@@kurbo19 yes those are great also. It’s my second favorite album of all time. the songs I picked are probably the ones more people would know. more views for the reactors.
Elton's three main musicians always worked out their own backing vocal harmonies on their own, without input from Elton or producer Gus Dudgeon. Davey Johnstone (guitars), Nigel Olsson (drums) and Dee Murray (one of the greatest bass-guitarists of all time) were amazing backing vocalists.
This song is about someone who "sold their soul" to the highest bidder to live the "high life". But soon became disenchanted with that "lifestyle" and wanted to go back to the simpler life they lead before. The exact "scenario" to this premise, had been debated for years. Everything from "Rent Boys", "Gigolos" to "Gold Diggers". Anyway you look at it, the song is about "regret" and "escaping" back to something simpler.
Very interesting. Where does the selling the soul part in the song. I can see the regret and desire to go back but is there a line that mentions selling or an exchange for fame for the soul? Or what line best implies that?
@@reactioninaction7415 "Sell your soul" does not always mean a pact with the "Devil" at least not the literal "Devil". It is a term that can (and in this case, was) used to say you were willing to give up something important to you, for the chance of getting something "better" . The "better" does not always pan out. And some people "want to go back".
The title of this is Funeral For a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding. It’s a medley of those two songs. The funeral part is the beginning with the church organ and the sad piano and it builds to Love Lies Bleeding. He and his band wrote and recorded it in an afternoon. EM IS a prodigy and a musical genius. I love watching people discover the amazing music I grew up with 😊
After performing at parties and family gatherings, at age 7 he began formal piano lessons. He showed musical aptitude at school, including the ability to compose melodies and gained some notoriety by playing like Jerry Lee Lewis at school functions. At age 11, he won a junior scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music. According to one of his instructors, John promptly played back, like a "gramophone record", a four-page piece by George Frideric Handel after hearing it for the first time.
AND I JUST WENT AND SAW HIM FOR MY 25TH 😊 TIME YOU GUYS AT HIS ( FAREWELL YELLOW BRICK ROAD ) CONCERT AT DODGER STADIUM OPENING NIGHT ( 17 NOV 22 ) I WAS AMAZED AT HOW GOOD HE STILL SOUNDED AND THEN THE WHOLE BAND AND THE VERYYYYY LAST SONG AS PART OF THE ENCORE SET ENDED THE SHOW WITH THIS SONG OF COURSE! 😊
For a double album, there isn’t one bad song on it. My uncle bought Goodbye Yellow Brick road for me when I was a teen. I remember every word because they printed the lyrics on the inside cover. So much love here. ❤️😁
There is no question that Elton is a musical GENIUS. This song places that on full display. Nice reaction guys! You gentlemen should add in an ad or two get yourselves some 💰.
Saw Elton John in 2019 and was surprised but glad to hear him do this song. Blown away by how good he sounded singing this at 70+. The show was about 2 1/2 hrs & about 25 songs or so. I'd have to double-check. Just very impressed at his ability to sing and perform at his age. Tickets were expensive but worth it.
🇨🇦 61YO On this album All the song are good "Harmony" should be your next from Goodbye yellow brick road But try "Mad man across the water" Masterpiece song too Keep the good work guys ✌
This is definitely pop, or soft rock, as were most of Elton John’s songs……with wonderful piano, lush orchestration, beautiful singing……Candle in the Wind is a gorgeous piece, also from this album. Elton was asked to perform it at Princess Diana’s funeral…….it was quite a moment…..very emotional.
I'm not a big country music fan but Hunter Hayes does a country-ish cover of this that's actually really good. Anyone into Elton John should read or listen to his autobiography titled "Me". It's excellent!
As stated, this whole album is gold.... To me, Bernie Taupin (lyrics) was commenting about being a "kept" man in high society. He hooked up with a wealthy socialite and increasingly she was taking over his life. He needed to get away and get back to his plow. (get back to his roots) He then comments that she will get a "replacement" for him. According to Bernie, there are plenty of guys that would give up their independence and lose themselves in a woman and her society needs. Not him, though.
The background vocals are done by guitarist Davey Johnstone, bassist Dee Murray, drummer Nigel Olson. Elton’s music is complex in the realm of popular music. However, Beethoven and Mozart would find it comically simple, likely written by a child
Not a bad track on the whole album. Try Saturday Nights Alright For Fighting, Your Sister Can’t Twist But She Can Rock and Roll, All The Girls Love Alice, Grey Seal, Harmony, Ballad Of Danny Bailey… it’s rock and it does have guitars.
WELL HELLLLLL THAT'S NOT FAIR YOU GUYS! LMAO CAUSE I'M COMPLETELYYYY BIAS :) ELTON AND BERNIE NEVERRR WROTE A BAD SONG SO! :) AND THEY BASICALLYYY HAD 2 BIG HITS OFF OF EACH ALBUM EXCEPT FOR THIS ONE, THEY HAD 4 ( DOUBLE LP ) ORIGINALLY SO THE BIG HITS OFF OF THIS WERE: CANDLE IN THE WIND, BENNIE AND THE JETS, SATURDAY NIGHTS ALRIGHT FOR FIGHTING, AND THE TITLE TRACK GOODBYE YELOOW BRICK ROAD. THANKS FOR CHECKING THE BEST IN ROCK ( ELTON ) OUT, THERE'S ALOTTTTT TO DO YOU GUYS! :)

