The rapid edits on this one are pure fire! Very engaging. I can only think that if Olu came at me with that face, I could instantly get 4 more pull ups from all the weight I would drop in my shorts.
If it is still in your shorts it would still be weight you would have to pull just like with a dip belt. Better to always pull up without pants so if you drop something it won't hinder you anymore.
CaptFatBeard no pants pull ups. Sure, when you do it, it's "smart training." When I do it, it's, "sir, you have to leave this mcdonald's."
That's why I only go to Burger King.
Josh Johnston good one. I actually laughed 😂
7-12 pull up crew checking in!

NOT TODAY BEAR!!!!
These edits are 🔥🔥🔥 hahah
Thanks brother!
I don't know if you'll see this because you posted the video 4 days ago, but I just got 405 for a single squat. I'm 15. Also I love your channel. You're the one who helped me learn proper technique. And using your powerbuilder program is what helped break my plateau on squat. Thanks a bunch man.
Thanks Brian! your advice was on target for me. Up until 2 months ago I have been, on average, at a range of 9-11 pull ups. Following your 3 tips, I rocked it two weeks ago with 18 pullups on my 50th birthday!
You should make a puking compilation video. The views would be off the charts. Oh, and nice crucifixion reference.
All these breathing and bracing video's are helping me so much with my workouts. Seeing the numbers shoot up lately. Hopefully hitting 405lb squats for reps by end of summer at 165lbs myself. Currently chilling at 375lbs for 6. Perfecting the form at this weight then going for broke to hit 405 in a few months! Thank you so much for these bracing tips and synergistic tips.
Holy shit, I tried this today, and instantly got 3 more reps on every set I did. Thanks!!
When you are a calisthenics athlete (who does the big lifts also) and a legit strongman preaches the good stuff about pull ups.. You know life's good!
Vince K.O Cavaliere lol I like ur name
Adding pull ups before sets of OHP as per Brian has worked wonders for me
I do pullups to avoid bear attacks. Not today, bear!
I just doubled my pullups by imagining an Olou-zombie chasing me.
Watched your first pull-up tutorial and learned about the importance of the "belly breath" and my pull-ups improved. Watched this video before performing weighted 5x5 weighted pull-ups (increasing the weight five pounds from last week) and getting the belly breath BEFORE I grabbed the bar allowed me to keep the breath held for every rep and complete all my reps. I consistently become a better lifter after watching your videos. Keep them coming...and watch out for rabid Olus.
Brian “the legend” Alsruhe. Dropping bombs, knowledge bombs.
Managed 25 with these inputs, that's a +3. Big thanks, Brian! Awesome content as always.
This has quickly become my favorite RUclips fitness channel, thanks for all the great content. You've inspired me to join my local strong man gym in Lubbock TX. Cheers Brian
Classic and always consistent with your teaching. As solid as your knowledge, this video is 10/10
This is a pleasant guy to listen to, even if you talk fast, awesome tips man!
"That's how crucifixion works" I giggled, then realised how dark that was.
1 Squeeze bar has hard as you can.
2 Breathing / Bracing
2a Get stool / bench up to bar. Easier to get set
2b Get as many reps as possible on first breathe
2c Breathe a top release coming down.
3 Open Hips - Cross feet / lean back.
Brilliant information as usual Brian!! Watching from Ireland
Hey Brian, loving the content recently. Was rewatching a video you filmed in front of your stacked bookshelf and was wondering, what are your top 3 books? Much love man, keep it up.
So happy I found this channel!! He actually teaches shit
Great tips Brian, gonna think about that last one next time!
Glad to see how big your chanel has become. You deserv it!
This came on a day when I found out my knee is injured and I won't be able to squat or deadlift for a few weeks at least, meaning I have to concentrate entirely on upper body movements and core - while it's fortunate timing, and these tips are helpful, nothing was more useful for getting more pull-ups than imagining Olu running at me.
Rob Baldwin
There is no reason to be alive if you can't do deadlift.
-Jon Pall Sigmarsson
With that in mind, good luck tonight!
Been meaning to work on my dumbbell curl 1 rep max in the squat rack...
Didn’t think about the bracing and opening up the hips. Going to try this today. Thanks Brian!!!!
yeah its really weird but the breath and brace thing really helps in pullups...probably as your body get more tight, you move it easier
LiL Hazestings. Well, at the least its easier to move in a directi9n when you arnt swaying around generating centripetal force in the wrong direction.
LiL Hazestings i actually tried it today and yeah it definitely felt a lot easier. I was able to get 4 more reps than usual
Thanks for this Brian. I listened to your advice on deadlifts and it helped tremendously...particularly the tip to pretend you've just lowered the weight to get a good hip height. I can't wait to go do some pull-ups now - breathing has always been the toughest part beyond rep 7 or 8 so I want to see what it's like to breathe at the top. Thanks!
