold empty magazines and similar items while you were in the field and it also rolled up and out of the way as well

If you want to maximize the flopitude of the canvas after you wax it go at it after with a heat gun. Just clip it up to an edge and let the wax drip down and off the bottom. The fabric will keep just enough in the fibers to waterproof it and keep it more flexible. There’s an inverse relationship between how flexible it is and how durable it will be, but I make fabric flags and signs and melting off all the wax I can with the heat gun let’s then still wave in the wind without the design I put on running off in the rain! Sick bag too, definitely going to make a few of these for LARPs and cons, stylish and handy!
A year late but… haven’t searched all comments so don’t know if this was suggested: stick tape to the arm? of the sewing machine to act as a straight line to guide the sewing. Also, while I enjoy the music, I had trouble hearing you because it wasn’t as ‘background’ as it could have been. I’m currently binging your videos; great content! 💙🇦🇺
since you deal with wax on clothes so much, I would reccomend getting a snowboard/ski wax iron. Swix makes some cheap ones that work. they dont have holes for steam and are just a flat iron that do really well with wax and no clogging!
I tried waxing canvas a month ago and now I’ve waxed everything but my legs. It’s so much fun, especially when you hit it with a hair dryer to soak in. Super satisfying 😌 Thanks for sharing!
Just made one a week ago for foraging edibles in the forest. I made my bag removable with snaps so that when you fill one you can remove it and attach another and keep foraging.
This is a very cool build, I think I might make one for myself. Just an aside, you can also use paper towel to get the extra wax off a section of cloth. Lay down some paper towel, then the fabric on top then another layer of paper towel, THEN use the iron to heat up the cloth again. The extra wax goes into the paper towel and no matter how much you iron plenty of wax stays behind.
To sew straight lines you can install a guide or fence to butt the work up against. Since the machine is steel a strong magnet with a straight edge would work or clamp a block of material to the sewing bed.
I build them bags for foraging mushrooms, edible plants, and medicinal herbs. I have a bunch of heavy canvas I bought when one of the chain fabric stores closed. I use beeswax, you can add iron oxide and make it tinned canvas which also turns it a nice rusty color. Most of my canvas is earth tones though. There are also products like fabric ease that keeps fraying to a minimum. I also pleat the sides and bottom so when the bag is open it's rather rectangular. I use leather lacing for the drawstring. Hand carved mushroom made from antler toggle completes it. Another material ya may wanna try working with is rawhide. It is so neat when wetforming then dries completely hard.
I made one, mostly following your steps. I use it to pick up the ejected plastic shells when I’m shooting clays. Having an open pouch lets me pick up the area easily and keep it clean as I go. Great idea.
You can use the plain waxed fabric as pot-covers or wraps for food, like cling film/cling wrap, not just at LARP, as an eco-friendly alternative. Just wipe it down every so often.
I just upgraded from regular tabletop RPG player to full on LARPing and this channel.is a gold mine! I have used so many ideas already and I know many more are to come. Keep up the excellent job!
Your enthusiasm always makes me want to stop what I'm doing and get my tools. ❤I did it yesterday. I watched the collapsible wax bag video when I realized I have everything I need in my workshop. I set it up in an afternoon. Thank you for getting me off the couch ❤
After watching this I'm totally planning on making one for my geology trips, looks like it should stand up to sample collection pretty well. Possibly I'll make a second one for LARPing... Great video!
You tend to make my day with your videos y'all's channel is one of the best channels I can confidently say is one of the best channels I watch and I watch alot of RUclips
How does this type of waxed fabric hold up in warmer weather? Would it survive Texas summer heat without getting gooey or messy? I've seen other waxing compounds that incorporate linseed oil and/or turpentine. Have you tried any of those methods to compare with using purely wax?
I think just look up the melting point of waxes, at least around 160 F and above should hold up. Or you could melt down some silicone instead of wax. Plenty of vids about waterproofing using silicone.
We use this in the military. We call it a dump pouch. It's where old mags go. I keep my Skittles in mine though. Now I want to make a canvas and leather MOLLE plate carrier lol
That is a really good project, but not for a larp. They didn't have snaps in those days. You would use buckles, straps, and ties or possible toggles, but not snaps.
I just got a bolt of canvas from a coworker. (He was remodeling his house and it was leftover ) and I wasn’t sure what to do with it. So I stumbled across this at a perfect time
There should be two snaps on the bag so when you cinch it closed you can snap the top panel on it to keep anything from falling out the little opening at the top... 😁👍
Just found your channel today and love your enthusiasm, wit and content. First video I watched was building a bow. I’m sure it’s only me but I’m having difficulty concentrating because the music isn’t background it’s foreground in this one. Just me I know, it sucks to have such excellent hearing.
this is the finest example of a waxed bag. your skills at sewing and leather work is supreme, i love your sewing machine . i could use a bag exactly like yours for all my possibles . fair thee well. vilhelm
Discvered the channel and going thru the past episodes, glad i stumbled in. Anyway, Would marking your stich line help with keeping your stitches straight? Also, I retreated my oilskin coat with mix of beeswax and linseed oil plus a bit of turpentine to help it dry and a couple of ounces of food grade orange oil. The mix worked great, and I found its also good on leather and wood.
Love it, that would come in very handy on a hiking trip, maybe incorporate if a Ferro rod or flint and steel for the fire starting aspect of this build.
For sure! Tho, fun story, I actually have some plans in the future for some BIG waxed canvas projects. As such, the iron shown has be relegated to being my "wax iron" and I bought a nice new one for everything else.
interesting tip the canvas being waxed atuly makes it fire resistant as in while it will catch at the same rate as the non waxed cloth it will not burn as fast so you have more time to put it out before it gets more dangerous
WOW AGAIN LOVE THIS AND IS USEFUL FOR EVEN NOW. WITH ALL WE CARRY, THAT IS ONE NICE BAG LOVE IT...!!! THE SEWING METHOD IS THE SAME I DO FOR WAND POUCHES WITH FLAPS...!
Great video! Is this the final evolution of the bag of holding idea you have mentioned in the live chats? It looks like you could add a pair of snaps to the front of the canvas bag as well so that you can close the flap over the opening when the bag is in the unfolded position. Would that work?
To remove excess wax. Place a clean piece of cloth on top and use the hot iron. The excess wax will wick to the clean cloth leaving the waxed cloth better more evenly sealed but softer and flexible.
I can put that on my tool belt to hold nails or whatever at work. Could also melt down some silicone instead of wax to make it water proof. Not sure which one is more water proof and will last longer but I have a feeling silicone is better for both.
I wondered how they made waxed canvas. Neat! But when you iron it to melt the white wax that didn't soak into the fabric, I personally wouldn't put my iron directly down onto the wax. I don't want to end up with wax on anything else I iron. (I can envision destroyed clothing or other projects -- especially something that can't just be thrown in the wash) I'd use parchment paper (for cooking) between the iron and the fabric at that stage. Or, you could buy an iron just for that.
Hey if you ever try to use it to carry water in it being waxed like that you should make a nice little water carrier to really good video dude and I love the creativity that you have
I think I would like to be able to take the pouch off my belt without taking my belt off me. When I copy your idea I will have to modify it slightly for that to happen.
Hey! Love the channel. Just wanted to say I almost didnt watch this video because with the title and small thumbnail on my phone, I thought this was for like a standard reusable shopping bag. Maybe say "waxed canvas belt pouch" or something to that effect. That would catch more of my attention at least. Anyways, sorry for the unsolicited advice and keep the videos coming! I love what you're doing!

