One of the things I loved about the original trilogy Star Wars (though being too young to understand or articulate it) was the fact that not everything was immaculate and shiny; things were kind of shabby, kind of dingy, rough around the edges, outside of the Empire's Potemkin villages... it was a lived-in universe.
Yeah, the 90s EU was so dark and gritty. Even the names of the stuff from them screamed it. _Heir to the Empire_ _Dark Force Rising_ _The Last Command_ _Dark Forces_ _Shadows of the Empire_ _Etc._ I can't say anything about the OT that hasn't been said already, but in regards to all the EU that came out in the 90s, it had this post-apocalyptic feel to it. In my school, how big of a Star Wars fan you were was basically gauged by how much you knew the 90s EU. Anyone could answer stuff about something from the original movies, but only a "true fan" (keep in mind this is elementary school) knew the secret esoteric knowledge that was the EU. I'm not a prequel hater, but the prequels completely changed the atmosphere, for better or worse.
@@DrewPicklesTheDarkthis is so true. The OT has this kind of dark vibe to it. Not in a negative or horror way, but in this kind of "post-apocalyptic" feel you’ve described it.
Made even more exciting considering those books and comics were later enhanced further by the 2000’s Clone Wars Multimedia Project. For indtance, remember Captain Pellaeon in the Thrawn Trilogy mentioning he fought clone in the clone wars? In the Republic Comic Series, during the Siege of Saleucami arc, (SPOILERS), we get to see him fight CIS clones alongside Republic clones. Ot only did the 90s du give fans something to chew on in between George’s saga, but also set up a pretty interconnected and believable universe
Now a days I just feel proud of us fans from the 90’s that kept the flame of Star Wars glowing strong. For much of the time without hope of there ever being another movie. Keeping it warm for future generations.
Star Wars in the 90s be hittin different. So many memories with “Shadows of the Empire” wish I had a computer as a kid to play “Dark Forces” and “X-Wing Alliance”
Dark Forces is cool, but it's a bit bland. It was primarily just a Doom/Wolfenstein clone, but the story is sick and it started one of the greatest SW game series of all time...
87 here. There was a mystique around Star Wars in 95-98 that was really unique. The original films were reissued on THX and we got those on VHS and watched them endlessly. I was huge on the micro machines and model kits. I had friends who were reading the books that followed up on the original trilogy, and playing the shadows of the empire games, and though I wasn't as into that extended universe stuff, there was a mystery around it and around the larger universe. It was exciting thinking of the prequels and imagining what Coruscant might look like on film. When Phantom Menace finally came out, I was 12 and even at that age I was disappointed. It just didnt match the dark and mysterious vibe that the extended universe had produced in my mind. Ep3 finally got closer to the tone I had imagined, but by then the damage was done, the mystery was gone. I'll always enjoy those hazy memories of being a kid in the 90s dreaming of this universe. Sometimes dreams are best left unrealized.
The EU actually continued into the 2000s. There is plenty of content that is tied to the 90s EU, such as Outbound Flight being a prequel to the thrawn trilogy
I was born in 85, and I got to grow up loving Star Wars, getting excited about the resurgence, and then having my mind blown by the announcement of Phantom Menace, and this video REALLY brought me back there in the best of ways.
I was introduced to Star Wars at 11 yo when I saw A New Hope for the first time in theatres during the '97 Special Edition release, and then the other two films the following months. I was fucking blown away.
I can't believe the endorphin rush taking this ride created. I pushed my Reading level three grades just for the Thrawn Trilogy in 91. P.S. I must confess I too didn't have a problem with the re-releases or the prequals eso. since so many great stories were spun out in the books and comics. however, The Last Jedi has created a 3 generation existential crisis in my family. Long live the Legends that are dear to our hearts.
