As a civil engineer who specialised in urban drainage system design, feel qualified to say that we can rule out venting fans, as they are not implemented or installed in drainage systems. Something that constitutes venting would use means such as DWVs (drain waste vents), even if there was a fan, a fan of this would utilise a shaded pole induction motor which lacks the torque to overcome even the slightest of rust, and therefore will not rotate. Evidence by those gaping holes into the inspection chamber indicate no effort for suppressing harmful gasses such as h2s or methane from escaping, indicating it’s more likely a storm drain, and not a CSO or sanitary sewer. As for it being a warning about “flushing” the system, ignoring the fact that’s not what a warning sounds like, it’s important to note that the system would naturally reach a deadly flow velocity during any unprecedented time. wether it’s a storm drain it would depend on the time of day or ambient weather, including the fact legally there is no reason to warn people in the system as they’re technically trespassing and automatically are responsible for their own actions. Additionally supervision personnel, spray paint and / or barriers or cones associated with the drainage network operator would be more evident of a flush, yet there are none. At this point we are running low on potential explanations which is why i think there is a broad possibility of this being satirical-! That being said, if we take into account its a mechanical sound, from a “machine used to keep the drains clean”, that job is overseen by us engineers of the system before it’s even built to implement the right calculations to ensure the drain can reach Baldwin Lathams’ self cleansing velocity, and not reactivity of machinery. Also, no lifting pumps or impellers sound like this, they’d be much louder and you’d be able to hear the rushing water and feel a breeze coming out of those tool holes. Assuming it’s real, despite the reverb sounding oddly strange, feel what’s more likely is the following: A sound effect A person in the system doing it, it could be large enough size to enter and make a noise, or blasting a speaker through a road gulley or another manhole connected to this one via pipes or laterals It could be a chamber concerning other pieces of infrastructure, however the holes would mean water ingress, not acceptable - ? I havent seen this comment - and its 11 years later, but it reminds me so much of when I would swing as a child. It has that tone of going back and forth on a swing-set; the metal creaking as you hit the front of your swing-stride, and then float backwards
Metal on metal, it's a reticulating mechanism, similar to an old pumping windmill on a farm. You hear a very similar sound on one, as when poorly lubricated reciprocating things generally make a repetitive moaning, creaking, or groaning sound. It would have been an articulating device or devices within the sewer. Pretty loud although
I suspect this is possibly something to reduce debris and prevent stuff from blocking the drainage system. I saw something by a company (named something along the lines of JMC or JVC environmental) many years ago, about a machine that was similar to an industrial shredder but would sit with the shafts vertically in the flow of water. It would catch bits of debris and stuff discarded in the sewers and would cut everything in to bits to prevent drainage systems from clogging. There were other designs that were more like a screw sat up against a mesh screen that funtioned to catch and drag debris out of the water. I suspect this is possibly something similar that is running as it otherwise would, but has started to sound a little worse for wear. It sure does sound creepy though.
I was at Six Flags and when I was in the parking lot, I heard this sound coming from behind a fence, I heard it 4 times, it reminded me of this video, it sounded exactly like this
More evidence suggesting that this may infact be from a car in a different location, possibly on top of a manhole cover that is linked to this inspection chamber and the sound traveled through laterals or branches.
Metal creaking in the flow of the water, it then pushes back to its start position for some reason that would be obvious if you were looking at it, then flows and sounds again, simple
Sounds like an entrance to the backrooms. This reminds me of a strange dream I had. I've dreamt about the world it was set in multiple times. Truly bizarre.
I had a dream where basically it started with me walking to my school but there’s a sewer pipe that’s actually at the trail I take but what happened is that I heard a voice but it was my own creeped me out. But I continued to go further in too the tunnel until I hit a section that splits in to 3 different tunnels I went to the right as soon as I did so I turn around and just see a pale face with a slim body all gray around 6 to 8 feet tall just standing there watching me than I woke up. The strange thing about this dream is that the tunnel made a weird ambient noise it sounded kinda like this video. Btw I keep a dream journal to keep track of all my dreams
That sounds just like the door on one of the output drain that dumps into the river next to my back yards... It doesn't take much water to make that door, which looks like it weighs like 1000 lbs to move about an inch or two open to almost closed.. when I little bit more water flows, I can hear the heavy cast iron door closing in my basement walls, "ping" followed by a feeling and thump of the metal door hitting the rim... It took me about a year to figure out what the heck that noise was... and actually found it by accident, walking the river with my dog through all the wooded crap.. only to come across a huge concrete structure, and mounted on the front face was a hanging metal cast iron door.. and it would squeak making one sound when pushed open by the water flowing, and then a different sound when the weigh caused it to swing back to the closed location, on the cantilevered hinges... I hope that helps... Here is some additional info.... My buddy, live about 3 to 5 miles straight down the road from me, on the same road... One night, I was leaving his house, and we were chatting for about 20 to 30 minutes just leaning against my truck, and the sewer lid, had holes in it, and it had rained and sprinkled minutes before were started chatting there, and I could hear that squeaking all the way down there by his house through the sewer tube.. Now, he doesn't feel or hear the thud or thump sound or vibration from the lid that far away.. I can only assume that sewer pipe is straight down the street all the way to his house and why he can hear it on the man hole cover holes too. ? Just assuming, as I do not know the layout of the drainage system there.. But, until I discovered that lid at the river, >>>YES