Preach! Both get a TON of use.
YES THEY DO
I actually found a hair dryer to be insufficient, mine is kinda wimpy, a heat gun on the other hand, worked like a dream
When I was little I used a mesh bag so that the spores fell while I walked through the place. I think that it could be more effective than canvas
One helpful tip if you want tighter weaves on these drop clothes is to wash and dry them on hot.
Causes the cotton to shrink. Just be aware you might loose 6 inches on side. We found this out after washing a tent we made for my daughter.
Good advice. It really tightens up the weave *and* it takes all the sizing out of the canvas. Without the sizing, it will take the wax better.
In the marine corps we had somethin very similar called a drop pouch and usually put it on our off side (your non shooting hand) to hold empty magazines and similar items while you were in the field and it also rolled up and out of the way as well
I'm glad someone else recognized this as a LARP dump pouch. Haley Strategic would probably try to sell these things for like $300.

The modern day variant of that is called a dump pouch and is a fairly common part of military kit to store spent mags.

Thats called a foraging pouch! They're used a lot on orchards when hand picking fruits. I love mine personally : )

Also if you don't want a bag, you can use the waxed cloth to cover jars or cups with food that you don't want bugs getting into.

Have you looked at adding boiled linseed oil to the wax mix? Adds some flex to the wax.
