You might want to spin the chuck to check its runout before levelling.

So, to sweep in the indexing head, I see angle wise the concept, I understand you repeat the process for the other axis (your is keyed and you skipped this step) really what your saying is you need a reliable rod to do this. I have purchased HSS drill rod, but question the trueness (run out) of the rod. Any recommendations for getting a rod for the purpose of sweeping in an indexing head? Thanks Stu

I would use a large dowel pin or some turned ground and polished (TGP) rod. Another option would be linear shafting. It's straight, round, not too expensive, and hard on the outside. You can find it at McMaster Carr and a number of other places. You can salvage smaller diameters out of old printers too.

The problem with concentricity is because you seem to be a Cub's fan. The curse flows over to fans as well. Good video though...keep them coming. Go Cards!

@@chrisstephens6673 For me, it's the happy confluence of COVID and my midlife crisis. I find myself desperately wanting to do all the things I never got a chance to when I was younger, such as growing my hair out. I've also started to play the bass guitar, which is why I set up the dividing head. I was setting up to make some cool custom knobs. That video will be out eventually. I still have to finish them and then edit down the 20 hours of video to circa 10 to 15 minutes.

    • @StuartdeHaro

A little of both. I work in a maintenance machine shop at a university by day. We rebuild pumps mostly, with a fair amount of hydraulic work. Not much actual machining. Then I try to make projects I enjoy at home. That tends to get put aside so I can do jobs for other people though, like the universal joint shown in my last video. I also teach part time at my local community college, but COVID has really hurt enrollment. I didn't teach last semester because there weren't enough students and I'm not sure if the class will happen this semester either. What about you? What kind of things do you make?

Taft pierce Serfice grinder. I did this I just started this hobby about a year ago I’m in the final stages of setting up my 14‘ x 14‘ shop in the back of my house going to auctions and having a lot of fun. Did you ever consider doing an online class for beginners using a mill, wave and a surface grinder?

Not sure how technically it would work but I think it would be neat to set up my desktop in my shop and work on projects while you’re on the screen answering questions etc. there’s so much to learn but with some help it would really expedite things
