I have no clue why they didn’t leave even 1 server of TBC for people to camp on. Even if like 10 people played it, it’d be such an easy win as far as “caring about the community” goes. Activision Blizzard is a multi billion dollar company, there’s no way the cost of running one server would even be a penny comparatively

    • @Menolith
      @Menolith 25 дней назад +13

"Too many wow versions" is a real problem they have. Between Cataclysm era, classic, Season of Discovery, Retail and a side of Remix, they're already juggling a lot, and aside from new player confusion, spreading their playerbase too thin is a concern. TBC era would not attract many new subscribers, so everything they did there would be directly away from classic and especially the upcoming WotLK, so I think it's understandable that Blizzard chose to axe it, as having one active server is much better than a handful that are on their death throes.
There's also definitely maintenance overhead since they have to have all of the pipelines up and active, but I imagine that not wanting to splinter the playerbase was the primary reason.

On the other hand, I don't think Blizzard will give tbc era servers anytime soon. I fear they'll want to hype them up in a Blizzcon beforehand, and those servers weren't mentioned in the roadmap given last year, so we'll probably have to wait for them for over a year, still.

    • @Dalzedur
      @Dalzedur 12 дней назад

@@ThorBB Era server = a set of realms (pve, pvp, rp, rp-pvp) all of which are using a particular version of WoW which aren't seasonal or reset after enough time passes since the realm's start. You make a character at level 1, level it to 60, afk for 3 years, and your lvl 60 character is still there when you come back after being away for 3 years.
Currently the only era server available is that of vanilla classic: max lvl 60, no outlands, no jewelcrafting etc. They left an option to play the classic vanilla, while progressing on to the next expansion (which was tbc), then once tbc classic ran its course, they forced the characters to migrate to wotlk realms and shut down the tbc realms, then after wotlk ran its course, they migrated the characters to cataclysm realms and shut down wotlk realms. If they had kept those tbc and wotlk realms around, they would have become era servers for those two expansions.
So basically, you can currently play vanilla classic, hardcore classic vanilla, season of discovery, cataclysm classic, and retail (the war within). You cannot play tbc or wotlk, because they shut down those servers when they migrated the player characters to the next expansion. You can visit the zones in a later expansion, sure, but it's not the same.
A lot of people have begun to miss playing tbc and wotlk now that you can no longer play them, and want the option to play them again. That would be accomplished through setting up era servers for those two expansions, which would take almost no effort from Blizzard, because they have the code for those versions of the game already and the hardware infrastructure to do so in basically one or two days if they just wanted to go and do it.
Currently the only way to play those two would be to play on a private server, which are not official Blizzard servers, which means that when people play on private servers, they are not required to pay Blizzard for a subscription to play. In other words, because Blizzard is not offering era servers for tbc and wotlk, they are not making money from the players who want to play only those two expansions.

It's still absolutely crazy they didn't even keep one set of TBC up.
I think in the future, TBC, WotLK, Cataclysm, and any other future classic expansions, when they go into hibernation, should retain one type of server (PvE, PvP, RP, and RP-PvP) up for each region (timezone for North America, language for Europe).
That might sound like a lot, but they run tons of basically dead servers for both Vanilla Classic and Retail, so merging some of those and opening up these for the sake of posterity just feels like an easy community win with literally 0 downsides.

This is very simple: When do you realize that TBC is much better than WOTLK? The exact moment you spend 5 days in a row doing the same Argent tournament quests that you have to do for 100 days to get all the mounts and rewards for each faction.
The moment Ulduar ends WOTLK dies... it just dies, there is a brief air at the end inside the Icecrown Citadel but it is not even close to the experience that is lived in the burning crusade.
In burning crusade, the maps and missions are similar to those of classic, there are stories in each map... there are many things to discover and lore of draenor, there are legendary raids... the dungeons had attunements to be able to access, which forced you to immerse yourself even for once in the lore of the expansion... we never experienced anything like TBC again.
Personally I started playing WoW in Cataclysm, I always thought that WoTLK was a better expansion than TBC until Classic allowed us to try it, how wrong I was... TBC is not only better than WoTLK but it is possibly the best expansion ever created, the closest to Classic.

