I was a step mum , its not the easiest job in the world and I think it is lovely that you said those nice things about your step mum. If my step kids had said something like that about me I would have been over the moon. I bet she is very proud of you. 😀

I was a very damaged young boy. I didn't have stability and I didn't know what was going on. My world was upside down and I couldn't make sense of anything. I can see now how difficult it might have been for her. I remember actually a time when she came to my school and gave me a Cadburys chocolate bar. It was so unusual to me at the time, but I know now that she was just trying to build a relationship.

I make this quite often, and the whole family enjoy it. I use any leftovers to make little pies the next day, and they always taste fantastic. My son who never cooks, has started to use the leftover mince to make toasted sandwiches for his lunch the next day. Its basic, healthy cooking.

Savoury mince is superb British comfort food, and you have done it great justice here Adam. I totally agree with you on the Soapbox section. Negative people like those are neither use nor ornament, more to be pitied than blamed. Shared, like good food should be 😋👍🌟

Cheers Pete. It just irritated me that just because it's not got 400 ingredients and isn't pretty looking that somehow it's not good food. A generation was brought up on good home cooked healthy food like this.

Corned Beef Hash also doesn't looks good, but it tasts just fantastic. I like it most with pickled gurkens or Beet Red, here in Germany sweet and sour. It's comfort food at it's best.

    Keep on your soapbox m8y.
We all start out somewhere in the kitchen.
As a single bloke I batch cook a lot, but I do love to return to the British basics.
This dish lends itself to a pie, cobbler, cottage pie, carrots and mustard/cheesy mash.
Keep up the good work, Times are hard and cooking is a real skill to have.

First of all, british food isn't bad, it's delicous. I love it most! All the Pork Pies, cottage Pie, Beefstew and Dumplings, Scotch Eggs, Apple Pie and Custard etc, etc. It's simple and real food without Chichi. That is why i like so much your way of cooking. And you always keep an eye on the costs. Comfort food does not have to be expensive, you proof it in your recipes. Go forward with your Channel, it's brilliant. Warmest regards from Germany!

This is not meant to be an emotional post but one of a long search to perfection. My mum, who passed many years ago, made the perfect minced beef. We had it with mashed potatoes peas and maybe carrots. And the leftovers next day, she turned it into a curry and rice. I’ve never been able to replicate her recipe for the mince, but to be honest, I haven’t tried enough. Her final result for the mince recipe was very dark in colour, I think she must of used beef oxo cubes, and the consistency was slightly thick. Your video had lots of good tips that gave me ideas I can work on. Thank you.

You'll probably find that your Mum cooked the mince a lot longer than today's recipes tell you to. My mom and I always have people commenting on how tender and dark the mince is and we couldn't understand it, until we realised that we cooked our mince for a much longer period of time. The secret is to make sure that you almost *_oversear_* the mince before adding the liquid and allowing to slow cook on a simmer for a long time. I could go into a lot more detail, but that's the gist of it...
      Hopefully this answers your question...

Hi Adam, we all love comfort food no matter where we come from. For my family it was meatloaf, mashed potatoes and peas. I will be making this for my husband and I soon after Christmas and let you know how it turns out. It looks delicious. Have a Merry Happy Christmas from across the pond. We are having a mild winter so far here in Chicago.

Hi Adam, greetings from Sydney, Australia, and it's great to see you back! My Mum used to make savoury mince for us every now and then, and I don't remember her ever putting peas in. However, having said that, we didn't usually have potatoes with it either: in Australia, we mostly eat it on toast. I've made a couple of different Aussie versions of this, (one of which *DOES* actually include peas), and you're quite right: it's tasty, filling and very comforting. Stay safe and well, Adam. I'm sorry to hear about your recent problems, and I sincerely hope that you're recovering well. Best wishes from Australia, mate!

