Whilst in the North of England, celebrating a friend's birthday, I met up with Thomas Heaton to go and take some landscape photography in the Yorkshire Dales.
As you know, my main area of photography these days is urban and street photography. What you probably don't know, is that my first entry point into photography, 16 years ago, was actually landscape photography! It's something I don't really practice too often anymore, so I definitely felt out of my comfort zone on this particular day.
Luckily, Thomas Heaton is a fantastic photographer and has an excellent RUclips channel all about landscape photography, so I felt in safe hands following him around his metaphoric backyard.
This vlog's a fun day out and captures what it's like travelling in a custom photography 4x4 Mitsubishi Delica, to some picturesque areas of the north of England - enjoy!

Coool video, man. You got some great images. My film is awaiting the scanner and I can't remember half of what I shot. Nice to finally shoot together 👍👍
Cheers man, and thanks for taking me around for the day - looking forward to seeing what images you got too! We should definitely do it again some time!
Can we expect a vlog from you on this outing? Thought I saw your X-T4 doing a bit of vloggage. Love your film videos... hoping to get a 6x6 TLR this year or next. Your vid tonight was brilliant as well.
Excited to see what you got on film, hopefully we get to see more videos together..
@@joeallam nice vid Jo. We need a part two! Flip it around and invite Thomas to London for some urban photography! 😄
#ComfortZones
@@ItsBlasFamous It has been a few years since Thomas shot some street photos! I think it was some kind of 24h challenge he went or something like that :D
I’ve never liked a video so fast in my whole life. 2 legends
Haha! Appreciated 🙌
Two of my favorite photographer / youtubers. Love this :D
Ah, thanks! Feels like it’s been a long time coming, but fun to go out and shoot together finally!
This was unexpected but very cool to watch!
Next time you can bring Thomas to do some street photography 😀
Glad you enjoyed it! I think it'll take a lot of persuasion to get Tom to do some street photography, so I may need some help in _his_ comments 😏
Yes!! Had been hoping this collab would happen!
Cheers! It’s taken about 7 years for us to be in the same place at the same time, but here we are haha!
So cool you guys got together to do this. 🥰 Makes me very happy.
Thanks Tesal! Even though I was out of my comfort zone, I thoroughly enjoyed the day!
21:35, "I thought you were shooting black and white" haha that cracked me up
Ever since I saw your story about being out with Tom, I have been very excited to see if you would post a video with him. Could not be happier and amazing photos as well!
Ah brilliant - glad you enjoyed it! Thanks
This was the collab I didn’t know I needed
Two of my favorites photographers collaborate to create content together! This is surreal for me! 👍
It's always nice when my favorite photographers get together. It's nice seeing the contrasting styles at work. I enjoyed this veryt much.
Great collab! Thanks guys!
What, this is great! I had no idea you two knew each other. I love when photographers, especially from different genres, get together and hang out. This was wonderful.
Yeah, we'd been chatting since the very early days about 6 years ago, when we both had less than 10k subscribers. I'm glad we finally got to go shoot together!
Amazing photography. 😍
Great stuff Joe! Always nice to see two photographers who shoot totally different stuff together doing their thing. Lovely shots btw, that highlight roll off looks lovely 👌
Cheers! I've enjoyed seeing this type of collab with other photographers as well, so it was great to make one myself.
Best 23 mins spent today. Cheers to both of you!!!
Glad you enjoyed it, and the other 23 hours and 37 mins of your day! 😅
Always enjoy your videos! The color is so pleasing.
First I thought the thumbnail looked like Mckinnon. Then read the title. Awesome indeed.
Love this! Huge fan of both of you. It’s always wonderful when two talents get together and make some photos :) cheers!
Thanks for the kind words and support! Cheers
Street meets Landscape 🚦🌳photography- two finest UK 🇬🇧 photographers - love the collaboration
Much appreciated! I'll definitely be attempting some landscape photography again some time...
Great video both!. The drone footage is a particular highlight for me, especially the side on tracking shot of the Deli.
I've been watching both of you for years, this true joy
Amazing, thanks for all the support!
The collab I needed
Two of the nicest dudes on RUclips. The Collab we didn't know we needed but the one we deserve.
