    I've got the 200-500mm for Nikon and it's a lot of fun to shoot with such a lens. Although it might not be suited well for urban and street photography because of its size and weight. With these kind of lenses you're also the eyecatcher of everyone who's around you. If I'm outside with this lens, almost everytime there's someone asking me something or passing a comment on the lens. But I really like my 200-500mm Nikkor for bird photography or outdoor sports at bright and sunny days.

    How did you expose for the moonrise? When I tried to shoot the supermoon on the beach I had to under expose the foreground several stops to get good detail in the moon itself.

    • @joeallam
      @joeallam  2 года назад +2

      Yep, the whole scene was underexposed to get the moon detail. As you can see in some of the video clips, it's still quite a bit brighter outside than the photos show. The moon was also moving at quite a pace across the sky, which would be a hinderance to long-exposures without doing a composite. It's very tricky indeed - especially without a tripod!

    • @thexsickness
      @thexsickness 2 года назад

      @@joeallam so this wasn't any kind of hdr merge, simply under exposing and pulling the blacks and shadows up in post?

    • @Kit2Canada
      @Kit2Canada 2 года назад +2

      Antar, this is the conundrum of photography. Take for example a photo of two people one wearing white, and one black - who would you meter for ?
      The answer is neither. You’d need a 18% grey card on incendient light meter for the “correct exposure” because all light meters expose for the mid-tone.
      That all said, If the “film” can’t cope with the exposure you’d need to bracket the exposure and either dodge and burn to correct the exposure or use HDR software (carefully or it would like it).
      For those of you now incensed I’d dare to manipulate an image in the digital-darkroom, take a look a Ansel Adams “Moonrise over Hernandez”.
      If he can do it, I can do it.

  • @vincentkeith5259

    Nice - simple, strong compositions. The individuals and pairs of buildings or tight clusters hit the strongest. You've got some really beautiful cityscapes. Well done.
    Weather is always a matter of luck, what you do with it is, more often, a matter of skill.
    Luck is useful. It also makes being a pro landscape photographer (which I'm not anymore) hard. Everyone has a camera, and everyone can get lucky (right place, right time, the software actually works). I can't remember how many times I've heard people say, "Yeah, well, I could do that." or "I've got a shot like that." And, of course, they could or they do. It just took a bit of luck. The fact that I went back to that spot dozens of times at all hours, sometimes waiting hours for shadows to move, or clouds to change position, or... None of that matters, it's just that one time. I can't think of another art form that allows an untrained person to create a "masterpiece" (unless you're talking about abstract painting - which I don't).

    Do you find yourself having to crank ISO very high for most shots during blue hour? Very tempted but not sure if I should get this lens or a Nikon D810 and a Sigma 150-600…and have change leftover!

    • @joeallam
      @joeallam  2 года назад +1

      Max iso I went to was 6400 I think. The difficulty is that a brighter exposure actually overexposes the moon significantly, so it's not necessarily about getting it brighter, but more about getting the lens more stable for sharper buildings etc. I actually had to underexpose the whole scene in order to capture the moon correctly. If I did a long-exposure to get a clean city view, the moon would be too bright and also blurry because it was moving too fast. In hindsight, it's actually a trickier scenario than I realised, so I wish I'd spoken a bit more about my initial intentions compared to the end result at the time I filmed it. There's always next time!

    • @chrisjames1924
      @chrisjames1924 2 года назад

      @@joeallam Definitely a tricky shot, especially if foreground features are fairly close. I guess you could do separate exposures and blend in post. Or is that cheating? Could even add ET and Elliot on their BMX.

    • @joeallam
      @joeallam  2 года назад

      I'm unsure if I'd want to buy a superzoom to be honest. I do enjoy the results, but the size of the lens is a real hurdle and can only be useful in the evening/night when paired with a tripod/monopod, which adds even more bulk. Given that most of my photography is travel related, it's a really hard decision to take it or not. Thought of you when mentioning Jakarta - will definitely say on the channel if I make any plans!