Thank you for this lovely recipe it brings me back amazing memories with my grandmother. Now I am from Caribbean descent and I love spicy well season food. I was brought up on both British food and Caribbean and I would like to say I love and appreciate both. I make this dish for my children and I add Beef suet dumplings. I then serve it with some British roast potatoes. Only ignorant idiots will comment that this food is not seasoned. This dish is beautifully seasoned with salt pepper mixed herbs and all the lovely flavoured veg that you add to it. If food from every country taste the same then food would be very boring. I appreciate food from all walks of life and I fully appreciate that I can feed myself and my family.
( I forgot to say my grandmother was a white beautiful British lady)

Good food doesn't know any borders. My aunt made this dish very often with minced Pork, because it's cheaper here in Germany than minced Beef, in a savory sauce. We had it with boiled potatoes, which we kneaded in the sauce. As sidedish we had cucumber salad with sour cream dressing. Omg memories can be so mouthwatering😋😀

I love this video and plan to make this ASAP. I enjoyed your soapbox as I’m a Yank who has come to an appreciation of British food from watching home cooks on YT. The first time I made bangers and mash with onion gravy(thank you for the recipe and video) I was happy and my husband was in heaven. So who’s to say British food is not good?? That is like judging American food on Jello and Spam! (Both of which have their place anyway, food snobs be daXXed.) So thank you for your lovely videos and encouragement of us home cooks who just get dinner on the table for our families every night. Love your channel. Be well, dear Adam. 💜😍🥰😽😘😘😘

I think a lot of the stigma came from the end of the second world war when rationing was still around into the 50s. Then came the awful 70s convenience boom, and the world just assumed that's what the food is like. We still make rubbish food just like anyone else. I mean take any petrol station or supermarket scotch egg and pitch it against a home made one fresh out of the fryer and they are completely different. Our food is good, and it's a hill I will die on mate.

Hi Adam: I really enjoyed this video and find it terrible that the person you spoke about was so negative. In fact, I have become quite fascinated by recipes for Savoury Mince recently as being originally from the states (and despite having lived here for 40 years) I have never cooked it before. Your recipe has pleased me the most and I will definitely follow it - comfort food is a luxury to me and we all need it from time to time - if not everyday!!! .... especially these days when the whole world seems to have gone mad.

It might be good to check out how she's doing now.
This was a great video, I love this and haven't had it in years. I plan on making it and have found a recipe that sounds solid, but naturally, I needed to double-check to see if you had a recipe- and you did.

I am so glad you stood up to the bully who tried to shame the person who made, and was proud of her effort, the dish you just made. Even though I make, and sometimes succeed, complicated dishes from scratch (like the ramen last weekend--noodles and all), simple and quick dishes like your savoury mince is still a welcome comfort. Thanks Adam, and I enjoy your comments on other channels we both watch! Oh, and the sound was ok, but not great. The video was really good and I particularly liked the out-of-focus effect when you were in the background. It takes a while to build up good video and audio chops, so just keep at it. I think Steve Cusato from "Not Another Cooking Show" has a bit of a tutorial on the process. His food content is stellar, too.

Aww, childhood Memories. A similar version called "Gehacktesstippe" (meaning roughly minced meat in thick gravy) is/was a popular dish in eastern germany, albeit its eaten without peas and with pickles as a side. Nowadays i coincidently make an an almost identical dish to yours, but i also ad carrots and eat it over rice. Simple, but great

Hi Adam, as you know I only came to your channel fairly recently, so I was saddened to hear of your troubles last year. Glad to see you are doing great now. This is just the sort of food I grew up with, my mother was a good, basic, cook. Truthfully I sometimes find it harder to recreate these simple dishes then it is to make say a curry from scratch. This looks totally yummy. I so agree with you about the Twitter incident. People are only too happy to trash others when they have no idea of their circumstances and how they arrived in the place where they are. Keep smiling x

We all have good and bad times. I slipped in the bathroom at night and broke hip 3x, shoulder and all toes. Worst was that they only found me 14 days later. No food, water nor blanket. But it all heals quite fast and I don't fear to be on my own again in 2 weeks. Hospitals and clinics are not places where I like to be : zombies🙈.

@ Adam Garratt : a lot of time to think about favourite dishes😃 Am from the Netherlands but grew up in Portugal (chicken piri piri 🌶, fish and seafood). From the age of eleven in Switzerland, then moved to California on my own when I was 18. Later Italy, France, UK, Germany and my favourite : Cape Town. Currently back in Europe but hard to find a job over 40 years of age. Bet in England too. Keep on cooking your great meals and enjoy them🍀
