It's amazing how easy it is to live better, healthier etc. but we are so stuck with our "bad" habits that we literally end up giving ourselves the same excuses... again and again
It's interesting that it's nearly human nature, isn't it? You can literally tell a human "Hey, that thing you like? If you stop doing that one thing, you can live an extra 10+ years". They'll basically respond "OK Thanks!" and proceed to do it anyways. We really are a hopeless species controlled by our vices, aren't we?
darkstars101 Nah its pretty simple to figure out the evolutionary mechanism Eating as much super high fat, salt and sugar foods (alcohol is also high calorie) as possible, for the longest time was the most important just to not starve to death and being able to have kids (at like 15) There was no real advantage or chance a person would live much past 30 for most of human history so eating 10lbs of red meat and fat was great bc you wouldnt live till 70 to experience heart disease anyway Plus there where always only whole foods no processed stuff the only high sugar option was fruit not candy Same goes for drugs it was always more beneficial to get what made you happy short term but at least synthetic drugs where out of the picture so our mechanism excludes those On the dark side things like rape, murder, theft also are super valid actions in a nature setting/ beneficial to produce the most offspring So we dont need to be all shocked that the mechanism that proved beneficial for most our history (like 242000+ years out of ~ 250000+) dont work if everything changed in such a short time Bad news is that evolution doesnt work in the modern day and age nothing about our selection is natural anymore...being fat, stupid, sick, mentally ill, evil or shit like that will not keep you from having lots of kids, even tho we dont want that characteristics If at all it promotes it (looking at statistics on what groups have the most kids)
SANA • Fun It actually isn't all that easy though. The only easy things are not smoking and no/small amounts of alcohol. The rest is actually pretty damn difficult.
coen071993 Lol in what world are you living that the rest is MORE difficult - absolute nonsense By your standard all of it should be easy if its easy not to smoke ...since smoking is way more addicting than any other drug. In reality its not hard to live healthy but people are just not really motivated to do it because they think short term. We evolved to only worry about short to mid-term problems and like everything of that nature only really disciplined and strong people manage to force themselves to change. Everybody can controll what they put in their mouth - but they chose short term pleasure ignoring long term problems. Just like climate change, water waste, plastic waste, education, charity work - everybody is aware and mostly able to do more but they dont - based on excuses. Reality is most people understand what needs to be done but most are too mentally weak to change. Despite our fancy technology and culture we are still just naked apes.
I'm a chronically ill 34 year old with 3-4 major issues going on at any time, one a very rare and terrible neurological one. I'm sick to death of doctors and their egos but Dr. Mike is so damn nice and charming. Seems super down to earth and I love his videos, they kinda cheer me up on my flare up days. And I hate medical shows but his play by play and articulate way of explaining stuff is super interesting. And I'm a major dog person so I love that too. I hope he has a happy personal life, it seems that he does and good for him cuz I bet he deserves it. :)
sick to death of doctors....except for dr. mike....because hes beautiful. dont lie to yourself or us, we all know why you like him. beautiful people get comments like yours all the time....a doctor like mike who isnt so physically fortunate gets no love, because lets face it, good looking people are automatically more sympathized with and better trusted (seem smarter in our eyes when compared to others in their same field becasue WOW he has beauty AND brains)
@@ando1135 I would not say that "someone who is not that physically fortunate gets no love". People *can* be also *perceived* as smart, even when they don't look like Dr Mike. Yes, appearance surely has an effect on our very first thought /feeling about a person, and definitely plays a role in the world of showbiz and social media (and also in the amount of likes and comments). But this doesn't mean that it is the only reason behind them and that people who are not that physically appealing cannot "get nice comments" or be admired, trusted and respected more than those look prettier. Please, don't judge people by your first impression/thought and, one again please, never think that what you see is all there is. 😟🙏
@@ando1135 Evolutionarily speaking, it's literally the only thing that matters. Being attractive meant you got to pass on your genes and to some extent it still means this. It's the assumption of genetic superiority that we all have innately. Which means we like pretty people because we assume they are genetically sound, because we have nothing else to go by. And we hate pretty people because it means they are competition to pass on our own stupid genes. We're slowly moving past it a bit, but we like to pretend like it doesn't matter, instead of asking why it matters. Of course people care if someone is hot. Because it's meant to be an assessment of the individuals health and genes. If the name of the game wasn't procreation, we would absolutely not care what someone looks like. But we do, we do on subconscious levels with people we won't pass our genes on with. This shouldn't be admonished, it should be understood so we can work on a better way to use this deep set inclination we can't escape from. Being aware that one is doing so helps because it allows you to look deeper, but no one should be shamed for caring about looks, or trusting someone who is objectively hotter looking.
Loved this, Dr. Mike. This is why what you are doing makes such an impact. My patients typically are on the other end of the spectrum - i.e. dealing with consequences of NOT following these steps, putting them in situations that require serious surgery to fix. It's SO much better to follow these guidelines than to deal with the aftermath of ignoring them - like liver failure requiring transplant, serious vascular disease requiring amputations, lung cancer, etc. ...
That's actually a much better reason to follow these things than just living longer. I mean, I don't care about living until I'm 90. But I'd be happy to continue following these lifestyle choices to hopefully avoid surgeries and serious health issues down the road.
he is not a good doctor as you think, he made video commercial promoting alcohol and also encouraged drinking alcohol in his previous video. Maybe you didn't see that. Doctor Mike is a sold out doctor.