Seems like you need to get to the country side a little more. What a random place to find a "99"🍦 . Surprised you didn't get some tea. Nice to see you guys get together. 👍🥂
Haha! I grew up in the countryside, so I always crave the hustle of the city. It's definitely good to explore every now and then to keep a balance! Also very surprised to see an ice cream van at the bottom of a hill, with barely anyone around... Maybe that's the business model?!
A collab I never would have expected to see but makes so much sense.
Now this was a nice surprise, two of my fav photographers working together, I look forward to seeing Toms results.
So jealous of this!
Wow, this was very different, and I'm also a fan of Tom's work, but this was also very interesting to see Joe outside the city, the sun looked really nice, but I could feel that cold. Have to say very much enjoyed this, and just what I needed to kick me up the.. well done Joe, all the best, say hello to Elly, catch you later folks.
Definitely different to my normal stuff, but glad you enjoyed it, Clive! The sun was absolutely beaming for the first week of this year and I’m totally taking that as a good omen for positive things to come!
@@joeallam yes mate with you there, the weekend coming is looking good, so trying to hatch a plan, just a thought maybe later in the year a trip to Bushy Park, would love to do that with you, or both, my number one place, all the best to you both, best wishes... Clive.
Great video Joe, nice to see you both out together and having an ice cream 🍦 in the icy landscape. Love the images.
Ice in the ice for sure, haha! Glad you enjoyed it!
I've been a fan of Thomas for a few years now, he's awesome. You...I just found you, and it only took about 3 minutes into this video and I hit subscribe! Looking forward to seeing more from you, past and in the future. Great Video!
Brilliant! Two of my favourite photographers for the price of one. Great video! 👍
Such a cool video. I really liked how you used the light in the photos, giving them a warm feel on a cold day.
Absolutely! Bright skies in the height of winter can be relentless at times, but they're always crisp and fresh. This day seemed to have a mix of all things at once!
This is the collab I didn’t know I needed.
Haha, glad you enjoyed it!
The best moment in this video is the ice cream scene.
A collaboration I would have never expected
Seems to have surprised quite a few people, which in turn has surprised me haha! Hope you enjoyed it!
My 2 favorite youtubers did a collab! This is like a dream comes true. Although I was inspired a bit more from Joe's style, both has been my greatest motivation to pick up the camera and shoot. Nice work as always!
Hi Joe
Gotta laugh,a chilly 1 deg . Come to Ottawa, Canada 🇨🇦 last Sunday minus 18 deg cent and I was out with my canon R6 😀
Love the video and the collab with Thomas
Take care
Andrew
I know right….we in the UK are forever complaining about the cold while we’re stood around in shorts and T-shirts.
Very good and relaxed video. I enjoy the way you handle it
Hi Joe nice to see you out and about with one of my fav. Thomas is funny because you two are so different photographer nice place love your photos of the tree's missiing Ellie....hope to see more of the two of you in the future 😊 ☺ enjoy and stay safe...
Yes, very much different photography styles for sure! Glad you enjoyed the vlog - it was a great day out!
Here am I sitting at my desk doing my IT job but watching someone else work in the open world… the dream 😩
Out of the comfort zone haha. Urban photography master in the wood ! Great to see you are always trying new things.
What a surprise!
Been wanting to do this for quite some time!
Finally a crossover i was hoping for long time :)
14:44 This was such a wholesome moment! Loved it! I might get an icecream now! :D
This is a joy to watch, beautiful countryside. The Fuji’s are fun to use. Good to see 2 of my faves out & about
Great video, should do more of this-Tom doing street?
I'd love to collaborate with more photographers and different styles. Could definitely make for some interesting results! Might take quite a bit of encouragement to get Tom down to London though... haha
I subscribe to Tom's channel so this video popped into my feed. Nice video, lovely images, will ceck out your other videos! Oh the 'I'm wearing jeans." comment cracked me up. Number 1 no-no of a hiker.
17:44 That is a lovely shot
I don't normally subscribe to channels recommended by other RUclipsrs, but on this occassion, I've had a watch of one of Tom's "van" videos, enjoyed the format, his presentation style, and the subject. So, on that, I'd like to thankyou for the suggestion. Tom is now +1 on his channel subscribers, and its your fault.
One thing I did spot - street (city) photographer - t-shirt, jumper, jeans, fleece, "high street" down jacket. Recipe for being cold, whereas a wild landscape photographer - modelling full technical clothing in multiple brands. Totally toastie.
Some quality images there too, Mr. Allam.