Hey Brian I'm new to the channel and I tried your 3 tips for increasing your squat and it did wonders keep working chief
Great video.Thanks!...I'll try some of these pointers. I'm 64 185lbs and doing 15 reps on first set. When I started I could barely do one. On back day I do 10 sets of as many reps as I can do. Sometimes I'll add weight up to 45lbs. On other body part days I may do 2-3 sets of pullups/chinups but only do say 6-8 reps. Has worked good for me. Hope I can keep it up.
Not today bear!!! I love Olu's face in the intro
As always keep up the good work, always good for a mental recap
Myself can do about 8-10 pullups, will def try this. Tnx!
Strong work Brian! Video was great!
thanks very much for the tips. pull ups are my all time nemesis
Tfw Walter from Get Out gets super jacked.
Good Content as always Brian!!
Lets get to 200 000 by the end of the year. I need this i suck at pull ups.
Thanks, this comes just in time :)
I’m trying to get in a lot of pull up volume this week so the more of these tips I use the easier 5x10 will be.
Brian can you do a one arm pull up? I've only heard of a few people over 200 pounds who can do one and have never actually seen it done by a guy your size, so if you can it would make a cool video clip.
So Brian you talk about the body working synergistically which makes sense but I’m confused about tip #3 and why you would open up your hips if it prevents you from squeezing your quads and some other muscle groups which would help you exert more force into the pullup
to change the angle so you can use more muscles groups to perm the rep man.
Thanks for this, Brian. 🙂
Please, name the overhead pressing movement at 7:40 and include it in your programs!!! Maybe Weighted Back Hold OHP. It's going to be a major success. Shoot out to Nic and Olu!
I've been waiting for this video
I love your fitness channel
My God this video is hilarious. Thanks for the good info.
Wahahaha hahahaha !!!!! Oluv that big lovable bastard. Great vid guys!
Great video
If you don't really squeeze the bar and you end up almost hanging on by your fingertips (caused by a lack of forearm strength), you run the risk of developing golfers elbow. Which I have unfortunately learnt the hard way.
Good video bro
OLU RUNNING AT ME ? I WOULD KILL SOME PULL-UPS
I could only do one dip at my bodyweight of 225 so I started adding weight and now I'm at 55 pounds added for one rep after two weeks and in only two weeks I went from one dip to 13 dips so this method works fast.
Hey Brian, can you please do a video on how you program (5/3/1 or other) the weighted pull-up?
Just when i needed🔥🔥
0:16 Lol!
Video on diet fundamentals? Your options on cutting and bulking?
I have already made a few of those man.
Hey Brian, any chance you can do a tutorial on the Husafell Stone carry?
Brian! Awesome video! If you don't mind my asking, how many unbroken pullups can you do in a set, without letting go of the bar? I'm decent at pullups, but I want to use your numbers as a benchmark.
Before Shoulder surgery I was around 35-40. Now I am probably around the 20-25 mark.
Thanks!
YOU JUST SAID OLU CAN'T CLIMB?? Climbing competition between you two. I wanna see some olu climbing.
Olu, definitely scarier than zombies.
Olu...not today bear!
Great content as always, I love you enthusiasm and youd advices! Please consider spining less though, it makes me feel dizzy.
Nearly closed the window when that intro came up.
Hey Brian,
Beginning part of the video about hands got me (probably) over thinking something; but does it really matter which grip one uses in the pronated pull up, false or full? Is there any serious pros/cons to either one?
Thomas Aldrich your grip will engage different muscles differently, but not very much differently. You get the least biceps involvement with a pronated grip, most with a supine grip, which is why most people find chin ups easier. At my gym, different racks have different handles, so some days, I'm doing traditional pull ups, some days neutral grip, and some days it is traditional or supine grip over the square frame (because there are no pull up handles on that one). One rack (I hate it) is clearly for some tall-ass people because the handles are so damn far apart, I can only get five or six reps. It just depends on which rack is open that day. I don't fuss much about it. I mentally adjust my rep/+weight goal based on my experience with each. Seems to work out. The more I learn about this stuff, the less it seems that tiny details like which grip to use matter in the long run, unless you have a condition or injury that limits what you can do safely. For myself, I just mark what variation i did at what weight for what reps and remind myself that, "a good fighter has no weapon preference. They know the performance of each, and their relative strengths and weaknesses." -Miyamoto Musashi, paraphrased.
