Wait, I also suffer from low-contrast face syndrome (LCFS)! I have always found that full-coverage foundations and opaque lipsticks look very unnatural on me too. If you ever feel like exploring this concept in further detail in the future, I would be very interested to hear your thoughts.

You know, I was surprised to find the Merit OG lippies all worked on my medium skintone, which meant they would be quite bold on lighter skin. This confirmed that. I think they are great for non-lipstick people medium+.
My running theory on why some people look better in more matte foundation vs a glowy foundation is that it has to do with the combination of a persons overall value, and where they sit on the scale of saturated to desaturated. If you consider that most matte foundations are usually more of a medium to full coverage (or appear fuller coverage on the skin), and most dewy foundations give a medium-light coverage look , it correlates with a finish that looks saturated vs desaturated.
If you want to wade into some color theory, when we are wanting a makeup look to feel “at home”, we are wanting to mimic where we sit when we consider the three dimensions of color: Hue, Value, and Chroma.
For example, my coloring is cool (hue), medium contrast (value), and medium saturation. Makeup that mimics those values- a cool toned, soft matte or natural foundation, a blush that’s cool toned and moderately pigmented (not too sheer, and but not highly pigmented either) and with a natural finish, and a lip that is cool and either a cream or soft matte finish, are going to look most at home with my overall coloring. I literally own zero lip glosses, and I have a shamefully large lip product collection, because a gloss just looks off on me. When I wear a gloss I find myself wanting more saturation and pigment, and less shine- a balm or balmy gloss is a much better option if I want a lip that doesn’t look like lipstick. Whereas your coloring appears low contrast and desaturated, which is why I theorize that you prefer a more glowy finish, and glosses over lipstick. Those mimic your natural coloring of low contrast and desaturated. When you wear a lipstick you’ve said that your lips feel separate or detached from the rest of your face; I theorize that is because a lipstick has too much contrast and saturation for your overall value and chroma.
this would make sense as to why I prefer a more glowy/dewy base even though I have oily skin - I have a very desaturated fair complexion!
This makes a lot of sense to me! I have similar values to you and have realized recently I hate lip gloss on me. I like a matte lip. I wonder what your color season is? I am a soft summer.
So desaturated = dewy vs saturated wanting matte, and wherever one might fall in between? It makes sense because of absorption of light. Thank you!

@@sarahevans6322 I’d love to hear what bronzer works well on you. I’m likely less cool and more neutral than you, but you seem to have a real grasp on the color value/chroma math. I’m finally starting (at 45 lol!) to realize what looks good on me. For instance, I have a way too large makeup collection, but I think I constantly was trying new things because I could never figure what worked for me. I can say with confidence I recently have 2 blushes and 2 lipsticks I love!!! (WA Je Reve and Queen Musia Becky Sharp / Valentino Rose Emozione and RMS Kir Royale) BUT if you have a bronzer idea I’d love to hear it!

So far 2 for 2 the things I have tried from your recommendations I have loved so much. Prequel moisturizer and Victoria Beckham eye Liner for the win. Weirdly enough I like to apply the eye liner with a thin flat brush and I don't think I will ever go back. I dream of the day you make a eyeshadow palette because I feel like you have such knowledge for nuisanced browns and a browns pallet with a mixture of mattes and shimmers by you would be epic. My only worry is that it would be all warms.
I’m a fair neutral leaning olive usually falls between you, Tom, and Hannah in shades and slip is a light nutty brown nude on me so that’s wild seeing it look so different but I liked it, went terracotta
I’m a lipstick girlie, through and through, and love the Merit formulas but… I feel the same about the colours! “Not what dreams are made of” is exactly how I’d describe them. I need them to put more nuanced cool toned colours.
Slip is my absolute favorite shade of Merit lipstick and I always pair it with Kackie lipliner. Editing to add that it definitely looks more like my skin/lip tone than it does yours. It pulls more neutral/my-lips-but-better…and I wear it with Midcentury and/or the Mob Beauty palette.
I bought the Victoria Beckham liner in Fig and as a green eyed gal it is my newest obsession since Stila had to go and discontinue Purple Tang ( not the same color at all but purple liners make my eyes pop). My wallet may never forgive you. (JK I make terrible choices all on my own!)😅
I actually really really liked how you looked with just the Merit lipstick and Gucci bronzer on. It was just a really flattering pairing with no eye makeup on you. I can’t quite put my finger on why.

I wish I could figure out what this meant in terms of art math and undertones, but I am almost your "skin twin" and Merit Slip pulls greige on me. Merit Baby was quite literally blue-grey on my lips, and I've seen it work so well on so many people. I looked like I had hypothermia.
I had a similar experience testing Baby and Slip in store. BUT I recently bought Classic in the new formula after watching Hannah Louise Poston’s lip swatches and I love it both lightly and more heavily applied. I think the mattes might have that nice subtlety but less greige.

art math moment: Merit Slip looks *so* different on you. It's a pale cool-toned beige on me, because my skin is only barely deeper but it's warm olive and I'm definitely high contrast.