There were corresponding laserdiscs to the 80s VHS and Beta releases too. The 1993 box set is just notable for having been the best home video release of the trilogy up to that time.
i was born in 1990 and this resonates with us, we are a very small group of the fanbase, the kids who grew up with 90's star wars, but imo, were the best part of it. damn good video bruh
I was born in 84 and my bro in 88. I saw return of the jedi first in like first grade and I remember arguing about the color of Luke's lightsaber cause I didn't grasp the concept of sequels I thought I saw real star wars and my friend saw fake star wars. Lol. Star Wars in the 90s was also me and my bro dragging our mother to yard sales, flea markets, and comic shops to find the original star wars figures. Then Kenner released a new hope. Brand new star wars figures. We got them all. Then shadows of the empire and dash render. And his amazingly designed ship the outrider. Re-release of films in theater and vhs. Cause we has to see new scenes. The excellent star wars computer games. Rogue One on SEGA 32X. And then downloading quick time and the phantom menace trailer. Oh and weird al. Lol The 90s was the best time to grow up. And I'll have words with anyone who says otherwise. DARTH MAUL!!!
Apologies if anyone already said this, but “Boba Fett in the 90s” could be a whole video /topic unto itself. Who he was, how he was perceived, his video game appearances, the dark horse comics… like, there’s a REASON video shows Boba @ 6:43 talking about filling in the blanks lol. It damn he was so popular. Folks really filled in those blanks. And Lucas definitely took notice. I’d bet if Boba hadn’t been so popular in the 90s he and Jango wouldn’t have been included in episode 2.
This was beautiful man. I think we are around the same age. I had the same experience. 90s Star Wars, I’ll hold onto that time for the rest of my life.
The double lightsabre definitely had a big impact. I was kind of obsessed with it, honestly I think it was the part of that film that left the biggest imprint on my psyche. It's how episode one is indexed in my memory, like episode one = double sided lightsabre. That and pod racing, the two coolest things possible for a 9 year old boy at the time. We fell for the gimmick hook line and sinker lol.
This is a great summation of Star Wars in the '90s and was very close to my own experience. I, too, *only* had Return of the Jedi taped off TV (at least for about 3+ years), although I had seen A New Hope and Empire on TV and at friend's houses throughout the '80s, so I was still fairly familiar with the main story. Nevertheless, Jedi got re-watched *a lot* by me at 8-9 years old. I was 19 to 25 for the Prequel Trilogy, so I was fairly nuanced in my tastes, but I still loved the trilogy. I think The Phantom Menace is the weakest (aside from, yes, the Podrace and lightsaber duel), but it was so well fleshed-out by Expanded Universe content that the political side of the story has been redeemed over time, particularly by novels like Cloak of Deception and Darth Plagueis. Two little things that weren't touched on: Star Wars Insider and Star Wars Galaxy Magazine. Prior to me getting online in '97 (and even for several years afterward), these were the prime (and for awhile...only) source for Star Wars news about the prequels, games, books, and behind-the-scenes info. Obtaining a new issue of either one was generally the highlight of my entire week.
My elementary school best friend, who to this day is still my longest and closest friend, is the one who introduced me to Star Wars. When we met in 2nd grade, the closest I had seen to Star Wars was Spaceballs and Wrath of Khan. Thanks to him integrating Star Wars themes into our playground play and our early comicbook work (I should really revisit some of those ideas) I started looking out for Star Wars merchandise. My first actual experience was renting Super Return of the Jedi and trying DESPERATELY to get farther than Jabba's Palace. Lets just say, with a learning curve going from Super Mario World to Super Return of the Jedi, I was thrust into mastering platforming video games. I finally got to watch episode 4 at my dad's house a year later and thirsted for the others. To this day, while I can admit that Empire Strikes Back is the superior film of the three, Return of the Jedi is my favorite. (I also at some point saw that film about the kids stranded on Endor... that was interesting) The Hype Train that was the 90's ramp to Phantom Menace had me hooked and while I didn't notice them before, I can look past the flaws in that movie and enjoy it with my kids. I agree, the pod race is the best scene and the inspiration for my second favorite racing video game. The wait for Attack of the Clones game time for me to develop my other interests as far as media was concerned. I was a big fan of the Alien and Predator franchises, had gotten into Pokemon and Magic the Gathering, and was slowly getting primed for the release of the Lord of the Rings trilogy and Harry Potter.... which coincided with being introduced to Dungeons and Dragons. Where Attack of the Clones was too long waited for and felt meh on arrival, Revenge of the Sith was the nerd send off into my college years that I would never forget. I could rewatch Phantom Menace for nostalgia and pod racing, and I usually pass on Attack of the Clones... hut Revenge of the Sith is a movie I relish. With the new trilogy, I greatly enjoyed the Force Awakens when I saw it in theaters. While I can see the issues in the writing, the potential was there. Han's death was probably the worst part, only because the original cast didn't get to appear together on screen. Otherwise, to show the confidence to kill a fan favorite and have the writing support it was great. I haven't yet watched the Last Jedi... and I'm hesitant... but I may bite the bullet and check it out here soon.