Elizabeth, I totally agree with you. And I think when Dr. Mike is talking about living longer, he also means living well for longer. I'd rather be living a happy independent life at age 90 than stuck in a hospital bed.
i read an article not too long ago about ikaria, greece and it made me really want to establish a lifestyle like them. the food they eat is so fresh and the way they live is so pure, something i feel like is harder to manage in america when a lot of what we eat is processed. being greek myself, i’m really inspired by them and i hope i’ll be able to adapt to that kind of lifestyle and diet as i continue to get older. thanks for the great video doc 🙌🏼
In America, we have giant grocery stores with many options for fresh and frozen fruits and vegetables, and also whole grains, beans, etc. There's also lots of processed foods on the shelves. If you choose to eat healthy, it's very easy to do so.
I mean, this is only really important if you want to live longer, which I don't really. I'm surprised that I made it this far, so I'm gonna live it up indulgently cause tomorrow is never promised.
As if ...you are just childish and will cry when the time comes about that you wished you did it different Also healthy living makes your life better NOW not only when your old
After chilling through my finals, I lost muscles and ate really unhealthy food and now it is so hard to loose my fat and to gain the muscles back... Your vid is reminding me to workout again... I'll start now... Oh... I have Doritos here.. Well, tomorrow.
Your five pillars make more sense, in my opinion. Especially stress management, because the effects of stress is often underestimated. Being able to live the moment, rather than being trapped in my own thoughts, have often helped me reduce stress.
Dude I love your videos I just recently (like 1.5 months ago) started watching your vids because of the doctors react to tv docs. But your so inspirational I am a cook and have been always fascinated with dietary and healthy eating and stuff but I have been only wanting to do a few college corses at my local community college for dietary but you inspired me to do the full masters so I can get my actual degree in it!
Doctor Mike thanks! I was originally wanting to do it just for the self/family knollege but with watching your videos especially this one it just fueled me more to go higher!
I am 33 now. Started to change my lifestyle last year, because my body was exhausted by the old one. With this video I realized how much I already achieved. It is all of the fife criteria now. Didn't expect that! I am so thankful and proud right now. It's amazing to feel my body getting healthier. Even my ability to focus and memorize is on a level I had the last time when I was 18. That's so amazing! I didn't do this because I wanted to add years to my life but because I slowly begin to love myself. And with love came meaning for my life and hope for my future. So I started with selfcare. There are so many interesting things I want to be able to do every day. And now this became possible again. To the person who reads this: Be kind to yourself. It's your journey
Pretty spot on. Add in the research on telomeres ... a nobel prize winning support. I agree with your 5 pillars: 1. Diet 2. Sleep 3. Stress 4. Exercise 5. Avoid Bad Habits Thumbs up on this video.
Doctor Mike Fantastic! I work in the mental health field and it is vital to bring more awareness, education, and simply care to the topic. Would love to hear your thoughts. :)
Hi Dr. Mike. Just came across your channel. It has really opened my eyes. I´ve been very depressed lately. Haven´t been working more than 40 hours a month after I lost my job and found a new part time job - so I´ve been alot at home. Sounds like a luxury for some, but it´s not luxury when you do it every day. Just like eating candy or celebrating your birthday everyday isn´t fun either. I noticed I started getting depressed ´cause I wasn´t feeling productive. And I didn´t even bother doing any housework. My husband would come home from a long day at work and see that I hadn´t done anything and get frustrated. I have alot of head ache. My hair is falling out. I get irritated alot and I´m already at a BMI over 30 and I keep gaining weight ´cause I just can´t eat the way that I should when I´m at home all the time. I´ve gotten anxiety about going out, and cancel all my plans almost. I hate the person I´m becoming, and couldn´t see a way out. I wanted to do so much with my career, but I didn´t have the strenght to do anything about it. And then I feel lazy, and that makes me even more depressed, and a bad mother. Anyway - I´ve been watching alot of your videos these couple of days and I feel I came across them for a reason. You´ve lit a spark in me to do something, and get my butt out there. Exercise, eat healthy and change my life and thinking. Just wanted to say thank you for that. You inspire me on so many levels - I bet you hear that all the time, but thank you anyway. Wish you could be my doctor, haha. You should be a public speaker
It was so unexpected to hear Seventh Day Adventists mentioned in this video. I am one and so was my great grandmother. She died at 94 and still worked in her garden at that age! 🙏
I don't understand why people have a fascination with living to be in their 90s, idk maybe it is just me but I want to die before I become a shell of who I once was.
But if you practice all this you can have a quality life until you're 100yrs old. I know people who have been physically active and eating clean for 35yrs plus and they are close to 80yrs old and they have the strength and stamina as if they were in their 20's and not to mention they look like they're in their early 40's!
And then, like every other married couple, either get a divorce or spend the next 70 years getting old and being miserable. Why does everyone want to get married and get old?
Sean O not everyone is miserable part is correct. However the rest of it, straight up bullshit. Feminism has nothing to do with that, so next time before you speak think or just shut your stupid sexist mouth.
Forget if Mike liked your comment or not, have you ACTUALLY changed anything? I doubt it. The average life span of the Philippines is only 68, so you'll still die early. But keep being "sending love", I'm sure that'll prevent you from dying 10 years earlier than any 1st world country.
"What's the hardest one of these five for you to follow?" Eating healthy, exercising and healthy weight. I get anxious, I eat, I get depressed, I don't move. So imagine that day in, day out. Overweight/obesity/fluctuating unhealthy weight. If it's going to start anywhere, it has to start with mental health. Mental health is the key to living longer. If you care about you, you'll take care of you.
