- After climbing 2000' down a canyon wall, we find an incredible Salmonfly hatch happening on the Gunnison River in the Black Canyon of Western Colorado with Rainbow and Brown trout chowing down. This is no trip for the faint-hearted and with the help of a ton of batteries, we were able to film it all!

just came across this video. I'm a South Carolina guy that has been in the Black Canyon many times. This is one of the best videos of real BC Gunny river ever! Good work boys!!!
Drayton Calmes dude thanks a ton! Took a lot of work to get all that camera gear down in there, but when people are kind enough to say things like that^^^ it makes us feel good! Question for ya, what’s the biggest fish you’ve caught in the canyon?
Those dry flys taking shots are amazing.
Greg Sheu Dude, thanks a bunch! We worked really hard to get those... and sacrificed a bunch of fishing time for the camera guy!
I know this is older, but it's timeless! Amazing place to be and amazing fishing to experience. Absolutely on my bucket list!! Excellent job!
Awesome Gunnison River Canyon video!!! You guys worked hard to get that fishing footage. Many thanks!
Really awesome video! I spent quite a bit of time in the Black Canyon researching my book "Fly Fishing the Gunnison Country." It is probably my favorite area to fly fish in the state of Colorado.
www.GunnisonFlyFish.com Thank you! We want to go back in a bad way, but we also want to find some more gems in Colorado. Any tips?
@@TheElementWild I hear the blue river has some donkeys in it....especially if you bring some private land owners a case of beer to fish there property. Also the Taylor river, which converges with the East river to form the Gunnison, would be awesome.
Matt Begin I’ve heard that too but the private landowner tip is a good one!!
About freaking time a small film about fly fishing in the most rugged elements! Just my cup of tea! Wait I don’t drink tea! I’m a coffee drinker! Keep it up guys looking for the next video awesome work!!!!💪💪👍
F.P. SANTOS Dude thanks!
Such a legit film! Nice work you guys!
Travis Mohr thanks brother!
I have fished them rocks thank you for the great video!!!
I just listened to the podcast and had to come watch the video . This place looks epic ! Another amazing video !
Michael P Dude thanks! It was awesome! Def a place I want to go back to! Are you working through the podcasts in order or just randomly going through?
The Element I’m currently on a fly fishing kick . I work in south tx/hill country and all these awesome rivers make me wanna give it a try . So I’ve been watching your fishing videos and listening to those podcasts !
Sweet! I’ve heard the Nueces is a lot like the llano but wilder! I’ve been wanting to try it.
Oh that first take was siiiiiick
Matt Begin 💪🏿💪🏿💪🏿
Great salmonfly stoke. That canyon is intense.
Cowboy AT Thanks! It sure was!
Nice work dudes!
Chris Bee Thanks Chris! Patiently waiting on more from you! :)
Nice video man 👌, I live in Colorado and I have been by that area before and there is amazing trout fishing hope you have a great summer!
fAzE_SnAkEr 70 Thanks dude! We had a great time. Usually end up in Colorado every summer and there are still so many places to fish. Don’t know if we’ll ever get to them all!
@@TheElementWild I feel the same way I've been fishing all my life but still haven't gotten there yet, lol
It’s a great state! You’re lucky to live there!
Epic trip and documentary.
MrBlueSkyNM Thank you! It was a great experience!
Subscribed on the first eat! Good work!
flyfishingtheozarks Thanks dood! Subbed ya back. Let’s do a collab on some smallies soon!
Ready when you are......
This is awesome, y’all are going to cost me some overtime. I’ve gotta start shooting video.
Ethen Tompkins Haha! It’s a delicate balance between working more to have money to play and not working too much so you have time to play!
Damn, killer video! Looks like fun.
Matthew Chenoweth Thanks Matthew! It was a ton of fun!
I'm not a Trumper but as an Independent senior citizen, conservationist and avid outdoorsman , I know if people keep voting in Democrats eventually there will be NO fishing and NO hunting! What are your thoughts?
Amazing video!
Trent Denhof Thanks Trent!
