- Join us for this Driver's Eye View trip from Derby to Preston Via Burton-on-Trent, Alrewas, Stafford, Crewe Basford Hall, Newton-le-Willows and Wigan North Western. This is the first of my new series of videos recording trips across the North on test trains which Network Rail use to judge the condition of their infrastructure. Filmed on 43274, with test coaches and 43257 trailing on 1Q47 PLPR1 infrastructure monitoring service on 24/10/2023.
So happy you're back, missed the amazing cab rides and content.
Your right
Absolutely fascinating video. Thanks so much!
That was absolutely fascinating. Thank you so much.... that journey around the Independent lines at Crewe was interminable but wonderful 🙂
Welcome back
bit late to the watch party. but great job with the video. nice camera setup and editing. interesting part of the network. interesting diagram on a typical wet British day!
Thank you Ben for a really enjoyable video. Lovely cab ride. So, the Ribble Viaduct is in a bad way.
Demolition Derby and there has to be a Tamworth Fast I mean really fast
Promo SM 💔
The Ribble Viaduct is a disgrace, it is a grade 2 listed building but the intention seems to be to allow it to rust into the river. Such neglect should not be allowed.
deferred maintenance is how austerity manifests itself on the railway's
They wasted so much money on HS2 that they could not be bothered to maintain existing lines - Network Rail is a disgrace, the trade unions are also too powerful
@@michaeljohndennis2231 are you under the impression that somehow the unions want less works done on the railway, and would prefer it rot than to have jobs?
@@michaeljohndennis2231 False. HS2 has been funded by borrowing specifically for HS2.
They didn't take money out of other pots to pay for it, which also means that cancelling Phase 2 didn't make money available for other purposes.
I imagine the North Union bridge will end up being declared unsafe and simply being demolished ( see Tramroad bridge, Southport rly School Lane Bridge and so on) - there are a lot of cast iron plate track beds over the Ribble and I cant imagine any of them being in rude health any more
Happy to see another trip from you - I'd never seen the Liverpool independent line, so something new and great! Even more of a thrill was the Claymills crossing at 13 minutes in - the Victorian building on the left is the Claymills Pumping Station that I'm part of the team restoring and running - and the car behind the motorbike at the crossing gate is mine!
Just read your comment and the other one about the storm and floods and realised I was around at the time having just got home from the Nuneham viaduct project ! The guy on the blue motorbike at claymills is me 😎 I remember wishing I'd took a snap of the test train not knowing it took one of us 😂 small world eh ?
This is an amazing video, so precise and clear and I so love the scenery around the Derbyshire/Staffordshire border as it was well known to me in my rambling days in the early seventies with the CHA in Coventry. Another trip to savour and take in on wet rainy, windy and snowy afternoons in Atlantic Canada. Thank you for making my day Ben and keep up the hard earned good work you make in your productions for us avid railway buffs to enjoy.
Merci pour cette belle vidéo, je suis conducteur de tramways de Lille France, merci encore
Great video and what made it even better for some strange reason, not one advert.
I like these British train videos, because the rain is always different
You have a like and a new subscriber!
Really interesting routing and a first for me was transiting the Liverpool Independent lines through Crewe.
Good (timely) location captions, too.
Great job! I look forward to the next one…!
Best wishes from a retired S&T man (1977 - 2018).
I was that boy at Warrington bank quay at the end of platform 4 thanks for the tones mate
Thanks for this Ben, good to see you back. Looking forward to all the nooks and crannies you are going to be taking us to. Cheers
nice to have you back brilliant video as usual thanks for time and effort
Great cab ride in my favorite train Class 43 Hst Thanks 🇩🇰🇩🇰
Ben nice to see you being able to post again. This is a very interesting video in that it both allows us to do a cab ride in an HST power car, but also see the aftereffects of that really bad storm tht eh UK had in the past week. The flooding is amazing and bad.
I’m amazed how quiet the cab is. Really enjoyed this. Thank you.
turn your sound up,
it aint that quiet
it is compared to a 66@@terry-wc9sw
43,s are very noisy inside the cab also outside the cab too. are@@tonyhogwood4737
Too quiet. Needs a mic in the "business room".
Uk environment getting worst and worst and after leadership change last year
Very enjoyable to watch and interesting, keep them coming A1*
As a ex Fireman/Driver I really enjoyed your video, it’s a different world out there with you lads now.Kind regards🚂🚂🚂
Been needing aa cabride fix after exhausting yours and Don Coffey's vids 😅
Great film..... especially liked the Crewe independent, Earlestown/Parkside/Lowton and down slow/down goods approaching Preston....thanks.