I love how passionate about healthcare Dr. Mike is, I wish and hope more of the health care providers become like this (I am an RN) :) he will encourage other's with his positivity
Agreed 💯. Thank you Dr. Mike. I’m 51 and I changed my Healthy Life style since 2015. It’s hard from the beginning, discipline is the key. I still have a down fall when it comes to food. But thanks to my kids they always remind me 😉 is it true for woman once we reached over 50 our metabolism slows down? Hope your next topic is about metabolism so I could have more better understanding 🙌🏽 as always I love your vid. I always look forward to watch you every Sunday 👏🏽 again thank you and stay healthy and handsome 😘😘😘🤩
Dr. Mike have you ever thought about doing a podcast? I'd love to be able to listen to a longer form of your content...you know, in all the spare time you have!
Thank you so much for this video! I’ve been trying to help my mom get healthier, so I showed her this and she now is more determined than ever to get healthy!
I am a 50-year-old woman and I do not wish to live until I am 93. Bless all those who do, and when I was young I wanted to live until I was 120. But then I developed osteoarthritis and am in pain pretty much every single day and it gets worse every year. So. I'm ok with an average of 25-30-ish more years. I eat well and stay active, which I think has helped my quality of life. But, I'm definitely ok with checking out in my 70s.
Hi Doctor Mike, so happy you mentioned Seventh-Day Adventists! I'm an SDA planning to study in Loma Linda Uni as well! Love watching your videos since I always learn something new. Continue to inspire! Regards from Indonesia.
It surprises me how with simple habits we can change the years that we will live. I guess, these habits are easy, it has never really been difficult for me to break bad habits. It is been a long time since I changed these 5 habits and the truth is that I feel much better.
I am & always have followed them all. At 56 I realize it was a very good thing I did. Considering my genetic I'd probably be dead by now. Not sure 93 is in the cards, but I'll keep trying. Thanks for the video encouragement.
Since I have a history of diabetes on both sides of my family I'm pretty much obligated to maintain a healthy lifestyle otherwise I'm screwed! I hadn't begun, but then 30 hit and it got real. So I have started walking every morning and working on portion control. Not completely radical chancmge, but baby steps.
I follow all of these habits and it's NOT hard! I would say the hardest one is exercising regularly (although I do). It can just be hard to fit it into a busy lifestyle.
Hey Doctor Mike, you should do an episode on asthma about 1) what it is 2) causes (genetics or environmental) 3) treatments for maintenance and for someone with a URI or Bronchitis (natural and medical). I’ve lived with asthma my whole life (I’m 24) and I’ve done a lot of research on it and in my experiences most everyone that doesn’t have asthma and isn’t in the medical field know next to nothing about asthma and it could be beneficial for people to better understand what it is and what causes it. Plus I am interested to see your take on this subject and how it lines up with a lot of doctors I’ve come across.
Good habits should be adopted as young as possible, because as an adult it becomes impossible. Willpower is an important part of deciding to make a real change in our lives, we always need an incentive to do so.
Doctor Mike, thank you for this video. About 2 years ago, after living with diabetes for 8 years, I "woke up" and changed my lifestyle completely. I lost over 60 pounds and my A1c stayed below 5.4 for over a year. After a very rough couple of months (lost my Mom, husband has Parkinson's and is starting to decline faster) I slipped a little bit but I'm now more motivated to get back to my healthy routine. Keep these videos coming.
I follow most of the rules on the list (not smoking, drinking,....) but I think it's also important to enjoy life and just not worry too much, especially when it comes to the diet. French people for example eat everything they like (lots of butter, baguettes, sweets) and have a very good life expectancy.
Have you ever heard of Matthew Walker? He's a neuroscientist who specializes in sleep and after hearing him speak, I was blown away by the incredible importance of sleep. I knew it was important but I never knew how much. He argues that rather than sleep, exercise and diet being the three pillars of a healthy lifestyle, sleep is the main pillar which supports the other two. I'm not qualified to give anyone advice but I recommended checking out his stuff if you haven't!
Why not ask your doctor? They can answer on a more personal basis towards your RX history. If you're Canadian, or apart of most European countries, they can even refer you too a Nutritionist for no extra cost. At the very least, they can interject scientific and factual points that the Internet will never be able to satisfy.
Just make a list of the top 3 most unhealthy ingredient and avoid them, no point in trying to cut out the 1500+ ingredient people conceive as "Unhealthy" when you'll just give up. Just at least be dedicated, stop being lazy, and cut out the top few. Otherwise you'll die years earlier and frankly you'll deserve it because you refused to take the extra 3 minutes a day and look at ingredient. Your choice, no?
darkstars101 That does make sense, hopefully I'll be there sooner than I think! Nothing is easy but it's definitely worth working hard for💁🏻👏🏼 Thank you for that!
This actually reminds me of my grandmother who lived a similar lifestyle.. Keep in mind this was just her lifestyle so take with a grain of salt. She lived to be 100 years old. During her life she was constantly moving thanks to running a farm, ate only what she grew or raised with the exception of a few things, she engaged in her community both spiritual and local, and she kept her mind active.
