- A new client horse has quite a bit of trauma and emotional damage from a previous trainer. Follow along as I show you a few habits I use in training her, to establish a relationship of trust, friendship, love and respect.
Follow along with our family as we share our life events while living on our 168 acre homestead, farm and stables!
We are all about raising and training our horses, the Missouri Foxtrotter. Our goal is to bring awareness to this breed and showcase just how wonderful they are! We also raise and train our working border collie dogs. And don’t forget the homesteads sheep, goats and mini cattle!!! We also go to occasional auctions and recently have gotten into regenerative farming/agriculture. We are all about learning how to improve our fields/soil.
Phew! That’s a lot! But we love it! Make sure to subscribe to our channel to follow along!

As a fellow Christian, I appreciate your praying, not trying to change anyone else. Thank you. I love watching your channel.
I'm glad he was very respectful to those of us who are atheists, and he didn't rant on about it, because that is annoying as h*ll.
Thank you
@@cattymajivyep, thumbs down hurt on a channel!
Thank you so much for being so patient with her and I know she will give you so much pleasure and her gift to you will be ten fold🐎❤
Good girl! Pearl is such a beautiful Foxtrotter. I too have been through a lot of trauma throughout my life, so I understand her demeanor. So happy she found her way into the loving care and training of your family. God bless!
Jesus and God don’t want us to be stupid. You wear a seatbelt in a car. Would you not use a seatbelt because Jesus will protect you?
Awhhh, your dogs are so funny. They love to be included❤❤❤
I absolutely adore the thumbnail for this video. Such a huge moment.❤
Love her heart! She's working on it. 😊
She wants to learn so badly too. Her ears were all on you when you gave her verbals she's a gooooood little horse!💜
I have just watched a couple of your videos…one from a year ago, and one from one month ago. I am learning a lot! I really appreciate how you train and teach us why you do things a certain way with your horse! I wish I was closer for lessons! I have not been on a horse for many years, but I just love them! Thank you for some great teaching lessons!🌻🐴🌻
Rancho Cucamonga, CA❤️🌷🌺
I love this, no wonder they like you. You love them. They know it.
Love the good Lord helping u train this horse! Wonderful!
That was fascinating, I don't have a horse but I watch every video... Learnt so much you really have a bond with each of your magnificent horses.
JR, I just love the way you train!!Wow! The Lord has really given you wisdom! I've always had a Tennessee Walker. Lost him tragically to coggins when I left him in the care of the stable owner, when I went off to school. He put him out w the cows and didnt protect him w fly spray and just left him unattended. He was in his twenties when I to school. I didn't know anything about coggins back then! It was called swamp fever when I was young. I'm 63 now. Then Rhuematoid set in and I had to have 7 hip replacements in 22 Mos. Therefore the end of my riding. 💔😪 But, Jesus has assured me, I will be healed and ride again! Oh, how I have waited soo long for that day...I love watching you! It really has sparked that passion I used to have w horses! I love them! All animals. Anyway, thank you, for your gentle but firm approach and just, the thinking you have, in every move you make! It's just refreshing to see! I think you're great! Love to family and of course to Our babe, Oliver! He looks incredible! Would love to have him! God has Blessed you w some beautiful Equines!! Have a wonderful Resurrection Day! ❤😘
She’s so pretty! Thank you for being so kind and gentle with her!
I love that you pray for the horses before you work with them. For me, it makes total sense. I’m sorry I didn’t do that when I was young.❤
I like how you work with her. You say we are given dominion...but you really treat them with respect and partnership. I think dominion means more about being a good steward of the resources we are given than actually dominating them. You work with the horses. You don't dominate in a negative way. I so respect that.
Dominion has nothing to do with dominating. Think of growing a really healthy vegetable garden that you are in charge of. You alone work it you would have dominion over that garden.
Though I am not to terribly religious, but you all are the very definition of Christian living and love ❤️ thank you for showing people how practice the Lord’s love 😊
Excellent instructions! I hope that more people should stumble upon your channel like I did yesterday.
That's is awesome to pray over Pearl, what a change over her. What a great example of pressure & release. I hope the owners watch the video to see what was wrong in 1st round of training!
You settled your saddle on her back so gently.
Cause I’m fat.
Love the part about pray. As I am agnostic I also appreciate you’re mentioning other implementations of relaxation.
❤️👍
It would be the absolute height of absurdity to use religion to train a horse!
You are truly a good horseman with ur training...talking about getting off on a good note instead of wanting more is what i call setting them up for success and not failure. I really love ur training method, keep it up..i also believe it helps with improving bond too..u finish up on happy note increading trust and respect
I love ❤️ Love the prayers, that’s awesome!
Thank you for posting. I am always fascinated by your training methods and how quickly you find success with even a difficult, or damaged, horse.
