The problem as I see it with starting your own packing plant is that the FDA makes it so hard to do that because politicians and bureaucrats are in JBS, Smithfield, and Tyson's pocketbooks! And, if you do get one started, you are continually being undercut by the big packers to make you go out of business. The other problem is that nobody wants one "in their backyard" because they don't want to deal with the smell or the issues with the labor pool. Hell, the head of Poet actually spent 4 million dollars to try and block one that's some farmers were going to put up by Sioux Falls because he thought it was too close to his mansion.

Man I could bore a lot of people ranting about profit worship destroying the country our grandfathers built. I get real dark too. But I found local guys raising beef and pork using local butchers and stopped buying from the monopolies. It’s not much but it’s a start.

Just got to catch up with the latest episode! Great talk fellas! Got to thinking about some of what you were saying about competition so I went to chat gpt and asked if this ….. Building a pig processing plant in central Iowa with a high level of automation involves several key considerations, including initial capital investment, operating costs, and the market price of pork. Let’s break down the process and estimate the costs:
    1. Initial Capital Investment:
    • Land and Construction: The cost will vary based on location and the size of the facility. A typical processing plant may require around 50-100 acres, depending on scale. Land costs in Iowa can range from $5,000 to $15,000 per acre. Construction costs can vary significantly but could range from $10 million to $50 million for a fully automated facility.
    • Equipment: Automated equipment, including slaughtering, cutting, packaging, and waste management systems, could cost between $10 million and $30 million, depending on the level of automation and scale.
    • Technology and Infrastructure: This includes IT systems, refrigeration, waste treatment, and utilities. Costs could range from $5 million to $15 million.
Total Initial Investment Estimate: $25 million to $95 million.
    2. Operating Costs:
    • Labor: Even with high automation, skilled technicians, engineers, and administrative staff are needed. Annual labor costs could range from $1 million to $5 million.
    • Maintenance and Utilities: These costs include regular maintenance of equipment, energy, water, and waste management. Annual costs could range from $2 million to $8 million.
    • Raw Material (Pigs): The cost of purchasing pigs depends on the market price. As of recent data, live hog prices are around $0.60 to $0.80 per pound. For a plant processing 1,000 hogs per day (average weight 280 lbs), this translates to approximately $168,000 to $224,000 daily, or $60 million to $80 million annually.
    • Other Costs: Packaging, transportation, and other miscellaneous expenses could add another $1 million to $3 million annually.
Total Annual Operating Costs Estimate: $64 million to $96 million.
    3. Cost of Production:
    • Per Pound Cost: Considering the initial investment, operating costs, and a reasonable return on investment, the production cost per pound of pork could be estimated. Assuming the plant processes 300,000 pigs annually (with an average yield of 150 lbs of meat per pig), the total production would be approximately 45 million pounds of pork per year.
    Estimated Production Cost per Pound:
    • Low Estimate: $64 million / 45 million lbs = $1.42 per lb
    • High Estimate: $96 million / 45 million lbs = $2.13 per lb
    4. Comparison to Current Prices:
    • As of recent data, the wholesale price of pork can range from $1.50 to $3.00 per pound, depending on the cut and market conditions. The retail price is generally higher, often ranging from $3.00 to $5.00 per pound or more.
    Conclusion:
The cost of producing pork in a highly automated processing plant in central Iowa appears to be competitive with current wholesale prices. However, this estimate is highly sensitive to market conditions, the level of automation, and scale. The initial capital investment is significant, but the efficiency gained through automation could result in lower operating costs and a competitive price point for locally produced pork.
Would you like a more detailed breakdown or additional considerations for specific automation technologies? ……
Asked it to estimate the cost of a new hog processing plant in central Iowa and estimate a cost to produce at current prices and that is what it gave me back. How did it do on costs? Just curious! Keep up the quality content!

Grew up on a small farm and loved the local farming community. The money has been stolen from the small farmer for decades through horrible government regulations and lack of a backbone. Dudes are paying $1.25 for a can of corn but complain about $15 for a pound of steak that has probably 20 cans of corn in it.

I fail to see how you can talk about economic issues related to farming, etc. when you haven't even researched how good Trump was for farmers in 2017-2020. How good was he for the economy overall? PIss and moan about COVID? Trump was President. Kudos to Trump for Operation Warp Speed that developed MRNA vaccines that saved millions of lives. Have they given people horrible side effects or death? If that were true Russia and China would tell you about it considering they did not use MRNA vaccines but developed their own vaccines.