@Fee Lynn facts? A friend telling you would be second source information, which could be inaccurate. I'm sure if it was a "fact", you would have a news article or link to send me.
@Fee Lynn then how am I supposed to believe you? All you have said is that a girl died in the 60s, if you actually knew the story you would tell everyone in detail... But your bland explanations have led me to believe this thing you are talking about is fake, so I need evidence to prove it. Your friend claiming it happened means nothing.
That, my friends is an M15A Gamut Sewage Flow Gate. The deep, terrifying screeching is a large copper brush meant to scrape and screech to alert workers of any change in flow or stop of flow. These gates are huge. Upwards of five feet wide and usually 600+ Kg.
FEE LYNN and technically, it is not a machine. It’s a large inert piece of metal that *May* have some control arms on it, but other than that, it’s just metal. Sewer systems are usually well maintained and hearing something like this, While uncommon, is possible.
well... now i'm pretty much confused to what that sound actualy is, havnt heard nor seen any of the things you both mentioned, mabe you guys could provide me with a link or something like that?
Sounds like a self cleaning screen for a combined sewer overflow. Its a mesh screen with a big Archimedes screw that slowly rotates so scrape off solids to keep the screen from pluging up. The sreen stops solids from passing through the overflow weir and into the stormwater. Look up "heliscreen" other rake style designs exist.
Noah is Neato i walked into that drain and followed the sound then i will found a 450 pound (hence the loud noise) rusty metal moving trapdoor that opens and closes, powered by water filling a a cylinder and the weight of the water pushing it down making the secondary side of the lever pull up the valve causing the water to slowly empty making the valve close again and refill etc. i think the lever needs oiling.
I come back to this video every now and then trying to theorize what this is and while I do still think it's some kind of alarm or alert since the sound seemingly happens at a consistent rate and I swear I can hear some kind of tone after the main squeak noise that sounds more like something that would come from a speaker but not knowing the exact location of where this is and whether or not this is a consistent occurrence we may never know. Would be cool if someone who knew the area could catch it making this noise again and possibly check other drains or manholes of this system to maybe find a closer source of the noise and maybe a clear and less echoed sound. My only other guess would be some kind of squeaky wheel or piston not knowing what's down there.
@Fee Lynn God I love being right and innocent. Mmm it feels so good to be the victor! I love winning! Damn, it would be really bad if I was investigated at all by the police! Oh well, good thing I'm not doing anything that would give them a reason to! *_sigh_* I love winning

