I’m a process operator at an oil refinery and I just want to say you do NOT need a degree to get a job. I never even knew what a process operator was until I heard about the aptitude test they were giving and went to test. I passed test, killed the interview and got hired. Many of the operators I know don’t have any type of degree related to the field. I know I got lucky because there were many applicants but I just don’t want people to think that it’s mandatory to have the degree and not even try. Good luck to all.

Just got hired in a oil refinery in the same situation. I am nervous due to knowing nothing about the field and have one month before the start date, what should i study studying this month please?
I got lucky and was hired by Dow Chemical a few years back, eventually they shut down that plant but that experience I gained got me a great job as a Reactor Operator, making twice what my friends do. The industry isn't demanding on your body and the fellow people you work with are in my experience pretty great because of the lives these type of jobs afford them.

Bullcrap. Anyone can get a job with the right attitude. I got my job as an automation tech right out of college. I literally walked into the place, impressed the engineer and walked out with a handsome salary for someone whose only 22....

Im sure he's around that. The plant techs i know at the power plant start around the same 34-36 an hour. Top out at 45 after some time

Don't do it stay in school....chemical operator jobs suck....I do it and hate it.!!! Let's just say that specialty chemical operator jobs suck. Maybe if your working in a refinery like this video depicts its probably not bad at all. But working with reactors where you have to charge raw material to them sometimes hundreds of 50 pound bags and then vacuum charge liquid out of drums during the summer months really sucks. Working in a refinery though where it's a continuous process, and you make your rounds and take readings, maybe pull a sample....that's not bad at all.

A job in process operations recommends a college degree, but it’s not mandatory, usually with 2-5 years - any refinery is going to hire you with the experience.

Imagine having a 4 year degree in Agriculture making $40k a year with $50k in student loans. While working for the state as an inspector for 6 years... I'm wondering would my experience and AG degree help me excel in this position
Being born and raised in the port Arthur area this is everyday stuff to me, get a 2 year degree make 100K plus, however it's gotten to where you have to know someone. Not a job everywhere either, it's pretty specific to the gulf coast area.....nowhere else can a 2 year degree bring in 100-250K a year. Crazy

Dallas Stanley uh try Odessa and Midland, and then come to me again with this false post. Plus this degree is used mainly in the oil and gas industry which pays a lot! Obviously you can’t compare a 2 year industrial tech or instrumentation degree with another 2 year degree. Common Sense

Last year $238k as a senior operations technician.
I have the process technician degree and it pays well not 90k well but better than most 4 year degree jobs
I can wait for my chance and I pray that I fit very nicely into the role of a process operator .

Funny I have had a process operations degree for almost a year and can't find a job. I've applied from Louisiana up to Arkansas and to Alabama. Currently working at a chemical plant with a contractor but the money is not near as good as it should be if working for the actual company and not a third party.

This might be my next career. I currently operate refinery machines but I turn raw material into chocolate not plastic or gas. I currently make 27.96 an hour but I’m planning on staying for 5 more years until I Pay off my truck. By then I’ll probably be at 32 or 33 an hour but the refinery’s around my job are now starting at 36-41-47 an hour and with a pension at some of them which is hard to ignore.
Just start applying now especially if youre willing to move you might get hired quick
If I had a kid that sucked in high school and lacked any kind of dreams on what they wanted to do I would tell them to get into this field.

Just saw an online application not long ago and it’s serious the starting with no experience was $25/hr and at qualified confirmation it was at $42/hr

They are called process tech, process operators, chemical operators, lokk for them, this like most news is just bullshit i recently graduated from houston CC with this degree it is very competitive and your chances of landing a job are just as good as mine, i currently knownonly 5 people doing this 2 of which are only interns not full time

not really I have the process operator degree and work with chemical engineers and I am miles ahead of them in this kind of work.

They all want experience. School doesn't hurt though. Ethanol is the easiest to get into, although the pay is very shitty compared to power plants and process plants.

I'm a processoperator with pharma speciale in novo nordisk in Denmark. I mass produce insulines. the paycheck is like winning a lottery every 4 weeks some people never even win once in theire life time ^^ processoperator is for sure the best thing i ever did for myself. Money isnt or will never be a problem, making above 3 times what a policeman earns here in dk, almost feels too dirty ^^

What does that equate to in dollars? Just curious.
I'm a truck driver who frequently goes to these plants and it's not uncommon to hear of these plant operators making well over $100k.

Christian Hernandez Depends on the plant. Many don't require a degree. You just take a written test, do an interview, and some other basic stuff. But truthfully, your chances of getting hired are increased if you know someone working there already. That's how a lot of people get in. Of course you have to graduate high school and have a super clean criminal record.
Mate weeks course getting your cn ticket for a crane get a job as a reach stacker operator that picks up containers and I made 120k plus’s last year

Join the service. I did liquid fuels maintenance in the Air Force after which helped get my foot in the door at Texaco years ago. Otherwise you’ll probably have to know someone on the inside or just be lucky.

Not needed. The highest level of math is only college algebra and that's the highest. Usually contemporary math is fine. I know at Lamar institute of technology you don't need higher math to get the degree

thats correct, its called a process technology degree, not all colleges offer it cause its relevant to the oil indsutry. lit.edu has the degree listed on their website
Basic education is all you need to be a process operator.Unless you want to be an engineer.Running a plant isn't really that difficult, it just needs common sense

It basically boils down to "Do you want sweaty quackish" on a daily basis. Now quackish is portuquese slang for underwear. That's the difference between the engineer and the operator. One sweats and one doesn't.

"short of filling job"s i went to exxon phase 2 test they told use 10000 people applied at phase 3 all of use had the process tech degree but no job experience or relative few experience only a couple had years experience, about 12 of my buddies that graduated with me from Houston CC only54 where offered 2 of those were interships only