"When do you realize that TBC is much better than WOTLK?" - For me it was in the first WotlK heroic dungeon. We go in, I try to make a plan about how to CC the mobs. The rest of the group goes YOLO , and we steamrolled the whole thing.
For me, TBC heroics and Kara were peak WoW.
Also, one boss raids were an awesome idea.

TBC shines in many ways, but the class design was quite rough compared to what we currently have in Cata. Warlocks spammed a single button and did close to double the damage of many specs, and group wide buffs are significantly inferior to raid wide when creating an equal playing field for raiders. In many ways TBC was superior to Wrath and Cata, but in endgame pve content there are many ways Wrath and especially Cata are superior.

I love Hellfire Peninsula. I know most hate it, but I leveled two alts in original TBC and getting from the old world to Outland just felt so good. Hubs with tons of quests that all took place nearby. Quest rewards that were amazingly awesome when you were coming from Un’goro/Hinterland greens. Plenty of flight points to make traversing the zone a breeze. And, of course, that feeling of abject terror when you heard the mechanical roar of a Fel Reaver behind you.

Its this nice middle ground between Vanilla and Wrath (obviously) with complex classes being rewarding, more specs being viable while having that 'weird' factor that really added to the fantasy of the setting.
The main two downsides as I see them - attunements taking too long (and not transferring to alts) and 10 man raiding being extremely limited. Minor changes to address these two things and I'd be happy to replay it again.

What I think made TBC great was that it was simply an expansion of Vanilla, nothing more, nothing less. A few small changes here and there. Some classes/specializations were reworked, which made them better useful in raids, provided increased benefits to other players, and overall made playing some classes a little better. The raids were mostly good with memorable boss encounters and environments, and the introduction of heroic dungeons for those who needed filler pieces to complete their endgame armor or to catch up with everyone else who's getting gear faster due to RNG. Some of my best WoW memories were made in TBC. I didn't get as far as I wanted, but I had fun trying to get there.

TBC is great, but by far the biggest negative is the requirement of 5 shamans in every single raid if you even remotely want to perform at your best with an ideal raid. Almost completely necessitates a guild or GDKP, finding 5 competent shamans in a pug was a nightmare. Not that big a deal for me as I chose to go the guild route but pugs on my alts were rough. Was also amazing to have an expansion where warriors actually had to wait multiple phases to take off rather than stacking 20 of them like we did in Molten Snore on. I would love for lust to be raid wide if we ever go back but no changes clowns would whine. Mount Hyjal was also atrocious. His comment about "trash being harder than raids" is also true and made those parts of the game, like TK sheep spam, utterly cringe. The grinds for items like belt of 1k deaths and DST were also extremely rough, so it wasn't a perfect expansion by any means.

5 shamans but its 3 different specs at least. I dont see it as a real problem. They could nerf bl/hero so its not a big deal if you dont have 5.

Clearly by far the most fun I've ever had in WoW and gaming in general. Sure, waiting for trash waves in Hyjal was ass and yes, 4 out of 5 bosses were forgettable and uninspired but the memories of managing aggro as a roided up warlock during the trash waves will stick with me forever. And M'uru (with a PC from 2003, a 480p CRT display and 250ms baseline and "read something in the Elitisjerks forum" levels of game knowledge) is still the by far most challenging encounter this game has ever seen.
Btw, 100% of the people I know who kept telling me that Sunwell wasn't a challenge and gamers were better in 2022 than in 2007 DID NOT KILL KJ IN 2022. With 1440p screens, 15ms, client and clore based on Legion/BfA and 15 years of minmaxing culture :)