"I'm not a present for your friends to open" This resonates with me, as sometimes people see you as an object for their entertainment, so much so, you end up like a performing clown.
There were two guitarists in the band. This IS ROCK. Was then, and still is. He also sounded just as good in concert in October 1974, as this album does, and then some. This album was HUGE.
ROCKET MAN WAS A YEAR EARLIER YOU GUYS 😊, FROM HIS 72 ( HONKY CHATEAU ) ALBUM WITH THE OTHERRRR BIG HIT BEING ( HONKY CAT ) DEEP TRACK BEING : MONA LISAS AND MAD HATTERS 😊
I’m not taking this song into me for my psycho. I’m pushing it back on Elton. What it meant to him not just this song but the one below this comment “someone saved my life tonight”. Elton didn’t write his songs.not at this time in his career. First Elton had a number one hit every decade fr fifty years. Why? Because he was a team. Every song you’re reacting toon this album Elton did not write the lyrics.berney tarpon wrote the words. They were life time friends from whe elton went to the studio to try to make it as an artist. They sent him away with no contract. But , they gave him a stack of papers in a file with lyrics. When he started reading them he started composing music and went back to the studio to find berney and that show they found each other. They never argued, but Elton got messed up fast in his career into drugs and alcohol and became an addict for years. But listen to the words to this song and some of the others. I think at this time in his life berney got tired of elton asan addict and wrote these songs to elton. They can apply to so many people and situations but they were definitely preaching to Elton. He had to get help for his addictions.
Candle In The Wind, Bennie And The Jets, Saturday Nights Alright For Fighting, all classics from this album 😎
And beyond those big hits from the album, there’s “All the Girls Love Alice”, “Harmony”, and “I’ve Seen That Movie Too”, among others.

Guys, imagine when this album came out in 1972! Absolute brilliant classic album. Some production for 1972 also.

little caesars and roller skating rink…I’m 46 and so many songs remind me of the roller rink😂
Same here at 53? "I guess that's why they call it the blues" was a popular Elton John song at the time for couples skates.

I like ' All the young girls love Alice' 'Sweet Painted Lady' and 'Saturday's Alright for fighting.
Candle in the wind is a cracking song
Side Four of G.Y.B.Road has some hard rockers and a beautiful ballad. You can safely react to all four songs.

Lesser known from this album is Grey Seal and All the young girls love Alice
