Great talk. This technique is simple but not easy. It is safe, inexpensive and effective. As with all actions that we do in life, the more effort that a person puts into some activity, the better the output. The speaker at the beginning talked about how they had called a control group asking them to come back to have them do the expressive writing, he was surprised that no one came back! I was not and said out loud: “I bet not a single person came back!” I spent decades taking care of patients with either/or/both chronic pain, addiction. I loved helping these people but they were addicted to their lifestyle. People with chronic pain and opiate addiction seem to be pretty much the same. Thanks for posting this talk!!

@ Alcohol Free : it isn't addiction to lifestylyle, it's trauma that manifests in the form of crippling anxiety & absolutely debilitating depression. My own experience tells me this. My Dad was a drinker. i struggle with horrendous depression due to losing him in lockdown of his nursing home, last year. i am shattered, in a way i have never felt before. He kept me at a distance for years while he descended into dementia. i did not become his caregiver until the last 18 months of his life. i gave him all the choice i possibly could, not calling the doctor against my better judgment, until he went to hospital with urinary retention, resulting in kidney injury. the hospital bullied me into putting him into care. i had no objection as i felt i failed in my duty to him, even though he could not put into words that he could not pass urine. When he was with me, he was still able to walk, even though it was only back & forth to the bathroom. My only comforting thought is that i did my best not to frighten him, and gave him the right to say no to anything he didn't want. It is cold comfort now. The hospital intimidated me into putting him into care. i now feel like i may develop dementia due to my overwhelming emotional distress. Sometimes life hands you much more than you can handle. My Dad was free to refuse my help for many years. indeed, i could see his decline and could not get anyone to help me with him, as he was a free person. We leave children & old people alone, when they are the two groups that need care the most. My parents were very traumatised people. They transferred their trauma to their children. It was not their fault. Traumatic experiences are abundant in life, the ways to handle the feelings resulting from trauma are often damaging to the survivors

Very interesting lecture. I would like to know more about how to detect when people are lying and the brain processes involved.