Your childhood and Star Wars experiences are very eerily aligned with mine haha, we must be similar in age. The summer of 1999 was something else if you were a kid at that time 🔥
Such a great time. Before I was born, the franchise wasn’t even near its peak. So much lore and characters were being introduced and skowly but surely, the buildup to the Empire’s final defeat and the full restoration of the Jedi Order feels powerful to this day You should cover star wars in the 2000s. The clone wars multumedia project needs more love (and when you do cover the thrawn trilogy, plz discuss the NJO since it began in the 90s also) Also no disrespect your prequel takes aged a little bad lmao considering……….what has happened, especially with tros
Great video..I'm 41 now and i was a kid growing up with the great lucasarts games to and going to the special edition in theaters with my dad and playing the star wars main theme on my baritone horn in middle school. My dad would pass away in the year of the release of the phantom menace but we had good times up till then and I still wonder what my dad would have thought of the prequels
if it weren't for shadows of the empire on my n64 due to my dad alongside with jedi knight dark forces 2 i probably wouldn't have become a huge starwars fan like i am now. it's a shame that games these days just aren't as memorable and those classics
Low key starwars from 2010-2014 was awesome too. Hasbro had a ton of those massive playsets and toys R us was packed with original trilogy stuff. Then the sequels happened, toys got uber expensive, and toys R us collapsed. Talk about the calm before the storm.
Fr. I still remember the commercials for the old lightsabers. Especially the one that you'd press the button and it would extend out instead of just flicking it out. I forget the name of them tho. Plus the spinning grievous sabers that they reused the concept for the inquisitors.
Always loved the Original Trilogy. I begged my mom to rent the bonus disc from the original DVD release of A New Hope off of Netflix so I could see how it originally looked. I also had the tape for it, but it was completely destroyed when I tried to put it in the VCR.
I tried to read that Steve perry novel recently. Very basic and juvenile from my perspective. However, that shadows of the empire N64 game score blew my socks off in 1996 having been raised on 8bit
I agree about the novel. I enjoyed it at the time, but on subsequent readthroughs the prose and story-structure is very meh. And let's not even get into the ickiness of Leia being seduced by Xizor. The overall story is fun, and I liked that it was a multimedia experience, but I think the comic book version has aged a lot better and befits the medium much better.
As a kid my Micro Machines Death Star that folded out into Tattooine was my prized possession... the flipover charred remains at the Lars Homestead was a great touch 👌
I grew up with the infamous special edition, micro machines action fleet, and then as the 2000's began the legos hit. I had the 98 X Wing trilogy CDs, Tie Fighter is still one of my favorite games. Star Wars had such a different vibe back then.
Now I know why when people saw Star Wars Episode 1 back in 1999 they already knew that Anakin was Darth Vader...because of the shadow of him in the movie’s first theatrical poster.
