Before this Miller was mostly an FM album artist, alluded to by his references to Space Cowboy and Gangster of Love. But The Joker came out of nowhere as the single and album were smash hits and crossed over to AM radio. After this he had a string of hits throughout the 70s including Fly Like An Eagle, Jungle Love, Take The Money And Run and many more. I saw his band twice in concert and they never failed to deliver.
I remember the first time I heard this song. I was 13 years old. My mom had been diagnosed with cancer earlier in the year and sick most of the time and my older sister would ask of she could use the car to go hangout with her friends. My mom would say she could take the car but you gotta take Lil Roy (me) with you. I guess it was one less thing she had to worry about at the moment. This particular night we went to her best friends with her boyfriend James Crawford (RIP brother) and I drank my first screwdriver that night or 6 or 7 and I had a good buzz going and James played this CD and song. I listened to it over and over that night until they finally hid the CD from me LMAO. I went home that night and we were a few hours past our curfew and our mother was waiting up for us. I just stood there trying not away to much and praying my mom didn't speak or ask me anything. She asked me something and I spoke and was slurring, not making any sense, and rambling on and on. My mom said "Lil Roy have you been drinking?" I told her that I thought it was just orange juice and that my sister and her friend just kept bringing me more. That was a lie cause I begged them to let me just have one. They made me one and thought after that I was just drinking OJ but I kept giving my glass to James and he would hook it up with some vodka. My mom was so pissed at me and my sister and trying to tell and get onto us and I couldn't quit laughing. She asked why I was laughing and I said cause I'm the Joker and went on trying to tell her about the song and how badass it was. She finally gave in and told me knew the song and for me to shit up and go to sleep cause I was still going to school the next morning. I didn't make it to school lol. I still love that song and ways brings back that night. Thanks J.C for that night and that song. Hope you are jamming that song right now in heaven bro.
Funny thing...I saw a dude pick his nose while the song was on... I'm singing to myself.... I'm a picker, I'm a locker, I'm a roller and I'm a flicker.
For Years I thought that "Cat Call" Sound was a Female back up Singer!!🤣 Steve Miller, another Guitar 🎸 Master from the 70's!! We had plenty of them to Choose from!!
This was my first time viewing your reaction to anything, I loved it! Your reaction to Steve Miller Band matches my own and always will! I have all of their albums from back in the day! Thank you for reacting to this, it's what drew me in!
It was the Steve Miller BLUES Band. He was sexy and a very sexy bass line. So the way he played the solo was with a slide, in this case a metal tube on his ring finger. The original blues slide guitar ears played with a bottle neck. The guitar is tuned to an open chord. Want to hear some great old blues slide, listen to Johnny Winter, and albino white guy who grew up in the south and spend a lot of time in Black churches, along with his brother, who played keyboards and sax. They both sang. Their greatest record3d hit is a live version of Tobacco Road. The whole band was killer.
I’m a new subscriber so idk everything you’ve reacted to but have you done Janis Joplin “Ball and Chain”? If not it’s amazing - the live version at the park festival. And that’s Big Mama Cass sitting by Jimi Hendrix that they keep showing in the audience. Janis does her thang that performance
Hey thanks for being here Yes I love Janis I’ve featured her a few times on the channel search dub Zer0 Janis Joplin and you will find ball and chain Monterey pop festival I hope I spelled that right lol
"The pompatus of love": been listing to this song for 50 years, and I still don't know that that means. LOL Also, when this song came out, I was in high school, and we were all convinced that the line "I really love your peaches, want to shake your tree" was some kind of a really filthy reference, but no one could ever really say just how or why or what it meant. I don't really know if it's truly a sexual reference or not.
You must go earlier for Steve Miller, like to the album "Sailor" and "Children of the Future" and others, BEFORE SM went "Top 40" and became a "washed-up" hippie band.

Pompatus was a word he made up for his song Maurice. It has no meaning at all.
Steve's godfather was les Paul.
