Actually J , that watch has the PP seal, an even higher standard than the Geneva seal. The Geneva seal , according to what I've read, pertains more to the movement. Patek , I believe around 2012, left the Geneva seal behind and made their own seal PP which reflects a quality standard higher than the Geneva seal. The PP seal also takes into account the quality and finish of the case, clasp, overall asthetics, and even the quality of material used for the strap. A full account of the whole watch. Pretty cool actually. Thanks J, another great vid.
Polar Roller You are absolutely right! I misspoke. I thought I was filming an older watch than I was and I completely missed that seal while I was talking. I didn't realize it until I posted the video. Thanks for explaining that.
The Skwallee has the CC seal on it. CC stands for Cheap Chinese.
Since 2012, I believe, the Geneva seal also covers the case. Likely a response to Patek's establishing its own standards.
its all marketing bullshit, the finishing is the same since the geneva seal era
the 5396 is in my view the perfect dress watch money can buy today (I have the white gold). Perfect combination of dial proportions and case dimensions. Having the date windows instead of wheels makes the dial looks cleaner IMO. It pays homage to the great vintage 3448, 2497 perpetual cals which are astronomical in price on auctions and extremely rare not to mention servicing costs of these vintage calibers. While still pricey 5396 is a great way to get the look, get the Patek quality and a modern and tried/tested automatic caliber with all the modern advancements. Having mine for 3+ yrs now it's a joy to put on every time.
Patek Philippe has certainly mastered the presentation of an annual calendar. The layout, sizing, spacing, etc. is pretty much perfect.
Thank you for reaching out and bringing in such an exquisite brand in PP for us to learn and enjoy together. You and your channel are well respected in the watch community. Thanks again!
Thank you Dylan, I really appreciate that!
+J. ANTHONY The Archieluxury Channel brought me here.
Beautiful piece J., and another amazing review. This is one of those that I can fully appreciate the presence, engineering and workmanship involved, while never expecting to actually own one. Thanks for the providing your unique views and insights.
Great to see you will partner with Bernard Watches. I consider that an endorsement of them and look forward to seeing the variety and top level quality that they seem to offer. Great review!
Truly spectacular, though it's something I could never hope to own I appreciate the craftsmanship and horological excellence.
oh wow. Lucky man J.!! what a beautiful piece. congrats on another great review, this must have been an amazing experience doing this video.
Thanks sir as far as dress watches go it's pretty much "bambino" for me. But it's alway fun to see the best of best! This one is truly a work of art.
That watch is perfection in the form of a time piece. Thank you for sharing it.
I have yet to see a video or photo that does this watch justice- thanks for the review
I just can't swoon over Parteks or want one, but another great informative presentation by JA Anthony.
Thank you for bringing this content to us. It is a very beautiful watch to share with the many of us who could never own such a unique piece. Great content. Well presented.
Uh... wow. This video was a nice surprise. Very different from the usual watches you review. Very nice surprise. Keep up the good work. 12,000 subscribers are around the corner.
Another awesome video. Congrats to the lucky person who bought that great watch! Thanks for the video's. keep them coming.
Beautiful ! Thank you for showing it to us, Anthony 👌🙏 Cheers
There is something special with an annual calendar moonphase. I will probably never own a PP Annual Calendar but one of my grail watches is the JLC Moonphase with or without the annual calendar.
Great video as always!
Regards
GAW
One minor correction, is not the Patek Philippe symbol. Is the Order of Calatrava cross.
That was a really nice opening dude and great review. quite a spectacular watch!
excellent timepiece! thanks again for another great show of this watch !
Great review as always and choice of music, great job
The Patek Philippe Annual Calendar 5396R is a very beautiful watch. the dial is beautiful and the calendar complication well place in the dial. The display case back allow us to see the gorgeous movement with the beautiful gold rotor. the Patek Philippe 5365R is a masterpiece of art. I think the Patek Philippe Calendar 5396R is a watch for corporation CEOs and old money shareholders.
A truly spectacular piece. Someday I want to own one of these watches, but they aren't exactly cheap ;)
nice to see you diversifying your watch coverage. nice video dude.