    Couple of notes:
"Trash being hard and bosses being easy is undesirable"
    - I actually disagree with this. At face value, I think a lot of people would say "yeah trash sucks, I wanna fight bosses". But what ends up happening, is that the raids lose some intrigue when the trash is just incredibly easy. Why have trash at all? The difficult trash in TBC added weight to the raids and meant that you needed to actually be organized/present to clear raids. Compare this with WoTLK, where trash was simply stack and cleave for the entire xpac...that was boring as hell. TBC actually made you think and use utility...better imo.
    - I think there is a large portion of people that very much prefer raids like Black Temple to raids like Ulduar. This is probably because our groups faced a challenge each week in BT that felt surmountable, but challenging. Ulduar, which we also cleared, just felt like RNG could screw you every other mechanic. I get that some people like difficulty, but Ulduar and beyond really soured that game for me and many others. (We cleared through ICC Hard Modes...I just don't care to do it again).
    Group Wide Buffs
    - Get rid of group wide buffs, it'll be too hard to find people for raids if they keep this type of restriction going forward.
    Skipping Phases
    - It's fun to skip phases with high dps. Forcing an Illidan p4 is the incorrect approach, just raise his hp a little bit. Hitting that threshold as a raid is a huge achievement and one that we celebrated in TBC.
There's nothing to do outside of raid
    - I feel like this is true of all Vanilla/TBC/WOTLK...only difference is that we actually played TBC arena (casually) a bunch. WOTLK pvp wasn't fun and vanilla only has like AV.

@@IdeaChovet64 It is not... TBC is worse in design compared to vanilla imo... They took away sooo many elite quests, outland sucks and the worst of all... They made all classes get real rotations that blizzard had come up with instead of just giving us alot of abilities/tools that we had to come up with the best way to use. Vanilla feels like playing DnD, Tbc less so

Tbph, I really find how Blizzard approaches releasing Classic content to be kind of frustrating. I honestly feel like the only reason they take away the different era's of the server is so they can farm hype in the future by rereleasing them and getting the big wave of excitement when they need it, and honestly I just think its really not respectful towards the players who do want those servers.
I really don't see any Player first reasoning on Blizzards end not to just release a small handful of servers for Vanilla, TBC and Wrath, let 1-2 run as forever servers so people who just have the urge to play the old version of the game, they can just go do it, and then have a few others which cycle seasonally for people who want to ride a fresh start server and do content releases and reclears.
I genuinely feel if they did that, the community would take the initiative to do events on those servers when there was a spark for it, and the servers would see a fairly healthy flow of players.
I really dont see it any different then like, I wanted to play Warcraft 3 today, so I just played warcraft 3 for a few hours. I really think its kind of silly that we exist in a state where if I wanted to go play Warcraft 3 in this comparison, I'd need to just yell on the forums until Blizzard deems it the correct time to give me the privilege of going back to play it again.

      With 40 man raids...yay.
WTB TBC or a TBC+ much better.
10-25 man raids, harder heroic dungeons.
Don't get me wrong, I do like Classic too but when it gets to the 40 man raids, most often you are forced to merge with another guild and the drama really starts.

I can only speak for myself but TBC was the only expansion of WoW that felt closer to classic while at the same time being something new and adding something new. It kept our classes along with the spells and progression in them while adding to it which opened up a lot of possibilities. It kept the speed and rate in which you leveled as well as did Dungeons and raids while again adding something new. I think when most people are asking for WoW Plus they don't realize a lot of them (a lot not all) are really asking for something similar to TBC or basically "Give us new stuff but keep it in not just the style but the system of classic. That said I don't bring up WoTLK because that was something different in that it was the one that add a great deal of new and change while holding on to bits of classic in a way that people thought would be the new way going forward. Again all of this is just my opinion and you are beyond free to agree or disagree.

Josh Strife Hays was absolutely right in his recent Gamersupps video. Sponsored ads like the one in this video serve only to break up the flow, most people skip them and they don't work long term. With RUclips currently engaged in a losing battle against ad blockers, it is truly the advertisers with a sense of practicality that will be ultimately successful.