Now, I'd like to offer you a suggestion - get in touch with James Popsys (his channel name too) if you want to enjoy some more landscape stuff. I reckon you 2 would make a good video together.
23 minutes of great content, loved the longer vlog. So many amazing shots😍
Joe and Tom in the same video? Christmas has come very early indeed!
Two of the most interesting guys on the youtube. Glad this happened.
I really enjoy both of your content and together even more. Keep creating these awesome videos Joe! Btw your urban view paired with landscape makes the photos look really really good!
Hi everyone,
for me it is unbelievable. In the nowhere a Ice Cream Truck!!!!!
regards,
Andreas
Good to see you both in a video
It's been a long time coming!
Thoroughly enjoyed this video was nice to see your interaction with Thomas and it seemed like had a great time doing it. Although I love the solitude of photography but sometimes sharing the experience is great
Well this is a pleasant surprise! Good to see you collaborating with another of my favoured photographers. I bet you won't get Tom into an urban landscape though ;-)
Glad you enjoyed it - it definitely seems to have surprised quite a few people! I think it'll definitely take a lot of encouragement to get Tom down to London for a shoot haha!
First time I've seen one of your videos Joe, and it probably only showed because I like watching Thomas Heaton.
New subscriber 👍liking your style of photography and vlogging, can't beat a bit of flare and bright highlights. The shot of the Hassy viewfinder is quality.
Great video with Mr Heaton. Maybe Kase filters would work as they can attach magnetically and so would be relatively quick to use...
Really pleased to have "discovered" your channel. Street couldn't be more different from landscape photography, so this was an unexpected but interesting crossover. Looking forward to more...
Joe, the North of England ( Yorkshire, Cumbria, Tyne and Wear and Northumberland ) has some of the best locations in England for landscape photography
Great vid Joe and Tom.
A location I’ve been meaning to visit for a couple of years.
Live the lens flare and def recommend Kase magnetic filters. Not cheap, but top quality and quick to apply/remove.
🤙📸 subscribed. Already a Mr Heaton subby lol.
I miss my country... nothing like it.
Enjoyed that
Brilliant! Two of my favourite photographers on RUclips in one activity together. And, no - I didn't know about your "first love". I find those "meetings of minds" very teachable for the likes of me, because they present different philosophies side by side. Please, more - no "versus", I understand perfectly.
Thanks for the support and glad you enjoyed the video! I still the remember the early days of rushing out of school in the middle of winter, to chase the sunset at my local beach when I first got a DSLR - good times!
You need a set of Kase magnetic filters get 77 or 82 and use step rings.
Love your images, your style is great
Need more collaborations
Just been recommended this video and really enjoyed it, liked your images of the viaduct, it can be difficult with blue skies, ive shot that location a few times myself and there's always plenty to shoot with the limestone pavements. Really looking forward to watching your other videos 👍
I'll join the club and say how nice it was to see my two favorite RUclips photographers together :)
Ah, thanks Volker - much appreciated! It seems there's definitely a lot of crossover with both our channels!
Well that was a nice surprise to see Thomas Heaton on your channel. Some great images you got there Joe. I don't mind a bit of lens flare. Not sure how you can eat ice cream on a cold January day though, although for a 99Flake, I could be convinced. Haven't had one of them in forever.
Great to finally see you together. I got the impression though that you were both feeling underwhelmed/not feeling it. But you seemed to pull some lovely shots out of the bag. Was it a case that the images actually turned out better than you thought they would?
Well for someone who says he is not versed at landscape photography the images you showed on the blog sure where amazing. Really enjoyed them and the pace of this vlog! 🍻 Santé ;)
Thanks man, it's been such a long time since I did this style of photography, bug eager to attempt again sometime soon!
Interesting. The northern Moors, Dales and Peaks are really hardcore in the winter months. The realm of only the most dedicated landscape photographers. Kudos to you for trying it, but you did have it easy on a dry sunny day, if I may be honest.
A good northern lad -‘I left my wallet in the car’ 😂😂😂
Heyy buddy can u tell me after school what did u choose to become landscape photography???
Awesome collab 👍
Glad you enjoyed it! 🙌
Wow. Great collaboration and some nice pics Joe. Looking forward to Tom’s video.
Big question now is are you going to get Tom doing some urban photography. He tried some street photography years ago but it really wasn’t his thing. Maybe some blue hour shots with a tripod might entice him.