Timeless style. Absolutely gorgeous
I think that it's a beautiful, classic watch. Glad to have seen it talked about.
thanks for another excellent video!
would you consider a video on upgrading watch bands of lower cost watches to a higher end type?
thank you
PP!!!! now thats a brand to behold.!!!
Awesome review!
Nice piece J, but out of reach for most of us......it is great to peruse through theses though.occasionally
and hear about people that have a Seiko padi in their collection along with a JLC, PP, or Royal oak etc, and appreciate all of them, like YOU of coarse
This is not under the Geneva seal. It's the Patek Philippe Seal as evidenced by the PP stamp on the movement bridge.
Absolutely stunning.
an amazing piece. great piece and review. cheers
This watch is a beauty but way too expensive for me!
Just wondering, what do you think about Citizen Eco Drive watches? Besides the Promaster, none of the other citizen watches get any love around here. Is it just because they're not mechanical?
The workmanship IS actually second to the likes of at least A. Lange & Söhne, Philippe Dufour. The finishing is absolutely excellent, but it is surpassed by a few brands.
Hi:
I haven't commented too much lately. The Satie is a beautiful choice for opening music. However, Armand the Watch Guy had the same piece for his opening music for a while. Not that that really matters. I think that particular song is well suited to a thoughtful watch review.
As for the Patek, maybe some day I'll understand why people like them. In the meantime, I'd put that money in the bank to save for the new Alpine A110 that is coming. Haha.
--Michael
Ah, the Alpine, now there would be a purchase of passion. I support that completely!!!
I have 0 idea about watches. Just started research and learning more about them. A general question. I recently subscribed to your channel and I don't see any mention of Tissot watches (The Swatch Group Brand). Any reason for this? Or have I missed any video reviewing this brand?
V Avinash shitters
such a good review. watches it so many times!
beautiful watch, and exceptionally beautiful case... but I never liked the design of the date aperture on these... has to be a better way to incorporate the date into the dial design and flow. (I'm fine with the Day/Month windows.. but that date window breaks the aesthetic flow, assaults the elegance of the piece)
Is it yellow gold? Usually references with an R designation are rose gold
I don't like most pp prefer jlc. But i do love this and the perps. Great video
Great pick!
Love this piece as well but I prefer the one with Arabic numerals ;)
An amazing piece anyway!
Thank you. Absolutely stunning.
Eric Satie in the background, great choice!
Great video. Well done.
I'm not a big fan of yellow gold watches but this one is quite beautiful. Great review.
Can anyone tell me what's the music at the beginning? It's beautiful. Thanks
J. Keep borrowing pieces! Great show.
Please review a Fortis, preferably their B-42.
Awesome watch J.!
this is breathtaking
She's amazing.Sweat! I like the way it looks fresh and clean. To Me It doesn't look like an old man's watch like so many of the Omega and Rolex's do.
Sorry, but the 5396 does not merit the gravitas of the brand name it carries. The bezel is too wide, the hands too thick, the font too progressive. For my money, I'd pick the ALS Saxonia Annual Calendar.
It's soooo ugly
This is a great watch but I prefer the 5205R which is much easier to read.
What about this makes it worth almost twice as much as a JLC Master Ultra Thin?
The level of fit and finish (5:00), how the components are made and the watch assembled, differences in movement specifications, etc.
Fine piece of workmanship, anyone with some kind of skill will find it beautiful as I did.
Beautiful watch, love pointy hands. 😊
Nice watch, but given the price, I would much rather have a Jaeger LeCoultre Master Calendar.
Hi there' the look of this watch doesn't do it for me. The back however now that's something else!!!!
This has everything I like in a dress watch - I think the moonphase is the perfectly appropriate extra touch for this style of watch, although I do like the less complicated PPs in this style as well. My only minor criticism would be that the hands obscure the moonphase slightly, but who cares. It was obvious that you genuinely enjoyed this piece. I couldn't help remembering that you specifically referenced these in an earlier video - when you made your 'why I sold my Rolexes' video and people were dissing you and saying it was because you were broke, you mentioned that you could afford a PP with an annual calendar if you wanted. Think you'll pick one up at some point? Or is it something that you appreciate, but wouldn't actually buy?