I loved the prequels when they came out and still do. Similar 90s kid born in the late 80s I was obsessed with LOTR and Star Wars in high school. My elementary and middle school star was obsession was the Star Wars ccg
It indeed was, although TIE Fighter refined the formula so well that it made retroactive playthroughs of X-wing seem a little clunky in comparison. Nevertheless, I still have enjoyed revisiting it over the years. "Using designated target!"
13:20 I respect you so much for saying that. All fans our age or older tend to do these days is say the whole thing is ruined for them. Which means to me that they never really enjoyed it the way do on the first place.
lol, that online trailer experience was perfectly re-created here. The only thing that could've made it even more accurate was for the video window to be small. Also, agreed that as much as they may mess with the movies, they can't take away the experiences we had with the originals.
Omg I've never been this early on a video before, but when I saw "Star Wars in the 90's" I clicked right off the live stream I was watching so fast.. TYFS!! You made my night! P.S... First! Lmfao.. I've never been able to do that before... Kind of anti-climactic 😂😂😂✌
I remember when it was re-released on THX it was a big deal (i'm still bitter that they changed the Ewok song tho), and one of the most 90s songs EVER, lyrics-wise, is "Nothing's Feeling New" by Republica, and the lyrics are all about stuff that was popular at that time in the 90s, and one of the lyrics is "got the widescreen star wars trilogy". bc that was a big deal at the time. Also "Got ISDN oh baby" is my favorite lyric from that song. lmao. I just remember bragging to my friends that I had an ISDN connection, so my internet was faster than theirs. but i digress
Star Wars will always be my friends and I discussing Lightsabre forms, and x-wings exploded for mechanical reference in the illustrated encyclopedia. It'll be in us pretending to be bounty hunters on the playground, flying the Millenium Eagle and the Slave Two. There's nothing Lucasfilm or Disney can do to ruin that. It exists within me.
Hey after my oldest daughter watched nearly every Star Wars fan I can say it came different then I thought - she loves the OT films way more then the others. She loves Rey but didn’t follow the films really, the same can be said about episode I and II. Rewatching the sequels was a pain and somehow also Episode I. I see why kids loved them back in the days but objectively the OT is way better.
It is impressive how they managed to make it cool again in the mid-90s. By the late 80s & early 90s, many people saw it as a fad that was long past its glory days. It wasn't cool to enjoy it.
Of course, once I got the micro machine, Star Wars ships and some of the play sets, I also got some Star Trek ships and that actually inspired crossover adventure idea. I’m sure people have different opinion about that once you read it, but I want you to think about it how it could’ve been even better and cooler stories could’ve come from that.. again just think about it
Good video, but took a huge detour at the end which had nothing to do with being a Star Wars fan in the 90’s, which I was watching to escape back to to forget what it is like to be a Star Wars fan in the ot-20’s.
This has to be said. The original trilogy was great and so was the expanded universe. The prequels were somewhat okay, but Disney is putting out garbage.
Bro, you get me. This is exactly how I feel. The 90s was the pinnacle of Star Wars. Episode 1 was the beginning of the end :( Shadows of the Empire is the best story and time period in Star Wars hands down
I'm 26 and I love the prequels, including Phantom Menace. It is a bit corny, but it's a lot of fun. That's more than I can say for the prequels. 😑😑😑 We need more Obi-Wan Wan. Rey is a crap character.
The prequels always were good, I loved when I was a kid and still love it, most people thinks it too, just look at the sales from l, ll and lll, all of them sold during all films, the argument they always say is that nostalgia is getting in the way and in the future kids will like the disney movies, but if you look at their sales of these films, only the first one sold, the others had lower audience and was not as good as the sales from all films of the prequels
I have an unpopular view that the prequels should have been longer and more expansive like Lord of the Rings. There’s some good stuff on the cutting room floor which could have saved their reputation.