Thanks! Getting Tom down to London will definitely be a challenge, but I agree with you on the allure of blue hour with a tripod. Maybe I could set up some skyline locations and see if that whets his appetite...
Very refreshing to see you shoot a different kind of stone !
I'll borrow the same lens next week to test out, what's your take on it ?
Cheers! I think the 16-80mm is perfect for landscape photography. The 80mm reach in particular always surprises me how long it is and that's the end I usually find myself at when using this lens.
Awesome video, Joe! I have really been looking forward to this one! Your images in this vlog are superb. I'm loving the lens flares too. If you find a decent filter system to invest in for Fuji, I'd be very curious to know what you go with. I've been looking myself...
@@djstuc thanks! I will take a look and see where I can find Kase in Canada! Cheers.
Cheers man, and thanks for the mini thread on filter suggestions. I'll take a look into the Kase set too. Not entirely sure what my preferences/needs are, but I know I don't want to be using step-down rings and a massive filter on the front, so this might get expensive haha
Great images of Tom in his environment as well Joe and probably very rare!! get some proper walking shoes before the Polariser ;) - Subscribed !
Great video, can I ask what tripod you use?
Loved this video and seeing two of my favourite photographers together. Would you do more collab videos like this in the future. If you are ever in Cambridge, I would love to collab on a video. With it being harder to travel it might be easier travelling in the UK. Would love to see videos of you taking photos elsewhere in the UK
Cool video. Can you tell something more about the guidebook Thomas used? Name of the author and title would be great.
Great video. You would think you were lifelong friends. I seem to find that I usually find different to strike up a conversation with strangers but as soon as you have a camera and meet someone else with a camera you can get a long conversation going📷👍🏻
I'm like Joe to a large extent. I shoot a lot of landscapes. However, my best course in college was sociology. I got a 100% on the whole course, pop quizzes, tests, exams, and final exam. If you can't believe that I almost didn't either except for the fact I was looking at the grades in black and whit right there on the page I've never done that before or since. Consequently, the majority of my landscapes have people in them who are relating to the landscape in one way or another. Otherwise I do portraits, documentary portraits, head shots and photojournalism.
Random as. This autoplayed onto a Thomas Heaton collab. The lens flare thing I've never understood. It adds excitement. But modern photographers shun it and now after many years it is creeping back in with conditions. Those conditions are that utubers allow it as long as it is controlled and intentional. Which is funny. Because it really is a case of it is what it is. There really isn't a snobbery element to it. It is light and does add drama. I cant remember when it became a failing or poor technique I was out of photography for a while and it happened in that time frame. Anyway your shots are beautiful and was happy to stumble in here. Also love the over exposed areas. Also another failing and poor technique .... obviously lol. But light is light and there are no rules other than those imposed by your peers. But one rule always hold true. Its wrong and poor photographic knowledge and ability until it makes money. Suddenly it becomes sought after. It didn't even have a name when I was learning photography but now it does and now it has a name and a negative context 'clipped' highlights is a no no. But the funny thing is that now the only reason it can be avoided is nothing to do with photographic ability and all to do with paying £22.00 a month for LR subscription or other exposure blending and focus stacking software. Many a photographer would probably have to give up if LR went bust. Thank you for sharing your journey.
:42 Gavin Hardcastle. Lol
You’ll have do a reverse shoot, taking Tom into the city
Would definitely make for an interesting shift in perspective, but I'm keen for it!
Wonder why RUclips left the video quality which is set to auto at 480p, yet I can select the full 2160p 4K without any issue, for wjatever reason wonder if YT outside of the US deliberately does.
Oh dang, that's a shame! Sometimes RUclips on my iPad simply will not select anything but 480p, and then when I press play, it works perfectly... ha!
Polariser for sure; grads no need, just bracket and blend.
"Just bracket and blend" sounds like a catchphrase that needs to be followed by a sip of beer haha!
compositions could be worked on
Tom Hiddleston. That’s who you remind me of.
15:22 Isn't it amazing how that Limestone pavement Tom is walking on, high on the moors in northern England, was laid down by trillions of dead shell creatures in a tropical sea bed millions of years ago?
Very creative!!! Do not get left behind > P R O M O S M .
Thomas looks as bored as anything. In fact you both do.
Who did you steal your profile picture from? Did she give permission?
Who did you steal yours from, the blind photographer? You bellend.
