The fact that Charles goes from being jealous of George to dissolving the Parliment for his sake twice is something.
He used to call him steenie & was as obsessed with him as James was. Wished they had expanded more on their relationship.

I believe George is bi/pan, it's made clear that he does like women but he takes his time coming to terms with liking men too. So it's less trying to get the gay away by making him marry Katherine and more like, he likes both and a wife would a) give them more money and b) be good for his image. So yeah, George likes all genders I believe. Or is shown too in this. Loving your reactions! Can't wait to see what you think of the glow up George has in the next ep...

I'm still not over their marriage portrait by Van Dyck where they're mostly nude. George was BUILT.

spent all the council stuff going 'oh christ how are you so naive, George' and then remembered it's literally his first time dealing with anything in court that wasn't being pretty and keeping people happy. THE SHADE from the spanish ambassador, THE SHADE. (all the constant little barbs are giving me life)
I was vaguely prepared for Katie by shakespeare nerdery but i'm guessing it's a name only used in private - Kate or Katherine in public.
I do like the fact that Charles is jealous as hell but knows his dad is just... like that. (they expand on this more next ep)

Katherine for the record, Sweet Kate for the court, Poor Sweet Kate behind her back 'cause she was the most cheated woman at court.

  • @ilariaciccarelli8775

Charles was jealous 'cause he didn't like how his father cared for George and not for him. He was the prince of Wales, the next king and George only a nobody. They become best friend but... it takes time.
Btw Charles's older brother was born in 1594, George in 1592.
Raleigh... He was like George, for queen Elizabeth, do you remember Elizabeth The Golden Age? With Clive Owen who played a sexy pirate? This is the older version 😎
Poor Frances, she was phisically abused by his husband and by his brother in law, she only searched for some happyness.
Katie, long name Katherine, Sweet Kate by the court, was a lovely idea, IRL it was shadier
And... executions were like that, one quick moove is a bias from Hollywood, IRL it took from 2 to 5 strikes to kill someone

To add on executions thing, It could take one swing to take the head off, but usually with a sword, and good executioners were rear and expensive, Henry VIII brought one to execute Anne from France. That's why the guillotine was seen as a humane method...

George called Katherine Katy and Katherine called him Georgie. They knew each other since childhood that's probably why. By the way I think the privy council blue outfit is one of the best George looks in the entire show Even when he was at the other end of the room I couldn't see anyone else but him. Had to rewatch the privy council part to finally get what it was about lol. As for in real life, I read that real Charles was even more obsessed with George than James did. Three years with George was enough for Charles to miss him for the rest of his life. It was really bad as Charles made lots of poor decisions (wars) because of/for George. (Sorry English is not my first language.)

they were father and son ( George was more father to him than James ), brothers, mentor and pupil, pimp and client ( James decided that his son must knoew about women so George arranged it ) nad maybe lovers, George was the only person at court who was allowed to call Charles with his name, it's seems nothing but at times was everything. Charles allowed this privilege only for two persons: George and Henriette

An interesting detail that the show doesn't go into is that Prince Charles was originally James's second son. His older brother Prince Henry was athletic, handsome and popular, but died at age 18, just two years before George came to court (George and Henry were the same age). I think knowing this helps with understanding Charles, but maybe the show didn't want to draw attention to the 26-year age gap.

I still feel a little ooky about using a 21st century lens to analyze 17th century behavior. Sexual preference as political identity is still very much a product of the late 18th century, prior to that, homosexuality was something one did, not something one was James and George did have affection for each other (George does end up married to Katherine and there is a 2nd Earl of Buckingham from that marriage), though I would stop short of calling them gay as a political identity.
With all that being said, favorites among courtiers certainly did exercise a fair amount of political sway in certain matters (it is noteworthy that James disapproved of George's marriage to Katherine because she was Catholic until her conversion to appease the Villiers family, so neither Mary nor George t had complete dominion over the king). I do like the little twist wherein Katherine is fully aware of Mary's intent and actually advocates for herself against Rutland's opposition to the marriage, and even George's objections didn't dissuade her.
The next time jump will take George into adulthood and longer hair! 1625 George is still lovely to look at, but I find the level of comparative maturity (at least physically) I find quite appealing.

Great reaction!!! If I was to give King James a suggestion on how to handle the situation, I would have done death by exile. I would have exiled him from the kingdom, therefore, setting him free to please the people. However, I would have written to Spain that he is theirs to attack if they wish. It would’ve been a compromise, and everyone would’ve got what they wanted.