Thank you as always. At this point in my life I don't think I'd wear a piece like this enough to buy one. That, and there are too many cars out there for similar money that are tempting. I do have a weakness for a Lange at this point. If I ever pick one up I think it will be later in my life when I go down to a one or two watch collection and I want one great dress watch.
That's pretty much how I feel too, with the only difference being that I have no interest in cars (although I like most other transportation-related subjects), so the competing interest would be other, lower-priced watches instead - although the watch/car relationship phenomenon does fascinate me as a watch collector. It's something I'd really like to see hard data on - the actual specific extent to which unusual interest in watches correlates with high interest in cars, because it's obviously a thing.
It's not so much that I would be interested in the numbers on either set of outliers in a study like that - the unusually car-disinterested people like me, or the people immersed in things automotive from an early age, like you. It's more that I would want to see the extent to which the average guy, with no initial significant predispositions either way, is likely to take up an unusual interest in both if he ends up caring about either, and why.
I wouldn't be surprised if cars are driving (haha) that phenomenon in most cases - seems to me that the standard progression could be: cars are a masculine thing, most guys initially care about them at least a little bit for that reason, they acquire some kind of taste for things mechanical as a result, and interest in (at least mechanical) watches follows, but who knows?
An amazing review
It's rose gold not yellow gold and the strap is croc not lizard.
Simply gorgeous.
Watch price
It is 38.5mm and it does NOT have a geneva seal...
Tuesday was Mar 7.
Very nice!!
Pure class
8/21/2018... 14 miserable A holes disliked this video smh great vid J, thanks for sharing this beautiful time-piece with us.
When brands like Lange exist there is no reason to buy Patek.
the day of the week and month aperture too close to each other, looks a bit cross eyed?! I also don't like the date at 6 o clock
Would this be the most expensive watch reviewed on the channel?
Indeed it would be. This cost more than either the Daytona or President I've reviewed before by a fair margin.
I truly do not care about the complications. I would liked it with a simple dial, just a date window or no date. The moon face make it looks cheap.
There is a lot o myth in the Swiss watch industry Rolex being one of the worst offenders with their ridiculous prises I have a Japan orient star watch and the quality is outstanding and I would say it is the equal of a overhyped overpriced patek philippe and it keep absolutely superb time as good as the patek philippe ,
yes the patek philippe quality finish is superb but if you stripped all that finish away it would still be the same watch and time keeping
i like honest engineering were you can see that it has been hand crafted, you are paying for all that over the top finishing and it makes no difference to the watch as a time keeping
watch there is a lot of snobbery also in all of this
Why would someone buy this
looks like the orient watch))
My grail..

I know it's a Patek and I know it's supposed to be the best of the best. The thing is they make some ugly ass watches that are fragile as hell in my opinion! Not sure what anyone sees in this piece that would drive them to buy one!
fragile? Have you ever worn a Patek for an extended period of time?
Austin Tschirhart no but I have an AP royal oak Chrono.. which fucking broke and I sold it for a loss instead of getting raped on service. Patek makes some ugly ass watches and any JLC with the same style for a fraction of a fraction of the cost is a better buy.
Can't really argue with JLC. The only Patek that's really ever spoken to me is the original steel Nautilus.
Austin Tschirhart yea looks wise it's ok. I dunno I just used to think this trinity of pp vc and ap was the best and the reality is it's all hype. I think JLC is the best bang for buck horology.
ripperx444 yep! to fragile for my lifestyle by far!
i don't find this watch inspiring at all
Abhishek Srivastava Ya neither do I..Then again I don't wear dress watches ..😎
watch is really personal
and you may change your preference as you grow
There's a lot of hate for this watch and for good reason. This is one of the ugliest old man watches Patek make. Yellow gold as well, wow, who's living in the past. If you think these watches are forever have a look at some of the 80's and 90's Pateks and you'll realise very few watches stand the test of time and this model here has no future.
Ya sure, tell ya what, if you come across one just send it to me. I will cheerfully save you the embarrassment of owning it.
nob head
It’s rose gold he got it wrong
Stranded Alien u mad bro?
the brand or the watch do nothing for me, sorry.