"Slow is smooth and smooth is fast."
My hubby taught me that phrase with racing drift and rally cars. It's cool to also hear that phrase in regards to horses. 😊👍
As I've stated before. I have no knowledge about horses, period. But so far you are showing a gentle, loving, God focused way of doing what you do with your horses. I'd love to maybe learn to ride, but as you get to be my age (67 in June) you begin to forget these things. Love watching yours and another or 2 with horses. Good luck with Pearl. Look forward to your next video.
Thank you so much for your love and kindness toward all the horses you train. God bless you. 🙏💖
Just watched the other recent posting of Ollie and his 2" growth and 137 lbs "girth" weight. Kidding. He looks really good. And I know it's distressing if he shows signs of lethargy or "wobbles." But look far he has come- thanks to your wonderful care and HH fan fam donations. Keep "posting"! Lol.
Bless her she's a sweet mare and I love Ur way of horsemanship with her I have an unbacked trotter that I would love to ride ,I learned alot from watching this Ty
You have a wonderful way of teaching!
I love that you're being kind and patient with her...
And you talk real sweet to her to keep her calm...❤
No wonder Raleigh likes you so much! She's the toughest judge around, but with good reason. She cares so much about horses and hates abuse. Just like you. I'm so glad your philosophy is all about kindness. And I just love the way you use the environment to help you train them, like the tracks and the lake, where many other trainers would never have it even occur to them! You're brilliant and you do a beautiful job JR! ❣💜 ❤💕
What makes you think she likes me?
You are an awesome trainer. Never thought abou praying with and for the horse. Thank you for that!
That was very educational and beautifull at the same time.
Thank you, JR!❤
You do an excellent job!! Thank you for teaching us.
Thank you for being kind to your horses.Great work!
You are a good man JR. I Love that you train with love and understanding. I can not believe that people train them with chains. It makes me cry.
I dont know not much when it comes to horses.. I do believe like you that God gave us Dominion over all animals.. Its in the Bible..Thank you for sharing you tricks of the trade. It just goes to show you dont have to be mean to any animal to get the positive results.. Thank you for taking us along.. Happy Easter!!!. Love your videos..🇺🇸🌹❤️
This is not a joke, I would like to say I'm sorry for judging you when I had no right and asking you to forgive me. When you prayed over Faith, WOW! was I convicted. Thank you for showing me a different way to work with a spooky horse. God Bless.
Wow JR..just wow..what on earth did they do to that poor horse to make her so reactive to the slightest thing..they put chains on her legs to correct a trot ?.. I've said this before ..I'm no horse person but I am an animal lover and have trained dogs..obviously NOT like yourself and horses but you reward once they do something good and keep doing that in stages not push them further..I feel for her so much..yes as you explained she might be a bit highly strung from her breeding line but her previous 'training ' exacerbated all her predisposition to be ornery and frightened..I'm learning so much about horses from just watching you..didn't know about all the one side being used at the same time but showed us perfectly on little Rain..you show them the way and you can identify from her head and foot movements when she is comfortable with them and at that point ease off and it clicks in her brain.. easy when you explain it like that..just repetitive but in small doses not to overload her..and JR..she didn't buck did she..👍..I'm going to love seeing this horse relax and start to actually enjoy what she is doing. .brilliant video for any newbies like me but for people who may have these issues with their own horse..and the RUclips chanel should hopefully increase the people coming to you for horse training..which is clearly your first love..really enjoyed this video and looking forward to the next one..will you possibly be able to explain what 'gaited' horse means?.. 🇬🇧💞✝️🙏🐎👏👍👏👍🇺🇸
Her ears are back. We can really see how nervous and upset she is. Poor girl😢. I know you will be able to help her.
Your a Great Horse Trainer. Your good! An you have a Good Horse, Pearle-Horse. To knowledge. To trot. Or walking. An she seemed to seemingly calm.
I am so glad this beautiful mare is no longer in the hands of that former trainer, whoever thinks chains are ok is seriously cruel. She’s so lucky to have found you JR, her family are going to have a beautifully trained horse that performs from love, not fear. Great session, I loved watching you with Pearl.
From one Christian to another, I say Amen. I appreciate the Christian way of training. I appreciate being a Christian and listening to the Lord for guidance.
She is just perfection she seems to be coming along quickly! I love her so💜💜💜! Oh yes nearly forgot lol. I'm so glad that you groomed her first. There isn't really any better way to get to know you and relax. Thank you!!! You guys are just great I love how you do things!! She is afraid for SURE. She's definitely been "broke" is every sense poor sweety.
I knew it, I mentioned in a previous video that I believed she had been mistreated and you just said it. I thank God that you got this beautiful girl away from that abusive trainer and now she can be trained humanely and properly as she deserves. Thank you so much.