I don't think it matters too too much if you do false or thumb over. I personally just automatically do false on wide grip pull ups. But there's no difference in strength
I know this isn’t related to this topic but I was wondering what was the length of the straps you used to do no hand deadlifts
Olu will definitely eat you. LOL love it!
im actually tall enough that i can touch the ground with my toes on every pull up bar there is so grip isnt the issue
hey bonus question for you brian...is one arm chin-up antagonist movement for circus dumbbell? :D
Hope all well b
I squoze a jar to hard, now I have a nice scar to do pull ups with
for breathe and bracing
do you mean you should inhale while you're in the pulled position(at the top)? or hanged position? i'm kinda confused.
it's pulling movement so, i'm not sure the hanged position or pulled position considered to have more load
is it like in OHP that you breathe only at the top?
“That’s why crucifixion works”
is he... is he getting that pump while talking?
Mental Gear brian is like the hulk except with enthusiasm. When he's really into something like talking about pullups, he starts transforming. That's why his gym has such a high roof. When he's having a really good day, he has to sleep in there.
Brian I’m in Washington close by you guys and it’s “gross” I can confirm
What if you squeeze so hard you break the bar?
*just kidding I have the grip strength of a tetraplegic nancy with arthritis and stumps for hands*
Brb going to get to 1 then I'll work on 2
🔥🔥🔥✨
Hi Brian, doesn't really apply to this video but since it's new hoping you're still checking notifications. Started trying to add Nordic curls to my program like you talked about in a recent post but everytime I try one my hamstrings cramp up intensely within the first 15 degrees of motion, really bad I have to abort the rep to avoid a major issue. Is this a flexibility or strength issue? I can squat and pull over 300, but I can't come close to touching my toes with straight legs. I get the same cramp(not as bad though) when I do pullups with bent knees, if the bar isn't high enough to keep my legs straight I can't do more than like 5 pull ups without my hams cramping. Any tips?
It is a strength issue in relation to your body brother. Gotta bring up those hamstrings or drop some weight. Since can't see you, I am not sure which one you should do. !
Brian Alsruhe 205 at 6'3", prob 15-18% BF. I can do 15 pullups if I'm not cramping. Any ideas for strengthening the hams? Rdls?
I suggest Stiff legged deadlifts, they definitely worked for me
What if you're in new york hanging off a ledge so the full grip doesn't help at all???? GOT YA!
Are you a guard player or do u rather passage. I'm curious about your BJJ :)
If they are bigger than me, which is usual in my weight class, then guard. If the same, then I have a very heavy top game.
Brian i can't gain weight i was wondering if could give me some tips on how to ?
Gajeel Redfox not Brian, of course, but you need to eat more and more calorie dense foods, there is no magic or violation of energy laws.
ok thanks
Brian i think you forgot links to the other pullup videos
They are there
They're under the info annotation in the top right corner of the video.
Oh my apologies i see now, thank you Brian. Your content is very helpful and I enjoy your videos very much!
If a thumbless grip is a false grip, would a thumbed grip be a true grip?
I'm assuming the 5 dislikes are people that rather watch someone do a pull-up instead of doing one 😂 great tips though.
Beggining Was scary.
Hey Brian, what's with the blue tounge 😂
I was eating a Jolly Rancher to stop the puking so I could record the video
N E V E R S I T C O M
the new tomb raider movie is full of cliff and wall climbing scenes. talk about petite upper body
So I'm around 260lbs and like everyone want to do pull ups. Should I just wait till I'm lighter or with the bands will help me??
im not a very strong guy and i managed to do a good 4 or 5 pull ups when i was 250lbs. a lot of it is technique and efficiency. but using bands or just doing a lot of lat pulldowns (i hope thats what they called in english) should help a lot. also: dont worry if you cant do as many as lighter guys. its much harder for you. you can probably deadlift a lot more than them
TheLasagneLP thank you I will definitely keep that in mind
Athleanx suggest using the inverted row. He has a video how to get 20 pull ups describing how to get your numbers started, maybe progressing on that. There is a bit of technique involved in pull ups.
260 is not heavy man, when I was 275 I could do 30 unbroken. Become stronger. unless it is bad weight, at which time, lose the weight brother.
Brian Alsruhe Good god that's my fucking goal right there
this will be good when i can di 1 lol
The one dislike can't do a single pull-up.
No that's not a false grip. For a false grip you have to bend your wrist and set the bar at the heel of your palm. Google it.
Did you do a backflip yet ?
Wouldn't you have to hang from a cliff with a false grip? Cliffs don't have handles!
Pennywhether. Listen to that part again...
Fourth!
Hahahahaha Oluu
Blue tongue Brian!! What are you drinking??
Also love the pace of your videos, super fun!
I was eating a Jolly rancher to keep the puck down so I could finish recording the video.
Bro wtf .....this tight grip thing even works in boxing .....wtf y i didnt see this video before ....grip thing is every where man ..