In my town the tunnel system ran under the entire city and it was so forgotten that the town DPW workers did not know where all the tunnels were or what they were hooked to
I did my final project on the tunnels and went to City Hall and this was back when you could just walk into City Hall and the doors were unlocked and I spent a night there tracing the old paper maps of the tunnels that they knew of and the head of DPW who was in his 60s did not know half of what was under the city and I asked him showing him the maps that I traced and he was not aware of most of them
Later on I would have a doctor friend who was fascinated with the tunnels end started at one end of the city and walked most of the underground and came out at the south side of the city
I tried to go in but the smell of sewer gas was so strong I didn't want to risk it
my doctor friend was quite the adventurous and had a lot of guts to travel through these tunnels
A lot of them became default storm drain and default sewer and a lot of the sewage poured out of these tunnels into the Mohawk River
Some of them still do
It's really amazing to see how many cities still have raw sewage pouring out and back in the 70s 80s even the 90s they were still the same as they were 300 years ago
The Old Mills had these big Square Towers on the ends of the buildings and one day I went in to see what was up there and it turned out to be a water tank and these bills were before there was Electric and they used to have the water driven pumps pump the water up to the tank to provide water pressure inside the mill
They also had the giant cloth belts that ran 5 stories diagonally from the water driven pumps in the basement to power all of the textile sewing equipment and other equipment
It's amazing to see how engenius they were in making things run before there was electricity and how they build for the water which flowed naturally and how they constructed a huge system to divert the water and power all these Mills

I havent seen this comment - and its 11 years later, but it reminds me so much of when I would swing as a child. It has that tone of going back and forth on a swing-set; the metal creaking as you hit the front of your swing-stride, and then float backwards
You stand there quietly... and then, you hear it... "I'm Venom"

Why am I seeing this 11 years later-
I suspect this is possibly something to reduce debris and prevent stuff from blocking the drainage system.
I was at Six Flags and when I was in the parking lot, I heard this sound coming from behind a fence, I heard it 4 times, it reminded me of this video, it sounded exactly like this
Then you may be around that location
More evidence suggesting that this may infact be from a car in a different location, possibly on top of a manhole cover that is linked to this inspection chamber and the sound traveled through laterals or branches.
oh
It was the sound of Six Flags stock crashing.

@@oui2611 That would be denoted by a comma. The dream was recurring. Though I'm pretty sure I've also had some weird time warp type dreams as well
I had a dream where basically it started with me walking to my school but there’s a sewer pipe that’s actually at the trail I take but what happened is that I heard a voice but it was my own creeped me out.

Cool
Sounds like this make me extremely curious. I won't let it down until I find what/who makes the sound. Then get stuck with it for a while😅
That is so cool. Ugh that is soo cool. I love it. It sounds so otherworldly yet friendly. It feels like it's calling for something. It doesn't mean that it's calling for you, but it is definietely calling for something. And you may as well find out if you are the one it's calling.

Why was this a recommendation, I am not complaining. I just think it may be 11 years to later.
That, my friends is an M15A Gamut Sewage Flow Gate. The deep, terrifying screeching is a large copper brush meant to scrape and screech to alert workers of any change in flow or stop of flow. These gates are huge. Upwards of five feet wide and usually 600+ Kg.
FEE LYNN
I’m just not even going to reply to you.
FEE LYNN it does not make whirring noises!
It has a big copper brush that turns with the gate!
FEE LYNN and technically, it is not a machine.
It’s a large inert piece of metal that *May* have some control arms on it, but other than that, it’s just metal. Sewer systems are usually well maintained and hearing something like this, While uncommon, is possible.
Guys... FEE LYNN is probably a troll, and probably a young one too.

I think that could be a slowly rotating Archimedes screw.
Or another type of pump that works slowly.
That's creepy as hell!
Ikr.... The chills ;-;
Probably a metal chain swinging back and forth or some dude trying to practice an instrument badly
:a dude practicing an instrument badly:
Im sorry but... Who the hell does that in a sewer?
Noah is Neato i walked into that drain and followed the sound then i will found a 450 pound (hence the loud noise) rusty metal moving trapdoor that opens and closes, powered by water filling a a cylinder and the weight of the water pushing it down making the secondary side of the lever pull up the valve causing the water to slowly empty making the valve close again and refill etc. i think the lever needs oiling.

Alarming that its going to be flushed
I like how he slowly walks back like.. No, today I live.
In other countries, sewers have an alarm system that go off when the sewer is about to be flooded.