My Fondest Memory of Phantom Menace Episode 1 was walking out of the theater on Premire Night. Having (To Say the Lesast) CONFUSED Feelings about it, until I saw a Grown Adult. Dressed in a perfect replica of Jedi Robes. Holding a Green Lightsaber, and a Film Accurate Yoda Doll, CRYING To Himself, and repeating "It was a Good Movie, it was a Good Movie". I stopped, waited until that person was far enough away they wouldn't hear Me LAUGHING MY ASS OFF! I wished them well and walked off Fondly Remmebering the 3 OG Star Wars Movie. And I never looked back.
Seeing The Phantom Menace was extremely disappointing. It was 3 generations: my dad (boomer), me (Gen-x), and 10 year old little brother (millennial). And we ALL left the theater CONFUSED by the movie and NONE of us had the desire to go see it again. It was a STRANGE film, especially for lifelong Star Wars fans. It lacked the spirit of the OT and felt more like a "Wikipedia entry" trying to go back and explain everything. The CGI was atrocious and Jar Jar ruined every frame he was in. It's the year 2024 and that film STILL lives in a strange strange infamy.

Also no disrespect your prequel takes aged a little bad lmao considering……….what has happened, especially with tros
It's so hard to explain how impressive Shadows of the Empire was when it came out. I had never played a game that felt as cinematic.
@the90skid dark forces 2 even had live action cinematics. I'm not sure if there's ever been another star wars game with those.
Star wars from 2002-2007 was better tho
Always loved the Original Trilogy. I begged my mom to rent the bonus disc from the original DVD release of A New Hope off of Netflix so I could see how it originally looked. I also had the tape for it, but it was completely destroyed when I tried to put it in the VCR.
diehard OT zealot here. Disney is the Empire. OT & original EU lovers are the Rebels 🫡💯✨
I respect and applaud your material, brother ❤
Agreed, long live the eu
The last few minutes got to me 💧👏👏👏 Thank you for saying that nothing anyone could do to SW could change the memorys. 👍
Bizarrely similar experience here: grew up in the 90s, watched ROTJ first on VHS!
It feels good to know I wasn't the only one!
I get ya, man. Same. Thx for bringing memories back. :)
I had a ton of of power of the force action figures and ships, it’s my fondest memory of my childhood.
When you showed Darth Mauls duel saber, I blurted out a resounding "Fuck Yeah"...great video!
Now I know why when people saw Star Wars Episode 1 back in 1999 they already knew that Anakin was Darth Vader...because of the shadow of him in the movie’s first theatrical poster.
Abd they literally drop his name in Return of the Jedi too.
It was never a secret. Word of mouth was that the prequels were the story of Vader
Anakin, Obi-Wan and Padme 13:04
Yeah I was like..? The fuck 😂padme is awesome
I loved the prequels when they came out and still do. Similar 90s kid born in the late 80s I was obsessed with LOTR and Star Wars in high school.
My elementary and middle school star was obsession was the Star Wars ccg
I miss the 90s...
1996-1999 was the sweet spot! ✅️
Star Wars X-Wing was one of the coolest games ever made
It indeed was, although TIE Fighter refined the formula so well that it made retroactive playthroughs of X-wing seem a little clunky in comparison. Nevertheless, I still have enjoyed revisiting it over the years. "Using designated target!"
i remember watching the trailer for the phantom menace on dial up, its my first memory of star wars, i was 1
*standing ovation*
13:04 Jar Jar is the third everyone knows that, every kid looked up to that amazing character
Especially consdeiring the commentary george made about unintelligent life through him
worth the re-upload
Great video!
Dash Rendar was modeled after Kevin Costner, right?
That ending bro... I feel you!
Such a vibe
Ah yes, the 90's, when many of us Millennials became Star Wars fans.
I thought so too, Luke sounding like the emperor…it’s poetry, it rhymes
Omg I've never been this early on a video before, but when I saw "Star Wars in the 90's" I clicked right off the live stream I was watching so fast.. TYFS!! You made my night!
P.S... First! Lmfao.. I've never been able to do that before... Kind of anti-climactic 😂😂😂✌
Well shoot, I'm glad I could make your night!