@@CorinaAllan so I have fairly light skin and my eyes, eyebrows, hair are quite dark. Basically if you convert a picture to black and white you can see if the values (the light to dark axis) of your skin and features are more similar (low contrast) or more different (high contrast).
I wear the same base shades as you, also look best in peach/coral colors, but I’m a natural redhead. I own Merit Slip, and it pulls more neutral-gray on me. I was so surprised that it looks so orange on you! 😲
I love the merit lipsticks (i have tiger), and I'm pale, but I am a high-contrast lip person. I like that they are less fussy and more comfortable /for/ a lipstick, but they're still def a lipstick.

Have you ever tried the armani eye tints (just the matte shades, the shimmers are hot-trash-garbage), I have searched the internet for comparisons between the armani eye tints and the merit shadows and the internet is giving nothing. So if you needed another reason to throw money at armani in the name of science.... 👌🤭🥰
They are great, I have both, but I wouldn’t really compare the, to each other because they are totally different textures.
@@megstarbright Totally agree! Both are great for very different reasons. They are nothing alike. Armani is liquid, thin, easily spreadable for a good amount of time, on the more sheer side for the light colors but you can build them up without flaking. Merit is just so different, but has its place. They will not move, drier formula, I’d advise to swatch in person.
The Armani eye tints are more similar to the GenSee liquid eyeshadows. I don’t think they really are very similar to Merit shadows for the reasons mentioned above.
Does anyone else think the light Fenty shades do the ice cream tone thing Kackie talked about? I cannot find a shade match in this foundation, they all so saturated.

I have “Slip” in my collection but I admit I don’t wear it as much and I will have to declutter it soon because of old it is now. “Baby” (also from Merit) whoever became my perfect shade match and it’s the only merit lipstick I have repurchased. It’s less pink than “Millenial”, much more muted.

I think tiger and equestrian are colors I love from Merit lipsticks. The rest are meh. You don’t have to try to understand the craze. But if you’re curious, consider looking through them in the Sephora store when you’re there next time.
I feel so seen. I literally hated the Merit lipsticks and purchased one of the Victoria Beckham ones instead. And it’s amazing. The shade is Pose and it’s desaturated and lovely.

Slip is one of my favorite lipsticks, but mine looks more neutral to warm than rusty though. Slip on you almost looks like the shade Tiger from Merit (one of my favorite rusty browns). However, the rusty shades are gorgeous on you!

Purchased the Merit lip based on rave reviews; same experience as you. It sits untouched.
I'm sure this is a silly Q but can you run through best practices for storing/sharpening eye pencils. Long before I hit "stub" stage, I give up on them because I'm no longer getting a good edge or sharp point.
Honestly just keeping the sharpener clean helps for me

Fuck yes! I’m weirdly obsessed with mulled wine. Like I cannot set up my Christmas tree or put up fall or winter decorations without it. I’m physically incapable... By the way, a while back when you first opened up about your glassware kink… I felt so seen. My sister and I have biweekly girl dinners and go hard on the fancy dishes, cutlery, napkins and glass wear. We fucking get off on that shit. It’s neurotic.
Anyway, when your Aprés Ski line originally launched, I had my computer all set with the intention of buying the mulled wine gloss at the very least but got sucked into work and by the time I was able to get online again, the gloss I had been pining over was gone. 😭 heartbreaking. But I’ve already put in my order! I’m thrilled that I get another chance to get my hands on it. :) thank you!!!!

A question of mine on the high/low contrast lipstick conversation is I feel like the most iconic red lip girl right now is Taylor swift who is low contrast I would say right? So how does it work on her? Also like marlyn monroe and other blonde girls are always rocking a dark lip….
I know Taylor is a Spring and springs can wear bright colors well. The brightness, clarity, and warmth in the undertone allows it. She is a light tone, but not low contrast. Springs have medium to high contrast as a trait, that's how brighter or more saturated colors look good.

I know everyone here is going to come at me however I feel that the color of every Merit lipstick I’ve tried is slightly off and I can’t pinpoint what it is. I’ve not met a Merit lip color that seems right.
They all lean warm; if you are cool toned or neutral leaning cool that could be your issue with them.

Grungey colors don’t suit everyone! I hate them 😂 they look so beautiful on other people but I need bright saturation. And almost every single one of their lip shades are a little grungey.

The meter lipsticks really look different on everyone. The tiger, brick red, looks beige on my light/ medium olive sun. So weird. As of now, hourglass glossy balms are all I can wear. Just wish they didn’t have the menthol in them 🙄
I am absolutely SHOOK by how rusty Slip looks on you. I had thought we had similar skin tones but Slip made me look like a damn corpse, it pulled so cool brown (it was a nice color on the cheeks though, but no staying power that way)