Great video. Loved the 'Ribble (falling to pieces) Viaduct' caption. Ace!
whats with the constant looping of the sound? spoils it for me
I'm guessing so we don't hear anything we're not supposed to, like radio transmissions etc, for legal reasons
That's only until Lichfield as there was another driver in the cab. It doesn't affect it for long and it's better than having silence or driver-driver waffle in the audio.
is the HST in the EPS or the general speed limit band? Great to see you back again Ben
Cheers! HSTs can do HST speeds or normal linespeeds, not EPS. EPS is pendo and voyager only. In this case the train is not an HST - it's a traditional loco hauled train with mk2 and mk1 derived rolling stock and so can only do 100mph and normal line speeds.
I like youtube because there are people like you. Thx
Excellent. Thanks for the hard work in producing the videos, much appreciated. Look forward to future videos.
Thank you for the video today, Ben. Always look forward to the ride. See you on the next. Cheers mates! 🇬🇧🙂👍🇺🇸
Hi Ben good to see you back I miss those HSTs
“Wake up babe, Ben is back”
Thank you, Ben. An excellent trip; and it was especially welcome to have a glimpse of the Crewe Independent Lines.
Ben that was an excellent video. Will watch the other videos that you are planning. Thanks
Sehr gut., ein schönes Video. Danke.
Great video.....being a local lad bit disconcerting to see the combination heading South from Derby initially given the destination, but all's well that ends well!!
Ben that was a fabulous video well done looking forward to seeing some more what a train Paul in Kent
43274 & 43257 due in Blackpool on friday i will video them as they pass Poulton-Le-Fylde on friday afternoon
You're back! How excellent 😁
At last!!!! Great to see you posting again, excellent videos.
Excellent, some nice rare track there too, and good to see the goods lines at Preston back in use.
Always look forward to a Ben Elias video.
Nice video Ben and nice too see my stomping ground at the green footbridge at Euxton Balshaw Lane Junction from the cab view
To think of all the bugs that hit the windscreen on all the trains, and vehicles, and yet the bugs keep coming...LOL
Ben I have often teavels fro Crew to Blackpool, but never seen a train running the rickety viaduct!
I find it hard to believe this is quieter than most trains today
Wow ! Great video, i especially love the noise and hearing those turbos spool up 😊 as another viewer has stated, im in the video at claymills crossing on my motorbike having just finished a greggs corn beef slice and heading off on an adventure. I remember wishing I'd got a snap of the test train as it passed, not knowing it got one of me 😂 subscribed !!!
Hi Ben glad to see uou back I really enjoyed this video and I will certainly be following the rest of the test train series you have fabulous
I saw this at Preston. So funny to see me on a vid
I was going to see the HST tour in London today, but this is a good way to spend my afternoon. Glad to see you uploading again.
First time I've seen anything use the Ribble Viaduct (love the description by the way). I've seen some of the forums refer to it as the Cassandra Crossing 😆
Fab video Ben. I took a photo of this working at Preston that day, think the video ends some 2 or so mins before I appeared lol!
Everybody moaned when the HST ousted the Deltics , but god, I miss these fantastic machines.
Excellent. I look forward to future videos. really interesting and great quality
Peter Simons. I cant find your reply but thank you. 👍
I drive for GWR but have always fancied doing the HST test train
Thanks Ben looking forward to future uploads ribble viaduct reminds me of cassandra crossing
Is Colas purchasing more Class 43s to replace the Class 37s?
Nice to see these flying machines doing 110mph plus on test trains still! pitty they still ain't in passenger use as there is still loads of left in them!!! Nice video 🥰
They are still in passenger use
In Central Trains days we signed via Castle Donington but not via Alrewas. Our diversions would not have fitted around the City Line service! Thanks for the look at the the back road.
Whilst I appreciate this is technically freight, was there a particular need for the paths to be routed via Helsby, Crewe sorting Yard and Earlestown?
Yes, those lines need to be recorded to make sure they're safe for trains.
Have you driven a train up the west highland line?? Think it stops at mallaig
A bit of a misnomer calling the Crewe Independent line a fast line when it has a pathetic 15mph limit😂
Ribble Viaduct (aka North Union Bridge) 1830s, I believe. Quite an engineering feat. A beautiful video. Thank you for sharing.
A really interesting video with a fantastic route. Looking forward to other videos in this series
Wow From my Local Station too Looking forward to this watching it Now
Am I missing something here? I thought all class 43's had been taken out of service some time ago.