By any chance, does anyone know the name of the music that plays during the first 2-3 minutes? It sounds like a remix of some kind.
I started cheering as soon as i hear the weird all music lol 😂
Can anyone tell me what that bespin lofi sounding remix is that’s playing in the beginning of this? It’s a bop and i can’t find it anywhere online.
It's from the Far, Far Away album. Here is a link my friend: farfarawayalbum.bandcamp.com/releases
Thanks so much and great video!!! Hope we see canonization of shadows soon 😁
What is the music here? I need to know
Star Wars will always be my friends and I discussing Lightsabre forms, and x-wings exploded for mechanical reference in the illustrated encyclopedia.
It'll be in us pretending to be bounty hunters on the playground, flying the Millenium Eagle and the Slave Two.
There's nothing Lucasfilm or Disney can do to ruin that. It exists within me.
I was born in the 2000s but this gives me nots of nostalgia because Star Wars is a massive part of my childhood
That's honestly my favorite thing about Star Wars...it connects people of all ages.
Yeah exactly. You can be born in any generation and it can still be a massive part of your childhood
12:54 My kids are 6 and 4 and they look up to Han, Luke, and Leia. They don’t even know who Poe, Finn, and Rae are.
That's the way to do it!
I see why kids loved them back in the days but objectively the OT is way better.
you bought me putting the weird al song fot the phantom menace
It is impressive how they managed to make it cool again in the mid-90s. By the late 80s & early 90s, many people saw it as a fad that was long past its glory days. It wasn't cool to enjoy it.
It's so hard to imagine that time now that Star Wars is being milked so effing hard.
Can you re-upload your 90s tv show intros video? That was a pretty awesome nostalgia fix
I disagree
Bro, you get me. This is exactly how I feel. The 90s was the pinnacle of Star Wars. Episode 1 was the beginning of the end :( Shadows of the Empire is the best story and time period in Star Wars hands down
I'm 26 and I love the prequels, including Phantom Menace. It is a bit corny, but it's a lot of fun. That's more than I can say for the prequels. 😑😑😑 We need more Obi-Wan Wan. Rey is a crap character.
Wait? christian haydensen was added before the phantom menace?
No lol, he was added way later
@Find_Fresno_Nightcrawler oh, ok. This guy made me believe that.
When someone was in a very famous tv show
your funny i subscribed
The prequels always were good, I loved when I was a kid and still love it, most people thinks it too, just look at the sales from l, ll and lll, all of them sold during all films, the argument they always say is that nostalgia is getting in the way and in the future kids will like the disney movies, but if you look at their sales of these films, only the first one sold, the others had lower audience and was not as good as the sales from all films of the prequels
I have an unpopular view that the prequels should have been longer and more expansive like Lord of the Rings. There’s some good stuff on the cutting room floor which could have saved their reputation.
I love the original trilogy and the prequel trilogy. I LOVE episode II and III.
You forgot the star wars game for the sega 32x in 1994
Damn, made me cry a little at the end there (Y)
That entire decade with no hope of a future film was infinitely better than the current state of star wars
My dad got me into Star Wars when I was a kid. Hurt his and my mom's wallets pretty bad.
shadows of the empire is still the best star wars adventure game ever made
wait how old are you
The Star Wars of the '90's. Just before the dark times. Before the Prequels. Before the Sequels.
100X better than it is the last 10 years EASILY
We had video games for one xD that alone is good stuff, Even now so GO TRY EM OUT!
Still have no problems with VHS/DVD special editions. Blue ray on the other hand. wtf happened legit WTF happened
born in 94 loved all star wars until episode 7 that was boring to me and everything after that sucked
Heir To The Empire is the real episode 7, so dont worry
The Prequels WERE disappointing. There was just something fundamentally lacking.
Sorry but the music was so distracting in this video :(
I'm sorry! Was the music too loud, or was the beat itself distracting?
A Star Destroyer would obliterate the enterprise. Come at me
The sequels were an inside job!
hi
i love episode 1 Damn it!!!