Amen yes we have dominion over Gods creation! Good job brother! Your videos are packed with so many valuable lessons that can be carried over to many aspects of daily living!
I’m learning stuff I never knew about. So fun. 💛
Wow..
Just thinking about the helmet just before you talked about a helmet...
I'm a Christian also and when you prayed it made me a bit
emotional...
😂 I kind of cry off and on during these videos..
I find them so beautiful..
There is a connection with these creatures... It is spiritual..
What a beautiful girl! I have 2 horses with a lot of trauma as well. Watching them learn to trust is very rewarding. I hope that we get to see her in the show ring!
What a great thumbnail!
Funny I don’t believe in god yet I find you so respectful of all beliefs, I so happy I found you on RUclips, I’m not a horse person yet I find it so informative to learn from your videos
Thanks so much for sharing
I am disabled now with arthritis, so I haven't been able to train a horse for a while, but I thoroughly enjoy watching your training methods. You train VERY much like I used to.
The prayer is part of my routine too. That and as he walks around the ring I call out Gods promise over him
I am really impressed of the way taking one’s time and minding one’s steps will make a difference with - and for - the horse.
Now I am in no way a horse person, but I think this was pretty cool.
I noticed already, in other videos, how extremely calm your own horses are with you being around them. They seem to be completely at ease with you. I like that a lot.
Good look at your training method. I learned to train from an amazing women and had good success following her example. I've never had a horse I've trained buck. Of course, that probably stems partly because I didn't take on horses others had mistreated. I wasn't brave enough to take on someone else's problem and pretty much started only youngsters that hadn't been riden before. I love your prayer for yourself and the horse. If I were still training, I'd definitely add that as part of the process. You demonstrate great horsemanship in every way. 😊 THANKS!
Great to see. Tracey
You are the best trainer, you take your time with them.
I love the way you treat the horse as you train her; however, I have trouble with motion sickness and can't watch the railing go by.
Tks for explaining everything so well.
Thank you for this very interesting video and all the information it contains. Poor mare, no wonder she is a tense after all these bad experiences☹. But I have every trust in you that you can teach her to trust humans again and to learn to relax and shine👍. Happy Easter to you all🐰🥚🌷.
I’m getting an education. This is fantastic! BTW, same with dogs. Love the prayer. Edit: Please wear a helmet. Kids are watching.
Love your techniques!
I admire your soft hand with her, no animal needs to have harsh training. I am scared of horses, but love to watch you with them.
I am so glad I found your channel.
Thanks for the Habits. Very informative.
Excellent job y’all
I swear I see hope in her eyes and a softening. Anything, be they man or beast, craves the respect and connection of being listened to. She is listening to you, but before all of that she noticed that you are listening to her. Thank you for highlighting the importance taking her past history into account, and simultaneously not giving her a pass or _forcing_ her through it, but actually helping to _show_ her the way through it.
Pearl is the GIRL! Thank you so much. I don't really know that much about horsemanship. I am have learned a lot by watching YT and other horse channels- along with your channel which is so informative and engaging. Any and all information you give I thoroughly enjoy. And thank you for that lovely prayer. Blessings for Easter, also. HE is Risen!
Brilliant work❣️
Happy Easter
I like how you complete every positive training maneuvre with positive reinforecement. The most recent memories are what they might recall first?
"Fear is the mind killer." ("Dune" by Frank Herbert.)
Fear is the grit in the bearings of any endeavor, I think. I can play a piece of music on my guitar perfectly, but when I try to record it, it's all over the place. I think the fear of playing badly makes me play badly.
Im reading dune messiah right now!
@@Lonesome__Dove Enjoy! It's a classic, IMO.
@Olivier Same thing exactly happens to me, and to us all. 😉✌🏼
@@costrio most definitely is. I read dune yrs ago found messiah at a yard sale the other day for a quarter. Couldn't quite figure out why i hadn't read it before! Literally the king of SF
Gorgeous head bob! I ride Walkers and KMH. Boy I wish I had railroad track.
Very impressive ❤
I've been riding and learning about horses for some 28 years now but know nothing about fox trotters and their gaits apart from what I see on screen. But horse is a horse, same applies. Loved it all; the pray bit, the faith bit, the no treat bit, the pressure - release/reward bit, the stroke/scratch reward bit, the energy projection bit, all perfect and as it should be. So good to see a trainer who understands how horse's mind works. Well done!
What great instruction! I never knew anything about Missouri Fox trotters and your clear explanation of their gaits and how to obtain it is a pleasure to watch! And amen to praying first! ❤
This was great!!
Yes pray then ride❤
Wow! So interesting! Thank you for such a detailed video. I don't have a horse, but I've found from watching another trainer with similar methods that I can apply these principles to other animals, too!