Network Rail NMT..
Great to have you back Ben, I enjoyed that Thank's. Mike👍👍👍
Excellent Drivers Eye View this Fantastic watch
Nice to see you have made a come back.
Good to see you back, and thanks for a fab video.
Great video, thanks for taking the time to post.😊
Great video. I'm wondering: with the test trains, do they have particular speed limits to test? Or does this one count as an HST?
This train is restricted to 100mph due to the coaches in the formation being MK2s. The NMT can do HST speeds but is currently running at 10mph below line speed due to isolated brakes.
@@beneliastrains Nice, thanks Ben.
I understood that all short HST sets are limited in max speed since most of the braking power is the coaches, not the two locos, so only the full length sets can do 125. One video with a startling ending is the last HST Plymouth to PDN. Two cameras, one each loco cab = interesting views! After Newberry once in the main line, the speed increases dramatically! I think I've never seen scenery going past so fast(!) As it was the last train (and one of the two locos was in the pair in the record-braking exploit of 145mph) I think the driver just opened the taps for the last bit of the run! The result was he arrived at PDN 15 minutes EARLY so had to wait at the station throat till the main arrival platform could be cleared of an earlier train, for him to enter!
Filming from BOTH loco cabs gave added interest on the full length of that last very long GW HST journey. It IS a marathon to watch!
Surprised by the lack of main line traffic. Would have liked some maps during trip to see where we where, especially at junctions.
I’ve got Googlemaps open on my phone to follow. It’s very helpful.
I believe the construction work before the chord onto the main line at Litchfield was the HS2 underpass, that will now not be used.
That is indeed the HS2 underpass and it will still be used. It is just south of Handsacre where HS2 will join the WCML
Ah right. Thanks
Gracias Ben.
Great video
Not exactl;y the shortest route between DBY and PRE, but some interesting trackage covered. I'm curious to know why there are street lights on the 'Lichfield single'. They seem somewhat out of place.
Lovely weather, Ben! It doesn't always rain up here in the Northwest!
Nice one! I suspect while going fast fown the Main Line he wasn't getting anywhere near 220 in such an old loco...
Those HSTs did regularly reach 225 kph, so I imagine he would have been.
EDIT: saw that the coaches are based on Mk 2s so will be doing 160 kph/100 mph because of this, but the locos are more than capable
@@memediatekI was thinking they were 47's for some reason - Yeah 43's would definitely be able to go the line speed for sure!
At 31:33, there is someone taking photos trackside. Since the signaller must be aware, I assume they have permission. But shouldn’t they be wearing hi-vis in any case?
Excellent video Ben watched part 2 first doh! Wondered where the 321's ended up after leaving my local line. Lots of lines ive never been down on cab rid video's. Thank you for posting.
Flooding video 😅
Although the OHLE knitting is probably the way forward, it is good to see mainline running without it.
Those wipers were useless 😂
Hi there, I live in Nottingham so I am fairly close to Derby, I was wondering if there was a way to know when the class 43 about in the area? I would love to see one in operation since they are amazing. Thanks for this great video!
Gotta love the LSL Preserved GMT Class 142 Pacer on the high Level line (R) at 01:15.20 ❤
Welcome Back
2:19:00 I used to stand on the right to watch trains before the houses were built. A couple of times I saw some of the last 8 HST Power Cars built with APT-P test trains
Very good.
Good quality filming (with very clean windscreen). I really enjoyed watching this. Thank You for the upload.
The Ribble (falling to pieces) Viaduct reminded me of the film The Cassandra Crossing - and that's not a good thing! Great to have more videos from you Ben!
What type of engine are we 'travelling' on?! Why are so many people taking photographs of us?
What used to be called the track recorders , squirt out red paint on an area of twist etc . Good tools , and not seeing very many patrolmen extremely necessary..great video , must take some time to sew it together . Appreciated 👍🇬🇧
Love having these on whilst WFH in the background
Are you able to add a map (either live or intermittently) to show location ?
Fantastic video Ben, some of these unusual routings are very interesting, Crewe Independent lines and especially the one around Earlstown, by far freight traffic is the most interesting to watch, for two reasons mainly, one the slower speeds enables us to enjoy more of the rail infrastructure and secondly the unusual routings, can't wait for the next video.
Wouldn't it have been faster just to stay on the WCML and blast through Crewe station instead of taking that very slow diversion?
The train is testing the tracks on all the routes it travels down.
@@beneliastrains I was wondering what was meant by test train.
Such a shame about ribble viaduct. If they don’t get it sorted then there’s gonna be a disaster