Me too, I'd love to live a long life. More time means more adventures, more memories, more things to see and learn. My grandpa for example lived 97 years!! I love cooking, using fresh ingredients, I even grow some fruits and vegetables in my garden. I don't drink alcohol and I don't smoke. I guess my main problems are stress and the lack of exercise. I quit school when I was younger but I always wanted to go to university which is why I took evening classes. So for 3 years I worked two jobs, one Monday-Friday during the day, another one on weekends and holidays, Monday-Friday every evening 5 hours at school and 8 hours a week I tutored refugee kids for free... It's better now since I finally got my highschool diploma but I feel like my body still has to adapt... But regarding the exercise I'd like to ask you a question. Like I said I have two jobs. I work at a school where I help the kids with their homework and their problems and we play together after they finish their classes. And I also work as a waitress. So I'm kinda active already. Here's my problem. I have joint hypermobility syndrome. I always loved working out but then my joints but then my joints started to hurt which is why I did less and less exercise and I gained weight. On really bad days I can't even hold a cup or walk the stairs up to my room. My muscles are always tense, especially my shoulders... What would you recommend to do? Are there any special exercises or anything else that would help me to work out more without being in pain all the time?
I think a huge thing that a lot of people forgot about healthy diet is moderation. Most people will go crazy with a couple "health foods" when it actually can do a lot of harm when the better alternative is to have a lot wider ranges of foods where yes you can cut out stuff like soda and stuff like that but having a burger or steak every once in a while is good. Everything in moderation and nothing in excess
Exercising... It'll probably change once I move back to a village and have kids. I grew up in a village and was outside with my mom whole days while I wasn't sleeping, eating or if there was fog (yes, even in the rain)... Even after that, I used to use my bike to get around a LOT because there are no cops in villages, you can get a ticket for not driving on the road (with a bike) while the sidewalk is empty and off limits (and way safer)... I really hope to move back soon and I'm not even in a big city, it's more like a small town. The most exercise I get is when I rarely go on 3-4 hour rides (trail riding) or when I go on a 4-6km walk which is 500x harder to do when it's 30-40C outside for 4ish months... I hate fitnesses and excercizes without a goal, I go on my bike to go somewhere, I climb a tree to get a view, I ride a horse for fresh air and feeling of freedom, weights and machines seem so plain, soulless, like I'm wasting time and money.
It's wonderful and incredible that to add only 5 habits in your every day can give to you 10 more years of life. But I think that today it's so hard to keep these habits every day. Personally is very hard to keep a healthy life style, because I don't have much time to exercise and eat healthy. And maybe the time it's only a pretext to be more healthy and do the things that I should put in practice. I may start adding those 5 habits to my daily life. Thanks for the video :)
Hi, I would love to hear more about Spirituality in the healthcare setting. Can you give examples of what you all do on a daily basis that looks out for the patient's health needs but also their spirituality is considered
What the doctor says is very interesting since he gives us certain habits that we can follow to have a healthy life. It is true that these habits must be without excess. There are various points and answers. We could implement what they recommend, and live longer
I just want to say THANK YOU! For speaking so clearly and enunciating so well that I can actually understand what you say without using CC. I am 50% deaf in both ears so when it comes to watching stuff anywhere I always put CC on especially TV. When it comes to RUclips its even more tricky because some CC doesnt even have the right words with what the person is actually saying so it makes it difficult for me to listen to music or watch videos like this. So again thank you so much Dr. Mike! :) P.S. You are funny and adorable. I love watching your videos. You make my day!! :) :) :)
OH MY GAAAAH. I'm totally in love with your videos dude! why you so cute? come on! Just keep doing what you are doing cause you definitely good at it. Love you x
Hey Doc, what do you think of this post my mom found on facebook? 1. If walking is good for your health, the postman would be immortal. 2. A whale swims all day, only eats fish, only drinks water, yet is fat. 3. A rabbit only eats vegetables, runs and hops all day long, yet only lives 5 years. 4. A tortoise doesn't run and does nothing energetic, yet lives for centuries. And you tell me to exercise? I don't think so!
Completely different species and what works for some does not work for all. Walking is not really considered exercise unless you are very de conditioned and are working your way up to more exercise or are much older. Also exercise alone does not decide you’re health. Exercise a lot but eat 10 Big Macs a day and you won’t live longer than average :)
That's a post driven by un-education and fueled by those refusing to face the facts, and justify their poor lifestyles. Thankfully natural selection will have those people that believe in that post die early. It's obvious that a comparison between the biological lifespan of Whales, Rabbits, and Humans is just ridiculous. Especially when countless scientific studies prove certain activities, and avoiding certain foods/vices will yield a substantial increase in lifespan for Human's.
I'm an Interior Stylist in NYC and I adore your apartment (health is your thing, home is mine!). Random question: did you get a new sofa? I'm diggin' the one in this video! Maybe do a segment on creating a healthy home environment (cleanliness, organization for mental peace, etc)?
Hi Mike! I have a question. I got diagnosed with lymphoma at age 22, its been 15 months since I finished chemo. Does people who had cancer have a normal life expectancy? I've asked this several times and people just say live a day a the time bla bla bla... I want actual facts. Great video btw
Andreu Caballero I’m not a doctor but i think that now you have a higher risk of gettin cancer again, but I don’t think it will change your lifespan. Since you survived surely you will value life more than people who didn’t have cancer and you will follow a healthy lifestyle so it will help you.