I'm so happy to see you doing exactly what God intended: teaching her to do your will with kindness and understanding. Some people don't understand that dominion is not a license to be cruel.
It was great to see you using the railroad track as a training tool. When you don't have a fancy stable and top-of-the-line equipment, you get to be creative! 👍😊
It breaks my heart to know that other Foxtrotter trainers use chains to get the gaits. At least your breed doesn't allow showing in stacks and chains. The Big Lick is one of the worst ideas ever devised by horsemen.
@ Karen Duncan I agree, well said.
No chains, no acid poured on legs for "soring" to get the high step gait. RR tracks-genius, better patent or trademark it. As long as it saves horses from cruel training methods, let them"borrow" your idea.
What is the Big Lick ?
@@kimmarievan-ever6599 I know it as a horrible style of showing Tennessee Walking Horses, still legal in TN. They use "stacks," which add height to the hoof, and loops of heavy chain to exaggerate the natural high action of the front legs. In training, corrosive substances may be put under the chains to cause pain and make the horse jerk it's feet higher to try to escape the hurt. This is "soring." It is illegal.
There are inspectors at Big Lick shows to check for signs of soring. When the damage to the horse's feet gets too bad to be hidden from the inspectors, the horse often ends up in the slaughter pipeline.
You really have to see the Big Lick to believe it. Search for Big Lick on the Horse Plus Humane Society channel. They are among the many campaigning to make the whole thing illegal, and often protest at shows.
@@karenduncan6004 oh my goodness Karen that sounds horrendous!! How on earth is that still legal to do..how utterly cruel..god that must damage their legs badly..I've heard of the Big Lick through Fletcher Farms of Amarillo who are rescuing big Clydesdale horses and the humane society who go to autions and buy all the really poor horses and try and get them better or if they are too damaged do the last kind thing they can do for them..it saves them from the awful slaughter auctions and trip south..they must dose them up with pain relief at these auctions to just get some of them to move..at their last rescue a few weeks ago there was a beautiful white horse and one of her legs was broken !! They euthanized her there once they bought her because the pain she'd have been in for the journey back to the humane society base would have been horrific..it breaks my heart to see these beautiful animals treated so badly..and the Amish who are supposed to be god fearing people..they got one of their horses that was around 22 yrs old and still being used to work they could tell ny the recent sores on thr horse and she was BLIND..i will look up The Big Lick..no wonder this horse that JR has at the moment..Pearl is so damaged if thats how they've been treating her..🇬🇧💞✝️🙏🐎👏👍😭😭
God bless you
Thank you for not using the harsh old fashioned way of training. 😊❤
Excellent video! I am not a gaited person (Paint horse owner) but had interest in learning about the Foxtroter horses. I like your approach with Pearl and will follow her progress.
I think the brushing/grooming helps the bonding process. She sure is pretty. Expressive eyes.
This truly is a blessing I don’t know any of this video that call upon the name of Jesus and the fact you pray a prayer over her. May the lord continue to anointed to show God creature that you care about them I have a little dog and a paper every day this is something that I would love to put on my page so everyone can see the goodness of Jesus Christ and how wonderful you are to these animals.
Thank you for adding the section about meditation and prayer. I sometimes handle a skittish mare, and found that singing always calms her down, even during the ride
Amazing technique and psychology. Wonderful loving method. Do you translate that into parenting??? Beautiful hearts!!❤❤❤
Awesome.
I love your love of nature and animals it makes my day🎉
You did such a good job with Pearl. She deserves a compassionate trainer. What brand is your saddle, looks comfortable . I have a young Walker.
Hedgpeth they are out of business and I don’t recommend them
Very well done. The Lord is definitely with you as you do trust in Him
What a job, w o w.
She is such a good girl. I am so glad she is with you. And she is so beautiful 😊
I love horses and I love watching these videos. It’s a welcome break from all the OTHER videos we are bombarded with on a daily basis. Thank you!
Love the way you teach us while on the horse! Helps us to better understand! Thank you and keep em coming!!!😅
Amazing!! You are very patient and have a kind voice.
JR you are so horse smart
❤❤❤
She’s a beautiful girl I hate to think of her with someone who would use chains on her. I like your kindness and patience towards her.
Yes. She is a sweet darling. Hope she is having a happy life.
Honey, don't call yourself "fat" because that's like you aren't appreciating your wonderful body, which is healthy, functions, heals, and all sorts. I pray about every thing, so I loved you adding this to your list. Don't care for the word 'dominion'...I prefer the notion of 'cooperative stewardship' 😉 ...but thanks for being so gentle and patient. Inspired!
What a wonderful way you have with horses, if only more people were like you! Such an interesting video, you can see she is nervous but will gain confidence with you. Sooo pretty.
29:51-29:52 Trot🎉💐👍you can hear the transition
