- We got this Toro 524 Snow Blower for free. It does not start. It is full of bad gas and we suspect major carburetor issues. Will it run?

I completely just binge watched every video on this channel. 😎
I just picked up a 624 for free and it actually runs! I needed a bit of TLC but was very well taken care of surprisingly. I had one to bypass the safety switch for the auger but I don't plan on sticking any body parts in there while it's running anyway. I thing I'll have this till I die it's so well built!
Love both your channels! Keep up the great work!!
Nice video. I’ve serviced one of these myself. They are a true beast. Quality construction
Great video my friend, I have the same snowblower with the same issue as yours, thanks to you I am going to clean up the carb and hopefully she will start and stay running.
Thanks bro 👍🏽
Nice bud👌. I knew these small engines were taking over your time but now we get a whole channel, f'n minnnnnnnt!
I figured I'd do the logical thing... and spread myself a bit thinner...
Looks just like my old 724 I got for free. The deadman switch lever is what was taken off and bypassed on the right handlebar. Definitely dangerous without it working!
+1 I got an 824 for free, a few years back, that had the interlock handle switch taped to the handle. Mine was working so I just cut the tape.
I have one like yours except it's a 8-24 ( originally with a 8hp tecumseh ) . Now it's a 6.5hp (chinese honda clone swap). 8 years ago I was tired of the tecumseh with its carb always out of adjustment so now it's a 6.5hp (chinese honda clone swap) . Best of both worlds, mechanical strength of old snowblowers and a Chinese engine annonced at 6.5hp but more powerful than was the old L-head Tecum . I just had to put a pulley adapter since the output shaft of the Chinese engine was smaller . For an easier installation I got rid of all these bulky electric interlock everywhere.A well-placed $125 that hasn't burned a drop of oil in 8 years .
I have one just like the one you worked on. I bought it new in 1980. The only thing I have had to do to the machine, is replace axle bushings, an ager belt and carburetor kit a few years ago. Oh yes, the spring-loaded scrapper blade as well. Regular maintenance is the key to a long lasting and well running snow blower. Always kept inside when not in use. Still looks and works great for a 40 plus year old machine. Just placed an order for a new Toro Power Max HD 1232 OHXE, should have it sometime early fall. I plan on keeping the Toro 524 for backup use. It never hurts to have a backup machine. Great video, thanks for sharing.
your old one will last longer than your new one so don't get rid of it
Hi Doug ! I live in N. J. as well. Great save, sorry but I did laugh when the cord came out of the machine !!! I'm glad you did not edit that out !!!
My neighbour lady has one, a 1974 model that has been neglected and left covered up in her yard the last few years. She asked me about checking it out, nothing made today will run and last like the old iron..I have been running a well maintained 1968 6 hp craftsman I got from another nieghbor with a flat tire a few years back,55 Montreal winters and ready for another....
I have the same machine. Don't forget to check the augur transmission for grease. When I checked mine, it was nearly empty. I used Mag 1 grease. I also put an augur kit on during the summer. Find out when the snow hits how much it helped with distance. The old cast iron Tecumseh's are excellent engines. For a 5 HP it does really well. I have had mine sense new and have really worked it over the years. Older Toro's that have been well maintained just keep on running and blowing snow. These old machines are built like tanks compared to the newer ones. Your find was a good one.
Mine is now a 6.5hp (chinese honda clone swap). 8 years ago I was tired of the crap tecumseh with its carb always out of adjustment so now it's a 6.5hp (chinese honda clone swap) . Best of both worlds : mechanical strength of old snowblowers and a Chinese engine annonced at 6.5hp but more powerful than was the old problematic & heavy 'L-head' Tecum . I just had to put a pulley adapter since the output shaft of the Chinese engine was smaller . For an easier installation I got rid of all these bulky electric interlock everywhere.A well-placed $125 that hasn't burned a drop of oil in 8 years .
Hi drug i have same one.im glad youhave it.mine it from new 1978 winter blizzard.
Great job man!
Thanks bud!
Man the inside of that carb when you took it apart.... Perfect condition bud 😂👍
That gas must have been in there for years... just mint
Nice job, I have the same one myself, there is a safety switch on the right handle, looks like yours was disabled with the hose clamp.
I have a Toro 524 that I bought in 1988 when I got my first house. Had a lot of trouble with it cutting out. It was the silly ignition switch. Replaced with a toggle switch. Tough one to find tho.