Hey Andreu, Thanks for the question. Sorry to hear about your diagnosis, I hope you are doing well after chemo treatment. Now the answer is a fairly complex one as it depends on the condition of your health prior to cancer diagnosis/treatment, other illnesses, type of chemo, staging of your cancer, family history, etc. However what research has shown (this is pretty generalizable for most illnesses and even life in general) is that if you had cancer once in your life, you are now living with a higher likelihood to have another cancer or a recurrence of your previous cancer when compared to the general population. A commonly asked question to med students is "What is the biggest risk factor for a heart attack (or cancer)?" and despite all the great answers that students give the correct answer is "having had a heart attack in the past (or cancer)". All this being said I don't have a concrete answer to your question. Most of the research we have on cancer life expectancy comes in the form of % survival at 5, 10, 20...years or rates of recurrence. I would strongly advise to ask your oncologist or ask your primary doctor to ask your oncologist where you can find research on this topic or if they can give you some statistics directly. Also with or without a history of cancer, live life to the fullest as if today is the last day, and treat your body well to give it the best chance to survive and thrive. Hope that helps and I wish you the best of luck on your life's journey!
hey Dr. Mike! im a seventh-day adventist and i think the main reason why we live longer is because we believe in following a mostly vegeterian diet. if you feel like researching a little bit more about it u can look up Ellen G. White, shes an author from the mid 1800s and also one of the founders of our church. the book that she adresses our diet and stuff is called Healthy Living, ive read it a bunch of times and its helping me a lot as a medial student. its worth checking out!! shout out from Brasil! your videos are real good man!
I'm actually trying to fix my lifestyle habits so that I can feel better, my personal 5 habits that I'm working on: 1. Sleeping regularly: I noticed a big change to how I feel in the morning and throughout the day regarding mental awareness and whether I was dead by 3PM after about 3 days of getting consistent sleep. (happy you mentioned it in the description :) ) 2. Hydration: I heard from my anat & phys teacher that it's recommended that a person drink half their body weight (LBS) in ounces of water. For me that's almost 12 cups a day, and it really does help! before changing this I could easily forget to drink water AT ALL for a day, now I have less digestive issues and don't feel bad after eating even the richest of foods (but I'm working on cutting those out anyway....) 3. moderate exercise: Since I started doing yoga twice a day, I've noticed that I fall asleep easier, when I wake in the morning I'm not sore, and sitting at my desk all day doesn't hurt my spine like it used to. It also helps with my inconsistent breathing. 4. Eating healthy: This is still a work in progress.... I went to a potluck yesterday and had a few too many desserts.... 5. Stress management: honestly after started the first three on my list I realized that I've been less irritable, I only get stressed over major life hiccups or time (I have allegrophobia, that is, the fear of being late)
Jamie Ye all of it is easy once it's a habit. Think of yourself like a character in a game and habits are your skills. My goal is to live as long as I can through health until science can make me immortal.
Jamie Ye moderate physical activity and stress management can both be ticked off the list by just walking more everyday (go to the park or something) and avoiding stressful relationships.
Your choice, no?
darkstars101 first of all, thank you. The top 3 thing sounds like a really nice idea and imma try that out. But my current problem about eating healthy is I rarely eat vegetables because I just don't like them. I'm 22, I should be forcing myself to eat vegetables, right? but yeah, I need input on that one please.
Some people here are saying they are here for a good time and not for a long time but I really believe that we can be here for a good time in a long time!
Dear Doctor Mike, in no way am I questioning your knowledge (I would never) however science has proven that meditation *DOES* indeed take a huge part in staying healthy, both mentally and physically. Sara Lazar, a neuroscientist at Harvard University, found the following in her neuroimaging studies on meditation: “We found differences in brain volume after eight weeks in five different regions in the brains of the two groups. In the group that learned meditation, we found thickening in four regions: 1. The primary difference, we found in the posterior cingulate, which is involved in mind wandering, and self-relevance. 2. The left hippocampus, which assists in learning, cognition, memory, and emotional regulation. 3. The temporo parietal junction, or TPJ, which is associated with perspective-taking, empathy, and compassion. 4. An area of the brain stem called the Pons, where a lot of regulatory neurotransmitters are produced. The amygdala, the fight-or-flight part of the brain which is important for anxiety, fear, and stress in general. That area got smaller in the group that went through the mindfulness-based stress-reduction program. The change in the amygdala was also correlated to a reduction in stress levels.” (The Washington Post) I myself have experienced that first hand, I suffer from severe anxiety and was hospitalized before because my fear became so extreme that I blacked out. Since I started meditating, my health has improved immensely. Just wanted to share that information with you, thank you for your hard work and your awesome videos!
Physical activity is the hardest one for me now. I used to be very active but now it's hard for me to exercise even weekly. But I have a so so healthy lifestyle and rarely do drugs (alcohol/cigarettes). I also try to sleep enough hours and avoid as much as possible stressful situations.
"An apple a day keeps the doctor away "
*_Never eats apple ever again_*
mostly said by apple seller.
but you don't wanna stay away from the doctor if he looks like that.
This is an age old statement that makes A LOT of sense.....unless of course you're allergic to apples =]
Kalyani Ghuge hhh yes 😍😍😍
HOW DOPE IS THAT BRUH?
