    I love how every single scene with Zuko and Iroh in this episode, Zuko is the one who looks like he’s behind bars

    Fun fact: The earth bender in the intro is Roku's Teacher Sud, who was the original concept for Aang's earth-bending mentor, but the creators realized it didn't really make sense to have it be an adult since everyone else was a young teen, so they revised to Toph and traded him to Roku who was closer in age.

    It's worldbuilding like this that really makes Avatar such a great show. Toph questioning whether friendships can really last a lifetime is answered not only in her friendship to the future avatar but in Rokus friendship with sozin that surpassed death to reach Aang and Zuko.

    I knew those 2 wouldn't understand, but being in the water doesn't mean they're safe, they're stupidly close to the volcano, that's why Roku was buying them time 🙄

    Zuko's time has come

  • @androkguz
    @androkguz Год назад +6

    The "Roku was your ancestor" reveal didn't age well for me. It feels like a wrong way to explain Zuko's goodness. Like that kind of stuff was basically hereditary.
    And Iroh telling him right now sounds in retrospect like his patience for Zuko is at his limit. Practically recurring to cheaper manipulation. And he knew all along of this so it's as if in the earth kingdom he thought "nah, he's going to be good. Don't need to tell him about Roku. He needs to make decision for himself"

    • @Dell-ol6hb
      @Dell-ol6hb Год назад +26

      I think that's the wrong way of looking at it, Azula also has the same great grandparents as Zuko and yet she doesn't have that same "goodness" in her as Zuko so it's not as if it's hereditary it's more just symbolic of the warring forces within Zuko that he is dealing with. It represents the same thing as the two dragons in his dreams, the struggle between what is expected of him as a member of the Fire Nation royal family and what he feels is right. Also the reason that Ozai married the granddaughter of Roku (Zuko and Azula's mother) is precisely because she is a descendant of the Avatar so it's basically bending eugenics, Azulon wanted the bloodline to inherit more fire bending power by combining the royal family's blood with the blood of an Avatar.

    • @jackofastora8962
      @jackofastora8962 9 месяцев назад +3

      Like the guy above said, it’s symbolic. The reason iroh never told him until now is simply because it would have only served to either make zuko feel terrible or resentful, telling him before the point in which he feels the most conflict between good and bad would only have a negative effect since he would act like you and assume “oh it must be hereditary! The avatars blood is making me have traitorous thoughts!”

      volcanic soil is the best soil in the world. This is probably why the fire nation was the most wealthy out of the four. Volcanic soils means superior farming. Volcanoes also means minerals of the purest forms.

    • @davidgonzalez0913
      @davidgonzalez0913 Год назад +5

      Rokus island takes inspiration from Pompeii. An island in Italy where the volcano on the island covered the whole island in Ash. There's actually human fossils for viewing over there

      plenty of villages and cities irl are build next to volcanoes

    • @Dell-ol6hb
      @Dell-ol6hb Год назад +2

      There's literally thousands of examples of settlements being built near volcanoes in the real world too, it's usually because the soils near a volcano are excellent for agriculture and is useful for construction, so that's more than reason enough for people to risk the chance of death should the volcano ever erupt

    Now that I rewatch, Sozin's character didn't really make sense. At least, it didn't make sense for him to help Roku out, and then betray him immediately after. He should have just never helped to begin with.
    I feel like they tried to parallel to hard with Zuko's evil to good vs. Sozin's good to evil. For example, in Zuko's journey, he almost switched to the good side in ba sing se, but turned against katara. However Zuko was still unsure that entire time. We don't get the motivations and feelings of Sozin. So Sozin helping Roku for no given reason then immediately turning against him isn't depicted well.

    • @Jjop017
      @Jjop017 Год назад +33

      I think his first instinct was to help his friend because despite it all Sozin still cared about Roku. He didn’t really think about it. Once he was on the island and he saw Roku was vulnerable it started clicking that if Roku died he could move on with his plans. That’s what makes this tale tragic. Sozin initially came to help as his first instinct, but let his ambition get the best of him and let Roku to die.

      @@Jjop017 sozin literally CHANGED his mind to HELP roku, then CHANGED his mind AGAIN to not help. you don't somehow not realize that letting roku die is beneficial during all that.
      the only reason sozin came is because the writers thought it would be more tragic that way, and you guys all believe it.
