  • The Twilight Realm, and by extension, it's denizens known as the Twili, are shrouded in mystery. What is the truth behind the Twili's origins? Can we find evidence of this in the palace itself? And most importantly, what makes this dungeon stand out from the rest? Despite being the most straightforward dungeon in the game, the it still manages to impress.

    Zant is one of my favorite boss fights that I've played in a Zelda game. He's not particularly difficult to beat, but he is fun. The last phase of the fight is so chaotic, which is reinforced by the music changing every few seconds.

    Great video as always! The Twilight Tribe being a warped amalgamation of various races is an interesting idea for sure! Pointing out those Musical Easter Eggs... It's kinda insane when they're played back to back like this. Probably why I find these soundtracks so compelling compared to a lot of games, they're very detailed and purposeful in a way I find really appealing :)

    16:17 This is 100% correct. Shadow by itself is harmless, the same as light (except for beings of shadow). When you enter the Shadow World, Link is fine, as that is just that, shadow. But the blanket of shadow that covered Hyrule did not create another shadow world. It merged Shadow and Light, and created Twilight, or as Zant puts it: "Merge shadow and light to create *Darkness* ". The Twilight Covered Hyrule is a Dark World, of the same kind as the corrupted Sacred Realm turned into the Dark World by Ganon. In fact, in cut dialogue, the Shadow covered Hyrule is refered to as a "Dark World".
    Midna even says that we were lucky to have been chosen by the gods, resulting in our wolf form, as we would have otherwise turned into a spirit, or worse, a shadow beast. And shadow beasts were twisted Twili corrupted by Ganon's dark magic (Malice perhaps?)
    The only instances when the term "Twilight" is used in japanese is when referring to this blanket of darkness that covered Hyrule, and when Midna mockingly called Zelda the "Twilight princess" 黄昏の姫さんよ (Tasogare no Hime-san yo). Midna for instance is called the "Shadow Princess" 影の王女(Kage no ōjo) by Zant and many others, such as the Sages (who in the english version call her the "Twilight Princess", being wrongly translated).
    And curously, later in BOTW, she is called the "Shadow Queen" 影の女王 (Kage no joō), not Shadow Princess. Cool huh?

    • @CaptBurgerson
      @CaptBurgerson  2 года назад +5

      "Shadow Queen" has such an incredible ring to it! I love that. And her being the rightful ruler of this place, honestly that makes way more sense than her being the "princess".

    • @ZeldaLore
      @ZeldaLore 2 года назад +5

      @@CaptBurgerson it makes sense of you think about it. Midna had recently been chosen as ruler of the Twili people, which is shortly before we see Zant run outside and bang his head on the floor in desperation before Ganon showed himself before him posing as a God. She was a princess then. Immediately after meeting Ganon, Zant usurped the throne, and began the Shadow Invasion of Hyrule. It wouldn't be until after Midna regains her throne that she would become queen.

    Not sure why the twili people would have came from multiple tribes instead of 1 would be thought of as a copout theory. The Japanese version of game kinda suggests that to be the case. It only says that people who were proficient in magic rose up from the people made up this group, it never specified which tribe/race or how many of the tribes/races these magic users came from. Just that they already existed in Hyrule and they were proficient in magic

    • @nillynush4899
      @nillynush4899 2 года назад +1

      And since the Twilight realm is basically TP's interpretation of the Dark world, many dark magic users could have been banished there, and over thousands of years assimilated into the Twili people.

    Hmm. When I look back at the memory you find in Hyrule Castle, the only Guardian we see active has orange glowy lines. This is the same as the Guardian Scouts found in Shrines, which makes sense, as they're still acting on the orders of the Sheikah to test the hero. Corrupted Guardians have the red (magenta?) glow of Malice. What changes from blue to red during the corruption is the glow of the Divine Beasts.
    You can totally attack them, anyway, and Midna doesn't seem to chastise you for it. Or maybe the one player I saw do it didn't keep at it enough to provoke a reaction. I don't know.
    I assume that, given that their appearance is just like the Shadow Beasts we fight, their placement in the corridor right outside the boss room, and the fact that they attack you if given enough of an opportunity, Midna would be fine with you attacking them. It's just the ones you find outside the palace proper that she doesn't want attacked.
    My favorite music in the Zant series of fights is during the frozen bedroom portion, but I like how the final phase's music just goes off the rails.

    there is another way to explain the similarities in the symbols. there is a theory (or it might have been outright confirmed by the hyrule historia) that the twilight realm is sacred realm corrupted by ganon/ganondorf's power. so what do all these temples have in common? a connection to the sacred realm and or the goddesses/goddess hylia. this would then further explain why we need to go back in time to the temple of time/temple of light (to call back to the video on that dungeon) dungeon. if we didnt go back in time then we could have ended up in a vastly different space with possibly the same designs as shown in the palace of twilight and without a known way to get the dominion rod and final mirror shard. (though it is entirely possible to have the dungeon be uncorrupted due to its power protecting itself and a small area around it)