I mean. Men, they don’t have to get pregnant, period, stress about their baby or family. But WE HAVE SHORTER LIFE EXPECTANCY, NUUU
what... we don't stress about our family or kids... idiot
Um.... no need to say idiot....
yes there is, you said men don't need to stress about family or their kids.. that in my opinion is something an idiot would say
Andrew Choo 😭😂
It's amazing how easy it is to live better, healthier etc. but we are so stuck with our "bad" habits that we literally end up giving ourselves the same excuses... again and again
It's interesting that it's nearly human nature, isn't it? You can literally tell a human "Hey, that thing you like? If you stop doing that one thing, you can live an extra 10+ years". They'll basically respond "OK Thanks!" and proceed to do it anyways. We really are a hopeless species controlled by our vices, aren't we?
darkstars101
Nah its pretty simple to figure out the evolutionary mechanism
Eating as much super high fat, salt and sugar foods (alcohol is also high calorie) as possible, for the longest time was the most important just to not starve to death and being able to have kids (at like 15)
There was no real advantage or chance a person would live much past 30 for most of human history so eating 10lbs of red meat and fat was great bc you wouldnt live till 70 to experience heart disease anyway
Plus there where always only whole foods no processed stuff the only high sugar option was fruit not candy
Same goes for drugs it was always more beneficial to get what made you happy short term but at least synthetic drugs where out of the picture so our mechanism excludes those
On the dark side things like rape, murder, theft also are super valid actions in a nature setting/ beneficial to produce the most offspring
So we dont need to be all shocked that the mechanism that proved beneficial for most our history (like 242000+ years out of ~ 250000+) dont work if everything changed in such a short time
Bad news is that evolution doesnt work in the modern day and age nothing about our selection is natural anymore...being fat, stupid, sick, mentally ill, evil or shit like that will not keep you from having lots of kids, even tho we dont want that characteristics
If at all it promotes it (looking at statistics on what groups have the most kids)
darkstars101 wow it makes me want to just embrace early death haha
SANA • Fun It actually isn't all that easy though. The only easy things are not smoking and no/small amounts of alcohol. The rest is actually pretty damn difficult.
coen071993
Lol in what world are you living that the rest is MORE difficult - absolute nonsense
By your standard all of it should be easy if its easy not to smoke ...since smoking is way more addicting than any other drug.
Oh I totally agree with you Stevie M he's so nice and charming!!!!!!
I really hope everything works out for you. Take care ❤
One day, I'm going to be street interviewed by doctor Mike... Buuuuut I live in Nigeria😂
I’m not from the states and by chance my friend and I bumped into him, there’s still hope! 😂❤️
Don’t worry, he is coming to Africa after the pandemic 😂😅

Its not only about living longer, but living a higher quality of life.
Mike is talking about higher quality of life + longer
Absolutely.
U ruined the moments
Im a new subscriber! Cant believe it took me so long to find your amazing channel. Keep up the good work!👍
Really happy to hear that!
one of my favourite quotes is: It’s Not the Years in Your Life That Count. It’s the Life in Your Years. words to live by tbh
Watching your videos definitely increase my lifespan :D
not just yours... not just yours... and not just the lifespan ;)... lol and I am not gay
Haha get That heart racing a bit more than usual 😂. Awesome videos. Thanks Dr.Mike
Gabrielle Morin lol make sure that's not tachycardia😏
i read an article not too long ago about ikaria, greece and it made me really want to establish a lifestyle like them. the food they eat is so fresh and the way they live is so pure, something i feel like is harder to manage in america when a lot of what we eat is processed. being greek myself, i’m really inspired by them and i hope i’ll be able to adapt to that kind of lifestyle and diet as i continue to get older. thanks for the great video doc 🙌🏼
In America, we have giant grocery stores with many options for fresh and frozen fruits and vegetables, and also whole grains, beans, etc. There's also lots of processed foods on the shelves. If you choose to eat healthy, it's very easy to do so.
I love the relationship Dr Mike has with his patients. I wish my Dr was like him 😭.
I wish he was my doctor!!!!!
I mean, this is only really important if you want to live longer, which I don't really. I'm surprised that I made it this far, so I'm gonna live it up indulgently cause tomorrow is never promised.
As if ...you are just childish and will cry when the time comes about that you wished you did it different
Also healthy living makes your life better NOW not only when your old
After chilling through my finals, I lost muscles and ate really unhealthy food and now it is so hard to loose my fat and to gain the muscles back... Your vid is reminding me to workout again... I'll start now... Oh... I have Doritos here.. Well, tomorrow.
Boom! Grab those doritos and head off to the gym!
Doctor Mike Thanks for the motivation ✌
If your doctor tells you to eat doritos you know you’re good
Your five pillars make more sense, in my opinion. Especially stress management, because the effects of stress is often underestimated. Being able to live the moment, rather than being trapped in my own thoughts, have often helped me reduce stress.
I don't smoke
Don't drink
I exercise daily
I have healthy weight
I can't eat healthy 😂
That is so mee
Yes u can
same
I hate food
Same
Hahaha you made my day Doctor Mike, I’m recovering of a tonsil surgery and while recovering I’m watching your videos.
Aww I hope you recover quickly Ashely! Stay healthy and happy!!
Doctor Mike Thank you, I will!
Wow, that awesome! So glad to hear you are pursuing a degree to your highest potential. Never sell yourself and your mind short of knowledge!
Doctor Mike thanks! I was originally wanting to do it just for the self/family knollege but with watching your videos especially this one it just fueled me more to go higher!
Is this moderate intensity exercise?😂😂
I agree with your 5 pillars:
1. Diet
2. Sleep
3. Stress
4. Exercise
5. Avoid Bad Habits
Thumbs up on this video.
Please do a video on mental health! You’re amazing Dr Mike❤️❤️
Mental health video is incoming!
Doctor Mike Fantastic! I work in the mental health field and it is vital to bring more awareness, education, and simply care to the topic. Would love to hear your thoughts. :)
3:14 is THIS moderate intensity exerCISE?
Fajer njr lmmaaaoo that part was the best
Omg that part is my mood lmaooo
I am already doing 4/5!!! I'm so happy right now.
Hi Dr.
The idea is to live to 90 feeling healthy with a good quality of life.
You say that now, you won't be saying that when you're old.