Awesome vids guys. I dig how you rep BHA and repyourwater in your vids!
Unoit! Thanks Collin!
Nice work.
marvinpues Thanks Marvin!
Awesome video.. i'm jealous
Corey Cook Thanks dood! Should be happening again like right now!
Tight work! Is that the SOB route? How was the poison ivy on that side?
razorreilly10 Thanks! It was. Poison ivy was almost non existent, but this was last year so it might be different.
Awesome!
Zach Crowson 💪🏿💪🏿

You guys be careful on those mountains!
Grace Beacham will do!
Video posted in May but Salmon fly hatch is in June-July right? When did you go?
We were there the last week of June.
Looks like a sketchy descent. But worth it. 👍
Totally!
Great video guys. When do the salmon flies usually hatch there?
Jeff McAbee Thanks brother! Late June!
Sick film boys! Fuckin love them deep gorges
Tight Lines J Thanks dude! Fishing was crazy good!
I went fishing while the hatch was strong. I don't understand the hatch. They were flying everywhere but none we're landong on the water? Not one took my dry fly?
Daniel Jantz interesting. We def didn’t see it happening that way for us.
Sometimes if you see lots of bugs it is the front of the hatch and the fish aren't looking up for the adults yet. Try a large nymph in that case. Sometimes they just get gorged.
Daniel Jantz stinks that you didn’t get any eats. Were the fish taking real bugs of the surface? Sometimes your fly can get lost in the crowd as well. Maybe you could try some short strips or lifts to may your dry stand out? Cowboy AT also has some solid advise!
that rod bend at 6:51 .....
Cody Rodrigues I was spazzing at that point! I did not like having the line/leader connection in the guides on a fish like that. I miss the bends those ‘bows put in that 5wt. Thanks for watching dude!
We want more fishing videos!
Soon Marty! Lol what kind are your favorite?
I liked the guad video. Maybe try some smallmouth fishing!
Electrolytes KC!
jkaggie76 haha I know, I know. I’m still learning at this backcountry stuff.
Those definitely weren’t stockers, they had some fight to them
No doubt! Beautiful, wild trout in a beautiful, wild canyon!
What fly are you throwing at 2:25 in the video?
Eric Arrington I can’t remember if it was a stimi followed by a caddis or a big foam Salmonfly Pattern followed by a stimi.
I love you
Three out of the last four years i have hiked into the Black, during the summer, the National Park Service has extracted a corpse from the bottom of the canyon. Talk about lousy timing; the search and recovery -each time- happened during my 3 day stay in the park. The point is, the "routes" into the canyon (the NPS refuses to call them trails) are not to be taken lightly. Over 2000 (closer to 3000) vertical feet, pretty much straight down, and one slip or tumble and you are looking at 40-50 search and rescue volunteers mobilized to get your a$$ out of that hole (dead or alive). Don't believe me? Look it up. The fishing is ok, but the scenery is better if you can enjoy it without a S&R bill in the hundreds of thousands $$$$. Oh yeah, and don't forget about the poison ivy :( Tight lines!
Michael Porter no doubt. We were very careful! Bummer your trips weren’t great!
when matthew mcconaughey goes fly fishing..
Alex Manning haha, I’ll take it!!! Alright alright alright!
what trails did you use to hike in and out of?
SOB draw. Lost the trail on the way up and it got pretty hairy!
So what trail did you take down there?
SOB.
I live in Colorado and I have property in Gunnison
Joe McCleskey you’re one lucky fella! That’s a beautiful area.
I’ve done this
Max Leonard nice!! Same entry?
Do you think sob is aptly named? Lol
Haha! I’d say yes. What makes it bad is how hard it is to actually follow the trail. We didn’t get to film it, but we got very lost in the way up.
Where did y’all stay?
In a tent right next to the river.
@@TheElementWild is that legal? Planning a trip there myself
The fight don't get much better then that...... I just Subscribed to your channel - Keep up the great work and check out my latest videos and channel too, Thanks, USCG Captain Scott Manning, US Army Veteran