I just picked up 2 of these for $60 yesterday. Gonna start working on them tomorrow
That right there is a WIN!
I have a Toro 521, but leaks some oil out where the governor shaft goes in on the side of the engine?
Any ideas of why, and how to fix it?
Wats up Doug i had a question.I got a 524 toro 38040. Serial is 0023173 and i cant find wat bolts it takes.I looked it up it says 5/16-18×2 but for 38050 model.Do they use the same size bolts? Thanks
Thanks I have a 622 finally got it running after idle jet clean new plug. Out of three forwards I only have 3rd.
1,2 nothing reverse I have any suggestions
Woo, love it! Maybe some boat motor repairs in the future as well?
Absolutely bud. I may have bought 4 non-running jet skis over Thanksgiving to figure out on this channel... maybe.... I also have some outboard projects to tackle
@@DougvCarburetor nice nice, can’t wait!
Ol’ girl almost took off on ya towards the end there haha, but nice job getting her going with ease!
@@DougvCarburetor jet skis can be a nightmare money pit but they're a blast when they run!
I just got this exact same model. Engine works fine but I have to work on the gears. Seems to not want to go forward. But I think I can get this old girl working again.
I have a pristine model of the Toro 824 blower that has the Techumse engine that looks just like that one you are working on. It was my father's. It was his baby. He purchased it used at an Ace Hardware in 1995. There isn't one spot of rust on it and we live in the Chicago area so it hasn't been in a warm climate. I noticed your version has electric start. My father's has the old porcelean electric switch. You have a rubber coated version. Any idea where I can get the rubber version? That's the only weak spont on the blower. Thanks in advance for the great content and any suggestions you might have.
Tecumseh sm50. You are correct. And the 524 breaks down to 5hp 24”
Hey found one of these for $120 w/freshly cleaned carb. Are these things worth it? They easy to find parts?
5 horse 24 inch. I own one and it will move deep snow with no problem
I believe you have a 5/24 with an engine from a 7/24. I have both. The 5hp engine's muffler comes out the top of the airbox.
You and VGG be fixing small engines lately haha
tis the season, bud. In the fall and spring people toss out stuff that either doesn't run or they are tired or storing. Coincidentally those will be the same folks showing up tp buy these blowers off me the night before a big storm.
@@DougvCarburetor I'm so late winterizing this year I'm gonna procrastinate a little longer and I can say I'm getting these ready early for spring
Boil the carb in lemon juice you won't be disappointed learned that trick from an old timer
Seriously?? Thank you! I will give it a try
@@DougvCarburetor I'm serious just look it up, and do it outside boiling lemon juice didn't like that very much, did on a 77 xs650 and my current 88 evo heritage the came out 👌. Since you're in jersey and I now have another xj was wondering if you would be willing to look at over, I did come across your channel you tubing for something I forgot what it was but it would be an honor if you did
Looks like the finest the 80’s had to offer. Probably 81 or 84 if I’m not mistaken was the two years the 524 was made.
Is that a fact? That old? It is an animal. I was working on tuning it Saturday and I have to say I could see getting pretty damn injured if you didnt have all your whits about you running that machine
@@DougvCarburetor too many silly sodas and you’ll have a new nickname lol. I’ll email you a link I have for the owners manual.
@@bearallen852 Wow, thanks bud! I really appreciate that. My inbox is an absolute nightmare with all the spam I get, but I will sort through it today and try to find it. very thoughtful and much appreciated
I believe the 524 means 5 horsepower and 24 " cut. But I've been wrong before. Just ask my wife! Lol!!
You taught me something today. Thanks bud!
We're all here to learn. Some of us have thicker skulls than others.lol. I've never seen one that worked like that one with all the switches for the speeds.
That corn in the gas plugs up,run em out of fuel before you put em away in spring!
since you obviously don't know what you are doing, here is a tip: fog the outside of engine/carb with seaform spray or from a spray bottle. let it sit a a few hours or more. then start your disassbly. this will stop any damage by turning frozen screws/bolts.
90% of the time the gummed gas is in the bowl and mainjet bottom. total disassembly of carb is usually not necc. once running, run 50/50% seafoam/gas mix for first tank.
Gonna take the high road here and just say: Thank you for the tip. I will try fogging oil on these old units
@@DougvCarburetor Good way to go :)
5 hp. 1970’s model. They are strong.
Henry on mowers and blowers worked on the same one I think
I will have to check that one out!
