The Burbank Studios was formally NBC Studios where the tonight show was filmed. Folks would be lined up in front there every afternoon waiting to get in to see the show. I used to have my office close by - and I was born across the street at St Joe.s

It was so hard to get in the audience as a local living in Burbank, back in the late 80s/early 90s. Many a tour bus would get preferential treatment since they had the numbers to fill the seats.
Surprisingly, one Thanksgiving Carson was doing a show and there were no tour groups to cut in. Who would want to go on Thanksgiving? So it was free and clear to attend. Did the same when Leno was the host.

I grew up in Southern California and I have distinct memories of being at that Bobs Big Boy. My grandma loved that place. There was one closer to where we lived and we at least went once a month. I always got the kids hamburger and it had this yummy relish on it. It’s been at least 30 - 35 years since I’ve been to one. Very nostalgic. I will say this area near all the studios is your vibe for sure.

I would love to sit down at Bob’s Big Boy, one more time. Every time I was back in California, or even on the way, Bob’s was one of the places to stop and eat. That particular Bob’s you stopped at, I may have been there once as a youth. I had family in California at the time, and they liked to show us around. The fact that I was born in California, I still feel a connection there. Part of me would love to go back and live, while the other part is content to be here where I am.
Love the memories though. Thanks for sharing!

The last time i was in Burbank CA was way back in the summer of 1983. My parents and i went to Big Boy several times during our stay. My favorite meal was the chef salad.
We also went to the inaugural taping episodes of the syndicated Wheel of Fortune at the then NBC Studios.
I remember that car wash being very busy back then. Sad to see it now.
The biggest thing which i can't remember though is the name of the hotel we stayed at about a block away from both Big Boy and NBC. It was the place that Roy Rogers stayed at when he was in town. Anybody remember the name?
I was out there in both the summers of 1981 and 1983 with my parents. I have never been back but videos like this bring back a flood of memories.
    Thank you for this.

If you had B seating, it meant you might ir might not get seating depending on what remained. Was able to be there when Kenny Rogers was a guest. Knew someone who knew someone Always helps !! Were you ever able to see Johnny ?? Then we went home and watched the show. Enjoy Calif. once again. See ya next time. O C old gal . Be healthy, safe and happy.😎🌞

Adam, I really enjoyed this video. I've been going to that Bob's for over fifty years! It happens to be a necessary stop when either coming from or going to the Burbank Airport. Since I live way out in the West S F Valley, it's fortunate that Burbank airport is my favorite which means frequent visits to Bob's. 😁
Toluca Lake is actually one of L.A.'s 114 official neighborhoods, and not a city itself. Since the border between L. A. and Burbank is a few blocks West at Clybourn Ave., Bob's is technically in Burbank, although a lot of folks still consider that area as Toluca Lake.

  • @3hinesroad

The statue at Bob's Big Boy is a plaster figure of a chubby boy holding a tray with a double-decker burger aloft. The statue is inspired by a caricature of Richard Woodruff, a six-year-old boy who would help Bob Wian at Bob's Pantry in exchange for free burgers. When Wian called Woodruff "Big Boy", the name stuck and became the inspiration for the restaurant's signature dish and mascot. Warner Bros. animator Ben Washam sketched the caricature, which also inspired the company's logo. Large Big Boy statues are often displayed in front of Bob's Big Boy restaurants.

Some of the apartments and business around there look old and kinda run down but don't let it fool you, a studio apartment there costs more than a 2 bedroom does in most of the country and those old restaurants are filled with studio executives.

Wow, look at you. A shadow of your former self. 50% of the battle with the other 50% keeping it off! I think Sarah and John Conner stayed in your Tangerine room. That "Jeep-Truck thing" was an old early 70's Ford Bronco. Now a new Bronco takes its place at a 2000% price increase. Coincidentally, where that 1970 Buick/Oldsmobile was parked on the street by the old Christmas Vacation house location in hom'age to the powder blue 60's 'suicide door' Lincoln Continental in most of the outside shots.
"The Columbia Ranch Dwarf Houses in Burbank, Los Angeles County, are a fascinating piece of Southern California history. These charming homes, also known as “Midget Town,” “Midget Houses,” “Snow White Cottages,” or “Munchkin Houses,” were built between 1946 and 1951. They line Hollywood Way between Oak and Heffron in Burbank.
Here’s the backstory: Studio head Harry Cohn acquired the original 40-acre lot, known as the Columbia Ranch, at the end of 1934. Initially intended as a backlot for filming, these houses were not constructed as dressing rooms or offices. Instead, they were designed to be ordinary homes for normal people, each with no more than 900 square feet of space." Their present value is around $850,000.
WB Ranch is history and so sad, replaced by soundstages that look like an Amazon warehouse. No style, merely functional. WBD/ Warner Bros.-Discovery stocks have been stagnant since I last posted, around $8 a share. Lakeside Carwash to be replaced by condimoniums. Johnny Carson Park, "I did not know that." He made fun of "beautiful downtown Burbank" consistently and said to get there "You go to the Slosson cutoff and cut off you're slosson." Isn't the "Parks and Recreation" town hall actually Pasadena?
I guess you didn't film in the WB studios or you'd rather not repeat? All I see is Pee Wee on his bike.
I got all this from the Wisdom Tree. Without it I'd be the Scarecrow. Great video. Thanks.
    PS-Go visit Tom!

    Question about Hollywood sound stages!
Hollywood is full of studios, but why isn't there one big sound stage?
Stage 12 at universal is the largest outside of Europe, but its only half the size of the 007 stage at pinewood studios in the UK, the largest is in Germany. Stage 12 is the world's 3rd largest.
Not complaining about uk getting a lot of big films because of the 007 stage and it's size. Most of the star wars films were filmed in the UK anyway, some using 007 stage.
Do you think it would be worth, and if in the future, the studios will get together and build a large sound stage to rival the UK and German ones? Or universal could build one, sort of thing the Warner brothers ranch could have been used for, I expect the other studios would rent it out too

So cool seeing this area. That black building across from Milt & Edie’s? My son works up there in a post-production company. 👏😁🥰 I love Burbank, too. It’s like what Hollywood used to be.

That tree you showed the closeup of it's trunk . I think is a pepper tree. When I lived in Orange County, CA. years ago one of our neighbors had one in their front yard. And they have a unique smell to them. The soundstages that you showed are what's called a tilt up. They pour the concrete walls laying flat on the ground and then use a crane to stand them up. That's why you can clearly see two very heavy cranes in the shot.

Adam, I too absolutely love the Burbank area. Bob's is a must stop everytime I'm there, I love the old neighborhoods and neon signs. My dream neighborhood to live in is The Wonder Years neighborhood close by. If you haven't yet, you should try to stay at the Safari Inn one of these days- that one was in True Romance. :)

What bad timing! Just a few hours after the Bob's Big Boy footage was recorded,, a car plowed into the Veggie Grill diagonally across the street. The entire car made it into the dining area and left a huge hole to the right of the door on the Riverside Drive side!
Unfortunately the Veggie Grill was not featured here but you could see the small white building in the distance a few times for maybe a second or two.
As expected, the restaurant is now closed pending review of the structure integrity.
This video was released -after- the accident.