I agree but I still wouldn't want that for myself personally btw thank you for responding lol I feel cool that you responded to my comment 😅
don't tell me what I am going to change my opinion, you don't know me.
But if you practice all this you can have a quality life until you're 100yrs old. I know people who have been physically active and eating clean for 35yrs plus and they are close to 80yrs old and they have the strength and stamina as if they were in their 20's and not to mention they look like they're in their early 40's!
step 1 Get doctor mike to ask you out on a date
step 2 Get him to propose
step 3 Have several blissful and stress free years of marriage together
And then, like every other married couple, either get a divorce or spend the next 70 years getting old and being miserable. Why does everyone want to get married and get old?
Not everyone is miserable like you elizabeth you fat ugly feminist
Sean O that escalated quickly lol
Sean O not everyone is miserable part is correct. However the rest of it, straight up bullshit. Feminism has nothing to do with that, so next time before you speak think or just shut your stupid sexist mouth.
Step 3 is already bull, even he admits he often stresses like crazy.
Your channel is definitely one of the most educational, enlightening channels ever. Sending love all the way from the Philippines. Yeyy! xoxo
OMGGGGGG I'M SCREAMINGGGGGG DOCTOR MIKE LOVED MY COMMENT UWAHHHHHHHH MY HEART IS POUNDING. 😍
Agreed
Forget if Mike liked your comment or not, have you ACTUALLY changed anything? I doubt it. The average life span of the Philippines is only 68, so you'll still die early. But keep being "sending love", I'm sure that'll prevent you from dying 10 years earlier than any 1st world country.
hello 你好

Yaih.... Wake up early on,sunday's just to watch your videos with my mom... Our favorite thing to do together.... ✨💕
Dr. Mike have you ever thought about doing a podcast? I'd love to be able to listen to a longer form of your content...you know, in all the spare time you have!
I would love to do a podcast, wish there was more interest for one!
sushicatsan I'd listen to it too
Thank you so much for this video!
Definitely eating healthy. I exercise 4-5 times a week, don’t smoke or drink but, food is...yeah😂
Hi Doctor Mike, so happy you mentioned Seventh-Day Adventists! I'm an SDA planning to study in Loma Linda Uni as well! Love watching your videos since I always learn something new. Continue to inspire! Regards from Indonesia.
4/5 let’s go but I get a free pass on 2 of them because I’m to young to smoke or drink thanks dr. Mike
Haha well get to 5/5 and you’ll be a happy camper :)
Positive thinking helps to live healthy live too.
I like how you said "how dope is that bruh" lol. You're really the coolest doctor.
😂😂😂😂 omg I love the bloopers at the end. Something I always look forward to!! It makes it so much more relatable 😂
Wish there was more bloopers they're really interesting
Another quality content! Thank you for being a current inspiration to aspiring doctors 😊💖
Thanks Maria, happy to hear you're enjoying the content. Please feel free to share with your friends and family!
It's called a video. Stop being part of the problem. Stop replacing random words with "content".
aliphim gosh, chill😂
aliphim stop being part of the problem. you're making arguments with such tiny details. couldn't we all just agree this is QUALITY he's sharing.
Early!!! Please tell me what is your handwriting like?!?!?
And plus, you're the best doctor ever!
I love your vids!
Fatima Humayun Yeah Dr Mike, we would love to see your handwriting.
Dr. Mike's handwriting is most likely like every other doctors.
You can't read it well lol
Regina Wohletz I get it. But I have seen a few doctors with good handwriting even. Hopefully our Mikey is one such. ☺
Well he's third best after Dr. Lustig and Dr. Jason Fung
Fatima Humayun watch his nighttime routine and you’ll find his handwriting is terrible! Sorry mike, finally found some dirt on ya
OMG at the "Moderate Physical Activity" 😂😂😂 Handsome doctors can be huge dorks too. Thanks for the laugh ❤
I was just searching for content like this yesterday. Thanks for the helpful and timely content!
great video as always!!
Exercise is the hardest!
Dr. Mike - What are your thoughts on the Keto diet?
This is a great question, I will do a diet review of Keto very soon!
Why not ask your doctor? They can answer on a more personal basis towards your RX history. If you're Canadian, or apart of most European countries, they can even refer you too a Nutritionist for no extra cost. At the very least, they can interject scientific and factual points that the Internet will never be able to satisfy.
darkstars101 this is free advice, I’d have to pay to ask my doctor this question.
lsshorty7 keto has a very fast effect, but can be very hard to keep up
Eating healthy is hard to get used to, but I'm definitely on my way there💃🏻
Just make a list of the top 3 most unhealthy ingredient and avoid them, no point in trying to cut out the 1500+ ingredient people conceive as "Unhealthy" when you'll just give up.
Dr. Mike: Add years to your life!
Me: Why though?
Mood
When you're older you'll understand. Probably. Unless you're already "older," in which case forget I said anything.
This is a beautifully made and edited video
The hardest for me is eating healthy. I eat healthy most of the time except on weekends when I eat tons of sugar.
Well, you must not want that extra 10 years then, huh?
Sugar is my heroin. RIP me.
Same. I can eat the healthiest during the week. I even count my calorie. But on the weekend 😕😫. I slip a little 😋😂.
How DOPE is this video BRUH?
I think a huge thing that a lot of people forgot about healthy diet is moderation. Most people will go crazy with a couple "health foods" when it actually can do a lot of harm when the better alternative is to have a lot wider ranges of foods where yes you can cut out stuff like soda and stuff like that but having a burger or steak every once in a while is good. Everything in moderation and nothing in excess
It’s pretty fascinating that women live longer. Their body goes through so many milestones and challenges. Pregnancy, menopause, etc.
