Is it possible to use this setup to just make internal calls only (i.e. without sip trunks, or connecting to the internet)? I want to set this up in my home so that I can use it as an intercom type system (sick of shouting my teenagers every few minutes as their rooms are two stories up. There are 4 stories altogether). I mean would this work with just the server, switch and ip phones or would I still need a sip provider?
you can. i should doa video on the intercom feature of freepnbx since it will actually allow the exact functionality you are looking for. do remind me!!! you dial *50 and you can shoot out to 1 phone, 2 phones, or any amount you want WITHOUT the person on the other end having to pick up. it will automatically be on speaker. further, it will even allow you to choose whether you want it to be a 1 way intercom or a 2 way intercom NO sip provider needed for what you are asking, just any computer that will run freepbx and some phones that can connect to asterisk
Get some VOIP phones which support the SIP procotol (snom, avaya, cisco...) they all use the basic ethernet cable (rj45) you need to connect those to a poe injector or a poe switch to have them powered, some support an external power supply. The brains of this would be an old pc or a raspberry which needs to run nonstop for calls to work. I recommend running freepbx as it is very user friendly and free. If you need to make external calls (cellular or landlines) you can set up a subscription with companies like didlogic which provide SIP trunks which are billed by seconds and are usually way cheaper than regular landlines, and much more so if you make distant calls to like abroads. The monetary investment is high as these phones and switches/injectors are quite costly but if your house is big, you need this for a small office or if you make regular long distance calls it could be worth it.
I use to work with alcatel pbx... a lot of NDA's and a lot of money for the software, then vodafone started to give the systems for free in exchange of fixed monthly charge.... they give the cisco terminals and router and they configure all for like 100 usd... here the voip and pbx is ded since...
I live in the wrong fuking country my friend... Italy, it use to be different around here but in the last 5-7 Years it all whent shit... around Rome, Napoli ecc they fix Air backlight problems for 40-50 euro... most of the moderboards repairs are donne for at most 140 euro... in IT there are engeneers that are working for 1200 at month salary... the companies are going broke from one day to the other... I use to have like 30 companies where I was doing from videosorveillance to network, servers, virtualisations and keep all the machines backed-up... in 2 years only one of them is still working all the rest gone broke...
whell I guess nothing last forever, i should have studied to do the dentist :) they stop reading after graduating university, me instead i fall asleep reading datasheets...
I looked through so many confusing videos about PBX until I finally found something with a clear explanation. Thank you!

thank for this information louis. ive studied this on my own. but very nice to hear you explain it.
My guy well explained
Love this video! Do you sell any refurbished IP Phones?
which parts of the PSTN network are/were analog and which parts are/were digital?
Why the microsoft soft team video suddenly show up
So many’s layers, all opportunities for bad guys to listen in. Can it be encrypted?
The signaling(SIP protocol) and the voice itself(SRTP protocol) can both be encrypted if setup correctly and the provider supports it

Sorry one more thing, if you are not very familiar with routers, switches, linux and computers in basic this could be a challangeing project.
