As someone who suffers with Hypochondria, I would say this movie brilliantly expresses what it is like to have this anxiety disorder. If you're not sure what Hypochondria is, it's when someone thinks they have a disease or terminal illness, and avoid things that may cause them cancer or some serious side effect, and this movie just nails it... it feels good knowing I'm not the only one afraid...

I think that’s what needs to happen with this movie to fully intake. Midsommar is about manipulation, falling into a cult, toxic relationships and oh man. It's horror, but in a way we haven't seen in a really long time.
The times where it feels modern are where Aster seems to be self referencing his previous movies.

  • @graizur

This film is not about itself, it is about the audience, which why AN audience plays sucha prominant role in the finale. This film is about the audiences inabilty to anticipate or concieve of a Joker film staring Phoenix where Arthur Fleck dances from One movie continuity to Another; eventually making his way to the Snyder verse; so we can have a Pathos verses Mythos battle between an Omnipotent Joker (Emperor Joker) and a Plot Armor Superman and Prep-Time Batman. The movie is ABOUT how | no matter how much rope I give you | you can never hang yourself because YOU don't exist.
Beau Is Afraid is about All the GIVING "The Coward" or "The Dominated Man" does and how no matter how much is given you never have any creativity besides Perspective Free Economic Games. You can't imagine, concieve of, talk about, or even THEORIZE about Jaquin Phoenix Joker's Reality being unreliable because the only thing you can do is regurgitate and recycle film school superiority sentiments likwe "Unreliabel Narrarator". That's what this film is about; the failure of the audience to produce anything real or living. That's why he never develops, why it ends the way it does, why what is in the attic is what it is. It's all about the void between the Joker Movie and it's Audience. Truly.

I think the thing that a lot of authors and filmmakers need to understand, is that making a creative work that traditionally depends on a narrative exceptionally hard to digest does not always qualify the film or book as a “great work.”. Complexity does not equal genius, and it’s especially unintelligent when you back up negative opinions of the film with: “it isn’t meant to be understood.” Or “You need to watch it a few times to understand it.” Because personally, the best films and books I’ve consumed are creative works that can be interpreted on the first interaction, but still have secrets and foreshadowing on the second or third interactions that make it interesting. It’s what Hereditary did right. I was extremely disappointed with this film, and I felt very betrayed by Ari Aster. This was the kind of movie an overrated self-indulgent filmmaker who wanted to over intellectualize emotional turmoil, would make, not someone with such complex views of family dynamics and trauma.

I saw this movie with my girlfriend last night and her and I enjoyed it very much. As confusing as some of the things were we just assumed we would need another watch of it or see a breakdown video in order to understand it. The movie is gorgeous to look at and the cast did a fantastic job. There are movie that just mess people up for days like Requiem for a dream and Babylon where the point is to just overload the audience with emotion and heart of their creation and this is one of those movies to me because I can see the compassion and effort and I’m gonna need like a whole business week to mentally recovery from it.

I loved this movie so much... I get why it isn't everybody's thing and it speaks to an incredibly specific audience so if you aren't there it's just kind of eh 😂 it's so weird but it's a blast and there's so much going on but I love it

Seen it twice. First time I loved lots about it but was a little overwhelmed by it. It’s a whole lotta movie… and I was a little disappointed because I loved his first two movies instantly coming out of the theater! But after a week of sitting with it and seeing it again yesterday, it really worked it’s magic and I thought it was pretty fuckin phenomenal. Can’t stop thinking about it!