I follow only two/five habits🙂 that are not smoke and I don't drink either b/c I am a Muslim 😇.
Lots of love to you Dr. Mike from Pakistan 🇵🇰💚🇵🇰💚
Oh, I'm Seventh day adventist!
And here I thought my church was just playing!
hehe, same! :D
I love this man
Aww thank you! I really appreciate your support =]
I’m so happy u mentioned plant based diet ☺️☺️
I’m a fan, I’ve said it in other videos
Doctor Mike yay I’m a new subscriber so didn’t know yet ☺️
You a vegan?
Brian Aguilar I am, why do you ask?
teshia mcquade you implied it with your comment.
I love this! I want to live forever! Thank you for being so helpful, Mike!😀👍
For #2, dolphins and sharks swim all the time, and you never see a fat shark or fat dolphin. So swimming is good for you.
darkstars101 or maybe it just means this person has a good sense of humour? But that cant be it; he definitely must believe what he posted.
The classic "is this moderate intensity " literally makes me wheeze laughing every time 😂
My favourite thing is when Dr Mike talks to people on the streets. Love it
I'm an Interior Stylist in NYC and I adore your apartment (health is your thing, home is mine!).
Atena Nike nah man she has had cancer or lymphoma so her immune system is use to it I could say it's the same with vaccination
This was a great video and an important one
Dr. Mike : do you know how to live longer ?
Me : yes, looking at u everyday keeps my stress away... 😇🤗
hey Dr. Mike!
im a seventh-day adventist and i think the main reason why we live longer is because we believe in following a mostly vegeterian diet. if you feel like researching a little bit more about it u can look up Ellen G. White, shes an author from the mid 1800s and also one of the founders of our church. the book that she adresses our diet and stuff is called Healthy Living, ive read it a bunch of times and its helping me a lot as a medial student. its worth checking out!!
shout out from Brasil! your videos are real good man!
Nice! I asked about the Seventh-day Adventist on a comment, but no one replied.
...and don't stress! It is incredible how many health issues stem from stress.
Curbside consult NYC part 2!!!!
Wow, I'm on time for once
That One Person this is one only person I care about
Andrea Nelson when a comment response to mine is so relatable
Where are my fellow Adventists? 😄
It is very important to achieve a healthy lifestyle because it helps us to live without diseases that can be prevented.
I'm actually trying to fix my lifestyle habits so that I can feel better, my personal 5 habits that I'm working on:
1. Sleeping regularly: I noticed a big change to how I feel in the morning and throughout the day regarding mental awareness and whether I was dead by 3PM after about 3 days of getting consistent sleep. (happy you mentioned it in the description :) )
2. Hydration: I heard from my anat & phys teacher that it's recommended that a person drink half their body weight (LBS) in ounces of water. For me that's almost 12 cups a day, and it really does help! before changing this I could easily forget to drink water AT ALL for a day, now I have less digestive issues and don't feel bad after eating even the richest of foods (but I'm working on cutting those out anyway....)
3. moderate exercise: Since I started doing yoga twice a day, I've noticed that I fall asleep easier, when I wake in the morning I'm not sore, and sitting at my desk all day doesn't hurt my spine like it used to. It also helps with my inconsistent breathing.
4. Eating healthy: This is still a work in progress.... I went to a potluck yesterday and had a few too many desserts....
5. Stress management: honestly after started the first three on my list I realized that I've been less irritable, I only get stressed over major life hiccups or time (I have allegrophobia, that is, the fear of being late)
i don't drink or smoke, so it leaves me the rest is hard for me
Well' according to the study, it's not enough. You'll still die early.
ya..... that's what the video say, u need all 5..... i did watch the video u know, i'm just saying the rest is hard
Jamie Ye all of it is easy once it's a habit. Think of yourself like a character in a game and habits are your skills.
My goal is to live as long as I can through health until science can make me immortal.
Jamie Ye moderate physical activity and stress management can both be ticked off the list by just walking more everyday (go to the park or something) and avoiding stressful relationships.
easiest for me is not smoking, hardest is eating healthy
Just make a list of the top 3 most unhealthy ingredient and avoid them, no point in trying to cut out the 1500+ ingredient people conceive as "Unhealthy" when you'll just give up. Just at least be dedicated, stop being lazy, and cut out the top few. Otherwise you'll die years earlier and frankly you'll deserve it because you refused to take the extra 3 minutes a day and look at ingredient. Your choice, no?
Me too!
darkstars101 first of all, thank you. The top 3 thing sounds like a really nice idea and imma try that out. But my current problem about eating healthy is I rarely eat vegetables because I just don't like them. I'm 22, I should be forcing myself to eat vegetables, right? but yeah, I need input on that one please.
I can sympathise with you.
“How dope is that, BRUH” 😂😂😂
Some people here are saying they are here for a good time and not for a long time but I really believe that we can be here for a good time in a long time!
I don't wanna live long without you and your videos..
Love you from France😀😀😀😀
Im here for a good time not a long time😂
Point but what is good time you will remember nothing when you die 0 that's way people do things
Great! Back to "YOUR TYPE" of videos.
In the group that learned meditation, we found thickening in four regions:
The change in the amygdala was also correlated to a reduction in stress levels.” (The Washington Post)
I myself have experienced that first hand, I suffer from severe anxiety and was hospitalized before because my fear became so extreme that I blacked out.