  • @hambartha
    @hambartha Год назад

    Great video analysis as usual and you bring up a lot of great points in this dungeon. By comparison, I feel that this dungeon is larger than your average 'mini-dungeon' but it doesn't strike me as large as previous dungeons in the game. Perhaps there was plans to expand this whole area that were cut during development? Judging by how vast 'The Twilight Realm' appears to be I get the sense of wanting to explore the area further with the islands in the distance (Given the recent Tears of The Kingdom Trailer I really get a sense of 'The Sky Islands' here so perhaps cut content in Twilight Princess may have made its way into the sequel of BotW?).
    Very interesting and astute comparisons in the soundtrack here - the similarities to other areas associated with The Gerudo is uncanny but I think in Ganondorf's speech he seems to think 'The Twili' are a completely different race altogether according to him and a somewhat 'lesser race of people' in comparison to The Hylians who were seemingly more gifted magic users? Perhaps because of Hylia and The Three Golden Goddesses divine influence? There is a great deal of speculation about 'Twilight Realm' and 'The Twili' and a lot of it still seems as mysterious as the same tribe who apparently created 'Majora's Mask.' The symbolism of Majora's Mask and The Fused Shadow also seem to bare similar symbolism and there's possibly a connection there. The 'Eye Symbolism' on the Twilight Palace also seems similar to the iconic 'Sheikah Eye Symbol' and The Sheikah have been referred to as 'The Shadow Folk' so I think there is a stronger connection between 'The Sheikah', 'The Dark Interlopers' and 'The Twili' than other races in Hyrule. It also brings up the mystery of what happened to the man who had an 'Eye to see the Truth' whose house stood by the well in Kakariko Village and we all know that Bongo Bongo was sealed there... Was he a Sheikah defector who used dark magic and went mad searching for The Triforce?
    The battle with Zant is also very unusual especially during the final round set in Hyrule as that two-sword style seems similar to The Garo from Ikana but his generally mad fighting-style has an uncanny similarity to fighting Majora - it adds more mystery than any sort of clarity of why Zant fights the way he does...
    The 'Green-looking Energy' from The Twilight Palace also seems very similar to that 'Sealing Energy' we all saw in that first trailer for Tears of The Kingdom - does this hint of 'The Twili' being involved in some way? The outstretched hand reminds me of Midna. So many questions!

    That intro tho 👌
    10:16 My mom said the twilight people look like Marilyn Manson i was dying 😂
    I remember feeling very anxious playing this dungeon because of the hand that follows you. Mom finally understood the darkness of Zelda when she was watching me go through some of the dungeon. She got anxious watching me play and even screamed when the hand came in clutch and dropped on me out of nowhere! Haha it was great. But honestly the symbol of the dominion rod reminds me of the alchemical symbol Pluto. That symbol represents given life, rebirth, hidden power, etc…So i think that’s very interesting they went with that route with the symbol. Its not the exact symbol but the marking is similar.
    And im soooo glad i watched this video after i finished the dungeon haha because while i was playing i was connecting the dots from the palace of twilight to Botw and i was like “omg this all definitely linked”
    remember that scene when midna climbed the pyramid like a spider? duuuude it looked just like the dark abominations the botw concept book had!! i feel like those scary abominations are from the twilight. I would like to see the twilight return. i can imagine them doing like a piano version of the twilit battle theme lol i wanna hear that. But anyway i’m so glad to see that im not the only one who thinks there’s a major connection! I think Midna’s people are the zonai. I also think her people is mixed race. Im thinking maybe its a mix of Gerudo and Sheikah? Midna does have very gerudo features and its almost a coincidence the mirror of twilight is in the gerudo desert
    what im confused is how Ganondorf could possibly be the same Ganondorf from OOT since they have different ears. minor detail but i feel like that speaks a lot
    I also remember Zants final words “Ganondorf will resurrect me” and i immediately thought of Kohga haha. His clothing is also very Zonai. I think botw is the twilight princess sequel the Zelda team was wanting
    lol im 12 minutes in and so far you and i are on the same mind when it comes to theorizing this subject.
    I think maybe Midna’s people also originated in Termina. I feel like there’s definitely connection between Majora’s Mask and Twilight Princess. Therefore these interlopers can be anyone from the land of Termina which also did have Gerudo and maybe Sheikah? That’s more of a stretch tho haha. this dungeon is definitely the most memorable for me.
    The palace of twilight also reminds me of Sheikah craftsmanship. Looks similar to those shrines in botw
    im definitely a bit surprised to realize Midna has no grudge against hyrule. If she’s really a gerudo i can see her mindset being the first step to the gerudo buying their trust back to Hyrule. Definitely a good leader
    EDIT: another alchemy reference i noticed right away was “Sol”. thats also spanish for Sun but its also the exact alchemical Sol which pretty much explains itself. It represents the sun and also gold. I think Sol in this game is a bit more on the nose it has the circle in the very center

    One of my most favorite dungeon music... the outside of the palace. :) so much lore about this Twilight world... But still , it leaves more questions than answers. I love the theories about it, but sadly the production team seems to be too shy and careful to give clear answers in the first place, they might be afraid to contradict their own zelda universe, therefore letting the fans to build the storyconnection to other titles. Something EACH zeldagame lacks of.

    I was so pissed when i made it to the Twilight realm. The whole game you're made to imagine what it may look like, this parallel world. Then you get there and it's just 3 floating islands. Where are the inhabitants? Where do the twili live and sleep? Why are these islands floating? Where is the surface? Where are all the twili?! From a world building aspect the twilight realm was a nightmare, just like the city in the sky. Simply lacking all credibility.

    • @UnsortedSeeds
      @UnsortedSeeds 5 месяцев назад

      It IS just the palace of the Twilight realm, so it would be built to separate the rulers from the common folk. It's not an uncommon practice even to this day. The twili that are out and about are likely palace servants that survived and hadn't fully transformed into the beasts.
      Keep in mind also that there was loads of content and ideas scrapped from the original build of the game. It was almost entirely overhauled from what was a nearly complete game. That version was demoed in the 2005 E3 and GDC, and the final version was released not long after on the GameCube and then the Wii.
      It could have been longer, yes, but the previous dungeon was large and sprawling. This one comes immediately after. The tension, ambience, and oh-so slightly off kilter design of this place more than made up for it for a lot of people.
      You are, of course, allowed your own opinions and feelings.
