  • Picked up an old Toro 421 snow thrower for $75 and for another $50 got it working again. Here I replace the spark plug, fuel line, primer, scraper bar, skid plates, and unfortunately, the carburetor.
This video is thorough, so settle in with a cup of coffee and see how you can buy an old snow blower and get it running for just a few bucks!

😊I’d have used some of the drained oil on a brush and “painted” the sheet metal parts going back onto the machine to give some level of rust resistance to my machine.

I have two Toro 1980 models. Both were bought new by my dad. One is a 524 and the other one is an 824. Both run perfectly and blow snow just like they did when they were new. The 524 has new tires and an impeller kit. These old Toro's are built like tanks. I just replaced axle bushings on both machines this summer. They were really worn and needed changed. On these flat head engines, check head bolts for looseness. Torque settings. 16.5 ft-lbs/200 in-lb These old machines don't throw snow like the new ones do. That is why I added an impeller kit which does help with distance. These machines have a spring-loaded scraper which works really well on paved services. On gravel the skids have to be all the way down or you will be throwing gravel everywhere. Both of these machines still have the original friction drive systems. I drop the inspection plate each fall and lube and inspect for any problems. I do wonder if friction drive replacement parts are still available. This winter I have a new toy to try out. A Toro Power Max HD 1232 with trigger steer, quick stick and hand warmers. If conditions are right, Toro says this unit will throw snow up to 57 feet. I am looking forward to those hand warmers. I have at least two times taken the carbs off and completely dissembled them for a thorough cleaning. This year I started using ethanol free 91 octane fuel for all my outdoor equipment. Oh yes, I use Sea Foam in all my outdoor equipment fuel. The stuff really helps keep the carburetors clean. Enjoyed your video. Old Toro's are great machines when running and performing correctly.

@@norge696 I did the same thing on a Toro 521 is pretty much same frame but the shoot is a little taller. Now I'm just waiting for the new scraper bar and skid shoes to come in the mail.

spacer bars are on backward, the curved part should be facing forward, just a note, swap the left one to the right side and vice-versa to correct

Thank you for the comment. At 22:59 you can see that the skids are symmetrical and have a curved part on either side. Thank you again for watching.

I just picked up a 624 for free and it actually runs! It needed a little TLC but is in pretty good shape for being 34 years old (according to the serial number) and should easily last me the rest of my life as it is built like a tank. I don't think it was used much because the skids haven't been turned over yet and are not worn at all.

I picked up a similar one, it's a 524, Carb needed cleaned and a new float seat. I have fuel leaks and the primer hose is cracked too. Thanks for this video as it will help me! PS. I subscribed.

How did you remove those back bolts on the carburetor? I’m having trouble accessing them on my 421.
